Latest Marvel Studio’s Loki Trailer Teases the God of Mischief’s New Role in the MCU

Disney+ continues its expansion of the Marvel Connected Universe this year with an all-new show centered around one of its most popular villains. June 11 will mark the start of a six-part Loki story arc in which the titular protagonist will begrudgingly work alongside the Time Variance Authority, as teased in a new trailer today.

As you’ll see, Loki, played once again by Tom Hiddlestone, appears to have been captured by the TVA, led by Mobius (Owen Wilson) and forced to work with them in their plight to ensure the proper flow of time, which we learn was disrupted by Loki when he used the Tesseract to escape in Avengers: Endgame.

If you’re wondering, this isn’t the same Loki that went through the events of the Thor movies, and so he’s a much more antagonistic version of the character who hasn’t reformed in the same way as the other timeline. Therefore, it’s almost a fresh slate for the character in terms of what we know about him — I’d say it’s safe to assume we can expect plenty of mischief!

The big question is how Marvel sets up Loki to impact the future of the Marvel movies moving forward after the events of Endgame, which were obviously apocalyptic.

Here’s the trailer:

The Largest Working Nintendo Switch In The World Was Donated To A Children’s Hospital

Michael Pick, an engineer that documents his electronics-based DIY projects on YouTube, just posted a new video where he creates the world’s largest working Nintendo Switch. In the past, Pick uploaded videos about creating tiny PCs and inexpensive Tetris gaming rigs, but his latest effort is definitely his most impressive. And once the Switch was finished, Pick donated the hulking console to a children’s hospital!

Click here to watch embedded media

The video above runs a little over four minutes, but you can tag along and watch Pick’s entire process. “I really like the Nintendo Switch,” Pick says during the opening seconds of the video. “It’s small, it’s portable, but it’s really easy to lose and for me, that was a problem...so I decided to fix that by making something that was a little bit larger, and just a little bit harder to lose.”

Here’s Oddworld: Soulstorm’s PS4-To-PS5 Upgrade Path And PC Requirements

Oddworld: Soulstorm launches this week, April 6 but it was recently revealed that the PlayStation 5 version of the game will be free on PS Plus at launch and throughout the entire month. PlayStation 4 owners might feel a bit slighted at their current gen brethren getting the game for “free,” so developer Oddworld Inhabitants announced a free path from PS4 to PS5.

If you buy Oddworld: Soulstorm on PS4, take solace in knowing that you’ll be able to upgrade to the PS5 version for free. That applies to those buying the physical version of the game; you’ll get the digital PS5 version at no extra cost. Keep in mind that the disc version won’t be available in stores until July 6.

Conversely, those who pick up Soulstorm for current gen while it's free on PS Plus will not get the PS4 version along with it. For those unaware, purchasing multiplatform games on PS5 usually gets you the last-gen version of it too as a separate download. For a glimpse at how the game looks on PS5, check out the trailer from Sony's September PS5 showcase here

Marvel Studios Debuts A Mischievous New Loki Trailer

If you can’t get enough of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, 2021 has been a good year for you. WandaVision wrapped up with a bang, The Falcon and The Winter Soldier is currently in swing, and Black Widow reemerged with a new trailer and summer release date. Loki is the next Disney+ show scheduled to begin after Falcon wraps up and Marvel has decided to give an early peek into what the God of Mischief is up to in a tantalizing new trailer.

Loki takes place following Avengers: Endgame and catches up with 2012-era Loki after he escapes with the tesseract/space stone. He runs afoul of The Time Variance Authority, who in Marvel Comics is an organization responsible for monitoring the multiverse and making sure that no one fiddles with the timelines too much (sometimes). The TVA isn’t too pleased with Loki using the space stone to manipulate time, so they capture Loki and force him to fix reality under the supervision of manager Mobius M. Mobius (played by Owen Wilson).

Monster Hunter Rise hits five million units shipped, and is already a platinum seller for the company

Monster Hunter Rise is selling extremely well pretty much everywhere, and now it hit another milestone: five million shipped globally. As a reminder, this is just on Switch, as it's exclusive to Nintendo's platform at the moment.

Capcom has confirmed the new number as of this morning, noting that this is part of the 66 million in sales that the series has reached overall. Accounting for Monster Hunter: World's 16.8 million units, these two games alone have basically made up a third of the entire franchise sales figures.

But circling back to the big picture a bit, with five million shipped, Monster Hunter Rise is already part of the respectable "top 10 platinum title" club, a list joined by Monster Hunter: World, RE7, RE2 (remake), RE5, RE6, Monster Hunter World: Iceborne, SFII, SFV, and RE2. The addition of Rise has knocked Monster Hunter Freedom 3 out of the top 10.

Also, on the same landing page, Capcom reconfirms that the game is set to debut on PC in "early 2022." So if you think about it, it only has up to go from here. Rise is about to take on Street Fighter V for the eighth overall spot, and will likely beat out Street Fighter II in a matter of time.

E3 2021 will not hide any content behind a paywall, insists ESA

The Entertainment Software Association (ESA) has addressed reports that it will be hiding content from its upcoming E3 2021 experience behind a "Premium Package" paywall, which was rumored to be offering demos and other content for an "entrance" fee of sorts.

News outlet VGC originally reported that it had spoken with sources within the industry who had indeed been offered a "paid access" E3 experience. But following the publishing of said report, The ESA contacted VGC - and also took to social media - to declare that "that there will be no elements at E3 2021 that will be behind a paid-for pass or paywall." and that everyone will be able to tune into the online event free-of-charge.

2021 is a vital year from the long-running industry show. E3 has been held annually in Los Angeles since 1995, and for decades has been considered the premier industry show. But the modern proliferation of the internet, the rise of social media, and the simplicity of live streaming has led many major publishers to hold their own showcases online, away from the hustle and bustle of the event.

There's a Metroid Prime demake in the works, and it has a demo

Metroid Prime is a classic. I don't think that's up for debate. It just is.

Nintendo thinks so! Which is why they released it again years later in trilogy form on the Wii after its GameCube debut in 2002. But ever since that 2009 Wii edition, the series has remained dormant. I mean, there's allegedly another one in the works! But that could be years away at this point. Enter the fandom.

There's still a huge collective rallying around the Metroid franchise at large, as well as the Prime series. One of those groups managed to craft a demake of Metroid Prime, which is now available in demo form. Said demo entails the Tallon Overworld, Artifact Temple, and the Chozo Ruins, but the team "needs to spend more time" working on it to expand upon that setup.

The demo itself is the result of five years of work from "Team SCU." Presumably to avoid legal issues, the team is calling this project "Prime 2D," though I'm not sure that will be sufficient if Nintendo really wants to nail this.

Since I'm inevitably going to get the "thanks Destructoid, you personally emailed Nintendo to get this shut down!" messages, I'll note here that the project creators put up a public post for the demo, and "Let's Plays" are already on YouTube (like the one below), one of the world's largest video platforms, for public viewing. The "secret" is out!

The rebellion returns: Oddworld Soulstorm hopes to reinvent a classic

Tomorrow sees the return of one of gaming's weirdest and quirkiest franchises. It's been a long time coming, but Oddworld: Soulstorm will see brave Mudokan Abe stand against impossible odds to save his people from slave labor at the greasy hands of the Glukkons.

Developer Oddworld Inhabitants has released a quadrilogy of videos, focusing on various elements of Oddworld: Soulstorm. From the stealth gameplay and "follower management" of previous titles, to new looting and crafting mechanics. The four videos offer fans a taste of the epic adventure to come. Described as a "re-take" of 1998's Abe's Exoddus, Soulstorm is a fresh sequel to the franchise's original release, Abe's Oddysee, and will follow Abe and his friends as they continue their quest for liberation.

Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis Is Such a Big Upgrade it Feels Like a Full Sequel

I’ve been a fan of the Phantasy Star series since the 90s when I grew up binging the single-player JRPGs on my Sega Genesis. In fact, Phantasy Star IV is still one of my all-time favorite RPGs. So needless to say I was pretty excited to learn we’d be getting more brand-new Phantasy Star Online content just a year after Phantasy Star Online 2 finally released in the West after eight years of Japan-only exclusivity. Based on the title, Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis absolutely sounds like a spin-off, expansion, or next-generation port of some kind—especially since it still has the number ‘2’ in the title. In reality, it’s none of those things, it’s something bigger—but still not technically a sequel.

Whole New World

[ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/07/23/phantasy-star-online-2-new-genesis-expansion-trailer"] PSO2: NGS will co-exist alongside PSO2 (including the PC to Xbox cross-play features) and will even let you carry over your character, some of your items and skins, and so on, just not your actual character growth and levels. They’ll be interconnected, but still separate games, and the entirety of PSO2 is getting a massive engine update and graphics overhaul to put it closer to having parity with NGS when it launches. Previously, Sega has described the games as co-existing in “twin universes”, if that makes any sense. Now, look: I don’t speak or read Japanese, but that didn’t stop me from playing the Phantasy Star Online 2: New Genesis Closed Beta Test last month. After logging onto a VPN to fool the game into thinking, making a Japanese SEGA ID, and using my phone’s camera with real-time Google Translate, I was able to fumble my way through logging in, patching, and making a character. After that, the language barrier wasn’t too bad. When PSO2: NGS launches, I really hope the story is a bigger focus than it is in regular PSO2.

Hitman Dev's James Bond Game Is an Original Story Drawing From the Franchise’s Entire History

IGN's Ryan McCaffrey sat down with IO Interactive CEO and co-owner Hakan Abrak to discuss the studio's history in the latest episode of IGN Unfiltered (watch the full interview tomorrow), along with the team's upcoming James Bond game, Hitman 3, separating from Square Enix, and much more. Abrak confirmed that IO won't be using the likeness of any actor who has portrayed 007 in the past, but that's not the only place IO is differentiating itself from what Bond has done before. The team will also be creating a completely new story for their original Bond. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/11/19/io-interactive-bond-game-project-007-teaser-trailer"] When asked if IO would be taking inspiration from the Bond films or books, Abrak said, "It's important to mention: doing a licensed game is new to us. We've only done our own, original IPs (intellectual property), right? We've created these characters... ourselves, from scratch. "So, I think for us to really embrace this fully, and really, as I said before, we don't like to work 'mechanical.' It's not just because it's a big IP, or it's a licensed game, and commercially this is interesting... It means nothing to us. We've taken a lot of non-commercial risks before. So, for us, it's about... we need to feel it, deep inside. The passion needs to be there, so it was very important for us that it wasn't a movie adaptation. So, it wasn't a game about... a specific movie, where the story has already been told." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/11/20/why-a-james-bond-007-game-from-the-hitman-team-has-major-potential"] He continued: "It's very important that we could create a digital Bond. A Bond for the gaming industry... So it's a completely original story. This felt really, really important for us and we conveyed that to [James Bond owner] EON and they agreed that the result would probably be better doing it like that. "There's always excitement around a new Bond.

Why Time Loops Are the New Zombies

Hi! My name’s Michael, and today I want to talk to you about time loops. You know, like the thing Groundhog Day was made of, or one third of all Star Trek: The Next Generation episodes. Time loops are everywhere in gaming and entertainment these days, just like zombies were a decade or so back, and I think that means something. Specifically, that the next ten years are going to be an awesome time for media.

My reasoning is a little complicated, but it has to do with time loops, the Flynn Effect, the nostalgia cycle, our postmodern era and the connections between them. If you give me some time to explain, I think you’ll have some fun and learn a lot. But I’m getting ahead of myself…let’s start over.

[poilib element="accentDivider"]

Hi! My name’s still Michael, and today I want to talk to you about time loops. You know, like the thing Groundhog’s Day was made of, or one third of all Star Trek: The Next Generation episodes. Time loops are everywhere in gaming and entertainment these days, and I can prove it. Between 1980 and 2009, Wikipedia lists 18 film releases about time loops. Between 2010 and now? 36.

That’s twice as many tipe loop movies in a third of the time. I’m talking about movies and series like Palm Springs, ARQ, Happy Death Day, Primer, Looper, The Endless, Russian Doll, Source Code, Predestination, Edge of Tomorrow...the list goes on.

DF Direct Weekly: Is Intel's Rocket Lake really that bad?

Yes, it's a public holiday, but Digital Foundry Direct Weekly continues nonetheless! In this 91 minute episode, myself, John Linneman and Alex Battaglia tackle a number of topics, kicking off with the controversy surrounding Intel's Rocket Lake. From our perspective, it's certainly performant in games but with the Core i9 dropping two cores and the entire range debuting on a platform that will be phased out within the year, there's plenty to count against it too. Regardless, is it really as bad as the PC tech channels say it is?

The discussion moves onto to a bunch of Xbox Series X performance tests - John took a look at Octopath Traveller and Samurai Shodown's 120Hz patch, while also revisiting Crash Bandicoot 4 on Xbox Series X. Is it really less performant than the PS5 version? After that, the team mourns the loss of the PS3 and PlayStation Vita digital stores and ponders Sony's commitment to its hugely important console back catalogue.

After a collective moan about the state of the Windows Store, we move on to our favourite part of the show, where we take questions directly from users on the Digital Foundry supporter programme. What do we expect specs-wise from PlayStation VR 2? What about Elite Dangerous' new planetary rendering technology? And if we didn't have image quality and performance metrics to consider, what would Digital Foundry video content actually consist of... and are we able to enjoy video games regardless of technical issues? These are just a few of the highlights - be sure to watch or listen for the full-fat experience!

Latest HouseCast Details New Focus on Storytelling in Returnal

Housemarque’s upcoming third-person shooter Returnal marks a big change of pace for the developer. Beyond the increased level of production in comparison to its resume of arcade games over the past decade, it marks the first time that storytelling and narrative design through cinematic elements is a central element of the design.

Today, in the fourth and latest episode of its HouseCast dev diary, narrative director Gregory Louden explains how storytelling in Returnal fits in with the typically gameplay-centric design of traditional Housemarque games. He runs through a number of examples that highlight how storytelling is conveyed in an organic and seamless fashion without interrupting the pace and flow of gameplay.

There are also some story tidbits that he uses as examples, which tease some interesting themes and narrative arcs we’ll experience throughout the game — obviously, no spoilers!

The episode is below. Be sure to visit the developer’s YouTube channel to catch up on the previous three if you haven’t yet seen them.

Monster Hunter Rise Still Has Too Steep of A Learning Curve

Monster Hunter has always been a difficult series to pick up and play. It has a simple premise of fighting monsters to upgrade your gear, but it also has a lot of intricate mechanics.

Battles can’t simply be walked into and monsters can’t just be strong-armed. Each fight will have to be carefully planned and each facility available will have to be utilized.

Each new title has streamlined the experience, making it more accessible, but it still has a barrier of entry due to how the game tries to teach all of said mechanics, and that barrier is still much too high. The game throws way too much information at you from the start, expecting you to learn and retain all the while.

I’ve played Monster Hunter World for over 250 hours, and I still don’t understand everything the game has to offer. When I learn a more advanced mechanic in the game, it’s usually because a friend explains it to me, not the game.

I have trouble retaining info just by reading it. It’s much easier if someone walks me through it carefully, and I know other people are the same.
