Xbox announces Gamescom 2022 line-up

1 year 9 months ago

Microsoft has detailed the line-up of Xbox titles it's bringing to Gamescom in a couple of weeks, including Obsidian exclusive Pentiment, Age of Empires 4, Flight Sim and Grounded.

As a reminder, Microsoft is one of the few companies committed to Gamescom this year - and the only platform holder. Both Sony and Nintendo are sitting out the show's big in-person return, alongside Activision Blizzard and Take-Two.

Ubisoft, Bandai Namco and Embracer are among those also in attendance, though Assassin's Creed fans are expecting all of Ubisoft's big reveals to actually take place online, via a special event due in September.

Pokémon Go's ticketed global summer finale detailed

1 year 9 months ago

The big summer finale to Pokémon Go's season of Go Fest events has been detailed in full.

Due to take place on Saturday 27th August, this full-day event will cap off the game's introduction of Ultra Beasts and (hopefully) see its hunky Professor Willow return after being left dramatically MIA.

The event has plenty for those playing free, or extras for those with a ticket. These premium bits are also included as part of the earlier Global Go Fest weekend back in June - so if you played that, you're covered.

Demon Slayer: The Hinokami Chronicles DLC Adds Demon Nezuko

1 year 9 months ago

Hinokami Chronicles DLC

The latest round of Demon Slayer: The Hinokami Chronicles DLC is live, and adds a new character to the playable roster. As previously announced, the next character pack unlocks Nezuko Kamado in her Advanced Demon Form. Sega's also got a free add-on for all players, adding Group Match mode to online play.

The new Demon Slayer: The Hinokami Chronicles DLC is headed by Nezuko Kamado (Advanced Demon Form). She's the second of seven planned character additions, following Tengen Uzui in July 2022. Nezuko is Tanjiro's younger sister, and was transformed into a demon. Her Advanced Demon Form shows her when she's fully awakened to her demonic nature. Rather than the more childlike form she retains most times, Advanced Demon Form Nezuko has the height and bodily proportions of an adult. She's also got the strength of a high-level demon, growing a single horn on her forehead and sporting a vine-like pattern on her limbs and torso. In the Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba manga and anime series, she first adopted her Advanced Demon Form during the Entertainment District story arc. She transformed as she battled the demon Daki alongside her brother.

The Hinokami Chronicles DLC also brings with it a free update adding Group Matches to the game's online mode. Using Group Matches, up to eight players can gather in a single lobby to fight each other. Two players will fight, while the others spectate. Public rooms, room hosting, and rooms with friends can be set up.

The in-engine footage showed off the former Robin’s deadly competency with firearms as well his Lazarus Pit-induced powers, such as his spectral leaping ability. We also get a look at a unique cosmetic skin featuring a horned helmet that gives off serious Darth Maul vibes.

How to Defeat Heket Boss Fight in Cult of the Lamb

1 year 9 months ago

Cult of the Lamb is pretty much what you’d get if Stardew Valley and Hades had a baby, as it combines the best farm sim and roguelike elements from each respective game and makes for a Heket of a good time. The overall goal of the game is to defeat the four Bishops that have chained up your god, The One Who Waits, in chains. Here is everything you need to know about how to defeat the Heket boss fight in Cult of the Lamb, the second main boss in the game.

Before you go about trying to fight Heket, we recommend you go for Leshy first. Not only is this Bishop’s dungeon shorter, but it’ll also show you the ropes on how to collect tarot cards, choose paths, and collect resources in a much more forgiving environment.

How to Unlock Anura

In order to get to Heket, you’ll need to unlock their domain, Anura. To do this, you’ll have to have at least six followers unlocked and alive at your camp.

Once you have six cultists, all you have to do to unlock Anura is go to its door and press A or X, and then a ritual will be performed, unlocking the door. After you unlock the door, you’ll need to follow the paths until the circle right above the door is full. You’ll encounter plenty of events and mini-bosses along the way, but once it is filled up, you’ll be able to fight Heket.

How to Increase Follower Loyalty in Cult of the Lamb

1 year 9 months ago

As the title gives away, the main facet of Cult of the Lamb is starting a cult. Seeing as cults are tricky and require followers, keeping them happy and loyal is pretty important. We mean this purely for the game, as we’re definitely not trying to get into the cult business. With that in mind, here’s how to increase follower loyalty in Cult of the Lamb.

How to Give Blessings in Cult of the Lamb

One of the simplest ways to increase loyalty with all followers in Cult of the Lamb is that once a day, each of them can be interacted with and given a blessing. To do this, all you have to do is interact with your follower and go down to the hand sign to bless them. This is also a great way to keep track of your followers as their numbers grow.

New Saints Row Trailer Outlines Your Santo Ileso Takeover

1 year 9 months ago

A new gameplay overview trailer for the upcoming Saints Row reboot has dropped that gives a really detailed look at what all you will be facing when it comes to taking over Santo Ileso. Just like the previous games, you will be able to purchase shops to expand the Saint’s influence throughout the city.

You can find all of this in the trailer below. Buckle up, because it is certainly a wild ride.

First, you’ve got the several factions that you will be facing off with. Seeing as this is a Saints Row game, it’s not even slightly a surprise that one of the factions, The Idols, dress up like they are at an EDM concert. The fact that some of them wear helmets like they are in Daft Punk is just the cherry on top.

Of course, no game like Saints Row is complete without a police presence. Turns out The Marshalls privatized the local police force and have more than enough “defense technology” to pose a legitimate threat.

Cult of the Lamb Review – Can’t Help But Drink the Kool-Aid

1 year 9 months ago

Cult of the Lamb on PC

When Cult of the Lamb was first announced, I couldn’t help but be intrigued by this roguelike’s macabre idea of building your own cult adorn with cute anthropomorphic followers. Little did I know that beneath this dark and adorable surface lies arguably the most intricate and enthralling game of 2022.

Cult of the Lamb puts players in the shoes of a possessed lamb that has been sentenced to death by the four Bishops that rule his land. While killed at the beginning of the game, this nameless protagonist is saved from death by a god-like stranger named “The One Who Waits.”

In order to repay the debt, they must create a cult of loyal followers in The One Who Waits’ name, cultivate power, and defeat the Bishops who put it in chains. Gameplay-wise, Cult of the Lamb is pretty much the demonic love child of Hades and Stardew Valley.

Crusades are the rougelike element of the game, as you’ll go out into five randomly generated worlds in order to fight rival cultists, gather resources, and collect perks and weapons that’ll help get you stronger. The village is where farming comes in, as you’re tasked with indoctrinating innocent creatures you meet while on Crusades.

sacrifice

Take care of your followers well enough and upgrade the area with more helpful resources, and you’ll be rewarded with unimaginable power. At first, I honestly didn’t think that these elements would work together, but boy, was I wrong.

Marvel’s Spider-Man PC Review – Ultrawide Web-Slinging

1 year 9 months ago

Marvel’s Spider-Man on PC

Insomniac Games’ Spider-Man was undeniably one of the best game releases of 2018. Like so many other Sony exclusive titles, Marvel’s Spider-Man featured that familiar polished sheen of a well-designed open-world and a solid story to get lost in. Honestly, there’s little else Insomniac could do to make an already great game even better, and while that holds true for the PC port, that certainly doesn’t stop it from being a damn fine experience.

Marvel’s Spider-Man finally webshoots its way to PCs this month, and if Sony’s past PC ports are any indication, players can probably expect this one to be more than playable as well. After spending some time with a pre-release version of the game, I can safely say that, yes, Spider-Man looks and runs excellently on PC, and it’s a great chance to jump into the game if you missed it on PS4.

Right off the bat, the main thing that caught my eye was full ultrawide support. As a fairly recent ultrawide convert, I’ve been absolutely aghast at the number of games out there that just don’t support the 21:9 ratio –I’m looking at you, Elden Ring– or don’t have full support for it, often coming with weird drawbacks or little niggles that keep it from looking as perfect as it could be. Spider-Man’s PC port comes packed with support for a whole range of resolutions, and even goes up to 48:9 for triple monitor setups.

That’s a little too extreme for me, but being able to play Spider-Man on an ultrawide display feels like night and day, compared to my first playthrough on PS4 back in 2018. Especially in an open-world game like this where you spend most of your time swinging across the Manhattan skyline, every frame looks cinematic and just downright beautiful.

Pokémon TCG Lost Origin Preview: Hisuian Zoroark VStar Does 300 Damage!

1 year 9 months ago

With the next Pokémon TCG expansion Sword & Shield—Lost Origin fast approaching on September 9, IGN is excited to offer a sneak peak at what’s to come. Check out the gallery below for your exclusive first look at the English version of new cards such as Hisuian Zoroark VStar, Rotom V, and the full-art Supporter card Nessa.

Hisuian Zoroark VStar in particular is of special note because it’s already proven itself in Japan where the card has done well in local tournaments. Its Ticking Curse attack does 50 damage for each of your Pokémon that have any damage counters, so a full board of six Pokémon all with damage on them maxes out at a whopping 300 damage. Even when factoring in the -20 damage from the Double Turbo Energy that many Trainers will likely use to pay for the attack cost, that’s still enough damage to knock out popular 280 HP cards such as Arceus VStar and Palkia VStar. Given that Lost Origin also includes new cards that help you sprinkle damage counters across your board, it won’t be too hard to reach that 280 damage threshold, so expect Hisuian Zoroark VStar to be sought after for competitive decks.

People hated Forspoken's dialogue so much that it made 'Joss Whedon' trend on Twitter

1 year 9 months ago

Some of the early trailers for Forspoken, a Squeenix action-adventure/RPG epic coming in January, suggested portentious world-saving stuff. This is a different vibe to a clip shared on Forspoken's offical Twitter this week, which featured main character Frey Holland doing a "Yup, that's me!" kind of elevator pitch for the game. A lot of people on the birdsite took an instant, vehement dislike to Frey's dialogue, and were just as instantly sure who to blame for the peachy keen quiplashing, even if by proxy. Yes, Joss Whedon strikes again.

Lost In Play review: a gorgeous point and click puzzler

1 year 9 months ago

You know when a game instantly charms the socks off you the moment you first clap eyes on it? Point and click puzzler Lost In Play is one of those games for me. Its vibrant cartoon visuals immediately caught my attention when I first sampled its Steam Next Fest demo earlier in the year, and I'm happy to report that the full game, out today, is just as captivating as it was back then.

It tells the tale of Toto and Gal, a pair of rambunctious siblings who end up far from home after getting lost inside a fantasy world of their own imagining. If they don't find a way back before nightfall, though, they'll be stuck there forever. A classic kids adventure story, in other words, but one that really relishes in its own sense of playfulness. Over the course of their four-odd hour adventure, they'll meet monster fighting frogs in a dark forest, board game-playing seagulls on the high seas, orc mechanics in a vast desert and even a heavy-metal loving sheep on a floating island in the sky as they make their way home to their messy childhood bedroom. It all makes for some memorable puzzling backdrops, but be warned: if you're planning to play this with little ones, then you'll definitely need a puzzle savvy adult in the mix, as some of its brainteasers aren't quite as child-friendly as you might expect.

Marvel's Spider-Man PC: why we aren't posting our review today

1 year 9 months ago

The embargo for the highly anticipated Marvel's Spider-Man Remastered lifted today and you may be wondering where the Digital Foundry coverage is - we received the game a while back along with most other outlets. Well, the truth is that developer Nixxes is still hard at work with the game, patches are still incoming (the latest arriving a few hours ago) and we're intent on delivering coverage that accurately reflects the state of the game you'll be playing on day oneas best as we can manage. Right now, the port is looking exceptionally impressive in many regards but to briefly sum up, it plays brilliant on higher-end PCs, it also works very nicely on Steam Deck, but we've experienced some problems with low to mid-range GPUs. In fact, the very latest update to the game seeks to address those very issues - with some success.

Taking a more global look at the conversion though, there's much to commend Nixxes' efforts. The game supports all aspects ratios we could test, from the 16:9 of most modern screens to the 21:9 and 32:9 ultra-wide variants, the 16:10 of Steam Deck and even 4:3 for those interested in an old-school CRT experience. On top of this, there's adjustable field of view support too.

Long-in-the-works Half-Life 2 VR mod gets public beta next month

1 year 9 months ago

A fan-made Half-Life 2 VR mod nearly eight years in the making will finally be getting a public release next month in the form of an open beta.

Eurogamer first reported on the Source VR Mod Team's Half-Life 2: VR mod in 2017, but that version was actually an extension of an earlier mod released for Razer Hydra back in 2013. Some time after the new version's announcement, the project appeared to stall - it entered "its own kind of development hell and was all but abandoned", according to the team's website - but it re-emerged in 2021 and is slowly approaching the finish line.

Half-Life 2: VR - one of several attempts to bring Valve's seminal shooter sequel to virtual reality headsets - promises a range of features, including room scale VR, the ability to manipulate items and weapons directly with your hands, full locomotion, a weapon selection menu inspired by Valve's Half-Life: Alyx, and tweaked vehicle rides intended to help reduce motion sickness.

Last night, fans spotted games such as Soul Hackers 2, GTA5 and Elden Ring were listed with an option to play via cloud streaming. Some speculated this was being rolled out now, in advance of a Gamescom announcement later this month.

But Microsoft has now said that the games' listings - which also flagged them as being part of Xbox Game Pass - were bugged, and that the issue has now been fixed.

The Secret of Monkey Island saw 25% of its dialogue cut before release

1 year 9 months ago

Technological constraints meant that the original Monkey Island game saw 25 percent of its dialogue text cut before it was released.

Talking to Sony Santa Monica's Alanah Pearce, writer Tim Schafer revealed that The Secret of Monkey Island was originally too long and had to get some heavy editing.

"We were writing on Monkey Island, and we were told 'you guys, we can't go on six floppies. We have to go on five. We have too much text,'" Schafer recalled before remarking how strange that sort of thing is to imagine now.

Farthest Frontier understands the best moments of city-builders are the beginnings

1 year 9 months ago

To me, the best moments of a city-building game are always the beginnings, when there's nothing but potential ahead of you. Things are manageable, the world is unspoiled, the pace is slow. To me, that's idyllic. And if ever a game understood that, it's Farthest Frontier.

It's a game about a group of working class people fed up with being shat on by the rich, in the big city where they live, so they strike out for the literal farthest frontier to make it on their own. It's that fantasy. The era is the birth of the Industrial Revolution, maybe - it's not explicitly clear. And that's how it begins: a dozen people and a caravan and an endless wilderness around them to tame.

What I love about what comes next is how unhurriedly it happens, and how small-scale it continues to be. Farthest Frontier is not about going from dozens to thousands, from village to sprawling metropolis, and that zooming out you then feel as the person in charge. It's about staying small and staying close to the people you're caring for. It's probably wrong to call it a city-builder at all but rather a town-builder, because even many hours in, from what I've read, settlements are still only a few hundred people big (apparently the game struggles performance-wise past that, but it is Early Access).
