Top Valorant Rank Gets A New Name

3 years 10 months ago

The next Valorant update will add in the highly-anticipated Competitive mode and ranked system that early access players got the opportunity to test out during the closed beta. Ranked play is coming so soon that Riot has given players a peek into what's new with the updated Competitive mode, including the new name of its top rank: Radiant.

During the beta, the top rank was called Valorant, which Riot cites as a source of "potential confusion." A new blog post outlines Riot's thought process behind the rank rename: "Although we still really like having our top rank be something unique to our game and aligned with our IP, we’ve decided to remove VALORANT as the name of our top rank to help reduce potential confusion of the game vs the rank," Riot states. "The new name for our top rank will represent Agents infused with powers, known as Radiant."

In addition to the name change, Riot has also provided a graphic with the newly designed rank iconography.

The Messenger Prequel, Sea Of Stars, Gets New Trailer

3 years 10 months ago

Developer Sabotage Studio, the team behind the critically acclaimed action-platformer The Messenger, has shared a new trailer for its upcoming game. The trailer for Sea of Stars, which is a prequel to The Messenger and is embedded below, shows what we can expect of its gameplay when it drops sometime in 2022.

The trailer has a very Chrono Trigger vibe to it, as we get to see exploration from both the traditional map and the overworld. We also get introduced to three of Sea of Stars' six playable characters, as well as a look at some puzzle-solving and turn-based combat.

Sea of Stars was revealed earlier this year through a Kickstarter campaign. The game is billed as a throwback to the 16-bit era of JRPGs, which brings to mind titles such as Chrono Trigger and Super Mario RPG. While it's unclear how two of the three confirmed playable characters--Valeria and Zale--fit into The Messenger's universe, they did make an appearance in the game during the Sunken Shrine dungeon. Sabotage said this was a direct reference to what was next for the studio.

The fourth Crash game will release October 2, 2020, and it's available to pre-order now in both physical and digital formats.

How The Demon's Souls Remake on PS5 Compares To The PS3 Original

3 years 10 months ago

A new video by Digital Foundry has analyzed exactly what kind of graphical upgrades we can expect from Bluepoint Games' remake of Demon's Souls for PS5, by painstakingly comparing the clips with their PS3 equivalents.

While it doesn't take a genius to see the graphical improvements in the remake that was first revealed by Sony in its PS5 reveal showcase, the video also shows where the increased console power has been used to change and update detailing.

Previously sparse corridors have been turned into rotting halls overgrown with ivy and weeds, where much of the original game's sparse architecture has been upgraded into a grander, more imposing gothic style.

EA Boss On The Importance Of Diversity And Inclusion

3 years 10 months ago

EA's chief studios officer Laura Miele has shared new details on the company's ambition to be a more inclusive and diverse company, and why that will help the outfit to make the best games.

Speaking to GI.biz, Miele shared that EA has created a new set of internal guidelines called the "Inclusion Framework" that studios use to help make more inclusive characters and stories. Miele pointed to Kim Hunter, the fictional female hero of the FIFA story mode in recent years, as an example of a development team creating a game with the aim of helping to appeal to a wider audience than before.

"We want to make games for everyone, and our games and characters must be as diverse as the communities we serve," Miele said. "One way we enable that is our Inclusion Framework, a set of filters designed to challenge our thinking and help our studios develop more inclusive characters and stories across our games. A great example of this is FIFA. The team has adopted the framework and completes a diversity assessment every year. It enabled the FIFA team to ensure Kim Hunter was a unique and truly authentic character and a gaming first--the first female playable hero in a sports story."

Call Of Duty: Warzone--Watch A Squad Drum Up A Victory With Only Kali Stick Kills

3 years 10 months ago

Call of Duty: Warzone added a new melee weapon in Season 4--the Kali Stick, a pair of sticks that can be used as melee weapons to quickly beat down an opponent. Generally, a new melee weapon is not as exciting in a game like this as a new powerful gun. As it turns out, though, the Kali Stick is incredibly deadly in the right hands.

YouTuber Vikkstar123 has released a video of him and the other members of his three-person squad racking up a win in the Call of Duty battle royale game only using Kali Sticks to hurt their enemies.

While secondary grenades like flashbangs are used, and the squad also use vehicles to move around the map and riot shields to protect themselves, their kills are all scored with these sticks.

New Gotham-Related Web Domain Registrations Hint At Next Batman Games

3 years 10 months ago

A number of new domain registrations have sparked speculation after they were shared on the Resetera forums, as picked up by Video Games Chronicle. They include suicidesquadgame.com, gothamknightsgame.com, and suicidesquadkillthejusticeleague.com, all of which have been registered in June by MarkMonitor Inc. While the link to Warner Bros hasn't yet been confirmed, MarkMonitor Inc. is the same domain broker used to register wbgames.com.

WB Games Montreal, the studio behind Batman: Arkham Origins, has been teasing a new Batman game for months now with the slogan "Capture The Knight". This has led fans to assume that the Gotham Knights domain registration is tied to--and has revealed the name of--WB Games Montreal's new game.

Lord Of The Rings Online Players Gather To Celebrate Ian Holm's Life

3 years 10 months ago

If there's one place to hold a memorial for the esteemed Sir Ian Holm, it's in Middle-earth itself--albeit the online version. Lord Of The Rings Online players across multiple servers celebrated the life of an actor most known within the fandom as playing Bilbo Baggins in the LOTR films, but who also lent his voice to Frodo in the 1981 BBC radio play of the same story.

After the news that Holm had passed away on June 19 at the age of 88, around 300 players on the Evernight server marched to Rivendell to visit the Bilbo Baggins NPC in the Last Homely House in Rivendell, while the song Far Over The Misty Mountains Cold played as an homage to his first ever adventure.

The roleplay server Laurelin had players gather at Bilbo's home, Bag End, where a dwarven minstrel played music for the crowd of mourners.

Nintendo Might Be Winding Down Its Mobile Game Development, Report Suggests

3 years 10 months ago

Nintendo might be looking to step away from developing new mobile games, according to a new report by Bloomberg. A report published on the site details how Nintendo seems likely to focus on Switch in the future, with fewer mobile games being developed.

Nintendo has made over $1 billion from mobile games since 2016's Super Mario Run, but over 60% of that figure came from a single title--Fire Emblem Heroes. In 2017, following the release of Animal Crossing: Pocket Camp, it was reported that Nintendo wanted to ramp up mobile development--this might no longer be the case.

According to Bloomberg, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa said in May that the company is "not necessarily looking to continue releasing many new applications for the mobile market," and that their move into mobile development was largely motivated by the Wii U's failure to sell well. While the Switch is performing well, especially with the sales figures of Animal Crossing: New Horizons, their mobile titles are not showing similar growth. He also said that a major increase in revenue from mobile was not expected this financial year.

Battlefield 6 Has "Crazy Ambitious Ideas," EA Says

Pokemon Sword & Shield: Players Who Bought The Wrong DLC Should Contact Nintendo Support

3 years 10 months ago

Pokemon Sword & Shield recently released the first of its two DLC packs, the Isle of Armor, introducing new and returning monsters alongside a new Wild Area for players to explore. But some players have run into a snag when purchasing the Season Pass that will let them access this new area--Sword and Shield have separate store pages, and it's possible to buy the DLC for the version of the game that you don't have.

This is an issue, as Nintendo of America's support page specifies that the company is "unable to provide refunds or exchanges for mistaken purchases." However, this seems to have been a common enough issue with Pokemon that Nintendo might be taking a different approach.

In a tweet, Nintendo of America encouraged players who have purchased the wrong DLC pass to reach out. "If you mistakenly purchased the incorrect pass, please contact customer support," the tweet reads.

Ninjala Launch Trailer Is A West Side Story Homage, For Some Reason

3 years 10 months ago

Ninjala is coming to Switch as a free-to-play title on June 24, and the game's launch trailer shows off some of the frantic action you can expect in its eight-player battles. It also, for some reason, opens with a strange little homage to West Side Story.

The musical, which was adapted into a film in 1961 and is getting remade by Steven Spielberg, is about a clash between two teenage street gangs, and a love affair between members of opposing sides. While Ninjala also has warring gangs, it's not clear whether the game's Story mode will deal with any of the complex themes of the musical--although it seems unlikely.

The trailer also shows plenty of gameplay footage, so you can check out some examples of the unique powers each character will possess, and witness some intense brawls. Despite an aesthetic that looks like it's inspired by Splatoon, the gameplay is clearly very different.

Fortnite Removes Police Cars

3 years 10 months ago

Police cars have been removed from Epic's hugely popular battle royale game Fortnite, players have noticed following the release of the Chapter 2, Season 3 update.

A source connected to the game told The Wall Street Journal that the removal of the cop cars was in response to the murder of George Floyd by police officers in Minnesota. However, the source said Epic Games was not trying to make a "political statement" but was instead attempting to be "sensitive about the issues" going on the world today.

Earlier this year, Epic Games CEO Tim Sweeney spoke about politics in gaming. "If a game tackles politics (or: weighty social issues), it should come from the heart of designers through the game, and not from marketing departments seeking to profit from division," he said.

Desert Golfing, One Of The Best Games On Mobile, Asks If There's Golf On Mars With A Sequel

3 years 10 months ago

Is there golf on Mars? There is now. Desert Golfing, one of the best mobile games of the last decade, has just received a sequel, and it's called Golf On Mars. The game is available now, and costs $3 on iOS and Android. It's also coming to Steam on June 29, if you'd rather play with a mouse.

Developer Captain Games returns for the sequel, which once again serves up literally millions of holes, all pseudo-randomly generated--meaning that while every player will encounter the same holes, they've all been designed by the same algorithm.

You play with simple swipe aim controls, and the goal is, essentially, to go as far as you can with as few strokes as possible. Most players will aim to get their average down, but there's no end goal--you can theoretically keep playing forever. The game is set in the year 2866 when Mars has been 35% terraformed, but don't expect much of a narrative.

Madden NFL 21 Will Have Player Stats Updated In Real-Time On PS5 And Xbox Series X

3 years 10 months ago

EA's Chief Studios boss Laura Miele has shared some new insight on the company's first next-generation games, one of which is EA Sports' Madden NFL 21. Miele said the game will not only look better and load faster thanks to the power of the PS5 and Xbox Series X, but it will also contain some under-the-hood improvements to make the game more authentic to the NFL experience.

She told GI.biz that Madden NFL 21 will make use of "next-gen stats" that will seemingly include updated player stats in real time. Here's how she described the feature: "In Madden we will be using the NFL's next gen stats so every athlete in the game will play how they do in real life, with the data being updated in real-time."

No Caption Provided

Player ratings are a huge part of the Madden series--it's always a big deal each year when the ratings are revealed and players react to them. Changes are made regularly in previous games, based on real-world performance, but it sounds like Madden NFL 21 will take things even further by updating them in "real time."

The Last Of Us 2 Breaks Sales Records In The UK

The game beat out another Naughty Dog exclusive--2016's Uncharted 4: A Thief's End--by 1 percent to claim the record, according to sales charts obtained by GI.biz.

The charts cover physical game sales exclusively, so this only captures one element of The Last of Us Part II's launch results. Digital game sales have been growing over the years for Sony and other companies. For Sony's latest period, it sold 66 percent of its games digitally.

Call Of Duty: Warzone And Modern Warfare Could Nerf Grau Very Soon

3 years 10 months ago

Introduced earlier this year to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare and Call of Duty: Warzone, the Grau 5.56 assault rifle is one of the most powerful weapons in the game right now, performing well in most situations and capable of holding its own in close-range and long-range scenarios. However, it has been accused of being overpowered, and Infinity Ward is looking to give it a nerf in a future update.

Answering a fan's question on Twitter, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare co-design director of multiplayer Joe Cecot said the development team has several weapon adjustments in the works for a mid-season update. There isn't a definitive date for when the Grau will receive a nerf, but there will be full patch notes available when it occurs.

PS5 Sequel Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart's Big Feature Is Only Possible On Next-Gen

3 years 10 months ago

The PS5-exclusive Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart was announced during Sony's official console reveal on June 11, and the game is taking advantage of the console's new hardware features in order to push the series even further. In a developer diary video, creative director Marcus Smith explained just what that will mean for gameplay, including jumping between completely different worlds on the fly.

In the video below, you can see Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart gameplay as Marcus Smith explains why it is only possible on PS5. After a mysterious enemy arrives and accidentally damages the fabric of space-time itself, portals to alternate dimensions begin to appear. Because of the PS5's ultra-fast solid-state drive, or SSD, our heroes can jump between these worlds almost instantly. You can see them marked in the world with a wavy, cracked portal, and there is no loading screen before you arrive in the new world.

"Long gone are loading screens," Smith added. "Now, it's all about bringing exciting new adventures."

Xbox Series X: The Ascent Developer On The Power Of Next-Gen

3 years 10 months ago

One of the most exciting games coming to Xbox Series X this holiday season is The Ascent, a science-fiction action-role-playing game that plays like a cross between the Diablo series and classic twin-stick shooters. Because of Microsoft's Smart Delivery system, the game is automatically enhanced when played on Xbox Series X instead of Xbox One, and developer Neon Giant explained just how that will work.

Speaking to Xbox Wire, creative director Arcade Berg (he has a very good name) explained that ray tracing and upgraded reflective surfaces are among the key visual upgrades for The Ascent on next-generation hardware. Input will also feel more responsive and you can expect a more interactive world, which is hugely important in an immersive role-playing game.

As is the case with PS5, as well, the SSD on Xbox Series X will make loading times far shorter, keeping you in the game rather than on a loading screen. This won't compromise visual quality or performance, either, as The Ascent will run at 4K resolution with 60 frames-per-second gameplay and HDR support on Xbox Series X. However, he did say that the console's true capability will only be unlocked once games are developed exclusively for it instead of alongside Xbox One.

Apex Legends Director On The Need For Skill-Based Matchmaking (SBMM)

3 years 10 months ago

I recently had the chance to talk about everything new coming to Apex Legends with creative director Chad Grenier in light of EA Play 2020. Many huge announcements like a Switch version, cross-platform play, and the upcoming in-game event came out of the event, and we discussed them in further detail in the interview below. But I also asked about developer Respawn Entertainment's views on the state of skill-based matchmaking (SBMM) in the game.

To sum things up, Grenier and the team feel great about where the game's at, including its implementation of SBMM. He acknowledged that it's a hot topic for fans and within Respawn, and mentioned that they're aware of the feedback. He added, "There are multiple sides to the story. We're trying to evaluate all of the data and trying to do what's best for the game as a whole. It's really tough because you've got some beginner players or mediocre players, middle of the road, and you want them to have a good experience."

Apex Legends Season 6 "May Be A Little Bit Different" From Season 5 When It Comes To Storytelling

3 years 10 months ago

In Season 5: Fortune's Favor, Respawn added a new story-based PvE mode called Quest. In a GameSpot Play For All interview, Apex Legends game director Chad Grenier spoke to us about Respawn's decision to add a story mode to a multiplayer-focused game and teased that how Apex Legends' story is told may look "a little bit different" in Season 6.

"Quest was really just an experiment to see how we could tell more story in [Apex Legends]," Grenier said. "We have a team of people who love to tell stories. Before Apex, we made a campaign, Titanfall 2, and told a ton of story there. And then moving on to making a multiplayer-only game, we're left wondering, 'How can we tell a story in a battle royale game? Is that even possible?' And we found ways to do that through transmedia storytelling and our character teases and the dialogue--so Quests is just an evolution of trying to tell a story in a multiplayer game."

Xbox Series X Hardware Will Improve xCloud In 2021

3 years 10 months ago

Microsoft is currently still testing Xbox xCloud--it's cloud-based streaming solution that will let you stream games to your smartphone, tablet, PC, and even consoles. Right now, it's data centers are filled with Xbox One S hardware to run instances of each game, but they'll be upgraded to Xbox Series X hardware in 2021.

The Verge reports that Microsoft is planning to launch xCloud as part of Xbox Game Pass later this year, after months of testing across both Android and iOS. The report states that preliminary tests for Xbox Series X hardware transitions are already taking place, but that a wide roll out won't come until after the console launches later this year.

Beyond the obvious boost to graphical powers, the jump to Xbox Series X allows more game instances to run on a single console, with at least four Xbox One S instances supported per Xbox Series X blade. The better CPU in the Series X will also improve video encoding that's crucial to fast streaming, with Microsoft claiming that it will be around six times faster once implemented.

The Last Of Us 2 Accessibility / Difficulty Options: A Detailed Overview

3 years 10 months ago

The Last Of Us Part 2 is the latest big AAA blockbuster video game from the team at Naughty Dog for the PlayStation 4. So naturally, a lot of different people are probably quite interested in playing it and seeing what the big deal is. Common sense suggests that not all of those people are going to be on the same level when it comes to their experience with stealth and actions games, or video games in general. Not all of those people are going to have the same level of facilities that might help them hear or see an enemy, and some people might need some assistance in manipulating a controller.

Thankfully, The Last Of Us Part 2 features a ton of different accessibility options that will let you adjust things like the granular difficulty of the game, how enemies work, how different game mechanics function, and how the game looks, feels, and control. It's all in the service of hopefully making the game comfortable to play no matter what your situation is, at least, as comfortable as a tense, violent, and sometimes horrific thriller can be. Compared to other AAA games, the accessibility options here are much more robust and should let many more people enjoy the story and combat.

In this article, we've highlighted the more notable accessibility options in The Last Of Us Part 2, with some explanations on what some of them do. If you're interested in playing the Last of Us Part 2 but want to know whether you can change the game to suit your particular needs, hopefully this article will be of some help.

Best Webcams For Work And Streaming That Are Available Right Now

3 years 10 months ago

With the current pandemic still forcing many people to stay home these days, many have found that they need a webcam (better than the one that's built into your laptop) to attend meetings or have online hangouts with friends. With so many people looking to buy a webcam, it can be hard to find a good webcam from many of the best brands, including Logitech, Microsoft, and Razer, that hasn't sold out. With that struggle in mind, we've rounded up some of the best webcams available to buy right now. These may not be the best webcams on the market, but they're still well-reviewed, affordable, and will work just fine for the majority of people.

Many of these webcams are also great for casual Twitch streaming setups. While more professional streamers use DSLR cameras, webcams are a popular way to implant your face into your stream without breaking the bank. A big plus to streaming with a webcam is that you don't need one with an ultra-high resolution, as the picture-in-picture facecam is relatively small compared to the rest of your stream's output. If you're new to streaming, most of these webcams will suit your needs perfectly. Plus, see our guide to the best streaming accessories for more options, including the best capture cards and best budget gaming chairs.

At the moment, some of these webcams are discounted, but prices do fluctuate quite quickly and seemingly randomly, especially on Amazon. Before you finalize your purchase, double-check that price. As for the webcams we've chosen, the ones you can view below have either been tested by us personally or chosen due to their overwhelmingly positive reviews.

PS5 And Xbox Series X Injustice, Mortal Kombat Games Seemingly Being Planned

3 years 10 months ago

The next generation of consoles, the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, is nearly upon us. And while we've seen some games for both systems, the fighting game genre has been absent from many of these early announcements. Fighting game developer NetherRealm Studios seems to be leading the push for next-gen brawlers, with a brand-new job listing hiring for someone to bring Injustice and Mortal Kombat to PS5 and XSX.

The listing (spotted by EventHubs) simply states NetherRealm Studios is looking for a principal software engineer to work on graphics that will "drive the next generation console graphics vision for the Mortal Kombat and Injustice franchises." This person will work on "develop[ing] state-of-the-art graphics technology for the PS5 and Xbox Series X," with particular attention to "optimization, design, and implementation of pivotal new graphics technology."

There's no definitive mention in the job listing that NetherRealm is working on new entries for either Injustice or Mortal Kombat. Furthermore, there's no clarification that the studio has plans to port either Injustice 2 or Mortal Kombat 11 to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.

A few, however, are about more story-focused moments, and they're easy to miss if you don't know they're happening. That can prevent you from earning TLOU2's Platinum Trophy.

Lucky for you, we've tracked down every Trophy in The Last of Us Part 2 and we know exactly how to earn them. The guide below will point out where you can unlock each one. Be warned that this is spoiler territory, however, so go at your own risk. Any information you see beyond this point is liable to reveal story elements to you that are best discovered on your own.

Check out our spoiler-free walkthrough, as well as a suite of other guides, in our huge The Last of Us Part II guide roundup--which also includes some essential tips you should know. If you're curious about how the game stacks up, check out our The Last of Us Part II review.

Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time Leaks On Ratings Board

3 years 10 months ago

Following a tease dating back to November 2019, Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time has leaked thanks to listings filed by the Taiwan Digital Game Rating Committee. The listings state that the game is being developed for PS4 and Xbox One (with Xbox Series X compatibility, according to the box art). No official announcement has been made regarding the game, nor do we know when one might be coming, although ratings board listings are often solid predictors of impending reveals. Here's what we know about Crash 4 based on the leak.

The listing includes a blurb (translated by Gematsu) for the first numbered sequel since Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped on the original PlayStation, which was the last in the series to be developed by The Last of Us Part II developer Naughty Dog. It mentions new masks akin to that of Aku-Aku--a series stalwart and familiar companion to Crash Bandicoot.

"Crash is relaxing and exploring his island in his time, 1998, when he finds a mysterious mask hidden away in a cave, Lani-Loli," the translation reads. "The mask is one of the Quantum Masks and apparently knows Aku-Aku, Crash's mask friend! With the Quantum Masks returning and a Quantum Rift appearing near our heroes, they decide to bravely head through to different times and dimensions to stop whoever is responsible."
