Star-Studded God of War Ragnarok Trailer Has Ben Stiller, John Travolta, & LeBron James Deal With Dad Problems

1 year 6 months ago

Today Sony released a brand-new trailer of God of War Ragnarok, and it’s full of stars.

Specifically, we get to see actors Ben Stiller and John Travolta, and basketball player LeBron James as they gather in a parent support group with their children.

Of course, it’s all about God of War Ragnarok. Ben Stiller is also wearing a Kratos costume, which adds value to the whole thing.

The father-son dynamic was extremely important in the original God of War, so I’d be surprised if it wasn’t the same in God of War Ragnarok, and it’s pretty hilarious to see this trailer joke around about it.

It’s definitely funny, but I won’t spoil it any more. You can check it out for yourself below.

The press release also includes comment from each of the stars mentioned above.

Ben Stiller: “Putting on the Kratos beard and makeup felt very empowering. The war paint really is useful in terms of letting people know you mean business. I found the beard made me feel wiser…though [my son] Quin didn’t seem to feel that at all.”

LeBron James: “Something about having the Leviathan Axe in your hand transports you to a different world. We all play the games on the screen, but being able to bring those moments to life and connect in a different way is a pretty cool thing.”

Last weekend, a man in San Francisco went into the home of US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi with a hammer and attacked her husband Paul Pelosi while shouting, "Where's Nancy?"

According to The Independent, the suspect in the attack, David DePape, had been active on social media, sharing conspiracy theories about COVID-19, alleging the 2020 US presidential election had been stolen, and subscribing to QAnon beliefs and Holocaust denialism.

A post DePape made in August explained what radicalized him and started him down the rabbit hole of conspiracy theories.

Despite saying differently on both the front and back of the game's box, it sounds like owners of Vampire: The Masquerade - Swansong's PS4 version won't actually get their promised free PS5 upgrade.

A post on Reddit detailing a message from Nacon's customer support claims the publisher made an error advertising the upgrade.

"We inform you that the developers confirm that if you bought the version of the video game for PS4 it is not possible to update the video game for the PS5 version," Nacon explained in a reply to one owner of a PS4 version of the game.

Ben Stiller, John Travolta, and LeBron James Star in God of War Ragnarok Commercial

Ben Stiller, John Travolta, and LeBron James Star in God of War Ragnarok Commercial ad

The new God of War Ragnarok commercial is here, and Sony pulled Ben Stiller, John Travolta, LeBron James, and their children in for a support group in the ad. Stiller leads it as the fathers and their kids discuss being a parent and idolizing Kratos and Atreus’ relationship. [Thanks, Entertainment Weekly!]

Ben Stiller is leading the group in full God of War Ragnarok attire in the ad, with his son Quin by his side. He dispenses insight to John Travolta, who is there with Ella Travolta, and LeBron James, who is in attendance with Bronny. Stiller notes early on “The God of War dynamic plays out in every parent-child relationship. When that clicked for me, I picked up my Leviathan Axe and felt truly close to my son for the first time.” Quin Stiller then responds, “I’m 17.” This sets the dynamic for the rest of the video.

Here is the full God of War Ragnarok commercial.

Cliff Bleszinski on Doom Co-Creator John Romero: 'I Saw Him as My Enemy'

1 year 6 months ago

Video game industry veteran Cliff "CliffyB" Bleszinski has admitted he had an intense rivalry with id Software co-founder and Doom co-creator John Romero in the 1990s when he was working at Epic Games.

Speaking to IGN, Bleszinski said that, as the co-designer of Unreal, he was "gunning to try and defeat" id Software's Quake and its lead designer and director Romero.

"I saw Romero as my enemy," he said. "He was dating Stevie Case at the time, who's in Playboy and whatnot, and I was like, 'I'm going to take that guy down'. It goes back to, again, the whole, I had nothing and I wanted it, you had everything and you flaunted it. So we were gunning to try and defeat [Quake]."

"I saw Romero as my enemy. He was dating Stevie Case at the time, who's in Playboy and whatnot, and I was like, 'I'm going to take that guy down'.

He continued: "Ramiro was one of the first rockstar game designers and I looked at his playbook and I tried to emulate it as much as possible. He had his signature long hair, he has his painted nails, 'It's rock and roll, mate,' and then I was doing the whole blonde hair, the red hair, changing my looks up a lot because [of] being a pop culture nut."

Bleszinski said Epic utilized the concept of "counter programming" at the time, where they'd consider what id Software was doing, then do the opposite to one-up them and appeal to a different audience.

Microsoft Loses Between $100 and $200 on Every Xbox Sold

1 year 6 months ago

Xbox boss Phil Spencer has said Microsoft loses between $100 and $200 on every Xbox Series X and S sold.

As reported by CNBC (and spotted by Eurogamer), Spencer said at WSJ Live that Microsoft subsidises the cost of its Xbox consoles with the expectation that people will spend money on its profitable add-on products later.

Losing $100 to $200 per console is a fairly significant amount given the Xbox Series X retails for $499 and the Xbox Series S retails for $299, but consumers then purchasing additional controllers, headsets, games, and subscription services like Xbox Live and Game Pass is seemingly enough to justify the hit on day one.

Spencer has admitted that Xbox can't maintain these console prices forever though, and its main competitor in Sony has already raised the price of the PlayStation 5 in Europe, the UK, the Middle East, Africa, Asia, Latin America, and Canada.

God of War Sales Pass 23 Million Copies

1 year 6 months ago

PlayStation and Santa Monica Studio’s critically acclaimed God of War (2018) has now sold more than 23 million copies to date, according to the latest Sony earnings report.

The new sales figure is up from the 19.5 million copies sold as of October 2021, with the increase likely owed in part to the PC version of God of War being released earlier this year, that saw Sony's biggest launch on the platform to date.

God of War: Ragnarok's imminent release may be another reason for the boost in sales, and Sony is expecting the sequel to perform just as well as its predecessor.

"The previous God of War game released in 2018 was one of the biggest titles ever released exclusively for PlayStation, selling 23 million units cumulative to date," read the earnings report. "We expect similar performance from this new title as well."

The sequel will see the continuation of Kratos and his son Atreus's emotionally charged journey of self discovery as they venture through the lore steeped realms of Norse mythology while battling gods and monsters alike.

The Killing Tree Review

1 year 6 months ago

The Killing Tree is now available on digital and DVD.

"Christmas Horror" is one of the most bottom-weighted horror subgenres, packed with holiday title puns that deliver not an ounce of holly-jolly terror. Rhys Frake-Waterfield's The Killing Tree sounds like another no-budget X-Mas imposter, but consider this an early stocking stuffer. At roughly 70 minutes, with an absurd dedication to concept and extreme midnighter vibes? The Killing Tree unleashes a murderous Christmas tree on seasonal partygoers caught in an insane-to-describe ritual meant to raise a slasher from the dead.

Sarah Alexandra Marks stars as Faith, a solo Christmas hostess left alone in her family's massive estate one year after a murderer slayed her parents. Frake-Waterfield and co-writer Craig McLearie draw inspiration from Child's Play and Christmas Horror favorite Jack Frost as the soul of maniac Clayton Slayter (Marcus Massey) is summoned through black magic into the vessel of a Christmas tree – and not just any enraged Evergreen, either. Slayter's branchy form can seemingly fluctuate in size, stretches piny-spiky appendages like tentacles, and moves with human strides (comical shuffling). Translation? Some actor in a tree suit "stealthily" stomps around a drunken holiday party scenario and carries out an oddball massacre because no one here is fooling anyone about low-budget-but-fun intentions.

Ghost of Tsushima Is Weirdly Similar to Resident Evil According to Former Capcom Producer

1 year 6 months ago

Resident Evil's survival horror and Ghost of Tsushima's open world action couldn't seem further apart on paper, but the worldwide appeal of both games makes them weirdly similar according to a former Capcom producer.

Speaking to IGN, Hiroyuki Kobayashi said the U.S.-based Sucker Punch's creation of a globally appealing Japanese game like Ghost of Tsushima is very similar to how he and his colleagues at Capcom created the very American seeming Resident Evil franchise.

"As a game about Japan made by non-Japanese developers, Ghost of Tsushima kind of reminded me how we [at Capcom] as Japanese developers made a horror game set in the United States with Resident Evil back in the day," he said. "At the time, it might have been surprising for people that it was made by Japanese developers."

Creating an authentic experience from a culture outside your own isn't an easy task, however, but Kobayashi said the effort can lead to great success. "I think this shows that no matter what country or culture you make your game about, as long as you seriously study the topic and put your heart into it there’s always a chance," he said.

Sony Loses Nearly 2 Million PlayStation Plus Subscribers Since Service Revamp

1 year 6 months ago

The number of PlayStation Plus subscribers has fallen by almost two million since Sony launched its revamped subscription service in June.

According to the company’s latest financial report, Sony’s multi-tiered PlayStation Plus subscription service has dropped from 47.3 million at the end of June to 45.4 million in the three months leading up to September 30 - a decrease of 4%.

Sony highlighted that the ratio of gamers subscribed to the service is significantly higher on the PS5 than it is for the previous generation PS4 console. In response, Sony leadership plans to accelerate the adoption of PS5 hardware to “recover this user engagement going forward”.

The number of active users on the PlayStation Network also dropped by one million in the latest quarter to 102 million players.

Though its numbers dropped on the digital side, Sony still had a strong showing when it comes to PlayStation 5 hardware. The company announced it has now sold more than 25 million units, and was able to produce roughly 6.5 million new PS5s in the three months leading up to September 30

Sonic Frontiers Animated Prologue Shows Knuckles in Action

1 year 6 months ago

The official Sonic the Hedgehog YouTube channel has uploaded an animated short titled “Sonic Frontiers Prologue: Divergence.” Starring Knuckles, the short reveals how he wound up on the island players explore in Sonic Frontiers. You can watch the six-minute animation in its entirety below.

In the trailer, Knuckles provides a voice-over explanation of his background up until now, including the fact that he was tasked with guarding the Master Emerald, a relic that hasn’t appeared in the Sonic series for quite some time. The trailer ends with Knuckles absolutely demolishing some robots, and while we’ve received no indication that he will be playable in Sonic Frontiers, that sequence makes me hope he will be.

Knuckles has been a core Sonic character for most of the franchise’s existence, so it’s not surprising that he’s making an appearance in the blue blur’s latest adventure. While this animated prologue gives us insight into how he wound up on the island, it’s still not entirely clear why, especially when it comes to the appearance of Sage (a new character introduced in Sonic Frontiers) at the end of the trailer. We’ll have to wait for the full game to find out.

Outer Terror, An Arcade Bullet Hell Homage To B-Movie Horror, Hits PC Soon

1 year 6 months ago

Outer Terror Reveal Vox pop games salt and pixel top down arcade shooter

Developer Salt & Pixel and publisher VoxPop Games have revealed Outer Terror, a new arcade bullet hell with roguelite elements coming to PC soon. That's because its release is set for sometime this year, and given there are only two months left in 2022, it sounds like we won't have to wait too long to check it out.

Outer Terror's inspirations are clear from the jump: pulpy horror comics and B-movie horror from the 1980s and 1990s with a dash of arcade fun thrown in for good measure. In the game, you'll choose from one of 10 survivors to control, each with their own unique weapons and skills, to face off against waves of enemies. You can play by yourself, but you can also team up with a friend via two-player co-op.

"Whether playing solo or co-op, each playthrough of Outer Terror will give players a different experience with randomized weapons and upgrade choices, enemy patterns, and areas of the map," a press release reads. "You thought that safe zone would be in the same spot as last time? Think again. You'll have to slaughter your way through enemies to find it with each playthrough."

Paradise Marsh’s lo-fi landscapes will transport you to a new level of relaxation

1 year 6 months ago

Sometimes, I just want to wander around an aesthetically pleasing landscape with nice music doing menial tasks - and that’s exactly what I got from Paradise Marsh, a lovely little wildlife game from LazyEti. I’ve been playing some pretty intense games recently, throttling my game controller as I run away from literal waves of rats in A Plague Tale: Requiem and shifting my detective brain into overdrive grappling with the excellent mysteries in The Case of the Golden Idol.

I desperately need a game to sink into, basically Lo-fi Hip Hop Beats to Relax/Study To: The Game, or the equivalent of a deep body massage but directly onto my brain. Paradise Marsh has been the exact tonic I’ve needed, a chill bug-collectathon where you wander around pleasant, pastel landscapes discovering lots of fun little curiosities. It’s wonderful.
