Hogwarts Legacy Datamine Reveals Morality System Where Unforgivable Curses Came With a Cost

1 year 1 month ago

Fans who noticed that Hogwarts Legacy had an unusual lack of repercussions for murdering and using other unforgivable curses will be pleased to hear that developer Avalanche Software also thought about it a lot.

As reported by PC Gamer, a new datamine of the popular Harry Potter game has revealed that a morality system was at least tested before launch, meaning using unforgivable curses wasn’t quite so free and easy.

YouTuber GrandTheftDiamonds uncovered a hidden morality system while looking through the game’s SQL files, and it would have given a House Point penalty to wizards who choose to use Avada Kedavra and the other unforgivable curses.

As you might expect, the Killing Curse would have racked up the worst penalties, removing 100 House Points from players. Casting Imperius would cost the player 50 points, while in-game actions such as extortion or bullying would have cost 50 and 25 points respectively.

Only a few actions awarded an increase , like studying in class adding ten or participating in a club which added five.

It’s not just a House Point deduction, either. Other consequences for your misdeeds include references to CrimeSceneInvestigations and CallAF (which GrandTheftDiamonds supposes stands for CallAuthorityFigure). Ultimately, however, the morality system was scrapped.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor Patch Notes Brings More Fixes to PC

1 year 1 month ago

Respawn’s latest patch for Star Wars Jedi: Survivor has arrived, bringing with it a slew of fixes and improvements to the PC version of the game. However, console players will need to wait a little longer to get their hands on the update.

As stated on EA's website, patch five is already available to download for PC, but the console patch that will bring upgrades to the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S has yet to be given a date.

Regardless, the new patch is set to bring numerous performance and stability improvements to Jedi: Survivor across all platforms, while also addressing a number of rare game breaking bugs that were preventing some players from progressing through the game.

A series of graphical updates are also being implemented in Patch Five that aim to fix instances wherein characters and enemies failed to appear correctly during gameplay and cutscenes.

Several fixes are also only coming to the PC version of the game, which was slated upon release for its substandard performance. Amongst these improvements is a content caching fixes designed to reduce hitching, and improved thread handling upon switching off the ray-tracing option.

Full details on all of the fixes brought in with Respawn’s latest patch can be found below.

Mortal Kombat 12 Revealed As Mortal Kombat 1

1 year 1 month ago

Warner Bros. Games and NetherRealm Studios have officially revealed that a rebooted Mortal Kombat 1 will arrive on September 19 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, Nintendo Switch, and PC

Following an earnings call tease earlier this year, Warner Bros. Discovery and NeatherRealm announced Mortal Kombat 1 officially on its website and released a reveal trailer (above).

"Mortal Kombat 1 is the latest title in the acclaimed Mortal Kombat videogame franchise developed by award-winning NetherRealm Studios," reads a post on the website.

"The game will introduce a reborn Mortal Kombat Universe that has been created by the Fire God Liu Kang, featuring reimagined versions of iconic characters."

"The game will introduce a reborn Mortal Kombat Universe that has been created by the Fire God Liu Kang, featuring reimagined versions of iconic characters as they’ve never been seen before, along with a new fighting system, game modes, bone krushing finishing moves, and more."

These characters so far include Liu Kang, Scorpion, Sub-Zero, Raiden, Kung Lao, Kitana, Mileena, Shang Tsung, Johnny Cage, and many more. NetherRealm has confirmed these characters to feature in a new Story Mode but is yet to reveal which other game modes will feature in Mortal Kombat 1.

Lords of the Fallen Arrives This October

1 year 1 month ago

Lords of the Fallen is coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, and PC on October 13 this year.

Revealed in a gameplay reveal trailer, (an exclusive, extended version of which can be viewed above), developer Hexworks has given fans a first proper look at the Dark Souls and Elden Ring-esque game running in Unreal Engine 5.

IGN's extended gameplay reveal trailer is a hefty four minutes and shares some story details too. "Mournstead has fallen, it's great army decimated by the legions of Adyr, the Demon God," reads a dramatic opening screen. "But one light still flickers in the ever-growing gloom, the light of the Dark Crusader."

The trailer then slips into gameplay, showing a range of environments and enemies present in the spiritual successor to 2014's Lords of the Fallen.

The follow-up was re-revealed at Gamescom 2022 after years of troubled development spread across several different studios. Originally introduced as a straight sequel called The Lords of the Fallen, the game went through a subtle (and slightly confusing) rebrand and is now being dubbed a spiritual successor to the original game of the same name.

In our 7/10 review of the original, IGN said: "Lords of the Fallen has fun combat and a good spin on Dark Souls' skill system, but its hero is overpowered."

Pokémon GO Developers Respond to Remote Raid Criticism, Announce Shadow Raids

1 year 1 month ago

Pokémon GO developer Niantic has responded to fan criticism over the changes made to remote raids in March while announcing a brand new feature called Shadow Raids.

Speaking to IGN, Pokémon GO producer John Funtanilla said Shadow Raids — a Team Rocket takeover of normal raids that let players catch Shadow Pokémon including Shadow Mewtwo — are a reinforced commitment of Niantic to get players outside similar to its changes to Remote Raids.

The developer announced in March that it would limit players to a maximum of five Remote Raids per day and also raise the price of Remote Raid Passes. The community criticised the decision for its impact on Pokémon GO's accessibility and boycotted the store, resulting in the game falling out of the top ten mobile gaming spending charts for the first time since April 2022 according to Circana (previously NPD).

A tough decision.

This decision wasn't easy for Niantic to make according to director of Pokémon GO live game Michael Steranka, who said the Remote Raid changes were made to stop players abusing the system and stepping away from the core message of going outside with friends.

"The changes that we made to Remote Raid Passes, this is an incredibly difficult decision to make and not one that we took lightly," said Steranka. "Personally speaking, I would wager to say that I used to do more remote raids than 99% [IGN] readers, that's something that was a deeply embedded in my daily gameplay in Pokémon GO.

Gears 5 Coming to GeForce Now as Part of Xbox's 10-Year Deal With Nvidia

1 year 1 month ago

After striking a deal with Microsoft earlier this year, Nvidia has officially announced the first slate of Xbox Game Studios titles coming to its cloud gaming service GeForce Now.

In a press release, Nvidia confirmed that The Coalition's Gears 5 will be the first first-party game from Xbox Game Studios to be playable on GeForce Now. GeForce Now players subscribed to the Priority tier can stream Gears 5 at 1080p and 60FPS, with Ultimate members having the option to stream it at 4K resolution at 120FPS or 240FPS for lower latency.

Additionally, Nvidia confirmed the next three games coming from the Xbox Game Studios portfolio: Arkane Lyon's Deathloop, plus Grounded and Pentiment from Obsidian Entertainment, will arrive on GeForce Now on May 25, with more PC games from Xbox being added "regularly" to the service.

The announcement is part of a 10-year agreement between Nvidia in Microsoft that was inked last February, where Microsoft pledged to bring all of its PC games to GeForce Now. Microsoft struck a deal with Nvidia, hoping to resolve any concerns Nvidia may have had with Microsoft acquiring Activision Blizzard.

The Outlast Trials Early Access Review

1 year 1 month ago

The Outlast Trials is a horror movie in reverse, in ways both good and bad. Instead of screaming in terror when something jumps out at you or stabs your character in the face, you usually just laugh as your friends make fun of you from their hiding spots. Instead of a clueless group of protagonists who get picked off one by one, the enemies hunting you and your teammates are the ones with the hilariously poor decision-making skills. While the early access version of this cooperative horror game proves the concept and has a couple of very memorable maps, it’s not one of those games that’s sprung into being almost fully formed. Expected bugs and general lack of polish aside, there’s just not much content yet. Even so, I had an overall good time with this silly, gory, and uneven slaughterfest even in these early stages.

The Outlast Trials throws you and up to four of your friends into insane and improbable Saw-like “death games” in which you must work together to overcome the gory terrors that await. What little story there is so far doesn’t amount to much: you’re abducted by an evil corporation and kept in a prison under the guise of rehabilitation, but instead are subjected to a seemingly random series of murder playgrounds. You can glean some mildly interesting bits of lore by collecting compromising evidence that immoral company men apparently left lying around its death courses, but it’s not exactly mesmerizing stuff. And that’s okay! You’re playing The Outlast Trials because you want to see a crazy lady use a sock puppet to drill a guy’s face off, and there’s certainly an abundance of that.

The Case Of The Golden Idol Brings Its Alluring Mystery To Switch Next Week

1 year 1 month ago

The Case of the Golden Idol Switch

The Case of the Golden Idol was one of 2022’s best hidden gems that only PC players have been able to enjoy. Fortunately, Switch owners can put on their thinking hats when the dark mystery game heads to the platform next week.

On May 25, The Case of the Golden Idol lands on Switch alongside its recently released expansion, The Spider of Lanka. Both titles can be purchased separately or together in a bundle. The award-winning game takes place in the 18th century and tasks you with solving a mystery spanning decades over 11 bizarre, interconnected deaths. Each scenario is presented as static scenes where players must carefully observe the environment to find clues revealing who each character is, how the person died, and the chronological order of events. The Spider of Lanka serves as a prequel that adds three additional cases.

The Switch version sports a redesigned UI to better accommodate a controller-based experience. If this is the first you've heard of the game, the trailer below provides a good idea of what to expect.

As a fan of The Case of the Golden Idol, it's great to see it come to more platforms, and Switch should be an especially good fit. Will you be giving the game a shot on Switch? Let us know in the comments!

Lords Of The Fallen Is Coming This October On Friday The 13th

1 year 1 month ago

The Lords of the Fallen release date

Lords of the Fallen is coming this October, and despite the good news it lands on the unluckiest day of the year. Thankfully, a lengthy trailer gives us the good fortune of enjoying some action-packed gameplay footage.

This reimagining/reboot of its 2014 predecessor is coming on Friday, October 13. A big new trailer set to Iron Maiden packs in a ton of metal-infused action that shows off the game's Unreal Engine 5-rendered graphics.

It's been a long road for Lords of the Fallen, which began life as Lords of the Fallen 2 years ago before development restarted from scratch. It was re-announced as The Lords of the Fallen last year before reverting back to its original name. The Souls-inspired game's open world is five times larger than the original's and supports online co-op. The combat has also been retuned to be faster and more fluid, and developer Hexworks promises the game to be an overall expansive action RPG experience.

We're looking forward to seeing the result of this overhaul when the game comes to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.

Watch Clive Fight a Morbol in Final Fantasy XVI

Watch Clive Fight a Morbol in Final Fantasy XVI

Square Enix regularly shares clips from Final Fantasy XVI showcasing gameplay, and the latest features Clive facing a Morbol and a Knight of the Blinding Dawn. These latest segments seem to show his period of life when he was acting as the First Shield of Rosaria. As he wasn’t the Dominant of Phoenix, he took on that role to support and protect his brother Joshua. While the Knight of the Blinding Dawn is a new foe, the Morbol is a recurring Final Fantasy enemy that also shows up in titles under the name Malboro.

We start by seeing Clive face the Morbol in Final Fantasy XVI. He doesn’t have any Eikons yet, so he’s using only skills available to him. On the left, we can see he has four Potions and three High Potions for healing, as well as a Stoneskin Tonic. (In past Final Fantasy games, Stoneskin can increase defense.) He also has access to an attack, a fire spell, a Phoenix Shift, and a jump. When the Knight of the Blinding Dawn fight begins, we can see that holding R2 changes the Attack option to the Rising Flames ability, which Clive uses as the video draws to a close.

Xbox discusses offering "timed slices" and games with ads on PC and console

Xbox has discusssed "timed slices" and games with ads internally, to offer different monetisation methods to developers.

"We talk a lot about Game Pass because subscription is the latest option that we scaled: you have pay-to-play, then there was free-to-play, and then we introduced Game Pass," Sarah Bond, corporate vice president for game creator experience and ecosystem at Xbox, told Rolling Stone UK.

"We've talked about how we're experimenting with other models, like what does it mean for advertising in games which is more prevalent in mobile – are there models of that that work well in PC and console? Are there other models where you might have timed slices of games and stuff like that?

Nvidia announces RTX 4060 Ti graphics cards in both 8GB and 16GB varieties, plus an 8GB RTX 4060

1 year 1 month ago

Nvidia has officially unveiled its first mid-range Ada Lovelace graphics card, the RTX 4060 Ti, with both 8GB and 16GB variants at $399/£389 and $499 respectively. The 8GB card is the first to be released, with sales beginning on May 24th, while the 16GB variant debuts in July. The firm also detailed its mainstream RTX 4060 GPU, also coming in July, to debut at $299.

All three models ought to offer a reasonable boost in performance over their predecessors, while also adding DLSS 3 frame generation - which is perhaps more impactful on mid-range hardware than it is on the likes of the RTX 4090 which is powerful enough without it. That should allow the 4060 family to be a reasonable choice for gaming at 1080p with maxed settings (including RT / DLSS), or at 1440p with some settings reductions.

On average, Nvidia is claiming the 4060 Ti is 1.15x faster than the 3060 Ti and 1.6x faster than the 2060 Super (1.7x and 2.6x faster with DLSS 3). Similarly, the RTX 4060 is 1.2x faster than RTX 3060 and 1.6x faster than RTX 2060 (1.7x and 2.3x with DLSS 3).

A $300 Million Series That Frustrated Critics Is Winning Audiences and Number One Spots on Streaming

1 year 1 month ago

Prime Video’s new blockbuster series Citadel might be leaving critics feeling cold, but the show is a verified success with audiences. Amazon’s streaming platform is reported to have pumped $300 million into the series in an effort to entice new users onto the service and develop a new mega-franchise.

Despite a Rotten Tomatoes rating of just 53% from critics, the costly spy drama has hit the number one spot in 91 different countries this week, according to Flix Patrol. The show is also enjoying a much better Audience Score of 70%, with an average of 3.8 out of 5 stars from over 500 audience reviews.

Citadel is currently catching flack from critics due to some awkward dialogue and a slightly wooden performance from Richard Madden, whom folks may know as Robb Stark from Game of Thrones, but he should really be a household name due to his fantastic turn in Jed Mercurio’s Bodyguard for the BBC. Priyanka Chopra Jonas, who stars opposite Madden as another deadly spy, also seems to be a bit burdened by the clunky dialogue. Both play secret agents who have had their memories erased, a somewhat tiresome trope that was already getting tired with the second Bourne movie.

Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Has a Pretty Simple Duplication Glitch

1 year 1 month ago

All the new mechanics in Tears of the Kingdom create some pretty great synergies. However, there can be some unintended side effects. In this case, that takes the form of a pretty easy duplication glitch that can be done absolutely anywhere. All you need to start is two bows and at least one of the items you want to duplicate.

This doesn’t quite lead to an exponential increase, as each time you do it, you will only be getting one more of whatever item you use. Keep in mind you can only duplicate items that can be attached to an arrow. Sadly, you cannot duplicate the Light of Blessings.

How to Do the Tears of the Kingdom Duplication Glitch

It’s a very quick process, and there are only a handful of steps to it.

While aiming your bow, attach the item you will be duplicating using up d-pad. Lower the bow so you aren’t still aiming it, but have it ready.

PlayStation Showcase Officially Locked In for Next Week

1 year 1 month ago

After quite a bit of speculation following the official cancellation of E3 2023, PlayStation has finally announced its own Showcase. Fans don’t have all that long to wait, either. The PlayStation Showcase will be broadcast in a week on Wednesday, May 24, at 1 PM PT/4 PM ET. While it’s not explicitly stated, it will likely be hosted on both the PlayStation YouTube and Twitch channels.

The announcement doesn’t share or even tease what games will make an appearance. Even with that, it is almost a given that we will see Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, considering it releases this fall. As for other big upcoming exclusives, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth is headed to the console this winter. We might also see more for Marvel’s Wolverine, though that’s not guaranteed.

A Pop Diva’s Surprising Turn as an Action Star Is Dominating Netflix in 79 Countries

1 year 1 month ago

In a surprising turn for the noted vocalist, Jennifer Lopez has scored a massive success on Netflix by playing a deadly assassin. The star, who is arguably more associated with romance than violence, has seized the top of the Netflix charts in 79 countries with her new action film, and it doesn’t seem like she’ll let go any time soon.

In The Mother, Lopez takes on the role of a deadly assassin who is dragged back into her violent past as she attempts to unravel the complicated areas where her life and deadly career intersect. Directed by Niki Caro, who helmed the recent live-action Mulan, and written by Lovecraft Country showrunner Misha Green, the film does an admirable job of taking the traditional story of a very dangerous man whose family is in trouble and turning it slightly on its head. According to FlixPatrol, audiences seem to be enjoying it, too, as the film rapidly dominated the Netflix charts and shows no signs of moving.

It’s Official: Tears of the Kingdom Is Now the Fastest-Selling Game in the Zelda Franchise

Previous instalments in The Legend of Zelda series, like Breath of the Wild, have undoubtedly set a very high bar in terms of critical reception and sales figures. While Tears of the Kingdom has certainly lived up to the former, it’s now surpassed BOTW and set a new bar in terms of sales for the entire Zelda series.

The news was confirmed by Nintendo on May 17, who revealed that Tears of the Kingdom sold more than 10 million copies in its first three days on the market. That means it becomes “the fastest-selling game in the history of The Legend of Zelda series.”

Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Has Turned Me Into a Bona Fide Korok Abuser

1 year 1 month ago

One of the simple, yet oft overlooked, pleasures of Breath of the Wild was the tiny squeak the adorable little Koroks would let out whenever you struck them with something. It could be an arrow shot, a slash, or the good ol’ “rock falls on head” fallback. To me –clearly a very mature and well-adjusted adult human being– there was nothing cuter than the hapless yelp of the Koroks.

With the release of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, it’s as if Nintendo has finally answered my prayers for a true sandbox game that would allow me to do whatever my sinister heart desired to these little critters. Tears of the Kingdom? More like Torture of the Koroks.

It all started early on in my TOTK adventure, when I encountered my first Korok on the Great Sky Island. “Ah, an old friend!” I thought, “How I’ve missed randomly swinging my sword at you and just watching you take the abuse.” Armed with only a measly little tree branch at the time, I swung at the Korok for a few seconds, enjoyed the dulcet tones of its screams of agony, and chuckled to myself before finally letting the poor thing go.

The abuse picked up a little later on, when I lifted a rock to find one of my bean-sized brethren lying in wait. I collected my reward, dropped the oversized rock on its head, and moved on.

And then again! When I saw a suspicious bag hanging in the crook of a tree in Central Hyrule. I discovered yet another Korok, then proceeded to fire all 30 arrows in my possession at it. Just because.

Overwatch 2’s Big PvE Mode Plans Have Been Scrapped, Will Focus On Smaller Standalone Missions Instead

1 year 1 month ago

Overwatch 2 has created a massive upset within the player base with the recent roadmap update and discussion regarding the game’s future. During this time, it was revealed by the devs that the highly-anticipated PVE mode wouldn’t be going ahead in the same way that they had previously announced to players before the launch of Overwatch 2.

Naturally, this caused a lot of upset among fans who have desperately been holding out for the promise of this PvE story-based game mode for years. The original vision for Overwatch 2 PvE announced back in 2019 featured mechanics such as skill trees, where you could spend points to unlock and enhance skills for each hero, and that the PvE would be a standalone story mode alternative to Overwatch.

As of today, the devs have confirmed that this is no longer the case and that they cannot deliver on this to such a scale. PvE will instead be small standalone missions or stories that are dropped with the Seasonal update in Overwatch 2’s live service content. This content is planned to include limited-time game modes, co-op missions, story-based events, and hero mastery missions.

Popular Overwatch 2 content creator, streamer, and educational Support player, KarQ took to Twitter to share his disappointment with the whole situation, despite having an understanding view of the decision-making that has occurred. Many fans quickly jumped on this post and spread numerous comments showing their frustration and disbelief toward Activision Blizzard and the Overwatch team. Take a look for yourself below:

Marvel Snap’s Card Acquisition System Is About to Get a Lot Better

1 year 1 month ago

The card acquisition process has been Marvel Snap‘s weakest point since the beta days. Progressing through the Collection track was arduous and oftentimes disheartening, and ever since the introduction of Series 4 and 5, things have only gotten worse.

Alongside the new patch release today, however, Second Dinner also announced that they’d be making some key changes to how card acquisition works in Marvel Snap. Most notably, they’re planning on adopting a more flexible card release format, where not all new cards have to be released as Series 5 drops. Going forward in June, the team will be experimenting with releasing some cards directly in Series 4, while also being flexible with Series drops as well, where some cards may drop directly to Series 3 from Series 5.

This should help alleviate the major concerns that fans have long had with Marvel Snap’s collection system. In addition to that, Second Dinner also stated that they’d be introducing more ways to help players accrue Tokens, making it easier for everyone to save up for the cards they want.

As for this week’s patch itself, it’s a pretty major shakeup. First off, Kitty Pryde is back and has been given out to all active accounts for free. Wave has been nerfed pretty heavily and no longer interacts well with She-Hulk and Death, dealing a huge blow to the Deathwave archetype. Here are the balance changes:

There’s a Way to Repair Your Weapons in Tears of the Kingdom, But It’s the Last Thing You’d Expect

1 year 1 month ago

In a game that’s receiving numerous perfect scores and even more nearly perfect ones, one point of contention is still weapon degradation. Just like in Breath of the Wild, using a weapon multiple times will slowly make it break down to the point where it shatters. There are multiple ways to improve the state of used weapons, but someone just found one of the wildest ways to get it done.

If you’ve played Breath of the Wild, then chances are that you know letting an Octorok suck in a rusted weapon will clean it up and give you an even more powerful version of the item to use in battle. This still works, but there’s a brand-new feature in Tears of the Kingdom that makes this Octorok method possibly the best method for repairing weapons.

As @TristanACooper shows in his tweet, Octoroks will now repair damaged weapons when they swallow them, spitting out a fully repaired weapon. On top of that, the weapon will also get a small stat buff that absolutely makes this one of the best mechanics in the game for prolonging weapon usage.

The Master Ball is Finally Coming to Pokemon GO

1 year 1 month ago

It has been rumored for a while now among the game’s community and found in datamines, but the Master Ball is finally coming to Pokemon GO. In a post released by Niantic’s Pokemon GO Team, it was revealed that the Master Ball will be released as a reward for finishing the final part of the Season 10: Rising Heroes Special Research.

This is the season-long special research that began on Mar. 1 and has been receiving updates throughout the three-month-long period of Season 10. The final part of the story will begin in less than one week on May 22, 2023 at 10 AM local time. The post indicates that on this date WIllow will return with some news on Team GO Rocket as well as “a gift” which is likely the Master Ball you’ll receive upon completing the Special Research.

For those who are unfamiliar with the Master Ball, this is the ultimate Poke Ball that no Pokemon can break out of and it never misses. It’ll be interesting to see how this item is implemented when catching in Pokemon GO.

Season 10: Rising Heroes ends on June 1, 2023, but players won’t need to have the Special Research completed by that date to receive the Master Ball. As long as a trainer logs into the game between May 22, 2023, and June 1, 2023, then they’ll be able to claim the final part of the Special Research. At that point, it can be completed at any time to get a Master Ball.

As of right now, there are no announced events or Special Research stories where trainers will be able to get additional Master Balls in the future. However, the post said to keep an eye out for announcements about future opportunities to get Master Balls.

Tears of the Kingdom Player Skydives Without a Paraglider and Lands in Epic Style

1 year 1 month ago

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is brimming with ways to explore its many regions and environments, often requiring players to take control of a glider as they explore their location. Because many of these locations are suspended so far above the ground, there’s always the risk of falling off the edge and plummeting to an untimely death.

However, one player has found an incredible way to bypass fall damage, surviving a monumental skydive with no paraglider. In the words of Toy Story’s Woody, it’s falling with style in the absolute extreme.

Shared to Reddit by one player, they explained that they hadn’t yet unlocked the paraglider so had to hope their ‘Minecraft physics’ would work in Tears of the Kingdom.

Dropping from the Central Hyrule Sky Archipelago, their Link was plummeting to a near certain respawn as a result. Their saving grace, though, was a horse. The player landed on the trusty steed and, despite falling from an incredible height, ‘Minecraft physics’ saw them land with little impact and carry on as if nothing had happened.
