Star Wars Jedi: Survivor Players Are Recreating the Franchise's Most Iconic Lightsabers

1 year 1 month ago

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor players are using the game's immense level of lightsaber customisation to recreate some of the franchise's most iconic (and sometimes niche) laser swords.

The long-awaited sequel from EA aimed to double down on everything Jedi: Fallen Order did right, and as revealed by game director Stig Asmussen at Star Wars Celebration 2023, customisation was to be one of Jedi: Survivor's main pillars.

Beyond just different colour schemes for Cal's ship, droid, and poncho, players could now customise everything from his moustache to his boots and, of course, his lightsaber. While most players used the ridiculous number of lightsaber components and colours to create a blade that suited them, some leaned back into the depths of Star Wars lore to recreate their favourite characters' signature weapons.

SwanyPlaysGames on YouTube created an entire video showcasing their ideas, for example, which included a faithful recreation of Darth Vader's blade.

Lord of the Rings Online Isn't Going Anywhere Despite Amazon Launching Their Own MMO

1 year 1 month ago

Amazon’s Lord of the Rings MMO isn’t scaring off The Lord of the Rings Online. Developers from the long running MMO have held strong against the announcement of a competitor.

“[Lord of the Rings Online] is not going away", confirmed developer Standing Stone in a forum post. “LOTRO is like the long-lived Ents, Elves and Dwarves; and we mere mortals, are the stewards of LOTRO and its community. Standing Stone has every intention of growing and supporting this community. The road goes ever on...”

The Lord of the Rings Online launched way back in 2007 and has developed a stalwart following. Now, a new MMO is coming from Amazon – and while it’s still in the early stages of development, it promises to give players a fresh look at Middle-Earth.

“Bringing players a fresh take on The Lord of the Rings has long been an aspiration for our team, and we’re honored and grateful that Middle-earth Enterprises is entrusting us with this iconic world,” said Amazon Games vice president, Christoph Hartmann.

Hartmann also name-checks the 17-year-old Lord of the Rings Online, saying that it was “not a bad game” but that the new MMO will be “worlds apart” from its predecessor. He also confirmed that this is a completely new concept – not a continuation of its earlier Lord of the Rings game that was canceled back in 2021.

Starfield Feels like Xbox's Last Chance at Redemption

1 year 1 month ago

It’s no secret the gaming community is kind of angry at Xbox since Redfall released. It really felt like the straw that broke the camel’s back. For too long Xbox fans have been asked to wait just a little bit longer for the next amazing AAA game, but enough is enough. Redfall was supposed to be that game, and look how that turned out. Now, with Redfall in the rearview mirror (aka the “Uninstalled” bin for most of us), it’s time to look forward to the next big release – Starfield.

If Starfield is a flop or suffers from any kind of major problem – or, y’know, is just not that fun – faith in Xbox’s ability to deliver is going to be further shaken and as a result I imagine heads will roll at Xbox.

Starfield doesn’t deserve this added pressure but it will be the first full-price game that has a chance to change minds about what Xbox is capable of. Initially, in 2021, it felt like Xbox had hit its stride with a great campaign for Halo Infinite, and Game of the Year-winning Forza Horizon 5. But it took almost another year for promised features such as campaign co-op and forge to be added to Halo’s multiplayer, and that’s after Infinite’s release was delayed a year in the first place. It brought Xbox’s competence to the forefront, especially as Phil Spencer himself said “If we lose our way with Halo, we lose our way with Xbox.” So why did exactly that happen with Xbox’s biggest franchise?

Xbox fans are still longing for a meaty AAA experience exclusive to the Xbox ecosystem. Thanks a lot, Redfall.

Forza Horizon 5 was a gem in the Xbox library, receiving industry-wide praise and finally putting Xbox on the right path when it came to big content releases. It capped off 2021 perfectly, but when 2022 rolled around… nothing.

The Rally Point: Songs Of Syx works at every scale by encouraging natural growth

1 year 1 month ago

It's difficult not to start out by namedropping Dwarf Fortress. Songs Of Syx will compare to probably every colony sim you've played, in fact, but it feels like a fundamentally different game conceptually.

The usual parts are there. Chop some trees, chip some stones, and chep some crops to get your pioneers' basic needs met, then get to expanding. But Syx isn't interested in testing you or manufacturing drama. It's not about surviving, not about building a happy little colony. It's about how growth changes not just the scale, but the nature of a settlement. Despite similarities with its influences, it defines itself with a different dynamic, a whole different ethos to its peers. And it's one that even playing it my own awkward way hasn't broken.

The Electronic Wireless Show podcast S2 Episode 16: a Zelda episode as a naked play for your attention

1 year 1 month ago

The Electronic Wireless Show is not bound by your mortal rules, which is why even though this is a PC gaming podcast we're going to talk about Zelda, dammit all, because everyone else gets to talk about Tears Of The Kingdom and we're just as cool as them. We (attempt to) talk about our favourite Zelda games of the past, our favourite Zelda-likes on PC, and I explain how Tears Of The Kingdom works to Nate and James. Honestly though, we don't make it very far, because it turns out the lads haven't ever played a Zelda game before. At least, Nate might have. We're not entirely sure.

We do also talk about what we've been playing this week as well - which include some old favourites, some new secrets, and Gaben's tiny hands - and give some great new recommendations. Nate also delivers a very involved mini-game involving beans and aliens, and James doesn't talk about the Asus ROG Ally.

New Details About the Splatoon 3 Painbrush Weapon Revealed

1 year 1 month ago

Splatoon 3 - Painbrush

Nintendo revealed more details about the new Painbrush weapon coming to Splatoon 3. From what can be seen, this fan brush weapon appears to spread ink in wide areas at the cost of big amounts of ink. It was announced as part of the Sizzle Season 2023, along with a blaster reminiscent of the classic Super Scope peripheral for the SNES.

Take a look at a preview of how the Painbrush works from the official Splatoon Twitter account below.
https://twitter.com/SplatoonNA/status/1659182285785030656?s=20

The appearance of the new Painbrush in Splatoon 3 is meant to resemble a fan brush, while its handle looks like a palette cup. As you can see in the video, attacks with this brush will always start with a slow initial swing which are followed by much faster ones. Moreover, just like other brush weapons, you can run holding the brush against the floor by pressing ZR.

Unlike previous brush weapons, this variation is designed for a longer range at the cost of a slower start-up. More importantly, the preview also shows that you can splat enemies with just about two direct hits. However, these attacks seem to be quite draining when it comes to ink usage, as the ink-tank reserve reduces swiftly with each strike.

As for the add-ons, the Painbrush will come equipped with a Curling Bomb as the sub-weapon and a Wave Breaker for the special. This makes for a playstyle more focused on fast, head-on movement with the long narrow strokes and the paths left by the Curling Bomb.

New Street Fighter 6 How to Play Videos Focus on Juri and Guile

New Street Fighter 6 How to Play Videos Focus on Juri and Guile

Capcom continued its run of Street Fighter 6 videos going over how to play certain characters by looking at returning fighters Guile and Juri. The former is another one of the easier-to-play characters in the game. Meanwhile, Juri can take a bit more time to learn, as she’s a kind of fighter we could use to apply pressure in matches and quickly dash in for combos and attacks.

The Guile Street Fighter 6 How to Play video appeared first. It initially begins by showing how balanced he is, with moves for multiple ranges, It also shows how even his standard punches and kicks have quite a bit of reach to them. It ends by focusing on his Sonic Boom, a returning projectile.

For the Juri Street Fighter 6 video going over how to play as the character, it shows how someone would want to use her kicks to create combos and keep moving forward. Her attack getting extra attention is Tensenrin, and it shows how the kick could be used on the ground or as an anti-air option.

Clean your Bikini Bottom in PowerWash Simulator's SpongeBob crossover

PowerWash Simulator is about to get a whole lot wetter as the wonderful hose-'em-up heads to the depths of the ocean as part of a new SpongeBob crossover DLC, arriving this "summer".

Details on PowerWash Simulator's SpongeBob SquarePants Special Pack are slim at present, but a teaser video announcing the crossover does offer a glimpse of a player taking in the sights of an unusually mucky Bikini Bottom, nozzle in hand.

Although PowerWash Simulator has recieved a couple of free crossovers previously - whisking players to Tomb Raider's Croft Manor and Final Fantasy 7's Midgar - SpongeBob will be the first in a series of paid Special Pack DLC crossovers, which were announced as part of developer FuturLab's 2023 content roadmap back in April.

Surgeon Simulator, I Am Bread Developer Announces Next Game: Lost Skies

1 year 1 month ago

Bossa Games, developer of I Am Bread, I Am Fish, and Surgeon Simulator, has announced its next game. It’s called Lost Skies, and in many ways, it’s a significant departure from Bossa’s previous humorous sandbox efforts.

Lost Skies is an upcoming open-world, co-op adventure where up to six players work together to explore a world composed of floating islands, build flying ships, and take on gigantic monsters. It’s planned for a PC launch in 2024, but will enter what Bossa calls “open development” later this year, allowing the community to access and test vertical slices and offer feedback to shape Lost Skies’ development.

Expecting the Unexpected

According to Bossa Games CEO Henrique Olifiers, Lost Skies is able to be played single player as well as co-op, and single player play is in fact incentivized at times to assist the overall cooperative efforts of a group. He tells us that combat includes two components. One is “ground” combat, where “ground” is used a bit loosely because, per Olifiers, everyone will be hook-shotting around “Spider-Man-style” in very vertical spaces. The other is ship combat, with customizable flying ships built to tackle much larger creatures that serve as both enemies and puzzles.

Hawken Reborn is a bland singleplayer mech FPS built on a hostile free-to-play model

1 year 1 month ago

A sequel to Hawken was certainly not on my 2023 bingo card. Five years after the multiplayer mech FPS shut down on PC, now requiring a fan-made fix even just to play offline against bots, I didn't expect to ever again dash around its cool sci-fi cityscapes as a charmingly scrappy little stomper. So I was excited when publishers 505 Games announced singleplayer follow-up Hawken Reborn on Monday then launched it into early access two days later. Having now played it, oh dear. You know, it's okay for the dead to stay dead.

Sword Art Online Integral Factor Heading to PC via Steam

1 year 1 month ago

Sword Art Online Integral Factor is coming to PC

The multiplayer, online, free-to-play game Sword Art Online: Integral Factor is finally coming to the PC via Steam. Although there is no release date set for now, the Steam page is already live. Until now, the game has only been available on mobile devices.

The Steam page currently features a teaser video showcasing some of the characters you can find throughout the story, along with some screenshots. As you can see, the pictures still show the interface from the mobile version, with the attack and skill buttons showing on the screen. Moreover, the page shows that the game will be available with English, Traditional Chinese, Japanese, and Korean subtitles and interface options. However, the audio is listed only in Japanese.

Developed by Asobimo and published by Bandai Namco, Sword Art Online: Integral Factor released originally for mobile devices in 2017. It presented a retelling of the original series story where the players can affect the outcome. Just like in the anime’s first season, the player appears as a beta tester trapped in the virtual world of Aincrad just after the truth about dying in-game was revealed.

First Honkai: Star Rail Event is Boulder Town: Super League

1 year 1 month ago

star rail super league

The first event in Honkai: Star Rail will take place in Boulder Town from May 19, 2023 until June 6, 2023. Boulder Town: Super League will give rewards such as Stellar Jades, Condensed Aethers, and Travelers’ Guides. The Super League will still be available after the event ends, but players will only be able to obtain first-clear rewards and not the time-limited event ones.

In order to participate in the Super League, we must be at Trailblaze Level 21 at the minimum. As well, we must complete the "Ring and Stage I," "Ring and Stage II," and "Gladiator" Adventure Missions. Basically, you need to more or less fully clear the events for Boulder Town’s Fight Club. During Super League in Honkai: Star Rail, the player undergoes five matches which consist of four matches each. The enemy line-up will be random and when you defeat them, you will gain a buff. The event version of Super League will have a timer, and you get more rewards the faster you clear the rounds.

As of the time of writing, Honkai: Star Rail is in the latter half of its launch version 1.0. The Fight Club existed in the first half though, and it played a small part in the Jarilo-VI storyline. You could also visit it as part of the Adventure Missions and fight against enemies. It’s unclear if the Super League will have its own event story or if it will pick up an existing plot thread.

Bayonetta 3 Demon Slave System Was Conceived Before the Game

1 year 1 month ago

Bayonetta 3 Dev Diary

PlatinumGames released the first of a new development diary series for Bayonetta 3. In this initial episode, Series Creator Hideki Kamiya, Director Yusuke Miyata, Producer Yuji Naoko and Animator Takaaki Yamaguchi reflected on the Demon Slave mechanic and the importance of dancing to Bayonetta's character.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9w3axyTHbbk

In the development diary, the team first discussed the Demon Slave mechanic. According to Kamiya, the mechanic was devised before Bayonetta 3. He felt it was a good match for Bayonetta and revised it for the new game. Miyata envisioned the concept like a dolphin show, with Bayonetta as the trainer. He also fought with Kamiya over how many demons they were going to be. Kamiya wanted to keep it at five, but Miyata kept revising the number upwards, and won in the end.

Miyata also talked about getting to the essence of who Bayonetta is when designing the game. After asking around the team, the keyword “dancing” came up a lot, and he decided to implement this heavily into her moveset. Both Miyata and Yamaguchi discussed the difficulties they faced trying to incorporate dance moves into combat. Initially Bayonetta felt too light and combat didn’t feel impactful enough, so they had to keep tweaking it.

Sonic Prime's second batch of episodes comes to Netflix in July

1 year 1 month ago

If you've been gripped to your seat in agonised anticipation since blasting through the first eight episodes of Sonic Prime back in December, you'll no doubt be thrilled to hear the next lot is coming to Netflix on 13th July.

When Sonic Prime was announced back in February 2021, Netflix described it as a 24-episode animated series that would send Sonic on a "journey of self-discovery and redemption" in which the "fate of a strange new multiverse" was in his hands.

Sonic Prime's initial batch of episodes saw Sonic traversing the Shatterverse - a collection of alternative dimensions formed after Dr. Eggman's Paradox Prism was destroyed in battle - in a quest to restore the universe, all with a little help from different versions of his familiar friends.

Annapurna's recursive puzzle adventure Maquette comes to Switch next week

1 year 1 month ago

Maquette, the striking "recursive" first-person puzzle adventure from developer Graceful Decay and publisher Annapurna Interactive, is making its way to Switch next week, on 25th May.

Originally released for PlayStation and PC back in 2021, Maquette builds an ingenious series of spatial challenges inspired by the small-scale sculptors' models that give the game its name.

Maquettes are sculptures crafted before embarking on a full-scale project, and in Graceful Decay's puzzler, that's reflected in environments that contain smaller versions of themselves. Crucially in Maquette, changes made to one environment affect the other - so if you were to, say, place a cube in a tiny courtyard in front of you, it would then materialise in the full-size courtyard you stand in, giving you a means to progress to the next area - and on it goes.

Here’s Why We Didn’t Get a Steins;Gate Live-Action Show

1 year 1 month ago

steins;gate live-action

Chiyomaru Shikura, formerly the chairman and executive director of Mages, shared some information of what could have been regarding a live-action adaptation of Steins;Gate. Apparently, there had been talks of a live-action show after the anime for the game ended. The deal ended up falling through due to disagreements over the main actor. [Thanks, Famitsu!]

Shikura had been very optimistic about the live-action show, because the producer who would have handled it was someone whose work he admired. He did not name the producer or the studio that would have worked on the live-action Steins;Gate adaptation. During discussions though, the studio stated that it wanted a Johnny’s actor to play protagonist Rintaro Okabe. Shikura joked that single request caused a divergence in the timeline.

New Lords of the Fallen Trailer Looks Super Promising; Makes Us Yearn for a Bloodborne Sequel

1 year 1 month ago

It’s been 9 years since the first Lords of the Fallen dropped a unique take on the Soulsborne genre. While you could still lose your accumulated XP, you could also bank it for later (something repeated in the developer’s The Surge titles). This year will finally mark the release of the sequel, first revealed in August 2022.

With the game set for an October release date, we have finally gotten a first look at gameplay. The trailer shows off a sequel that honestly looks quite a bit different than what the original offered, for the better. It’s moody and atmospheric to the point that we couldn’t help but think of another gothic Souls game.

One of the first noticeable models from the club is Froggodile’s transportation truck, a vehicle that makes it easier to transfer your building materials.

You can expect a few trial-and-error designs like SchmittFace’s wonky bipedal walker that fell apart in less than a minute. But, of course, it wouldn’t be an engineering club without the experimentation side of it, as fans test out the Zonai items found across Hyrule.
