The Latest Batch Of Switch Online GBA Games Is Just Cruel

1 year 1 month ago

The Game Boy Advance isn’t the best gaming handheld ever, but it’s certainly the one I’m most nostalgic about. It let me take gorgeous spin-offs of my favorite 16-bit SNES games on the go, and most importantly included some incredible pixel art gems the likes of which we’ve never seen since. So why is Nintendo wasting…

Sonic Symphony World Tour bringing classic tunes and a live orchestra to London in September

1 year 1 month ago

If your ears, like mine, find Sonic CD's Sonic Boom or Sonic the Hedgehog 3's Ice Cap Zone Act 1 theme to be like soothing lullabies whispered from a distant past, then you might be interested in the Sonic Symphony World Tour, which is turning some of the series' best-loved tunes into a live concert starting at London's Barbican in September.

Described as an "immersive live experience that celebrates more than three decades of music from Sega's iconic mascot", Sonic Symphony promises a "musical tour" through the series' history. It'll feature "classic 8-bit and 16-bit tunes to rock and EDM songs", all played by a full symphony orchestra and rock band - and accompanied by on-screen Sonic footage for the benefit of those requiring eye stimulation along with the amusement to their ears.

Sega and show organiser MGP Live have announced two dates for the Sonic Symphony World Tour so far, beginning with a performance at London's Barbican Hall on 16th September this year. After that, it'll depart the UK and head over to the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, California, for a second show on 30th September.

More Super Mario Advance GBA Games Coming to Nintendo Switch Online

1 year 1 month ago

Super Mario Advance GBA Games Nintendo Switch Online

Three more classic Super Mario GBA games are coming to Nintendo Switch Online. The Game Boy Advance library will be gaining Super Mario Advance, Super Mario World: Super Mario Advance 2 and Yoshi’s Island: Super Mario Advance 3. All three games will be released on May 26, 2023.

All three titles are part of the Super Mario Advance series which brought classic 2D Mario titles to the Game Boy Advance. The first Super Mario Advance game is a remake of Super Mario Bros 2. The second and third games are remakes of Super Mario World and Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island respectively. They join Super Mario Advance 4, which launched along with the GBA library earlier this year. This was a remake of Super Mario Bros 3.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nRyFVwRqUKI

The original versions of all three games are already in the Nintendo Switch Online library. Super Mario Bros 2 is in the NES library, while Super Mario World and Yoshi’s Island are in the SNES library. However, there are some differences in the Advance versions. All the games gained graphical improvements and a few gameplay additions. For example, Yoshi’s Island: Super Mario Advance 3 gained six new levels not in the original game.

All three Super Mario Advance GBA games come with a remake of the original Mario Bros arcade game.

Xenoblade Chronicles 3 Mio Figma Can Wield her Dual Moonblades or Flute

Xenoblade Chronicles 3 Mio Figure Can Wield her Dual Moonblades or Flute

Good Smile Company opened pre-orders for the Xenoblade Chronicles 3 Mio figma, and the figure will appear worldwide in 2024. It will first show up in Japan. The release window for it there is February 2024, and it will cost ¥12,000. In North America, there's a more generic Q2 2024 releasw window and $85.99 price tag. The last time we saw it was back in February 2023, when Good Smile Company showed an unpainted prototype.

All of Mio’s face plates and accessories pull from moments in Xenoblade Chronicles 3. For example, she has a neutral, relaxed face, one with closed eyes for when she’s performing her Offseer duties, a face plate where she’s smiling, and another where she’s yelling as if during a fight. You can pose her with her hair long or short. There’s also a flute for offseeing, a diary for keeping her notes as her time approaches, and the Dual Moonblades she wields as a Zephyr.

Here's a closer look at her:

6.4 Final Fantasy XIV Preliminary Patch Notes Shared

6.4 Final Fantasy XIV Preliminary Patch Notes Shared

Square Enix shared the preliminary 6.4 Final Fantasy XIV patch notes, which spend time going over some of the new story quest, sidequest, dungeon, trial, and raid details. As this is just an initial overview, not every detail is there. For example, there is information about some quests and new dungeons and trials. However, specifics for job changes and other alterations don’t come up yet. Those appear closer to launch.

The 6.4 Final Fantasy XIV patch notes start by going over details about new quests. The new Main Scenario Quests kick off with “Currying Flavor.” You’ll need to be a Disciple of War or Magic at level 90 who finished “Gods Revel, Lands Tremble” to take part. If you have, then you can visit Varshahn at Radz-at-Han (X:4.4 Y:9.8) to start it. It’s the first of nine new quests. If you beat Chronicles of a New Era’s "Truth Imperfect,” you can continue that storyline with “Eater of Souls.” People who meet the Disciple of War or Magic requirement can meet Ruissenaud at Labyrinthos (X:8.6 Y:27.5) to start the first of five new quests. There are also three new. Tataru's Grand Endeavor quests, which begin with “Aggressive Expansion.” That requires you to finish both the “previous quest in that line “Small Business, Big Dreams” and the Chronicles of a New Era one "Forever at Your Side."

Final Fantasy XVI Voice Actor for Clive Talked About Playing the Character

Square Enix released a new Final Fantasy XVI video, and this one features Clive voice actor Ben Starr talking about the role. For the over 20 minute presentation, he sat down with Producer Naoki Yoshida and Localization Director Michael-Christopher Koji Fox to discuss the character, the story, and other things that came up during recording and the making of the game.

It begins with Starr talking about who Clive is, then goes deeper into topics such as what makes him a hero, and the character’s biggest challenge. It also goes into the actor’s specific experience, such as explaining how familiar he was with Final Fantasy as a whole before playing the role. At that part, Yoshida noted it’d help if the actors playing roles would be Final Fantasy fans. Starr noted how much weight be felt and it all carried due to his background with the story, as he knew the legacy of the crystals and said he grew up with the games. He said, “I understood the weight of it” when talking about being picked to play the role.

Here’s the full Final Fantasy XVI “Creators Make Clive” interview with Ben Starr.

Other games Starr specifically appeared in include Arknights and Quantum Break.

Overwatch 2 Director Apologizes for Canceling PvE Hero Mode, Makes Big Promises for Story Missions

1 year 1 month ago

In what he described as an "emotional week", director Aaron Keller opened up about the decision to cancel Overwatch 2's planned PvE Hero mode, saying that the team "struggled to find its footing" amid what he called high expectations for the mode.

"Things rarely go as planned in game development. We struggled to find our footing with the Hero Mission experience early on. Scope grew," Keller wrote in a new blog post. "We were trying to do too many things at once and we lost focus. The team built some really great things, including hero talents, new enemy units and early versions of missions, but we were never able to bring together all of the elements needed to ship a polished, cohesive experience."

According to Keller, the PvE Hero mode was an "exciting but gargantuan vision" that kept pulling resources away from the live game. Finally, Keller says, the development team realized it had to walk away.

"This has been hard for us, but as the director on this project, I have to do my best to make decisions that put the game and the community first, even when those decisions are disappointing. In this case, I had trouble pivoting away from a vision that just wasn’t working. And for that I would like to apologize to our players and to our team. I'm sorry," Keller wrote.

Tears of the Kingdom Hints That Link and Zelda Are Finally in a Relationship

1 year 1 month ago

Since the beginning of the Legend of Zelda series, Nintendo has remained ambiguous over if Zelda and Link are in a relationship or strictly friends (or siblings). But Zelda's voice actor, along with a key location in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, has apparently hinted that the two are in a relationship.

In an interview with TheGamer, Zelda's voice actor, Patricia Summersett, revealed that she believes Zelda and Link are in a relationship.

"I know that [Link and Zelda] are in a relationship with each other, it’s active, there’s a lot of care and a lot of listening, and I just love that about it,” Summersett said.

However, she also appreciates how Nintendo's lack of confirmation can leave things open for interpretation.

"As a voice actor, looking at the overall relationship between Link and Zelda over the ages, I personally love the ambiguity and that if there is something there it’s left to us," Summersett said. "I guess in my own life, I can respect and celebrate relationships that aren’t conventional."

Link and Zelda in love?

Her claims about Zelda and Link's relationship are seemingly backed up by details in Zelda's house in Hateno Village, which was previously Link's house in Breath of the Wild. Inside Zelda's house, players will find two chairs and plates at the table and a bed that Link can sleep in, implying that the two share a house and bed. Link cannot sleep in beds that are not his or at inns.

Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom's First Patch Fixes Broken Main Quest

1 year 1 month ago

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom’s first patch has landed, and while it’s fairly minimal it will come as a relief to anyone whose progress has been barred by The Closed Door quest.

As logged by Nintendo’s support website, the newly released version 1.1.1 has fixed an issue where “sometimes, the player could not clear main quest “The Closed Door,” even if they fulfilled the conditions to advance the quest.”

The patch notes say that the new update will fix the problem even if you’ve already encountered the issue, so those who were stuck at The Closed Door should now be able to continue on the main quest uninterrupted.

Beyond the fix to the Closed Door quest, Nintendo just says that v1.1.1 addresses several issues “to improve the gameplay experience.”

No mention is made of the recently discovered duplication glitch that allows players to infinitely duplicate any resource that can be fused with an arrow. It seems there’s still time to glitch your way to a fortune of rupees.

Rating: Everyone 10+

Best known for working on the publisher’s WWE and NBA games, Visual Concepts has found itself behind the wheel of 2K’s latest licensed experiment. Lego 2K Drive is a high-octane competitive racer full of destructible brick-y environments to crash through and a kid-friendly narrative full of fourth-wall-breaking fun.

The game’s best feature is Bricklandia, the playful Lego landscape in which 2K Drive is set. It’s a world begging to be dismantled by the brunt of your screeching tires and custom boat masts. Accelerating across the open-world playmat (that a human would never want to step on) is a thrilling experience, made better by the carefully animated auto-morphing ability. As you cross different terrain, from road to off-road and on water, players automatically switch between vehicles to fit the context.

The first performance of the Sonic Symphony World Tour will take place at the Barbican Hall in London, UK on September 16, 2023. The second performance will take place at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, CA on September 30, 2023. These are currently the only dates announced. A world tour was confirmed at the same time as this second performance, but these are the first dates announced since the show in Brazil.

Kujlevka's budget production values belie a clever first contact tale

1 year 1 month ago

Kujlevka is a strange, clever game about an ageing village bureaucrat already troubled by political upheaval and dreams about death and trauma, suddenly given responsibility for communicating with and controlling access to what appears to be humanity's first contact with an alien intelligence.

All those themes suggest a heavy, self-serious game. But Kujlevka's great strength is its levity. While not particularly funny, its consistent wry humour perfectly counterbalances all the talk of political chaos, existential futility, and petty greed. Its opening should have been a clue, really, considering you hang out with skeletons while drinking and commenting on the food on a train in outer space.

Reality Bytes: The Star Wars VRoliday Special

1 year 1 month ago

Of the various corporatised fictional universes out there, Star Wars is the one I'm most emotionally invested in. But my affection for George Lucas' brain-baby is less about the stories and characters, and more about the general vibe of the galaxy itself. I love its retro-futurist junkpunk style, the rusty spaceships, dusty planets, and fusty aliens. That's why I've more fondness for games like Dark Forces and KotOR than any of the films or TV shows, as they let me poke around locations like Tatooine and Ord Mantell at my own pace.

Hence, the idea of being properly, immerse in Star Wars, to be physically surrounded by it and able to touch it, is probably my ultimate VR fantasy. Sod the imaginatively inert virtual spaces of Horizon Worlds, if Mark Zuckerberg really wanted to sell the Metaverse to me, he'd build the whole thing out in Mos Eisely chic, and let me run my own virtual cantina selling NFT space-drinks to legless bounty hunters and idiot Web3 prospectors.

Amazon leaks Mortal Kombat 1's DLC characters and Kameo Fighters

1 year 1 month ago

Mortal Kombat 1 is finally official after several weeks of teases, but a few mysteries still remain. And it looks like Amazon might have inadvertently solved one of those ahead of schedule by leaking the characters included in the game's Kombat Pack DLC.

Mortal Kombat 1 - which, as rumoured, will be a reboot of sorts, taking place in a "reborn" universe created by the Fire God Liu Kang - is set to release on 19th September, and it'll be accompanied by a Kombat Pack providing early access to six additional playable characters and five assist characters known as Kameo Fighters.

At the time of Mortal Kombat 1's announcement, publisher Warner Bros. confirmed the Kombat Pack would be included in Mortal Kombat 1's Premium and Kollector's Editions, but neglected to tell prospective purchasers what additional characters they'd get in return for their money.

PSA: Here's How Many Korok Seeds Are in Tears of the Kingdom

1 year 1 month ago

In The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, truly ambitious collectors managed to find 900 Korok seeds hidden all across Hyrule. In Tears of the Kingdom, there are even more: 1000. And unfortunately, the reward for finding them all is just as disgusting as it was in the previous game.

Warning: Light spoilers for Hestu's quest and Korok collection follow. Read on at your own risk!

While there are a total of 1000 Korok Seeds in Tears of the Kingdom, you actually don't need to help 1000 Koroks. You only need to find a total of 800 hidden Koroks for 800 of the seeds, and the remaining 200 are gained from helping 100 pairs of Koroks reunite in the quests where you help them reach their friends. These quests give you two Korok Seeds apiece, for a grand total of 1000. So depending on how you look at it, Korok Seed collection is somewhat easier or harder than it was in Breath of the Wild.

Unfortunately, the reward for getting all 1000 isn't amazing. In Breath of the Wild, players received an item called "Hestu's Gift" that, frankly, looks like a large pile of golden poo that (per the description) "smells pretty bad."

In Tears of the Kingdom, you get...the exact same thing. Yup. For collecting 1000 small piles of Korok poo, you get one big poo to comemorate the occasion. Thanks, Hestu.

Completing the quest does mean you've upgraded your inventory fully though, and you can also speak to Hestu to watch him dance at any time. So, small victories.

Which The Legend of Zelda Game Do You Like Best?

Now that The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is here and we've spent some time with it, let's talk about the entries in the series we like best

We've gotten to spend quite a bit of time with The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdomnow that it's been around for a week. Granted, given it is a game that could take dozens or hundreds of hours to really master, we might not be sure how we feel about it. Not to mention so many other past installments have offered us all sorts of adventures over the year. So this week, we decided it might be a good idea for us all to share what we like best about some of our favorite The Legend of Zelda games.

One of the greatest things about the The Legend of Zelda series is that there is a game for everyone in it. For me, it also happens to be the first one I ever played as a kid. There can be a lot of darkness in Hyrule, but tempering that with a cap that lets me turn super teeny and see the world from a whole new perspective is pretty great. -- Jenni
