Dark Fantasy Action RPG Thymesia Gets August Release Date, Steam Demo

1 year 11 months ago

Thymesia

OverBorder studio has announced a new release date for its action RPG Thymesia, which had been delayed out of its original December 2021 launch. Curious players can take control of the world’s deadliest plague doctor on August 9.

That’s not all, as the news is accompanied by a new trailer and the launch of a Steam demo. You can play Thymesia beginning today and up until Monday, May 9. If this is your first exposure to Thymesia, it was first revealed last March and stars Corvus, a plague doctor with the ability to siphon diseases from adversaries and fashion these illnesses into weapons. Schythes, swords, and daggers are among the killing instruments he can wield in fast-paced combat reminiscent of Dark Souls and Ninja Gaiden.

Thymesia is coming to PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.

1 year 11 months ago

Xbox has unveiled its latest official wireless controller colour: Deep Pink.

Revealed on Microsoft's website, this is one of the more standard designs Xbox has released recently. The controller has a plain pink coating across the entire front of the controller, with matching pink buttons and a white back, and comes in at a $64.99 price point. You can buy it from the Microsoft Store now.

The existing line of one-colour controllers, including White, Black, Red, Blue, and Volt (which is either yellow or green depending on who you ask), now retail for $59.99, although some did launch at more expensive price points.

The Deep Pink iteration includes all the standard Xbox Series controller features players should expect - including textured triggers and bumpers, the hybrid, circular d-pad, and more - and is compatible as usual with any Xbox Series or One plus PC and mobile.

Microsoft has released several different versions of its new Xbox wireless controller since the Series consoles launched in November 2020, including limited editions such as the 20th Anniversary version and the shiny blue Aqua Shift.

1 year 11 months ago

Fortnite is returning to the galaxy far, far away for its now-yearly Star Wars event.

Kicking off the May the 4th Star Wars Day celebrations, Fortnite will be adding usable lightsabers into the game, with previously available Star Wars items unvaulted from May 3 until May 17, 2022.

Additionally, you can buy any non-Battle Pass Star Wars outfit as they return to the shop.

Also returning to the island is the iconic E-11 blaster used by Stormtroopers throughout the original Star Wars trilogy. To get your hands on the blaster, look out for Stormtroopers who have set up checkpoints across the island in search of Obi-Wan. They’re also appearing randomly in chests, too.

There’s also some new Stormtrooper training in the form of some new Star Wars Quests. Active until May 17 at 12am ET, you’ll confiscate a “landspeeder”, try out some Jedi contraband (a lightsaber), and more. Each quest awards a bunch of XP and completing 5 of these will give you the new Empire Banner.

This year’s lightsabers include:

‘This Was Like the Manhattan Project of Games’: How Return to Monkey Island Became a Reality

1 year 11 months ago

Legendary adventure game designer and Monkey Island creator Ron Gilbert had waited years for this. By “this” he’s not just talking about the chance to finally make his own Monkey Island 3 – officially titled Return to Monkey Island – but also about the opportunity to announce it. “Announcing this game on April 1 has been a dream of mine for years,” he told IGN, referencing the April Fool’s-but-not-really post on his personal blog. “That was the big thrill to me.” The official reveal, along with a teaser trailer, came the following Monday, shocking the gaming world.

Gilbert had been noodling on a project by himself when Monkey Island unexpectedly came back into his life. “I was working on a little RPG game that I was just doing solo, just me,” he said. “That was kind of a hobby project more than anything.” And then came PAX 2019. “The whole thing started at PAX 2019,” he explained. “I got together with Nigel [Lowrie], who runs Devolver, and he said, ‘Hey, we’re interested in doing Monkey Island. We kinda have a little bit of an in with [Monkey Island IP owner] Disney, and we think we can pull this off.’ So I was intrigued by that. Having them involved made it interesting to me. So I told them that I needed to think about it for a while; to make sure I had a good idea. That’s when I called up Dave. When we felt comfortable, then I went back and said, ‘OK, let’s do this thing.’”

Elden Ring Modders are Already Adding Star Wars, One Piece, Hollow Knight and More

1 year 11 months ago

Elden Ring modders are currently adding a ton of pop culture franchises into the game, including clever (and bizarre) mods to add elements from Star Wars, One Piece, Hollow Knight, and even Life Is Strange.

The mods range from adding simple costumes – Zelda's Dark Link for example – that let players cosplay their favourite characters, to weapons that allow you wield spells using Harry Potter's Elder Wand.

The Nexus Mods community has been hard at work bringing just about every franchise imaginable to Elden Ring, and as it was released only two months ago, there are sure to be plenty more on the way. Here are some of our favorites so far:

Star Wars Elden Ring Mods

Darth%20Vader%20arrives%20in%20Elden%20Ring%20in%20this%20mod.

Arriving from a galaxy far, far away, this Star Wars mod adds Darth Vader to Elden Ring complete with a flowing cape and flashing lights atop his life support unit.

No Star Wars character would be complete without a lightsaber, of course and, since all the rules have been broken already, why not equip Vader with Darth Maul's double-bladed lightsaber, available in five different colours.

Here's a quick look at Sonic Prime on Netflix

1 year 11 months ago

Netflix has released a new trailer for its upcoming kids shows, giving us a new look at Sonic Prime.

I will cut to the chase, however. Yes, we do have some new footage of the spiked blue one roaring onto the screen as he collects up his golden rings, quipping, "I know what you're thinking - I'm goooood. And powerful, apparently. Jealous?!", but... well that is really all we get to see. On the other hand, it is nice to know that Sonic hasn't been given the boot following Netflix's recent animation purge, so every cloud.

You can check out the footage for yourself below (PSA: unless you want to see what other kids shows are coming - some of which do certainly look like they are a lot of fun - skip forward to 1.49 to see Sonic's bit).

The PS5 VRR update: tested and discussed by Digital Foundry

1 year 11 months ago

This past week and some 18 months after the launch of the PS5, support for Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) technology has finally landed on the Sony console. This feature has been on Xbox and PC for years, where it's been key to smoothing out uneven frame-rates, reducing judder and eliminating screen tearing - so VRR on PS5 brings some level of parity across platforms. But just how good is the PS5 implementation - where does it succeed, and where does it fall a bit short?

To discuss this, John Linneman and Alex Battaglia met up to compare notes. One limitation we noted right away is that VRR doesn't work on every display - Alex's Samsung NU8000 TV showed a black screen when launching a game with VRR enabled - but John was able to test more than 20 games on the system to good effect with his LG CX OLED. In most games, VRR does what it says on the tin, synchronising the refresh rate of the display to the frame-rate of the game, but it does come with some limitations.

Most importantly, VRR on PS5 only works within a narrow window defined by the HDMI Forum's 2.1 standard, between 48Hz and 60Hz (on a 60Hz screen) or 48Hz and 120Hz (on a 120Hz screen). Normally a feature called Low Framerate Compensation (LFC) will kick in at frame-rates below the VRR window, essentially doubling or tripling frames to ensure that VRR remains active. For example, if your game is running at 40fps, then you could double that to 80fps to remain within the 48 to 120Hz range. On PS5 though, it's possible to drop out of the VRR window entirely, which can lead to judder and all the other symptoms that VRR seeks to alleviate.

1950s Psychological Thriller Don’t Worry Darling Teases a Sexy, Wild Ride

1 year 11 months ago

Warner Bros. Pictures officially unveiled the first look of its upcoming psychological horror pic, Don’t Worry Darling, which is scheduled to release exclusively in theaters on Sept. 23, 2022. Feel free to take a gander of the brand new trailer down below, but be warned, it’s pretty eerie stuff.

Clocking in at just under three minutes long, the new footage is equally raunchy as it is disturbing. Boasting top-notch acting talent from the likes of Midsommar’s Florence Pugh, Dunkirk’s Harry Styles, Star Trek‘s Chris Pine, and Crazy Rich Asians’ Gemma Chan, Don’t Worry Darling is bursting at the seams with style and star power.

Helmed by Booksmart’s Olivia Wilde, Don’t Worry Darling appears to be a Truman Show-esque pull-the-rug-from-under-you thriller that sees a happy couple living an idyllic life in a peculiarly perfect smalltown. Things take a turn for the worse when Alice (Pugh) begins asking one too many questions about their eerily perfect existence.

Loot River Review – Worthwhile Puzzle With Pieces That Don’t Quite Fit

1 year 11 months ago

Loot River on PC

Every once in a while, a game appears in the indie scene with an ingenious idea that comes from mashing up iconic games and manages to create something noteworthy. Usually, it has gorgeous, hand-drawn pixel art that blows away viewers or has a compelling atmosphere that sucks you in from the get-go. Loot River captures all those qualities and has much more going for it; however, pieces of its gameplay and how it all comes together hold it back from how great it could be.

Developed by straka.studio and published with the help of indie fund SUPERHOT PRESENTS, Loot River is a procedurally-generated dungeon-crawler action roguelike that combines weighty Dark Souls combat with spatial block-shifting traversal from the likes of Tetris.

Amazon Prime Day 2022: Everything we know so far

1 year 11 months ago

Amazon have confirmed that Prime Day 2022 will take place this July, finally nailing down the deals-o-thon to a time window and denying me any more excuses to put off writing a guide about it.

Like a shorter Black Friday, this can be a good opportunity to pick up some PC gaming hardware at severely slashed prices, so if you’re currently weighing up a new SSD or replacement mouse then it may be prudent to hold off until the event gets underway. And you might not even need to shop at Amazon for it, as some rival retailers like to run their own deals to compete with Prime Day directly.

Citizen Sleeper review: a stylish machine with a gooey human heart

1 year 11 months ago

Say hello to Feng. Feng is a zealous computers guy with less of an axe to grind and more of a guillotine to set up. He is not my favourite character in Citizen Sleeper but he is the one who best represents it. In one scene he explains his deep anti-capitalist reasoning to you. Systems should not govern people's behaviour, he says, the people are what matters.

Throwing off the shackles of a faceless process governing your life is a recurring theme in this blend of sci-fi RPG and interactive fiction, and it makes for a strong rags-to-ramen story of one robot on the run. Even when the game's own systems of dice and clocks clash with its stories of human interest, it is the people who come out on top.

Inside the Growing Discontent Behind Nintendo’s Fun Facade

1 year 11 months ago

In 2010, Nintendo of America opened its brand-new headquarters in Redmond, Washington on a 10-acre plot owned by the company since the early 1980s. The late Satoru Iwata cut the ribbon on the state-of-the-art facility alongside then-Washington State governor Chris Gregoire on a "gleaming 300,000 square foot facility" with "cushioned benches shaped like d-pads" and a "Mario Kart-themed parking garage." It was everything a Nintendo fan could imagine, right down to the main boardroom being known as "The Master Sword."

Across the way, past a soccer pitch of the sort one often sees on West Coast tech campuses, is a much older building that isn't nearly as well-known. A former warehouse that houses a hodge-podge of departments ranging from data science to Product Testing and Development (PDT), it in some ways hearkens back to the days when NOA was simply an arcade distributor operating out of New Jersey. The warehouse doors are still visible, and the freight elevator near the greeting desk will sometimes get stuck open and make loud grinding noises. While Nintendo has spruced up the decoration with some Mario-themed diagrams, it's otherwise a nondescript work area with an atmosphere akin to a library.

Square Enix's Embracer Sale Is Certainly Surprising... But It Could Be a Good Thing

1 year 11 months ago

These days, video game company acquisitions have become a routine part of the newscycle, and we tend to talk about them in billions. Look at a mega-deal like Xbox’s $68.7 billion Activision-Blizzard acquisition, Sony’s $3.6 billion acquisition of Bungie, or the handful of other billions-of-dollars deals that seem to be the norm in 2022.

So the latest acquisition headline is surprising, at least at first glance, because the number involved is so much lower than we’ve come to expect - Embracer Group acquiring three Square Enix studios and their major franchises like Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, and more for only $300 million. For longrunning, critically acclaimed studios and their decades-long running series… that number, especially compared to other acquisitions, seems like a steal, right? Well, it certainly seems like it from a player perspective, but Square Enix has previously labeled many of these studios’ releases, despite critical success, as commercially disappointing in past earnings reports, and it has stated a goal to invest in more technologies like blockchain, AI, and the cloud. With this in mind, studios developing traditionally single-player, narrative adventures may not neatly fit into that company vision. And that means the sale might actually be a good thing for these studios in the long run.

The Long-Delayed Prince of Persia Remake Has a New Studio

1 year 11 months ago

Ubisoft has announced that the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake is now being handled by Ubisoft Montreal, who created the Sands of Time trilogy. The project was originally in development over at Ubisoft Pune and Ubisoft Mumbai, two of the company's studios in India.

"This decision is an important step and the team, building upon the work achieved by Ubisoft Pune and Ubisoft Mumbai, will now take the time they need to regroup on the scope of the game to deliver you the best experience for this remake of an all-time classic, when it's ready," Ubisoft says in a statement on Twitter.

The Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time remake was first announced in September 2020 with a release date of January 2021. It seemed like everything was set as various retailers had listings and preorder bonuses up. However, in December 2020, Ubisoft announced that the game would be delayed to March 18, 2021. When February 2021 rolled around, Ubisoft announced that it had been delayed once again, this time indefinitely.

Blizzard's new Warcraft mobile game is free-to-play "tower offence" Arclight Rumble

1 year 11 months ago

Back in February, Activision Blizzard revealed its long-running Warcraft franchise would be heading to mobile this year - and we now know exactly what form it'll take thanks to the official reveal of free-to-play "tower offence" game Warcraft Arclight Rumble for iOS and Android.

Arclight Rumble is being pitched as a combination of strategy game and tower defense, that sees players choosing from one of several leaders across five factions - Alliance, Horde, Beast, Blackrock, and Undead - each with their own abilities and specialisations.

Objectives vary depending on the chosen map (of which Blizzard is promising 70+ at launch), and these can range from skirmishes to boss battles. Players will need to deploy their units from their available "minis" - 60 collectible minis are being touted for release - and more powerful units can be deployed by gathering gold as a match plays out.

The 55-inch LG C1 OLED TV has hit a low price on Amazon UK

1 year 11 months ago

The LG C1 OLED is the top 4K TV Digital Foundry recommendation for HDR gaming, even over the updated C2, and it's on sale at Amazon UK today. At £1051, it's some £150 less than it was at the start of February, and close to the lowest price we've ever seen it - barring a few one-off deals on smaller sites. That's a great value for a TV with inky blacks, gorgeous colours, wide viewing angles, low input lag and full HDMI 2.1 support.

Not only is the C1 great for 4K gaming, but it also has a best-in class OLED panel and four HDMI 2.1 ports that can output up to 120Hz, giving you the ability to plug in a PS5, Xbox Series X, PC and still have one port left over - say, for a future console?

So why do we still recommend the LG C1 over the newer C2? Well, a lot of it is down to the price - the LG C2 has just launched and therefore still commands an £850 premium over the C1 - but it's also down to the features. The LG C2 no longer supports black frame insertion (BFI) at 120Hz, which was a very useful tool for improving motion clarity.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake Will Be Finished by Ubisoft Montreal; Will Release When it’s Ready

1 year 11 months ago

Today Ubisoft wrote another chapter of the infinite saga of the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake.

Following multiple delays, leadership for the development of the game will pass from Ubisoft Pune and Mumbai to Ubisoft Montréal.

It’s worth mentioning that Ubisoft Montréal is the developer of the original game, and according to the announcement it will “build upon the work” done by the previous studios and regroup on the scope of the game, which will be released when it’s ready.

Basically, we’ll have to wait longer to even know a new release window.

You can read the full announcement below.

The game was originally announced all the way back in 2020 with a January 21, 2021 release date for PS4, Xbox One, and PC. Quite obviously, that did not materialize.

Here’s how it was originally described, even if we don’t know how much of that will still apply to the finished game.

Your favourite gaming mouse is going cheap at Amazon UK

1 year 11 months ago

The Logitech G502 Hero is the most popular gaming mouse on the market, not to mention the RPS reader's choice and our current 'best gaming mouse overall' - so it's exciting news that it's going cheap on Amazon UK today.

£29.99 is the cheapest we've ever seen this mouse, beating out last year's Black Friday price, and it's also 63% off its UK RRP. That's a fantastic deal for a comfy mouse with 11 programmable buttons, adjustable weights and an 'infinite' scroll wheel.

If you prefer your mice with more batteries and fewer cables, the wireless G502 Lightspeed is also discounted heavily, from £129.99 to £57.99. I reckon that's strong value for a mouse that remains comfy, high-spec and fully-featured, while adding on Logitech's industry-leading wireless tech. The wireless mouse is also much less frequently discounted than its predecessor, which does tend to see a price drop in line with the major 'shopping holidays' of the year.

Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time Remake Development Shifts To Original Developer

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time is a beloved entry in the action-adventure series and the original 2003 release was developed by Ubisoft Montreal.

In September of 2020, Ubisoft announced that it was remaking The Sands of Time, this time with Ubisoft Pune and Ubisoft Mumbai handling development. Originally set to release in January of 2021, Ubisoft revealed toward the end of 2020 that the remake had been delayed two months. Just three months later, Ubisoft announced that The Sands of Time was delayed indefinitely and that’s when fans began to wonder what was going on with this remake. It sounds like Ubisoft Pune and Ubisoft Mumbai couldn’t get a grasp on the remake because now, the publisher has revealed that the remake’s development has been shifted to Ubisoft Montreal, the original creator of the game.

Redout 2, the sequel to 34BigThings's blisteringly fast, wonderfully stylish anti-grav racer, now has a release date and will be speeding onto Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, and PC on 26th May.
