New Rune Factory Games are Project Dragon and

Among the new Marvelous Game Showcase 2023 game announcements were two new Rune Factory installments. Rune Factory: Project Dragon and 6 are in development. While Project Dragon is a spin-off that will take place in the teased eastern country, the sixth entry will appear in Adonea in the West.

While there was only a logo for Rune Factory 6, actual gameplay footage for Rune Factory: Project Dragon showed up. There will once again be an Earthmate player with connections to a dragon. The character showed up riding on the dragon to get to different areas. We also got to see them fight in a few battles and use a drum to cause trees to grow. Also, while this is set in an eastern country, a Wooly appeared to suggest familiar monsters could appear. Kenichiro Tsukuda is Project Dragon’s General Producer, Hisahi Fujii is Producer, and Shiro Maekawa is Director.

While there's no name for it yet, Manager Hikaru Nakano called it, “A Story of Seasons you can play with everyone. The presentation also involved peeks at its concept art. Overall, this entry will be one to play with others.

You can see a glimpse of the new game at the 15:45 mark of the video below. It begins by looking at some animals and crops. A chicken with some chicks appears first. Then, there's a look at some tomatoes growing. That's followed by a peek at a sheep, a pair of dogs, and a cow. We also get to see what different seasons and weather conditions look like. All of that is followed by concept art and descriptions of how the goal will be to incorporate multiplayer elements.

Street Fighter 6 ‘How to Play’ Marisa Video Shows Her Scutum Attack

Street Fighter 6 “How to Play” Marisa Video Shows Her Scutum Attack

Right on time, Capcom shared another "how to play as" Street Fighter 6 character video, with Marisa as the newest star. The clip follows the usual pattern. This means the first parts focus on her general abilities and how to use her, then it zeroes in on a specific attack. In this case, it shows how someone could use "Scutum" in a match.

While the beginning of the trailer describes Marisa as a “powerhouse” in Street Fighter 6, the bulk of the video focuses on her Scutum attack. It shows how it can be used both as an aggressive move to attack an opponent, or as a reactionary one to punish someone as they try to attack her. At the end of the trailer, she performs a bridal carry on Ryu, showing it isn’t an action reserved for Zangief.

Alone in the Dark Preview – A Forefather Of Survival Horror Returns

Alone in the Dark preview

Platform: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PC
Publisher: THQ Nordic
Developer: Pieces Interactive
Release:

Before Resident Evil and Silent Hill, 1992’s Alone in the Dark helped lay the foundation for 3D survival horror before the genre even had a name. Players explored a haunted building laden with elaborate puzzles and scary monsters, with gameplay emphasizing thoughtful management of scarce resources. It even featured two playable characters with separate scenarios, an idea later adopted by Resident Evil 2. Numerous sequels of varying quality followed, but it’s been many years since the series was culturally relevant.

Alone in the Dark reboot out in October, playable Prologue available today

We've not heard much from THQ Nordic's Alone in the Dark reboot since its surprise unveiling last year, but now the promising project is back with a 25th October release date and - for the impatient among us - a playable prologue that's available now.

The original Alone in the Dark, for those too young to remember, released in 1992 and offered a genuinely groundbreaking journey into the unknown. It's widely considered to be the granddaddy of the survival horror genre, pioneering the fixed-camera spook-house formula that would go on to influence the likes of Resident Evil and Silent Hill.

THQ Nordic's reimagined version of Alone in the Dark - which is being handled by Swedish developer Pieces Interactive with Soma and Amnesia: The Dark Descent writer Mikael Hedberg at the helm - takes the basic premise of the 1992 original, in which private detective Edward Carnby helps Emily Hartwood investigate her uncle's suicide at the gloomy Derceto Mansion, and cranks up the Southern Gothic as it attempts to filter the originals' blend of exploration, combat, puzzles, and story through a more modern lens.

Alone in the Dark: The First Preview

Survival Horror is a genre we take for granted, but back in 1992 a little game called Alone in the Dark really kickstarted the whole idea, giving us a taste of limited resources and investigative adventure against the odds. Now Pieces Interactive is remaking that classic in a star-studded, atmospheric take that promises to deliver the classic horror plot to modern audiences. Heading that up is Mikael Hedberg, writer and director of Amnesia and Soma, and between his answers and answers from publisher THQ Nordic at a press Q&A things are looking pretty promising as we gear up to return to the deeply haunted Louisiana Bayou around Derceto.

The big reveal is that Stranger Things actor David Harbour will be playing the role of detective Edward Carnby, a hard boiled scenery-chewing role that's a perfect cast for Harbour and one that he seems genuinely excited to undertake. Meanwhile Killing Eve actress Jodie Comer will take over as Emily Hartwood, the woman who has hired Carnby to investigate the fate of her uncle while she pries deeper into her family secret, the mystery-shrouded "Hartwood Curse."

Pieces looks to be keeping many key elements of the early Alone in the Dark games in their remake, especially the series' classic melee combat: While getting stuck in with a monster was a death sentence in later Survival Horror, carving up Ghouls with a sword was always a much better choice than wasting precious bullets on them.

Rune Factory 6, New Story of Seasons, and Daemon X Machina Sequel Announced During Marvelous Stream

Marvelous revealed today that it is working on several new games, including Rune Factory 6, Rune Factory: Project Dragon, a new Story of Seasons, and Daemon X Machina Titanic Scion.

Rune Factory 6 is currently in development and the game will take place in the western continent of Adonea. Rune Factory: Project Dragon is a spin-off set in the “Land of the East.” The latter's setting has been referenced throughout the series but was never shown. Project Dragon is inspired by Japanese culture and will represent the East while Rune Factory 6 represents the West.

The next Story of Seasons game will explore the theme of “experiences.” Series manager Hikaru Nakano said that the future entry is one where everyone can play with each other, which could possibly hint at some sort of co-op or multiplayer aspect.

Daemon X Machina: Titanic Scion is a sequel to 2019’s Daemon X Machina. Producer Kenichiro Tsukuda is returning for the game. Back in 2021, Tsukuda confirmed that a follow-up to the third-person mech shooter game was in development.

Homeworld 3 Has Been Delayed to 2024

Developer Blackbird Interactive and publisher Gearbox have announced that Homeworld 3 has been delayed to February 2024. It was originally planned to launch during the first half of 2023.

“Our primary goal is to deliver a Homeworld experience that lives up to the standards set by its predecessors and is worthy of this series’ incredible legacy,” Blackbird and Gearbox explained in a statement on Twitter.

They continued, saying, “Homeworld 3 is shaping up to be exactly that, but in order to fully realize that vision we need more time to refine and polish the game.”

Homeworld 3 was first announced all the way back in 2019 for PC. The game was initially scheduled to release in Q4 2022 but then was delayed into 2023 in order to protect the health of the developers. The game will also feature simplified controls. Now, fans will have to wait at least another year.

EU explains Microsoft Activision deal approval - and why it disagrees with the UK's block

The boss of the European Commission has explained in detail why her agency approved Microsoft's $68.7bn Activision Blizzard deal - and why she thinks the UK was wrong to block it.

In a speech given yesterday, European Commission executive vice president Margrethe Vestager laid out the regulator's own "call of duty" to only block buyouts when really necessary.

"Merger control is by nature a forward-looking exercise," Vestager said. "But that power comes with challenges... And to make things even more complicated, for global deals many authorities are predicting the future, at the same time. Of course we cooperate, but disagreements sometimes happen. No less recently than last week, we cleared the Microsoft/Activision deal, while the CMA decided to block it."

It's this last point that presumably covers the duplication glitches that seem to have been removed.

Official Mega Man slippers will leave you suited and booted for the summer

Have you ever looked at Mega Man's all blue aesthetic and thought, "yes, I like that ensemble, and I would absolutely wear it, but those boots just don't look comfortable"?

If you answered yes to that question, well I have some good news. The officially-licenced Mega Man slippers will be available this summer (23rd June, to be precise).

Clothing and costume store Fun has unveiled this new pair of Mega Man slippers, which have been designed to resemble Mega Man's classic series look. They have a stitched Mega Man on the side, and red emblems on the sole. Surely, a much more comfortable option for lounging around the house in than Mega Man's own, robotic booties.

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet Getting Pokémon Home Support Next Week, for Real This Time

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet support is finally being added to Pokémon Home on May 30 after Nintendo announced and then cancelled the update last week.

As reported by Serebii, Pokémon Home will go down ahead of the update as it undergoes maintenance, meaning players won't be able to access the service from 5pm Pacific / 8pm Eastern on May 29 for six hours.

Though players on the west coast of the U.S. will therefore be able to access Version 3.0 of Pokémon Home at 11pm on May 29, most players around the world will have access to the updated app on May 30. East coast players can access the update at 2am, UK players at 7am, and AEST players at 4pm.

Version 3.0 will allow players to move Pokémon from Scarlet and Violet into Home and vice versa, finally adding the long-awaited feature to the latest pocket monster adventure six months after launch.

It was expected a little sooner, however, as Nintendo announced last week that the update would arrive on May 23 before retracting the statement by saying it "put the cart before the Mudsale" and didn't mean to announce a release date.

It's not the only issue players have had with Pokémon Scarlet and Violet though, as it launched with myriad glitches that continue to persist in different forms.

Alone in the Dark Reboot Arrives This October, Demo Available Now

THQ Nordic has announced that the Alone in the Dark reboot is launching October 25 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC and that a free demo is available now.

Users on these platforms can download the playable prologue of Alone in the Dark to experience what the full game will have to offer without receiving any spoilers from the main story. The standalone demo puts players in the shoes of 11-year-old Grace Saunders as she runs an errand that quickly goes wrong.

The publisher also revealed that Stranger Things' David Harbour will star as one dual-protagonist Edward Carnby while Killing Eve's Jodie Comer will play the other, Emily Hartwood.

Players can choose to play through the story as either character, though THQ Nordic promises that each character will provide a different take on the same narrative.

"Explore Derceto Manor in this reimagination of Alone in the Dark, a love letter to the 90’s cult classic horror game," reads the announcement. "Set in the gothic American south in the 1920s, Alone in the Dark features a noir-setting with classical Lovecraftian horror-elements, where the familiar meets the surreal."

First announced in August 2022, THQ Nordic has gone relatively quiet on Alone in the Dark since, only re-emerging now to announce the release date and prologue. In our first preview of the game, IGN said "the team and motivation seem right to deliver an exciting take on a classic of horror gaming."

Tears of the Kingdom Patch Removes Every Duplication Glitch

Nintendo has released a patch for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom that removes every duplication glitch from the game, meaning players may want to hold off on updating to Version 1.1.2 of Tears of the Kingdom if they hope to keep using the duplication glitches to essentially gain infinite rupees.

While the patch notes don't mention the removal of these glitches, that were quickly discovered by players looking to break the launch version of the game, all known methods of duplicating items have been removed.

This includes perhaps the most popular arrow glitch, which let players duplicate any item fused with an arrow, alongside the weapon and shield glitch and more.

The official patch notes do address some other issues. Nintendo has "fixed an issue where the sound would play at an extremely high volume in certain conditions" and an issue in the Camera Work in the Depths quest that stopped progression.

Though these are the only two specific bugs addressed, Nintendo added that "several issues have been addressed to improve the gameplay experience".

Dolph Lundgren lets slip he's in a Witcher spin-off show

Movie star Dolph Lundgren has let slip he's set to star in a Witcher spin-off TV show.

Lundgren, perhaps most famous for playing boxer Ivan Drago in Rocky 4, told Swedish publication Aftonbladet he's in South Africa shooting a spinoff series of The Witcher, which Collider speculates is the upcoming show about the Rats.

The Rats are a group of young Nilfgaardian thieves introduced in Andrzej Sapkowski's Time of Contempt novel. The third season of The Witcher (the last starring Henry Cavill as Geralt of Rivia), adapts this book, and so the expectation is the Rats will be introduced to fans of the show before their spin-off hits the screen.

Game of the Week: The weird world of licensed games

Our game of the week is Warhammer 40K: Boltgun, a kind of wilful throwback to the glorious days of early shooters. Rick loved it - with caveats - and the whole premise has a gleeful immediacy that makes it hard to resist.

It's an immediacy that was distinctly lacking from this week's other biggish release. This was The Lord of the Rings: Gollum, which I struggled through, intermittently seeing the beauty in it, but more often being frustrated by a game whose many problems ate away at all the potential. I'll remember this game - I do believe that. But I'll remember it with melancholy. A team really tried here, and they had some interesting ideas, but wider problems defeated them.

There may not seem to be a lot in common between the two biggies this week, but look sideways and they share one thing. They're both licensed games. They're both licensed games in the modern sense, too. Both Warhammer and Tolkien are licenses we see a lot. Scrolling Tiktok, there are a handful of these forever licenses - mobile games for 40K and for Star Trek and Star Wars always seem to be scrolling past.

We now know the Alone in the Dark release date. It will debut on October 25, 2023. However, people can play before then. Grace in the Dark, a prologue demo for the upcoming Alone in the Dark reboot is now available to play.

The demo follows young child Grace Saunders, as she explores Derceto Manor. This playable prologue won’t include any combat, focusing entirely on exploration as the player controls a child character. The demo is now available for the PS5, Xbox Series X, and PC via Steam.

The demo is the same one that was available to the public at the Gamescom 2022 event and Tokyo Game Show 2022. During this playable prologue, the player controls Grace Saunders as she is tasked by Jeremy Hartwood to deliver a letter to his niece Emily. The demo was made available shortly after the May 2023 spotlight event for the game, which also revealed the release date of the game as October 25, 2023.

The upcoming Alone in the Dark is a re-imagining of the original 1992 PC game that fostered the survival horror genre. The game is being developed by Pieces Interactive and published by THQ Nordic.

Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Includes Original Metal Gear 1 and 2 Alongside Solid Trilogy

The PlayStation Store has revealed the Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1 to include the original Metal Gear 1 and 2 alongside the Solid Trilogy as previously announced.

As reported by Eurogamer, the previously teased additional games coming to the Master Collection Vol. 1 look to be the two classic titles released for the MSX2.

The collection was announced earlier this week as a three-in-one package containing Metal Gear Solid 1, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, though Konami teased that fans should "stay tuned for more information" regarding additional content.

The PlayStation Store listing has let the cat out of the bag, however, saying the "Volume 1 line-up features the original titles and beginning of the Metal Gear Series" including Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake.

This essentially makes the package a modern console version of the Metal Gear HD Collection released for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, though Konami will likely soon confirm the full extent of its contents ahead of its launch this fall.

Remake of 1998 Visual Novel One Will Come Out in December

One visual novel

One., a remake of the classic visual novel One: Kagayaku Kisetsu E, will come out on Steam on December 22, 2023. It'll be available in English, Japanese, Traditional Chinese, and Simplified Chinese. Nexton released the original game in 1998. Though there is a Steam page available where you can wishlist the game, it’s unclear how much it will cost.

The remade version of One: Kagayaku Kisetsu E will come out for the 30th anniversary of Nexton, which is the company that developed the game. Since there is no warning on Steam, it likely will not have any erotic content, much like the PlayStation port. The original One: Kagayaku Kisetsu E for Windows PC was an adult visual novel.

One: Kagayaku Kisetsu E puts the player in the role of Kohei Orihara, who is a Japanese high school student. After the death of his father, Kohei becomes depressed and shuts himself in the Eternal World, which is a space inside of his mind. It becomes more and more difficult for him to leave, and there is a danger of being forgotten if you’re stuck in the Eternal World. Through his relationships with the six heroines in the story, he starts to ground himself more in reality.
