Good Smile Company shared an update on its Persona 5 Royal Kasumi "Violet" Yoshizawa Nendoroid at WonHobbyG 2023 Spring. We first learned the figure was on the way back in February 2023. At that point, only concept art of the character appeared. Now she's shown up as an unpainted prototype.

As mentioned in the original announcement, Kasumi is wearing her Phantom Thief attire for this Persona 5 Royal Nendoroid. In the preliminary pose, she's also wielding a rapier. Her mask is also on for this photo.

Citizen Sleeper's DLC has taught me total failure is sometimes inevitable, and that's okay

11 months 3 weeks ago

When my Sleeper escaped their ramshackle life on the fringes of Erlin's Eye at the end of last year, they left behind a lot of unfinished business. I had to stop short my efforts to help Bliss make a go of her repair bay business, and Tala was left to finish making her brand-new distillery on her own. Yatagan agent Rabiyah probably has my name on an employment blacklist, too, after I upped sticks without telling them, and the spores of mushroom algae I'd been cultivating for Riko over in Greenway were no doubt left to rot and moulder somewhere. Instead, I jacked that all in to smuggle myself, my engineering pal Lem and his tiny daughter Mina onto a ship headed for some far-flung star out in the void. The Sidereal ship wasn't going to wait. It was now or never.

Why Foamstars Will Struggle to Copy the Success of Splatoon

11 months 3 weeks ago

Foamstars Girl

Square Enix announced a new game called Foamstars at the May 2023 PlayStation Showcase. It’s a multiplayer shooter where players shoot multi-colored foam at each other with wacky weapons. There’s just one problem. This game already exists, right?

The internet responded to Foamstars by accusing it of being a copy of Splatoon. It's easy to see why. After all, Nintendo’s franchise is a multiplayer shooter where players shoot multi-colored ink at each other with wacky weapons. It's almost the same concept.

It goes beyond that though. So many of the weapons in the Foamstars trailer feel like imitations of Splatoon’s weapons, even down to the sound effects. A montage of special attacks reveals clones of the Baller, Inkzooka, Killer Wail, Inkstrike and Splashdown. The design of the pink-haired girl who appears prominently in the trailer bears similarities to the Inkling girl from the cover of Splatoon 2. I did initially think the surfboards were unique at least, until I realized that they could simply be considered a variant of Splatoon's squid and octopus forms.

Obviously, Nintendo doesn’t have an exclusive right to make painting-turf gameplay. Plenty of other developers are welcome to make something new out of Nintendo’s base concept. However, the more the trailer showed off ideas ripped straight out of Splatoon, the more baffling it became.

Pokemon TCG: The Best Paldea Evolved Cards

11 months 3 weeks ago

pokemon tcg best paldea evolved cards

The new Pokemon Trading Card Game set, Paldea Evolved, appeals to a lot of audiences. Long-time players! Collectors who never bothered to learn the rules! Iono fans! Whichever camp you’re in, here are some standouts from the new expansion.

The coolest Paldea Evolved cards

Illustrator Rares continue to be very cool! Perhaps to the detriment of normal cards, the existence of which seem less and less justified over time. Maybe if they made more interesting illustration choices and fewer boring ones? Regardless, we’re fans of the Arctibax line, with its bright colors and analog aesthetic. Commission more like these, will ya, Pokemon Company?

The same goes for the full-art Magikarp. Looking very cool goes a long way for a near-useless card like Magikarp, and it’ll likely be the preferred option for people using it as a stepping stone to Gyarados. And cards like Gothorita? We’ve learned from past TCG sets that printing a lot of gems and sparks in foil looks very nice.

And honestly, cards overall are looking a bit cooler these days with the slick silver borders, introduced to the West in the previous set. Art decisions have long been made with them in mind since the Japanese borders were silver, so the consistency is settling in nicely over here.

Diablo 4’s Gothic Art Style Finally Reclaims the Series’ Identity

11 months 3 weeks ago

When Diablo 3 was first revealed in 2008 the internet lost its collective shit. Thousands of fans signed petitions and rallied against the game, demanding that Blizzard made a change. Why? Because Diablo 3, in a departure from its predecessors, looked like a “cartoon.”

Prior to Diablo 3, Blizzard’s action RPG series had a distinctly gothic visual palette. The stones that walled the dungeons of Diablo 1 and 2 were dark, and the shadows in their crevices even darker. The light generated by flickering flames or bolts of magical lightning illuminated a grim fantasy world with a realistic texture. Well, at least as realistic as PCs of the late 1990s could render. Diablo 3, though, looked like a horror fantasy comic book. Its world glowed with eerie, saturated colours. Its characters were built of exaggerated angles and oversized pauldrons. Its textures were hand-painted reimaginings of the natural world.

Dolphin Emulator Steam Release 'Indefinitely Postponed' After Cease and Desist From Nintendo

11 months 3 weeks ago

The Wii and GameCube emulator Dolphin has had its Steam release 'indefinitely postponed' after the team received a cease and desist order from Nintendo.

The Dolphin Emulator Project team shared the update in a blog, stating it was notified by Valve that Nintendo issued a "cease and desist citing the DMCA against Dolphin's Steam page."

"It is with much disappointment that we have to announce that the Dolphin on Steam release has been indefinitely postponed," The Dolphin Emulator Project wrote. "We were notified by Valve that Nintendo has issued a cease and desist citing the DMCA against Dolphin's Steam page, and have removed Dolphin from Steam until the matter is settled. We are currently investigating our options and will have a more in-depth response in the near future. We appreciate your patience in the meantime."

As reported by PC Gamer, the team launched Dolphin's Steam page on March 28 and, on May 26, received a legal notice from Nintendo that was addressed to Valve's legal department.

"Because the Dolphin emulator violates Nintendo’s intellectual property rights, including but not limited to its rights under the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA)’s Anti-Circumvention and AntiTrafficking provisions, 17 U.S.C. § 1201, we provide this notice to you of your obligation to remove the offering of the Dolphin emulator from the Steam store," the document states.

For a bit more context, Dolphin's ex-treasurer, Pierre Bourdon, took to Mastodon to explain their reading of the situation in greater detail and to explain why this isn't a typical DMCA takedown notice.

Naughty Dog Discusses Last of Us Multiplayer Roadmap After a No-Show at PlayStation Showcase

11 months 3 weeks ago

The PlayStation Showcase 2023 featured an overwhelming amount of announcements, from the Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater remake to Peter Parker’s venom debut in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2. Unfortunately, the Last of Us series was not included in this bunch, regardless of the speculations that said otherwise.

Now, Naughty Dog has finally revealed why they didn’t make it to the event in a recent Twitter post, showcasing the future of the highly-anticipated Last of Us multiplayer game. In the announcement, the company discloses that they needed more time to develop the title as they carry on their work with the upcoming project.

Although Naughty Dog didn’t appear at the showcase, this recent post has caused some excitement within the community due to a mention of a “brand new single-player experience.” Fans are already developing theories for this mysterious title that will seemingly step away from the Last of Us series, at least for now.

Genius Zelda: TOTK Trick Makes Reaching Hyrule’s Skies A Piece of Cake

11 months 3 weeks ago

Since Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom launched – and thanks to awesome new mechanics like fusing – players have been sharing their wild and wicked creations from the acclaimed Nintendo title.

We’ve seen one rather sadistic creation in the form of a medieval torture device for annoying Koroks, while a more epic creation saw one player create a flying war machine straight out of Apocalypse Now.

This particular trick, shared to TOTK’s subreddit on May 25, is certainly more practical and, to readers’ delight, incredibly simple to recreate.

The player, theshmalex, shared their trick to instantly find a platform to ascend by virtue of connecting an arrow with a hover stone. They simply fired it straight up into the sky and, upon reaching the end of its trajectory, the arrow fell away and left the hover stone suspended. It’s then in the perfect position for a timely ascend, moving under it and travelling up into the sky without issue.

OP described it as “super convenient”, which is probably an understatement given how much TOTK requires players to ascend into the sky.

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum Review – So Far From Precious

11 months 3 weeks ago

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum on PS5

The Lord of the Rings: Gollum was a big surprise to fans when it was revealed a few years ago. It seemed like something that no one was asking for, but it still provided a decent concept. As a game based on the unknown movements of Gollum from The Hobbit until Fellowship of the Ring. this should’ve been something that might have broad appeal from the casual viewer to the most fervent Lord of the Rings fan. As it turns out, the game itself feels like it wouldn’t (and shouldn’t) appeal to anyone, ever.

Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 Gameplay Reveals Kraven and Symbiote Suit

11 months 3 weeks ago

While things have been quiet for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, that has all changed during the PlayStation Showcase. The game arrived to tailgate the showcase with a fun chunk of gameplay. The last time we saw the game, it was revealed that Venom (played by Tony Todd) would play a role. However, it’s far more than that. The gameplay kicks off with Kraven the Hunter looking for new hunts before being pointed to New York City.

Six months after the Kraven scene, his goons have invaded the city, hunting down high-profile targets, starting with the Lizard. Spider-Man won’t let them get away with that, and he bursts out of the cellar Kraven’s henchmen are surrounding. Not just any Spider-Man, though, as Peter is wearing the black symbiote suit.

Assassin’s Creed Mirage Vows an October Release

11 months 3 weeks ago

The PlayStation Showcase continues to drop huge reveals with the appearance of the upcoming Assassin’s Creed Mirage. This adventure of Assassins Creed Valhalla character Basim will give fans plenty of his backstory. Not only that, but we got a release date this time after much recent speculation. Assassin’s Creed Mirage will be taking to the air for an Oct. 12 landing.

The trailer even revealed some of the tools at Basim’s disposal. The most useful of these looks like a red smoke bomb that will let him clear out quickly when the guards start closing in. While in the reveal, it looks like he just about teleports after using it, it probably won’t actually work that way.

With how RPG and loot game-focused the recent games have been since Origins, it almost seems like Ubisoft is moving backward from that for this release. However, it also stands to reason that as this is a spin-off and not part of the mainline, it has different rules. Still, Basim is an interesting pick for a solo game.

The footage is narrated by the legendary Shohreh Aghdashloo (The Lake House, Renfield), who lends heavy gravitas to the atmosphere of the trailer. The return to a middle eastern setting with Mirage will surely evoke plenty of memories of the first Assassin’s Creed.

Konami’s Worst Kept Secret is True: Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater Remake is Coming to PS5

11 months 3 weeks ago

After years of hushed whispers, the cat is out of the bag: Konami is indeed bringing Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater to the next generation.

With reports from VGC on the project’s existence circulating as early as October 2021, it only seemed a matter of time until the word was made official. As part of May’s PlayStation Showcase 2023, we caught a quick glimpse of this reimagining of a PS2 classic.

Set in the lush undergrowth of the Soviet Union, we see a brief yet intense sampling of the food chain before Naked Snake emerges from the muck, looking 90% badass and 10% displeased that he’s ruined his favorite jumpsuit.

A PlayStation-appropriate triangle appears in the sky, and the title card confirms that tactical espionage action is indeed coming to PS5. It is worth noting, this triangle in the name likely indicates that this game will be known as Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater. Despite the moniker, however, not a single snake was eaten.

Square Enix Reveals a Splatoon-Like Online Multiplayer Game With Foamstars

Not only will PS4 and PS5 players get themselves into a slippery situation, but they can also create unique builds with the substance, allowing you to surf around the bubbly terrain.

During the PlayStation Showcase 2023, we can get a glimpse of the colorful characters, who each have their own distinct weapon. You can take control of these fighters on a 4v4 map and create vantage points for your teammates to eliminate the competition strategically.

Nintendo fans will certainly have some fun with Foamstars, given its similar gameplay schematics from Splatoon with its liquidy projectiles and entertaining showdowns. Even more so, the cinematics are absolutely breathtaking, especially with illuminating lights of the expansive city.

Fairgame$ Looks To Serve up PvP Heists

11 months 3 weeks ago

The PlayStation Showcase kicked off with a look at Fairgame$, but it was only a cinematic trailer. However, there looks to be a neat game taking shape here. From what was shown, it seems to be some sort of PvP heist game with at least three teams competing for loot.

Working off what the trailer revealed, it seems like several teams will all hit a single target simultaneously. Judging by a character cutting into a fence, it’s possible there will be several points of entry to choose between.

Not only the fence but another character on the same team uses a truck to get past guards. It seems there won’t be any direct need to stay right with your teammates. If the trailer is indicative, the game will feature teams of three, so nine players will compete at once.

Players won’t only be heisting money and valuables, either. The trailer alludes to there being heists related to hard drives and information, so there will certainly be some corporate espionage. It isn’t said, but Fairgame$ certainly looks like something that would fit with a free-to-play model.

There’s no information on when we will see more, but it might be worth keeping an eye on. The trailer also didn’t include any sort of release date, but it will be coming to PS5 and PC sometime in the future.

Emma's Adventures: I did horse dressage in Red Dead Online

11 months 3 weeks ago

Emma's Adventures is a monthly column exclusively for Eurogamer supporters, written by Emma Kent, who has an uncanny knack for finding strange adventures in games. You can support Eurogamer for £3/€3/$3 a month to gain access to a whole variety of things.

As a treat for those of you who aren't supporters, though, we've decided to make Emma's debut adventure, How I made a fashion boutique in Fallout 76, available to all.

Until recently, I knew very little about the world of dressage. My main exposure to the sport was through the Olympics, which would roll around every four years and briefly mesmerise me with horses dancing to The Lion King soundtrack. It didn't hurt, too, that Team GB would typically rake in a cluster of medals each time, thanks to the unrelenting force that is Charlotte Dujardin. Yet beyond this, I knew very little of the sport: how it worked, how it was judged, or how demanding it could be.

Review: Fairy Fencer F: Refrain Chord Feels Like a Fun, Seasonal Anime

11 months 2 weeks ago

Review: Fairy Fencer F: Refrain Chord

In the world of Fairy Fencer F, there are people called Fencers who can wield special weapons crafted by gods known as Furies by making contracts with magical creatures called Fairies which have various looks from animal and robot-like to fully human-like. If this sounds familiar to you, you’re not the only one, as the whole game feels like many anime tropes I’ve learned to love mixed together in a tight, well-developed package.

The case of Fairy Fencer F: Refrain Chord is noteworthy in its own right; it is a sequel being released almost a whole decade after the first game. It completely changes the gameplay from turn-based combats to a tactical RPG, and it does it right. The game’s story follows Fang and his group of Fencers as they try to gather all the Furies to ask for a wish from the Goddess, but on the road, they meet Muses capable of healing or brainwashing anyone who listens to their songs. Now they must be prepared to uncover many secrets and plots that threaten the fate of the whole world.
