Final Fantasy XVI Sounds Fun, But Series Vets Might Have It Rough

1 year 1 month ago

Final Fantasy XVI is due out on June 22, 2023 on PlayStation 5, following what could perhaps be best described as an identity crisis for the long-running RPG series. Promising a radically different tone for both storytelling and combat, FFXVI is ready to shake things up and, potentially, make a name for itself as a…

Summer Game Fest live show will feature three or four "pretty big" things

1 year 1 month ago

Summer Game Fest is almost upon us, kicking off with a live showcase before splintering into a "season" of disparate publisher events in the absence of E3. But first that showcase, which is now confirmed to be two hours in length, and featuring at least a couple of "pretty big" things.

Summer Game Fest gets underway on 8th June, with a live show consisting of premieres, gameplay demos, and announcements. That's pretty much as far as details went in previous teases, but now, in an interview on the Epic Games Store, show host and producer Geoff Keighley has now shared a little more about what to expect from the format.

Alongside its now confirmed two-hour duration, Keighley suggests Summer Game Fest live will be a little more laidback compared to the bombastic Game Awards, offering a "chance to talk to the developers and showcase games and give a little bit more context around games". While the exact line-up still appears to be in flux, Keighley does say he expects the Summer Game Fest live show to feature three or four things that are "pretty big for this audience."

Spider-Man 2 Co-Op Seemingly Teased by Voice Actor, Insomniac Says It's Not Happening

1 year 1 month ago

Miles Morales voice actor Nadji Jeter has shared some new information about Insomniac's Spider-Man 2, along with an apparent tease of co-op play that developer Insomniac Games has already shut down.

In a panel from SacAnime Summer 2022 (that was recently noticed in a resetera thread), Jeter answers a few questions about Miles Morales' role in the upcoming game.

In the question and answer portion of his panel, Jeter was asked if Spider-Man 2 will have co-op, where two players team up as Miles and Peter Parker. Jeter responded, "I don't know if it's been announced or not, but I think so."

Developer Insomniac Games confirmed on Twitter that Spider-Man 2 is an "epic single-player adventure", so it's likely that Jeter was simply referring to multiple playable characters rather than co-op. For example, there could be character swapping throughout the campaign between Miles and Peter.

A fan also asked Jeter if Miles was going to get infected with the Venom symbiote in Spider-Man 2, and Jeter simply replied, "They're everywhere. [Symbiotes] are going to be everywhere."

The Best Dice-Rolling Board Games (2023)

1 year 1 month ago

Dice are used to add an aspect of randomness to plenty of the best board games, but many modern games use dice as a more core mechanic. From roll and write board games inspired by Yahtzee to dice drafting games where the faces on a die represent resources the players compete over, these games make rolling more than just a measure of how far you can move or who wins a skirmish in a war game.

Dice-rolling games are highly diverse, including quick games perfect for big groups of all ages, fully cooperative games where you’ll need to work together closely to win, and highly strategic games you’ll want to play multiple times to master. Test your luck by rolling the dice with these great games.

Halo Infinite Is Finally Getting Infection Mode Next Month

1 year 1 month ago

Fan-favorite Halo multiplayer mode Infection is coming to Season 4 of Halo Infinite. The mode will drop the same day the next season kicks off on June 20, developer 343 Industries has announced.

Infection is the Halo series' take on a zombie mode, which first debuted in Halo 3. Since then, the mode has returned in Halo Reach, Halo 2 Anniversary, and Halo 5: Guardians, with an altered version of the mode titled Flood taking Infection's place in Halo 4. 343 shared a piece of new concept art for Halo Infinite's Infection mode alongside the announcement.

Traditionally, Infection pits two teams against each other: A team of Survivors equipped with shotguns, and a team of Infected wielding Energy Swords. When a zombie eliminates a survivor, the survivor is converted to a member of the infected team.

Career Rank is also coming to Halo Infinite Season 4, which will give players a new progression style with military-style ranks. Plus, players can expect an official Forge remake of Halo 5's Plaza map sometime early in Season 4. To wrap up Season 3, Halo Infinite is hosting its first Bonus XP Weekend from June 2 to June 4.

Halo Infinite's fourth season is coming just three-and-a-half months after Season 3's launch, marking a much faster turnaround than the 10 months in between Season 2 and 3. The faster launch of Season 4 makes good on 343's promise to avoid the long seasons of the past and end Infinite's content drought.

Star Trek Resurgence Review

1 year 1 month ago

Star Trek and a Telltale-style adventure game seems like a match made in heaven. The two just fit; Star Trek’s best and most beloved stories are about dialogue. Not just two characters talking to each other, but about how people relate to one another and the world around them. It’s about the choices we make when faced with tough decisions, what we could be if we learned from our past mistakes, and the strength gained by uniting diverse peoples and cultures. All of that can be hard to do in a video game, which are typically too busy firing phasers and torpedoes to get more than a few words in edgewise. Star Trek: Resurgence’s conversation-heavy approach doesn’t always work, but it never loses sight of what makes Star Trek, well… Star Trek. And when the developers at Dramatic Labs lock onto that signal, it nails the series’ appeal while providing an engaging story full of memorable characters.

Resurgence follows the crew of the USS Resolute, picking up a few years after the end of Star Trek: Nemesis (the final Next Generation films). The story puts you in control of two instantly likable characters: Jara Rydeck, a humble yet accomplished Academy graduate who has been brought in to be the ship’s new first officer; and Carter Diaz, a charming and funny, adventure-hungry engineer who used his great talent to skip the Academy and enlists to get and out see the galaxy.

Experts Explain Why So Many Games Are Launching Broken on PC

1 year 1 month ago

PC releases are under scrutiny as of late. When compared to their console counterparts, PC games more frequently experience anything from immense graphical glitches to game breaking bugs regardless of an individual’s specific build. And since many high-end rigs cost upwards of thousands of dollars, questions often arise as to why so many titles launch in unplayable states.

Games like The Last of Us Part 1 Remake, Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, Redfall, and even Final Fantasy 7 Remake recently suffered from ports that required extensive post-launch patches to fix. Speaking with IGN, three experts familiar with porting games to PC discuss the challenges of porting, the complexities behind changing control methods, and how studios can work to potentially eliminate rough launches.

Challenging PC Ports

To the average player, it may be confusing when a PC game with a simultaneous release on consoles fails to function. If the price is the same and the overall content of the game is identical, regardless of platform, why are there such stark differences with performance? Senior staff writer and video producer for Digital Foundry John Linneman says that one of the primary problems with bugs may be PC gaming’s biggest selling point – customizable systems.

“One of the biggest hurdles is the variety of hardware configurations available - consoles are fixed platforms, but PCs are wide open,” Linneman said. “Any user can have a PC built from a variety of parts running a different operating system with different drivers. For games that push the visual envelope, this can put a lot of stress on the hardware, resulting in sub-par performance for some users. There are only so many permutations a developer can test while building their game, so it’s very likely that upon release, day-one buyers will immediately uncover issues that require patching.”

Final Fantasy 16 Director: 'Maybe It's Time to Remove the Numbers From the Title'

1 year 1 month ago

Final Fantasy is one of the longest-running numbered series in gaming, but with Final Fantasy XVI set to release next month, Square Enix may be rethinking its approach to its famous roman numerals.

In an interview with GQ UK, Final Fantasy XVI producer Naoki Yoshida was asked whether ditching numbers for future Final Fantasy games was ever considered.

“That's actually something that I've discussed with the higher-ups," Yoshida responded. "Maybe it's about time we removed the numbers from the title. For example, you have Final Fantasy 14. You get a new player coming in and it's like, ‘Wait a minute, why do I have to play Final Fantasy 14 if 16 is out?’ Why don't we just call it Final Fantasy Online – just get rid of the number altogether, and that'll make it easier to understand.”

He continued: “Whether Final Fantasy 17 or Final Fantasy 18 should have a number or not – that's going to be on whoever has to develop that game and whoever's in charge of the branding, so that's their problem, not ours!”

Yoshida also mentioned that lots of new players go into the franchise and view it like a comic book where you have to read from the beginning to know what’s going on in the latest iterations. As a result, it’s difficult for marketing because with every single numbered title in the series, Square Enix has to clarify that players don’t have to play previous numbered games in order to understand the newest one.

If Elders Scrolls 6 steals one thing from Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom, it should be Link's best cheat power

1 year 1 month ago

For the last six years, my Skyrim wood elf has been stuck in some godforsaken cave in goodness knows what corner of Tamriel. I don't remember why they were there, or what goal they were trying to achieve. It was just 'one of those caves' that looked cool and interesting when I came across it and I thought, 'Yeah, all right, let's have a go then, shall we?' But while other Skyrim caves I'd come across could be easily polished off in an office lunch-time - as that was often how I played Skyrim back then - this one was different somehow. It was so large and twisty, so infinitely befuddling, that I seemed to be trapped down there forever. Sure, I could have probably turned back, but I'd been down there for ages, and felt like I'd come too far to simply not see it all through to the bitter end. But the end never came, and I eventually abandoned my save as a result, whisked off by the prospect of newer, more exciting games that didn't involve trying to figure out how to escape its narrow, bioluminescent hellscape.

Ubisoft's Star Wars game reportedly targeting "early 2024" release

Amid records losses and a raft of cancelled games, Ubisoft is reportedly aiming to release Massive Entertainment's long-awaited open-world Star Wars game in "early 2024".

Announced back in 2021, little is known about The Division developer Massive Entertainment's open-world Star Wars game, beyond the fact it's being helmed by The Division 2 director Julian Gerighty and will utilise the studio's Snowdrop engine.

With so little information currently out in the wild, many had assumed Massive's Star Wars project was still some considerable way off, but Kotaku is now reporting the title is, in fact, the mysterious "another large game" Ubisoft has previously confirmed to be launching during its 2023-24 fiscal year, with the publisher said to be targeting an "early 2024" launch.

Tears of the Kingdoms Builders Have Graduated to Looney Tunes Traps and Podracers

1 year 1 month ago

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is an endless viral video generator. Since the game came out last week, players have surprised and delighted us with some of the things they've been able to do with Ultrahand. It's truly a game best suited for the social media age, as watching other people's gameplay clips could spark inspiration for something you want to try out yourself.

When we highlighted some of the best Tears of the Kingdom player creations last week, we showed you some genuinely impressive mechs and vehicles. This time, we're getting a little funnier with it, as players have been sharing some hilarious contraptions and moments that look like they came straight out of a Looney Tunes cartoon.

Link Tricks a Bokoblin Into Getting Crushed

Sure, you can just whack a Bokoblin with a stick a few times to take it out, or you can do this. Over on Reddit, u/Youngstown_Mafia posted a hilarious clip of what can happen when you take a Bokoblin's weapon away.

Here's how they did it. Using a Zonai Mirror, Link blinds the Bokoblin, causing it to drop its weapon. Our hero runs over and snatches the weapon away before the enemy has a chance to recover it. Naturally, the Bokoblin starts scrounging around for a new weapon. But when it picks up the weapon the player rigged to a trap, it's instantly crushed by a giant crate. To complete the show, explosions ensue, of course.

Inkbound is a co-op turn-based roguelike, a jumble of genres I've seen so many times in the past decade they no longer conjure any feelings for me. It's also from the developers of Monster Train, however, the uncommonly good card game about stopping an onslaught aboard a multi-storey train to hell. That pedigree means it's worth noting that Inkbound is now in early access.

How to Get More Batteries in Tears of the Kingdom

1 year 1 month ago

Along with hearts and stamina, one of the most precious resources in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is your battery life. And we don't mean the battery of your Nintendo Switch that keeps running out from playing so much.

Link's Zonai batteries power all of his machines when outside Shrines, and you'll quickly discover that the single battery's worth of power he has at the start of the game is hardly enough to be getting on with. And while a Zonai Construct explains how to increase your battery early on, the numerous terms it throws at you so early (Crystallized Charges! Zonaite! What?) can seem overwhelming - not to mention how annoying it is to return to Great Sky Island to get upgrade materials when you do manage to figure it all out.

Fortunately, there are ways to make this much easier. We have a upgrading your battery in ToTK guide (aka upgrading your Energy Cell) in Tears of the Kingdom, but here's a short version if you just want some quick guidance on how to get more batteries in Tears of the Kingdom:

Collect Zonaite from the Depths

Whenever you're beneath the surface, you'll occasionally spot deposits of ore that seem to sparkle turquoise (not to be confused with glowing Luminous Stones). This is Zonaite, and you should mine all you can. You need three Zonaite to get one Crystallized Charge, and 300 to upgrade a battery one-third of the way. That's a lot of Zonaite! There are other ways to get Zonaite, such as by defeating certain enemies, but this is the most common one.

Insomniac confirms Marvel's Spider-Man 2 won't have co-op

1 year 1 month ago

Insomniac has dismissed growing reports its upcoming Marvel's Spider-Man 2 will feature co-op, confirming it's an "epic single-player adventure".

Some publications began reporting potential co-op support in Spider-Man 2 earlier this week after fans unearthed comments made by Miles Morales voice actor Nadji Jeter last September. When asked if Spider-Man 2 would feature co-op during a SacAnime Summer 2022 Q&A, Jeter replied, "I don't know if it's been announced or not, but I think so."

Co-op speculation has followed Spider-Man 2 ever since Insomniac announced Peter Parker and Miles Morales would both play a prominent role in the sequel, but the studio has now shot down co-op chatter once and for all. After a fan tweeted to ask if co-op was on the cards, it replied wrote, "Nope! It is an epic single-player adventure!".

NetEase Games has announced the founding of a new game studio based in Canada. The studio is headed up by Sean Crooks, a former Ubisoft producer with credits ranging from Just Dance and Driver to the Watch Dogs franchise. Other members of the team include developers who have worked on series like Splinter Cell, Army of Two, Far Cry, and Child of Light.

The team hopes its first project will kickstart a new franchise. The title is an open-world, story-driven action/adventure title that draws inspiration from '80s action and horror films. Bad Brain is using Unreal Engine 5 to develop its debut title, which will launch across multiple platforms.

Could Final Fantasy 16 be the last numbered Final Fantasy game?

1 year 1 month ago

Final Fantasy 16 producer Naoki Yoshida has said he thinks "Maybe it's time we removed the numbers" from Final Fantasy games. In an interview with GQ, he talked about the baggage that inevitably comes with having a 35-year-old series with soon to be 16 numbered mainline games in it (not including the sequels and spin-offs, I might add), and the confusion it continues to create with new players. "Every numbered title we release in the series, we have to go into it like, 'It's OK, you don't have to play the rest of them,'" he said, and removing them is "something that I've discussed with the higher-ups". It's an understandable problem, for sure, although I think I'd be quite sad to see the numerals go entirely. As long as they don't pull a Mortal Kombat and go back to 1, though, we're good.

Humanity review: perfect puzzles pumped with existential hot air

1 year 1 month ago

I bark and the humans obey, jumping, turning, floating into the great unknown. I am leading them toward something good, the orbs tell me. Something that grows stronger with every trial this endless parade of humanity completes.

Humanity is a VR-optional flowy puzzle platformer in which you, an ethereal shiba inu made of pure light, lead mindless hoards of “the people” into the light because a glowing orb told you to make it happen. Oh, and don’t worry if most of them end up marching off a ledge into the endless void below–those physical bodies are mere constructs and their minds will return to follow you again.

Exoprimal devs tell us how they pushed for thousands of onscreen dinosaurs, and why it bears no relation to Dino Crisis

1 year 1 month ago

Last july I was given the opportunity to play an early beta for Exoprimal, Capcom’s upcoming multiplayer shooter that pits you and a bunch of your mech suit-wearing buddies against unstoppable raptor hordes. In the nine months since I took command of a T-Rex and did a sick backflip, my life has not known peace. “I’m really excited to play Exoprimal” I’ll say to colleagues, unprompted, in important meetings unrelated to anything prehistoric in nature. “From what I've played, it blends PvE and PvP gameplay into a single multiplayer mode that feels very unique and hugely entertaining”. My tax return was voided because I drew a big stegosaurus on it. I have renamed the cat “Sniper Neosaur”, and I am disappointed that she has yet to emerge from a gooey purple orb.

It was my delight, then, to be given the opportunity to sit down with key members of the game’s development team to discuss Exoprimal’s inspirations, its inevitable comparisons to Dino Crisis and how Capcom plans to use it as a template for their live-service games moving forward. Alongside a fresh opportunity to check out the game, I hopped onto a Zoom call with Exoprimal’s director Takuro Hiraoka, technical director Kazuki Abe and art director Takuro Fuse.

Blizzard hops on controversial AI train with concept art tool

1 year 1 month ago

Blizzard's chief design officer Allen Adham has reportedly told staff to "prepare to be amazed" by the company's AI technology.

An email seen by the New York Times regarding 'Blizzard Diffusion' was sent to employees earlier this year. Blizzard Diffusion is the company's internal AI tool, which has allegedly been trained as an image generator on Blizzard's own titles (its name is a play on Stable Diffusion, another AI image generation platform).

Reportedly, this tool was being used "to help generate concept art for game environments as well as characters and their outfits". Adham also made mention of possible tools for "autonomous, intelligent, in-game NPCs," "procedurally assisted level design" and AI-assisted "voice cloning," "game coding" and "anti-toxicity" in his email.
