Cozy brewing simulation Potion Craft enters early access this month

2 years 8 months ago

Witch shop game Potion Craft is ready to open for business this month. I'll admit right now that I've already played two different versions of Potion Craft so far this year and I'm well up for being experimented on again. The rather neat crafting and haggling game is going the early access route, taking time to expand the shop simulation elements while adding in new ingredients and potion effects for you to discover and unlock. It's headed to early access on September 21st and you can hop in to try the demo again until the 17th.

Letter From The Editor #02: hellos, goodbyes and some reintroductions

2 years 8 months ago

Hello folks. Hope you've all been keeping well. It's been another busy month here at RPS, wot with Gamescom and Geoff Keighley's megamix taking over the internet for a spell. But we've also had a few big changes of our own in recent weeks, which I'd thought I'd relay to you here in my second Letter From The Editor, available to all RPS supporters. We've had a couple of new faces join the team over the last month, new powers granted to some of our behind-the-scenes staff and, sadly, we've also got one, very imminent departure - all of which I'll explain below.

Beacon Pines has a demo for its Mad Libs-like mystery adventure

2 years 8 months ago

Don't let the very pretty face of Beacon Pines fool you. Underneath its storybook aesthetic is an adventure game with a decent dose of scares and swears from its small town twelve-year-old protagonists. In the short demo for Beacon Pines, you can try out the ways that it mixes book-based adventure games with classic computer adventure games in its Mad Lib-like story puzzles. It's definitely been good for a chuckle or two just in the 30 minutes I've spent with it. You can try it yourself through Tuesday.

What We Want From The Dead Space Remake

2 years 8 months ago

So you want to make a Dead Space remake, EA? That's great! It's a beloved horror franchise, and honestly, we were all getting worried that you had forgotten about it. But can we trust you to recapture the magic of the original, because some of us still haven't gotten over Dead Space 3's release. To make things easier on developer Motive Studios, we compiled a list of five things that the Dead Space remake must nail to succeed.

Think horror first

Dead Space has an extraordinary sci-fi world, and the original game was full of incredible action, puzzles, and set-piece moments. However, horror is the most essential aspect of Dead Space's identity. The original Dead Space nailed the isolating atmosphere of films like Alien and Event Horizon. Whether we were dodging the writhing tentacles of a baby necromorph, stopping to listen to the creeks of a massive derelict spaceship, or running through an engine room in a panic as alarms drowned the sound of approaching enemies, the original Dead Space played our heart like a fiddle. You probably can't repeat all those tricks and expect the same results, but we'd love to see you try Motive.

The Tragedy Of Hawke, Dragon Age 2's Schrodinger's Hero

2 years 8 months ago

Dragon Age 2 did many things right – and many things wrong – but one thing that stands out the most to me is the tragedy that is Hawke. In many stories where there is a hero at the heart of the tale, that hero goes through Hell and back to become a shining beacon of triumph and prosperity. For Hawke, however, each win came with ten losses behind it, ultimately leaving them to be one of the most heartbreaking protagonists in gaming to date.

When we first meet Hawke in Dragon Age 2, they are a humble farmer from Lothering whose life is suddenly upended due to the ravaging Blight seen in Dragon Age Origins. Escaping a simple life alongside their mother, Leandra Amell - a former noble that left the "good life" behind to find love with her apostate husband, Malcolm - and their two siblings, twins named Bethany and Carver, the first loss ends up being one of many. When escaping the hordes of monsters thirsting for destruction, Hawke and their family experience their second loss following the death of Malcolm some years before. Depending on which playable class the player chooses, either Bethany or Carver will be crushed to death by a vicious ogre. It's a startling way to begin any game, but what's worse is this is one of the easier horrors that this family will face.

Charming Storybook Adventure Game Beacon Pines Is Coming to Switch & PC in “First Half of 2022”

2 years 8 months ago

As part of this week’s Indie House Direct, US-based indie developer Hiding Spot Games has announced that their charming and cutesy storybook adventure title, Beacon Pines, will be heading to Nintendo Switch and PC in the “first half of 2022.”

Beacon Pines is a narrative-focused experience that blends the vibe and tone of Stranger Things, Undertale and Winnie The Pooh, and moulds it into an eerie tale centered around a perplexing smalltown mystery. The game recently smashed its $30,000 Kickstarter goal. As it stands, Beacon Pines has managed to net $84,548 from 2,782 backers. Not too shabby, eh?

In addition to the newly confirmed release window, the title has officially signed to indie publisher Fellow Traveller Games.

For those unfamiliar with the game, feel free to check out Beacon Pines’ announcement trailer from earlier this year down below:

Get Away From It All With Lake

2 years 8 months ago

I spent the last week leaving my job working in technology and traveling back to my lakeside hometown to deliver mail. It was every bit as uneventful as you might expect.

Lake is a strange game. Built as a story-driven experience, it nonetheless firmly refuses to tell much of a story. It’s an open world where you freely drive a vehicle around, but built-in safety measures keep you from ever bumping into pedestrians or going too far off-road, ensuring you're always a law-abiding citizen. Lake is also about characters and dialogue choices, but the decisions you make are so low-drama as to barely matter most of the time. And yet, against all odds, Lake is also a surprisingly intriguing and amusing affair.

Players step into the shoes of Meredith Weiss, a middle-aged software developer in 1986 who heads back to her tiny hometown to deliver mail in place of her father, who is taking a well-deserved vacation after his years in the postman’s truck. As Meredith, you must deliver mail, catch up with people you haven’t seen since childhood, and find something to occupy your evenings, like reading a book, watching TV, or getting together with a friend.

Atelier Sophie Getting Summery Figure Designed by Noco from Amakuni & AmiAmi

2 years 8 months ago

While the Atelier series has started to receive tons of figures with Atelier Ryza, Japanese manufacturers aren’t forgetting older installments, like Atelier Sophie: The Alchemist of the Mysterious Book.

Manufacturer Amakuni and retailer AmiAmi have teamed up to create a summery figure of heroine Sophie Neuenmuller herself, designed by character designer Noco.

The figure is available for pre-order at AmiAmi for 18,800 yen, which translates into approximately $171.

While she’s perfect for the summer, you won’t receive it during the warm months, as the shipment window is in November 2022.

She is sculpted in 1:7 scale for 22 cm in height by Ryuntaro (RyunRyunTei), with the paintwork for the prototype done by Emi Hoshina.

You can check out what she looks like in the gallery below.

Nihon Falcom's 40 Years of RPG Glory

2 years 8 months ago

Founded in March 1981, Nihon Falcom is one of the oldest active video game studios. Celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, the company helped pioneer the action-RPG genre, shaping both the JRPG industry and PC gaming scene in Japan. These days, Falcom is best known for its iconic Ys and Trails franchises. While only recently attracting more attention in the West, the studio has retained a strong reputation in Japan, often cited alongside juggernaut Square Enix as one of the most influential and distinguished RPG developers. To honor four decades in the business, we chatted with Nihon Falcom president Toshihiro Kondo to reminisce about the company’s history.

Nihon Falcom’s roots are very much in the PC scene; the Falcom name even nods to it. For the moniker, founder Masayuki Kato was inspired by Star Wars’ Millennium Falcon, but he changed ‘con’ to ‘com’ to represent the company’s focus on computer gaming. The studio’s first game, Panorama Toh, hit in 1983, with Yoshio Kiya at the helm. Kiya would later go on to create Falcom’s popular and influential Dragon Slayer and Brandish franchises.

Melty Blood: Type Lumina Gets New Gameplay Video: Shiki Tohno Gets a Rematch Against Ciel

2 years 8 months ago

Type-moon released a brand new trailer of its upcoming fighting game Melty Blood: Type Lumina, which will soon launch both in Japan and in the west.

Last week, the developer released a video showing a match in which Ciel won against Shiki Tohono. Today we see another one, but Shiki gets a rematch.

You can check it out below.

Here’s how the developers describe Ciel.

“The Holy Church, a major religion in Europe, does not take kindly to heresy.
Ciel works as an executor for its specialized force known as the Burial Agency.
Her calling? Hunting and destroying heretics in the name of the Lord.

Like Arcueid, she wishes to destroy her mortal enemy and has come to Souya in search of him, deciding to blend in by posing as a regular student at the same high school as Shiki.

She currently attends school as a senior, one year above Shiki, and is quite popular with many of the students there.
They see her as both warm and cheerful.

Her go-to lunch from the school shop is curry bread, and her favorite restaurant serves the best curry in town.”

Fortnite: Where To Place Warning Signs - Season 7 Week 14 Quest

2 years 8 months ago

Fortnite is entering the final week of Season 7, and you'll need to place warning signs this week in order to complete one of the last Legendary Quests of the season. There are a few places where you can do this, and we'll show you each of them so you can decide which route makes the most sense for you. This challenge will go live on Wednesday, September 8 at 7 AM PT / 10 AM ET.

Fortnite: Where To Place Warning Signs

There are three towns in which you can place warning signs, and each town offers multiple spots for you to perform the task. Given that you need to place four warning signs in total, you could complete this challenge by only visiting one location if you're really efficient. We'll still show you all the spots though, just in case it takes multiple tries or you have to book it out of one region simply to survive the round.

Let's start in Misty Meadows. There are three signs with which you can interact in this location. You can find them:

  • Just off the northern road by the coffee shop
  • In front of the deli at the end of the same road
  • Outside the covered picnic area beside the clock tower
Warning signs in Misty Meadows

If your travels take you instead to Dirty Docks, you can find four signs there too. Look for warning signs:
