1 year 11 months ago

Square Enix has sold off its western studios and over 50 intellectual properties to Embracer Group for just $300m.

The sale, which is set to go through by September this year, means Embracer owns Crystal Dynamics, Eidos Montreal and Square Enix Montreal, as well as IPs including Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, Thief and Legacy of Kain. That amounts to around 1100 employees.

As already announced, a new Tomb Raider is in development at Crystal Dynamics, built on Unreal Engine 5. Thoughts now turn to other games potentially in development at these just-bought studios.

Square Enix Says Embracer Acquisitions Allow It to Invest More in the Blockchain, AI, and the Cloud

1 year 11 months ago

Square Enix has shared some of its reasoning behind the decision to sell Crystal Dynamics, Eidos-Montréal, and Square Enix Montréal to Embracer Group, saying the transaction will allow the company to invest more in the blockchain, AI, and the cloud.

Square Enix revealed the purpose of the transaction in its execution of share transfer agreement with change to subsidiaries document, saying it will assist the company in "adapting to the changes underway in the global business environment by establishing a more efficient allocation of resources, which will enhance corporate value by accelerating growth in the Company’s core businesses in the digital entertainment domain."

"In addition, the Transaction enables the launch of new businesses by moving forward with investments in fields including blockchain, AI, and the cloud," Square Enix said.

This news follow Square Enix president Yosuke Matsuda's New Year's Day 2022 letter that was centered on the company's growing focus on NFTs, blockchain games, and the metaverse. Matsuda also reiterated his interest in blockchain games in April 2022.

Elden Ring: Where To Get Meteorite

1 year 11 months ago

Collecting every spell in Elden Ring is quite an undertaking, so it's nice when some of them are simple and easy to round up. In the case of the visually-impressive sorcery Meteorite, you can snag it by simply defeating an easy boss at an evergaol in a mid-game area. In this guide, we'll tell you where you can do just that so that you can mark one more spell off your list.

Meteorite explained

Meteorite is a sorcery that requires 30 Intelligence to cast. It summons small meteors from the sky to do damage to enemies in an AOE fashion, though there's a randomness to their trajectories, making it a bit of a literal hit-or-miss spell to use on groups of foes.

Meteorite's item description reads:

One of the glintstone sorceries that manipulates gravitational forces. Summons a void that emits a rain of small meteorites. Hold to continue the effect. The sorcery originates from the Onyx Lords, who had skin of stone, and were called lords in reverential fear of their destructive power.

Where to find Meteorite

Meteorite can be obtained by defeating the Onyx Lord at the Royal Grave Evergaol in northern Liurnia of the Lakes. To access this spot, however, you'll first need to make your way through Caria Manor on the upper left side of the biome. Once you've defeated the boss there and exited through the back of the manor, head east until you reach the evergaol.

Apex Legends Doubles Down On PvE In Season 13, Adding IMC Armories To Storm Point

1 year 11 months ago

Apex Legends Season 13 kicks off May 10, adding Bangalore's brother, Jackson Williams, as the new playable legend--he's masquerading as Newcastle, a man who repeatedly tried and failed to enter the Apex Games. Alongside Newcastle, Season 13 makes some map changes to Storm Point, with developer Respawn seemingly putting a greater emphasis on implementing player-vs-environment (PvE) play with the addition of IMC Armories.

Every battle royale map in Apex Legends has its own flavor, and Storm Point has leaned towards PvE from the very beginning, launching with prowler and spider nests scattered throughout. The wildlife presented a risk-vs-reward system for players; moving through them offered what could potentially be a more direct route to the zone and the chance to earn more loot, but at the risk of having to contend with dangerous beasts.

Fighting off prowlers or spiders also ran the risk of creating enough racket to attract nearby squads, sandwiching you between the wildlife and other players. Few things in Apex Legends are more nerve-wracking than hearing the slow wind-up of an enemy Devotion in one ear and the hungry roar of a prowler in the other.

Chip Shortage Will Last Until 2024, Intel CEO Says

1 year 11 months ago

The ongoing chip and semiconductor shortage, which has been affecting technology across a wide range of products--including game consoles--has been going on for about two years now, but Intel's CEO says we could see it continue until 2024. That could mean continued supply problems on everything from the PS5 to new cars.

Speaking to CNBC, Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger said the chip shortages have begun hitting the equipment needed to manufacture products, and "some of those factory ramps will be more challenged." The company's previous estimate had the shortage going into 2023, but the volatile nature of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has made it pretty much impossible to nail down a firm date.

Intel is taking matters into its own hands to avoid supply bottlenecks in the future, as it's building a $20 billion chip production facility in Columbus, OH. However, this facility won't actually be operational until 2025, at which point it's possible these ongoing supply issues will no longer be as severe.

Square Enix Says Embracer Sale Will Help Fund Its Blockchain Investment

1 year 11 months ago

Square Enix has shed more light on its decision to sell its Western game development studios and IPs to Embracer Group, as the Japanese company says the deal will further help it invest in the blockchain and other technologies.

The deal--which is valued at $300 million--will see Crystal Dynamics, Eidos-Montreal, and Square Enix Montreal join Embracer Group's portfolio of studios, as well. IPs in the sale include Tomb Raider, Deux Ex, and Legacy of Kain, among others.

"The transaction will assist the company in adapting to the changes underway in the global business environment by establishing a more efficient allocation of resources, which will enhance corporate value by accelerating growth in the company’s core businesses in the digital entertainment domain," Square Enix said in an official statement via Business Wire.

Aside from investing in the blockchain, Square Enix also plans to explore the fields of AI and the cloud, a move it says is meant to optimize its business structure as part of a medium-term business strategy that was unveiled last year.

Square Enix president Yosuke Matsuda expressed an interest last month in the company creating more blockchain games with play-to-earn elements, as he explained that the traditional video game business model would not be enough to secure the future of the company. In a letter, Matsuda wrote of his belief that blockchain games "hold the potential to enable self-sustaining game growth" by pushing the play-to-earn concept further.

Stripped-down no more: How mobile delivers the full gaming experience

1 year 11 months ago

Mobile gaming is one of the industry's fastest-growing sectors, and it keeps getting bigger. It generated $93.2 billion in 2021, comprising more than half of the gaming market. With mobile gaming on the rise, big publishers are taking notice. Players like Take-Two and Xbox Game Studios have recently made major mobile gaming acquisitions, betting on continued growth.

A significant driver of this growth is that technology is catching up with ambition. LTE had the speed for gaming, but mobile players could run into latency issues that made massively multiplayer games somewhat frustrating and unresponsive. The same was true for cloud gaming, which allows players to enjoy console or PC games by streaming them. Cloud gaming requires the network to do the heavy lifting--normally the job of the console--which makes network latency critical in order to ensure low input lag and responsive controls.

Apex Legends Mobile Is Launching Worldwide This Month

1 year 11 months ago

Respawn has just announced that Apex Legends Mobile will be launching worldwide this month. Fans will be able to play the game on iOS or Android devices sooner than expected, as the call for pre-registration wasn’t too long ago.

This version of the game was built from the ground up with mobile devices in mind, so there isn’t any crossplay functionality between it and the other versions on PC and console. With that said, this also means that there are mobile-only modes and features that can’t be played anywhere else.

Signalis: The First Preview

1 year 11 months ago

When I first laid eyes on Signalis, I was immediately fascinated by its futuristic sci-fi setting and the enigmatic aura that was brought alongside it. I knew very little about it going into my demo, but after my 30-minute playtime with the opening segment, I walked away with more questions about what lies throughout this mysterious adventure.

Signalis put me in the shoes of a Replika named Elster who wakes up from cryo sleep on a desolated spaceship. As I explored, I quickly found myself encountering foreign lifeforms who have infiltrated the ship, but lacked any apparent intelligence aside from their only known goal – that being killing you. I also learned that the ship’s goal was to find planets that were habitable to eventually migrate to and, for some unknown reason, the ship has crash landed on a snow planet.

I immediately felt enclosed in a claustrophobic space aboard the ship, with each room being small with little room to maneuver. This lack of capacity would have been even more effective if enemies would follow you into other rooms, but for whatever reason, they don’t. If you’re able to escape, they’ll just stay where they were when you entered the next room. Having them continue chasing me throughout the ship would have given me a more sense of urgency and realism to the experience.

Here's Spider-Man In the Matrix Awakens Unreal Engine 5 Demo

1 year 11 months ago

The Matrix Awakens demo created on Unreal Engine 5 may have been created for one pop-culture franchise, but that hasn't stopped modders from adding other favorites like Spider-Man to its world.

As reported by Eurogamer, YouTuber DWR shared footage of a playable Spider-Man demo - which you can see here - set in the Megacity created for The Matrix Awakens demo that was created by using Lewis Fiford's UE4 Spider-Man Project. As one would expect, the demo - which you can download here - allows you to swing around like Spidey and even wall-run on the city's many buildings.

DWR notes that the demo is "a heavy load" and will come with some frame rate drops, but it does give a glimpse of what the future of Spider-Man could look like on UE5.

The Spider-Man demo follows a similar mod from TJATOMICA that stars Superman and allows players to fly through the city as Superman would.

The Matrix Awakens: An Unreal Engine 5 Experience was released in December 2021, and is an impressive showcase that teases the potential of the new engine that is now available.

DF Direct Weekly on PS5 VRR, Steam Deck's 40Hz upgrade and 900W next-gen GPUs

1 year 11 months ago

It's been a barren few weeks for gaming and technology news, but it looks like things are finally picking up! John, Rich and Alex share initial findings on PlayStation 5 VRR, discuss Valve's new 40-60Hz display support for Steam Deck... and what to make of the PlayStation "Preservation Group"?

First up, the long-awaited arrival of variable refresh rate support, also known as VRR, on the PlayStation 5. This technology has long been part of the landscape on PC and Xbox, but makes its PlayStation debut this week. The idea here is smoothing out uneven frame delivery, eliminating screen tearing and judder without the heavy input lag penalty of traditional v-sync. Recent PS5 releases like Elden Ring have really underscored the need for the tech, so does this release put the PS5 on feature parity with the other platforms? As always, the devil is in the details, and our testing unearthed some unique quirks to the implementation that are worth discussing in a weekly gaming tech show.

Another big release comes in beta form for the Steam Deck: user-adjustable screen refresh rate support. Rather than opting for 60Hz, which the Steam Deck can't deliver in all titles, you can now manually set the refresh rate to anything between 40Hz and 60Hz, which makes it easier to ensure even frame delivery and therefore a visually smoother experience than a frame-rate that ping-pongs between 30 and 60. 40Hz is exactly between 30Hz and 60Hz when it comes to frame times (16.66ms -> 25ms -> 33.33ms), which is why we've seen it appear as an option in some Insomniac games on PS5, for instance.

Intel CEO Now Expects the Chip Shortage To Last Until 2024

1 year 11 months ago

Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger is anticipating that the chip shortage, which has been negatively impacting many industries including the games industry, will remain an issue well into 2024.

In a recent interview with CNBC, Gelsinger told the outlet that the chip shortage might drag on for two years due to the strain on key manufacturing tools. "[W]e believe the overall semiconductor shortage will now drift into 2024," Gelsinger told CNBC.

Gelsinger previously predicted several times that he expected the chip shortage to drag into 2023, with the first mention of it coming last July during the company's Q2 earnings call. In October 2021, he reiterated that the supply chain issues could extend into 2023.

Despite the chip shortage remaining an issue across various industries, Gelsinger noted how Intel's own chips are doing very well and are close to meeting the demand for its own chips, as he said during the company's Q1 2022 earnings call a few days ago.

Sony Hiring Corporate Development Director To Find ‘Growth Opportunities Through Acquisitions’

Forza Horizon Reappears On Xbox Store 6 Years After Being Delisted

1 year 11 months ago

Six years after being delisted, the original Forza Horizon made a brief reappearance on the Xbox Store on Saturday, according to a variety of Twitter users who managed to successfully access the popular Xbox 360 racing title.

Forza Horizon was initially delisted from all storefronts in 2016, but eagle-eyed fans reported the game showed up for $19.99 for a short while before disappearing again a few hours later. It's unknown whether the relisting is indication that Xbox is planning to bring the game back to the store or if someone at Xbox just made a mistake that caused it to pop back up for a little while.

Either way, the eventual removal of Forza games is a common practice for Microsoft, as the third party licensing deals run out for the series' wide selection of cars, tracks, songs, and more. In September 2021, Forza Motorsport 7 became the most recent game in the franchise to be delisted – 4 years after it was released on Xbox One.

Developer Turn10 is hard at work on an upcoming reboot of the mainline Forza Motorsport series, though news about the game has trickled out very slowly since its original reveal back in 2020. What we know so far is that it will act as a fresh start for the franchise, leveraging the power of the Xbox Series X – meaning that the game won't land on Xbox One. It will also launch on Xbox Game Pass on day one.

Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart Composer Wataru Hokoyama On Winning Awards, Writing Video Game Music, And More

1 year 11 months ago

Wataru Hokoyama has been composing and orchestrating scores for TV shows, films, and video games for decades. Thanks to the music he created for Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, alongside his mentor of six years, Mark Mothersbaugh, he’s now an official American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers awards winner.

That’s because Hokoyama has received the Video Game Score of the Year award for Rift Apart by way of the 2022 ASCAP Screen Music Awards. Of course, Mothersbaugh helped create the score as well, but he’s not with ASCAP, so the award, on paper, goes to Hokoyama alone. In a new interview with Game Informer, though, the composer, who also has credits on Thor: Ragnarok, Resident Evil 5, Knack, Halo Wars 2 and Halo 2: Anniversary, and more, said winning this award wouldn’t have been possible without Mothersbaugh. That’s because Mothersbaugh is the reason Hokoyama got the opportunity to score Rift Apart in the first place.
