What to Expect from Xbox in 2022

2 years 4 months ago

With the one-year anniversary of the Xbox Series X and S consoles, 20th birthday of the Xbox brand, release of the best-in-class Forza Horizon 5, AND the launch of the ridiculously fun Halo Infinite, Microsoft has had a lot to celebrate towards the end of 2021. Phil Spencer and friends won’t be keen to take the balloons down and end the party just yet though, and with a jam-packed 2022 ahead it’s easy to see why they’d want to keep the celebration going. Here’s what to expect from Microsoft and its host of Xbox Game Studios over the next 12 months.

Xbox Has Games

One way to keep momentum going is to focus on what gave Microsoft such a strong ending to 2021 - great games. And one element of the 2022 slate will be continuing support for those great games from 2021.

Halo is back and arguably better than ever, but the most exciting thing about Infinite is that it's only getting started. There’s so much more to come from Halo developer 343 in 2022, including the eagerly anticipated addition of co-op to the campaign, as well as the fan-favourite Forge mode. Multiplayer will of course be receiving regular updates, whether that be new maps, modes, or further improvements to the battle pass progression system that has been the only real mark against its name up until this point.

Forza Horizon 5 saw over 10 million players hoon it around Playground’s stunning depiction of Mexico within a week of its launch. The studio has a great track record of supplying a steady stream of high-quality DLC to previous Horizons so we can definitely expect to see some of that in the coming months.

Best Sports 2021 – Knockout City

2 years 4 months ago

best sports game 2021

When Knockout City was first announced earlier this year, I confused it with Rocket Arena, the other stylized 3-versus-3 third-person multiplayer game published by Electronic Arts in 2020. However, unlike the latter, Knockout City was highly praised by fans and critics alike when released earlier this year. And while it’s a rather unconventional pick for Game Informer’s Best Sports award, Velan Studios’ eccentric dodgeball game is an easy standout in a year when most sports franchises are coasting by. Persona 5 Strikers, Deep Rock Galactic, and Dirt 5 Featured In January 2022 PlayStation Plus Lineup

2 years 4 months ago

Update, 12/31/21:

PlayStation announced earlier this week that Deep Rock Galactic, as well as Persona 5 Strikers and Dirt 5, will be the January 2022 PlayStation Plus titles, and now, new details about one of the games have been released.

As first reported by VG247, Deep Rock Galactic will contain some PlayStation 5-exclusive features thanks to the console's DualSense controller. More specifically, the DualSense touchpad can be used to control the Terrain Scanner in-game. Plus, the controller's built-in speaker can be used by characters to tell you orders as if said characters are actually using a radio to communicate with you, as one might do when mining deep into an alien planet's terrain.

For more about the game, check out Game Informer's Deep Rock Galactic review

Original Story, 12/29/21:

Legendary NFL Coach & Broadcaster, John Madden, Passes Away at Age 85

2 years 4 months ago

Hall of Fame NFL coach and iconic broadcaster, John Madden, passed away last night at the age of 85. He was one of the most successful head coaches in NFL history during his time with the Raiders, and after his coaching career ended, he quickly became one of the U.S.’s most well-known and entertaining sports broadcasters frequenting both Sunday and Monday Night Football for many years.

Fans of gaming (and not necessarily football) will of course know him best as the namesake of the Madden NFL series of video games. Whether you are a fan of the series or not, there is no denying its staying power. It’s one of the longest-running and most successful video game series ever created with the first game going all the way back to 1988 when the first John Madden Football game was created, and also 1993 when the name would change to the game nearly all gamers in the U.S. are familiar with at this point, Madden NFL ’94 for the Sega Genesis and SNES.

The series continues on to this day under the tutelage of EA, the original publishers of the first-ever game. EA Sports’ Twitter account released a statement that you can read below:

The Witcher Netflix’s Kim Bodnia Talks Playing Vesemir in New Mini-Featurette

2 years 4 months ago

Netflix’s The Witcher adaptation launched its second season earlier this month, and it’s proven as wildly successful as the first. A large part of the appeal for both new and returning fans is the introduction of several important characters absent from the first series, including Vesemir, the leader of the witcher guild. He’s played by Danish Kim Bodnia (Killing Eve).

“I always love to see these worlds where magic and nature is so integrated into the storytelling,” Bodnia explains in a new mini-featurette published by Netflix today which introduces Vesemir’s role in the story of season 2.

Check out the full sequence below.

As noted by TheWrap, the 142.4 million hours viewed was nearly three times the next most-viewed TV show, “Money Heist,” which logged 55 million hours viewed in Netflix’s weekly viewership rankings.

Still, Twinfinite wasn’t necessarily pleased with some of the decision-making behind the show’s storytelling; features editor Andrew McMahon recently wrote about his frustration with the handling of Eskel, which you can read here.

PlayStation Plus Games for January 2022 Announced

2 years 4 months ago

Sony has announced that Persona 5 Strikers, Dirt 5, and Deep Rock Galactic are the PlayStation Plus games for January 2022.

Announced on PlayStation.Blog, these three games will all be available on Tuesday, January 4 until Tuesday, February 1, and are the first PlayStation Plus games for the new year.

PS4's Persona 5 Strikers is a spin-off that stars Persona 5's Phantom Thieves and picks up just a few months after the end of the original game (sorry Persona 5 Royal fans!). Instead of featuring turn-based combat, the action in Persona 5 Strikers is focused on combo-driven hacking and slashing that is somewhat similar to a musou game, but not quite.

In our Persona 5 Strikers review, we said that its "main story is every bit the direct sequel to Persona 5 that it seems, making this summer road trip with the Phantom Thieves essential for fans of the original (and probably pretty confusing for anybody who hasn't played it)."

Batman: Arkham Asylum's Titan Joker Is Transforming Into A McFarlane Toys Action Figure

2 years 4 months ago

New Batman comic books release each week, and we are also frequently treated to new movies and animated shows that put the Caped Crusader in the spotlight. With so much new Batman material to pull from, it's amazing that toy manufacturers are still turning to 2009's Batman: Arkham Asylum video game for new action figures.

McFarlane Toys is the latest company to create an awesome (and terrifying) figure from this dark game. Falling into McFarlane's DC Multiverse line, fans will soon be able to get their hands on the monstrous and hulking Titan Joker action figure. If you played the game, you know The Joker ingested a chemical compound called Titan to try take down Batman. That plan didn't go so well, which becomes a plot point for the sequels.

McFarlane shared a first look at this mega-scale figure on Instagram:

Yoko Taro Is Possibly, Maybe Finished With Nier

2 years 4 months ago

Yoko Taro is known as the mastermind behind the Nier series (and its predecessor, Drakenguard) though he may be putting the former behind him for good. The eccentric game director with the bizarro mask has teased that he’s putting Nier behind him for good.

In a holiday message recorded on December 22, Taro, along with Nier producer Yosuke Saito and series composer Keiichi Okabe, discussed the last year as well as the sales success of Nier Replicant ver. 1.22474487139 (which has pushed past a million copies, according to the team). The update comes off as a friendly chat between old friends, as they bounce between discussing traveling abroad to meet fans, want they want for Christmas, and complaining about shoulder problems.

But when Saito asks Taro if he has anything new to share regarding the Nier series, Taro bluntly replies “Nah, nothing!” When Saito asks if he’s fine with not doing anything more with YoRHa, Taro half-jokingly declares “We announced it here today folks! The Nier series is now finished!”  You can watch the video by clicking the embedded tweet below.

Game Informer first reported on December 29 that Fortnite was down due to server issues and after several hours of the battle royale being offline, Epic Games pushed it back online. They promised rewards to compensate for the downtime, too. The company didn't announce at the time what those rewards would be, but the official Fortnite Twitter account revealed what we can expect today.

"As thanks for everyone's patience during the December login issues, we'll be kicking off a Power Leveling Weekend from [7 p.m. ET on January 7 to 7 a.m. ET on January 10] and granting everyone who logged in during Winterfest the new Crescent Shroom Pickaxe before it arrives in the Shop later."

Sisi Jiang’s Top Ten Games of 2021

2 years 4 months ago

I’m not an accommodating video game critic. A game either sinks its hooks into me within the first hour, or I immediately bounce to something else. I’ve never had any patience for this “it gets good after ten hours” nonsense. A game either understands its own brilliance, or it doesn’t. And only titles that fearlessly…

Genshin Impact's Subreddit Was Reddit's Most-Viewed Community in 2021

2 years 4 months ago

Reddit's 2021 recap is out, and based on its data report it looks like Redditors really loved Genshin Impact, Final Fantasy 14, League of Legends, and Grand Theft Auto role-play in 2021.

The most-viewed community for the year was r/genshin_impact, followed by r/leagueoflegends, and then the general gaming hub r/gaming. In fourth place was r/rpclipsgta, a subreddit dedicated to "everything GTA [role-play] related," followed by r/ffxiv, which likely thrived thanks to the anticipation and ultimate release of the Final Fantasy 14: Endwalker expansion in December.

Related to GTA role-playing, Reddit's roundup notes that r/NoPixel -- a subreddit dedicated to a specific GTA RP server -- saw a 267% increase in views year over year. Other subreddits with massive spikes in 2021 included r/pokemonunite (with subscribers up a whopping 8,600% year over year thanks to Unite's launch in July), r/deltarune (subscribers up 328,000% thanks to a new chapter release in September) and r/biomutant (subscribers up 9,500% from last year).

2 years 4 months ago

Following the Halo Infinite cat ear DLC, the sci-fi shooter has now added "Mister Chief" cosmetics. There are seven items in all included with the DLC bundle, which costs 2,000 credits.

The items include a weapon charm, vehicle decal, and a new AI model, among other things. You can see some of the bundle contents in the image below, shared by developer 343.

Mister Chief is a popular Halo meme created by Halo boss Frank O'Connor, depicting the popular Halo hero in a new, more comical light. Like Halo Infinite's previous cosmetic DLC releases, people are also criticizing the new Mister Chief cosmetics for being overpriced.

League Of Legends Studio Riot Announces $100 Million Settlement In Gender Discrimination Case

2 years 4 months ago

League of Legends developer Riot Games has announced it will pay $100 million to settle a gender discrimination lawsuit. The original settlement was $10 million but new lawyers were hired and pushed for a much bigger payout, which is now coming to fruition.

The settlement funds will be provided to more than 2,000 former and current female employees at Riot. Women's rights attorney Genie Harrison, who argued on behalf of the workers, told The New York Times that the settlement terms are fair and that she feels proud to have worked on the case.

"I'm very pleased that we were able to provide what I think is a fair settlement," she said.

The Los Angeles Superior Court still needs to approve the settlement. If that goes through, it could send a message to California companies that all industries in the state need to provide "equal pay and workplaces free from discrimination and harassment," Kevin Kish of the California Department of Fair Employment and Housing told the site.

According to NYT, more than 1,000 full-time employees and 1,300 contractors who worked at Riot as early as November 2014 will share $80 million, with $20 million set aside to cover legal fees and other costs. Riot Games will also put money into a diversity and inclusion program, with a third-party audit will be conducted to provide an "analysis of gender equity in employee pay and job assignments."

Riot Games said in a statement, "We believe this is the right thing to do, for both the company and those whose experiences at Riot fell short of our standards and values."

Alan Wake Studio Remedy Signs Deal With Tencent For Its First Games-As-A-Service Title

2 years 4 months ago

Alan Wake studio Remedy is staying very busy. In addition to Alan Wake 2, the studio has now announced a big deal with Tencent for its upcoming free-to-play shooter Vanguard.

Remedy and Tencent have announced a deal covering "global development, license, and distribution" of the new IP. Little is known about Vanguard, but Remedy says it's a co-op PvE shooter that makes the most of Remedy's "narrative expertise and action gameplay" to create an "immersive multiplayer experience."

"The game is developed with the Unreal Engine for PC and console platforms. Remedy will develop and publish the game worldwide, excluding selected Asian markets, where Tencent will localize and publish the game," Remedy said in its announcement.

Vanguard is in the "proof-of-concept phase" of development, and Remedy said the budget for the game through the end of its first year will be "in the range of a typical Remedy AAA game budget."

Development will be co-funded by Remedy and Tencent, and Tencent will cover the costs of localizing Vanguard for Asian markets.

"Remedy and Tencent will be responsible for their own publishing and game operating costs in their respective territories while sharing a portion of revenue to the other party after the recoupment of the development costs," Remedy said.

Additionally, Tencent has sold the global rights to a mobile version of Vanguard to Tencent, which will cover the expenses of developing and publishing the mobile edition.

Vanguard is Remedy's first games-as-a-service title, and Remedy CEO Tero Virtala said in a statement that this is an exciting time for the company.

Too Kyo Games Working on a Project So Crazy They Don’t Know if They Can Finish It

2 years 4 months ago

Too Kyo Games knows how to turn heads by releasing some pretty crazy and creative games, which isn’t surprising considering that the studio includes the creators of Danganronpa and Zero Escape.

Said creators took part in an extensive article published by Japanese website 4Gamer, in which local developers shared their plans for next year.

While Danganronpa creator Kazutaka Kodaka and Zero Escape creator Kotaro Uchikoshi talked about projects we already know about, including Tribe Nine, Enigma Archives: Rain Code, and AI: The Somnium Files – nirvanA Initiative, an interesting tease came from another perhaps lesser-known (but no less relevant) member of the team, Takumi Nakazawa.

Nakazawa-san mentioned that the studio has a number of games that have not been announced yet, including one that’s a “too-crazy” challenge that he doesn’t know if it can be properly completed.

If his name doesn’t ring a bell, recently he directed World’s End Club, and further in the past he has written and directed quite a few famous visual novels, including Memories Off and Memories Off 2nd.
