Persona and Shin Megami Tensei Developer Atlus Hopes to Release a 'Pillar' Game in 2022

2 years 4 months ago

Next year, Persona and Shin Megami Tensei developer Atlus would like to release a new game that will further solidify the company's status as a premier Japanese studio.

As reported by Gematsu, Famitsu asked several video game companies about their goals and ambitions for 2022 as this year draws to an end, and Atlus' Shinjiro Takada had some exciting things to say for fans of the studio's games.

Takada - who is responsible for such franchises as Shin Megami Tensei and Etrian Odyssey - says, "I chose ‘Challenge’ as my keyword for 2022 in hopes to release a title to the world that will become a pillar for Atlus." He continues, "The staff are working hard on development to make something that’ll be interesting and satisfying for everyone, so I’d be happy if you could look forward to it.”

Currently, we know of three projects that Atlus is working on. A port of Persona 4 Arena Ultimax was announced at The Game Awards 2021 and is launching on March 17, 2022, for PC, PS4, and Nintendo Switch. Additionally, 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim is launching for Nintendo Switch on April 22, 2022; it was originally released on PS4 in 2020. The last one is Project Re Fantasy, which is being led by a new development team called Studio Zero. It was revealed back in 2016, but not much information about the game has been shown yet.

What to Expect From PlayStation in 2022

2 years 4 months ago

The first full year of the PS5 was a busy one, with exclusives, firmware updates, and studio acquisitions, and sustained support for the PS4 through new, cross-gen releases.

While it was a busy year for PlayStation, 2022 is looking to be even busier, as delays pushed some of Sony’s biggest exclusives - as well as major third-party releases - into the new year. There’s also a question of when PlayStation’s next-gen PSVR will be announced, and how Sony will approach events in a continually evolving and changing pandemic world. So with 2021 largely behind us, let’s look ahead to what’s in store for PlayStation in 2022.

Exclusive Games in 2022

PlayStation is synonymous with marquee exclusives, both from its suite of internal studios, which has recently expanded, as well as launch exclusives from various third-parties. 2021 was no slouch in either category, but 2022 is bringing with it some long-awaited sequels to some of PlayStation’s biggest franchises.

Development of Atlus’ Project Re Fantasy Finally Reaching Climax According to Katsura Hashino

2 years 4 months ago

Among the games in development at Atlus, Project Re Fantasy, the new high fantasy JRPG directed by Katsura Hashino of Persona 5 fame, remains mysterious after several years since its announcement. Yet, there may be light at the end of the tunnel.

Today Japanese website 4Gamer published an extensive article in which local developers shared their plans for 2022.

Hashino-san himself was among them, and he mentioned that while various games of existing series have been recently released by the company, 2022 marks the beginning of a period in which they’ll be able to develop completely new games. On top of that, he admitted that the development of Project Re Fantasy has been affected by some twists and turns, but it’s finally reaching its climax.

We also hear from Shin Megami Tensei V producer Shinjiro Takada, who mentioned that his aspiration for 2022 is to create a game that will serve as a pillar for Atlus.

Project Re Fantasy has been announced all the way back in 2016, but for now, we have seen only a few pieces of artwork by acclaimed character designer Shigenori Soejima and some concept videos.

We also know that the music is composed by Shoji Meguro, who in the meanwhile has left Atlus, but will still work for the developer as a freelancer

It’ll be interesting to see if 2022 will finally bring a reveal, but for now, we’ll have to wait and see.

Best Racing Game Of 2021: Forza Horizon 5

2 years 4 months ago

As a series, Forza Horizon has been on a roll for some time. After visiting Australia in the third installment and touring Great Britain in the fourth, we’ve known for some time that the newest and fifth entry in the long-running racer would transport us to the idyllic environs of Mexico. But it wasn’t until we got the final game in our hands that it became clear; Playground Games has gone above and beyond, crafting one of the best looking new-gen games on the market, and filling it with some of the most entertaining racing experiences in memory.

A good opener can go a long way to setting a game’s tone, and Forza Horizon 5 nails the landing – both figuratively and literally. In a rollicking opening sequence, one vehicle after another goes parachuting out from a cargo plane, dropping into various locales across Mexico. In just a few short minutes, the game makes a case for its tremendous potential, showing off everything from muddy offroad races through rivers and jungles, to blazing street races in supercars most of us will never drive in real life. [UPDATE] Hideo Kojima Hints At Working On Two Upcoming Games

2 years 4 months ago

Hideo Kojima ended up tweeting his 2022 plans a week after the release of the Famitsu's New Year's ambitions feature, only this time he's clarified some of what he may be working on. Kojima Tweeted this on January 1, saying, "This year, I'm going to start a new work in earnest, and move to the next level of experimentation with a radical project. I'm also hoping to get the video team going. And I may start doing something like a radio project?"

So, Hideo looks to be working on four main projects in different levels of development and progress. Two of which appear to be games or at least games-related in the "new work" he's beginning, and the "radical project" that's evolving more this year. The other two, though, are happening in the video and audio space, both of which I can see the Metal Gear director relishing the opportunity to work within. Hopefully, this isn't the last time we hear of these plans in the coming months. I can't wait to see what kind of ideas Kojima has cooking that he considers "radical."

You can read the tweet below and catch a glimpse at some potentially new artwork featuring the phrase "From Sapiens to Ludens," referencing Kojima Production's mascot.

Microsoft Flight Simulator F-35 Gets Release Details; Twin Otter & Mustang Get New Screenshots; Chicago Midway Airport Released

2 years 4 months ago

Third-party developers shared news about relevant aircraft addons coming to Microsoft Flight Simulator, while an airport has been released.

First of all, IndiaFoxtEcho announced that the F-35 Lightning II will be released on PC in the first days of 2022, followed by launch on the official marketplace and Xbox sometime later.

They also shared several release details and the manual, which can be downloaded here.

XBOX AND MARKETPLACE RELEASES – The current plan is to send the aircraft to the distributors in the very first days of 2022, although we know some of the editing teams will be on vacation.

As for the Marketplace release (including XBOX) it may take a little longer for two reasons:Microsoft validation and ingestion process can take anything from 1 to 3/4 weeks

The package has been built with 1.21.18 build (SU7 UPDATE PREVIEW), while the public release is 1.21.13. Microsoft does not process packages built for a version newer than the public release, but unfortunately 1.21.13 is not a version we can work with, as there is a bug in the package building tool which makes working with complex aircrafts extremely difficult.

FURTHER TESTING – in the past few days we have continued testing the F-35, and we have also received support from the Microsoft testing team. The F-35 seems to work fine, and the occasional CTDs have been confirmed, once again, not to be specifically related to the aircraft.

Halo Infinite's Grapple Shot Is A Game Changer

2 years 4 months ago

Master Chief is one of gaming's most iconic figures. Standing at roughly seven feet in height and weighing nearly 1,000 pounds, he has the stature of a superhero. His exploits on the battlefield back up his size – a one-man army capable of turning the tide of war. We've seen how resourceful and powerful he can be in story sequences and advertisements, but many of those dynamic actions don't cross over to when the player controls him. He can swing big hammers, pilot any vehicle, and run and gun with swift grace, but so can most combatants in the game. Prior Halo gameplay hasn't made him look like the super soldier we envision. Enter the grapple shot, a new gadget in Halo Infinite that adds dynamic layers to this series' beloved combat and makes Master Chief look like a gun-toting superhero.

The grapple shot's most basic use gives Master Chief a boost in mobility. Fired from an arm-mounted device, the grapple rockets through the air a good 40 to 50 feet, and the second it connects to a surface, pulls Master Chief forward with just as much speed. Master Chief can use this device to reach heights he never could. He can also use it much like Spider-Man swinging on a web line to cover ground faster. Once the grapple connects with an object – like a tree, for example – Master Chief can cut the connection mid-movement to propel himself forward a great distance. If he doesn't cut it, he will be pulled to the grapple point, which usually allows him to grab onto a ledge to climb up.

Echo Generation Is A Cozy, Comfy Holiday Game

2 years 4 months ago

2021 has been filled with a ton of great games, with high-profile titles and hidden gems both in abundance. However, there’s one that might be a perfect fit for your comfy holiday play sessions. It’s a turn-based RPG that’s got some adventure and puzzle elements with a bit of humor and a cozy aesthetic. That’s right, we’re talking about Echo Generation, which is also available on Game Pass, so if you’re not sure you’re interested, that’s a great way to give it a shot and see.

Click here to watch embedded media

Echo Generation, in a nutshell, is a burrito of homecooked 80s and 90s love.  So yeah, it’s basically Stranger Things meets Earthbound, with a fun turn-based combat system that’s more like Paper Mario or South Park: The Stick of Truth. In combat, you not only control the two main characters of the story as they use axes, ninja shurikens, and alien laser weapons, but you also get a cool pet to take along with the crew. There are a number of interesting companions to find and unlock over the course of the game, including a rapping raccoon and a curious cat. For all the abilities you execute, you’ll need to find a comic book to learn the sweet skill first.

Ari's Top Ten Games Of 2021

2 years 4 months ago

Last year, when allocating my top 10 games of 2020, I thought I’d be cheeky. See, Hades, which officially hit PC and Switch in September 2020, was so transcendent I simply had to give it all ten spots. Supergiant’s eternally popular roguelike saw a PlayStation and Xbox release this year, so it’s technically a 2021…

Remedy Partners With Tencent For Multiplayer Game Codnamed Vanguard

2 years 4 months ago

Remedy's recent dealings with Epic Games haven't stopped the developer from making moves elsewhere in the industry. It's been revealed in a communication to investors that Remedy Games has developed a relationship with Tencent for a global license, development, and distribution deal for a new cooperative multiplayer game currently codenamed Vanguard.

Vanguard is said to be a free-to-play, co-op, PvE shooter that's an IP owned by Remedy and will combine "Remedy’s narrative expertise and action gameplay into an immersive multiplayer experience." The deal will apparently have Tencent localize and publish the game for "selected Asian markets," while Remedy will handle development and distribution globally in other territories. It also allows Tencent the license to create a mobile version that the two entities have "agreed on a separate revenue sharing scheme for.

Here's Remedy Entertainment CEO, Tero Virtala's statement on the partnership:
