Why You Should Rewatch Your Favorite Movies in Black and White

2 years 11 months ago

Cinema snobs the world over scoffed when polarizing director Zack Snyder announced that his indulgent superhero opus Zack Snyder’s Justice League would be re-rereleased in a desaturated black and white version he’d dubbed Zack Snyder’s Justice League: Justice Is Gray. I was among them, but mostly because Snyder’s…

This Witcher 3 Mod Adds Kratos’ Leviathan From God of War

2 years 11 months ago

It took a bit of time, but The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’s mod scene has really taken off over the past 18 months or so. It’s now supported by a thriving community of talented developers who keep finding new ways to keep the near six-year-old game fresh and interesting.

This week, milckywayy has added a particularly cool new addition to Geralt’s arsenal in the form of the iconic Leviathan axe from 2018’s God of War.

Like most mods for the game, it’s super easy to install and there are instructions on the NexusMods page.

Once installed, the axe can be bought in 3 different places: Hattori’s home, the Ofieri merchant, and the grandmaster smith in Toussaint.

The Leviathan’s damage and level are scaled to player’s level during buying.

I haven’t played with it myself as yet, but there’s a video trailer showcasing the Leviathan in action below.

Outriders Guide: Top 10 Tips You Need To Know

Supercell Unveils Three New Clash Games

2 years 11 months ago

Click to watch embedded media

Supercell, the creator of the wildly popular Clash of Clans and Clash Royale mobile games, today announced three new games are in development at the studio. All of these upcoming titles share the “Clash” name and characters, but are wildly different in design. Supercell says all of these are early in development, yet wanted to give fans a look at what is next for this beloved brand.

The first game announced is called Clash Quest, a tactical experience against A.I. controlled enemies. The player must strategize against what defenses are in play, and pick the right mix of Clash characters to handle the threat. These characters function much like their Clash Royale counterparts, such as the Prince dashing forward, but are divided up into rows, which brings an entirely different strategy, as you will want to link the same units in different rows to create chain attacks. If you run out of units, it’s game over. If the enemy falls, you win and move on to the next battle.

As you progress, you’ll unlock new unit types, such as the bomber. One new touch is that you’ll also earn different items and weapons for these characters over time. While it appears most of the unlockable characters are from other Clash games, the bosses and villains that you battle against are entirely new to the Clash universe. Some of these adversaries tower over the battlefield.

When's the last time you splurged on games?

2 years 11 months ago

I may have accidentally gotten back into collecting Super Nintendo games. Yeah, let's go with "may."

As many of you have no doubt experienced first-hand, it's been an expensive time for collectors from all walks of life. For anyone looking to lighten their loads, there's an opportunity to strategically cash out, especially when it comes to even vaguely "rare" games, trading cards, and other nostalgia-inducers.

For some buyers – those unfortunate souls who lack enough patience to wait for prices to maybe one day settle into something approaching normal times – it's been a trip. I don't know why my brain decided I should rekindle my SNES love all of a sudden, but it did, and I'm trying not to overdo it.

Recently, that meant a few nights of impulse buying spread across eBay – yeah, eBay! I haven't used it in over a decade! – and a trusted local game store with accurate online listings and high-quality photos.

For now, I've been focusing on the carts I never personally had as a kid – within reason. So, more along the lines of repeat rentals, games I enjoyed at friends' houses, and cool stuff I read about in magazines, not so much "obscure gems people overlooked in the '90s that are now obscenely expensive."

Nazo no Murasame-Jou deserves to be remembered alongside Metroid and Zelda

2 years 11 months ago

Nineteen eighty-six was a transformative year for Nintendo. Super Mario Bros. had released at the end of the previous year and ushered in a slew of influential games. The Legend of Zelda, Metroid, Kid Icarus (I guess), many of which were riding on the features of the Famicom Disk System, which also released that year. Home console games would quickly shift away from the cyclical arcade model and more toward adventures with endpoints; final goals to work towards, rather than just a high score.

We received many of the fruits of this labor. The Legend of Zelda would ship with a special battery backed cartridge to allow saving on the NES, while Metroid and Kid Icarus would swap to passwords. One notable game, however, was left in the dust among those titles; the second original title on the Famicom Disk System, Nazo no Murasame-Jou. Whether it was because it was too Japanese for Western audiences or… actually, that’s the only reason I can think of because it’s an excellent game that could have totally gotten away with just using a password system.

Oddworld Collection compiles three classics for Nintendo Switch

2 years 11 months ago

Classic adventures from the book of Oddworld are being compiled for release on Nintendo Switch. Publisher Microids has announced Oddworld Collection; a physical release that will include a trio of Abe and Co.'s weird, puzzle-platforming adventures.

The first of the three titles is Oddworld: New 'n' Tasty, a ground-up remake of the original 1997 PlayStation release Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee. New 'n' Tasty sees heroic Mudokan Abe begin his rebellious push back against the nefarious, capitalistic Glukkons, who intend to turn both Abe and his people into intergalactic foodstuffs for galaxy-wide distribution. This first series entry introduced players to Oddworld's bizarre universe, as well as its non-confrontational, puzzle-solving, micro-management gameplay.

The second title featured in Oddworld Collection is 2001's Oddworld: Munch's Oddysee, which sees Munch, a Gabbit hunted to near-extinction, and his efforts to free himself and the few remaining Gabbits from a floating research laboratory overseen by a cruel race known as Vykkers. Munch's Oddysee saw the action transition from 2.5D to 3D, as Munch, (with an assist from Abe), picks his way through the laboratory in an effort to bring down the Vykkers from within.

Larian founder Swen Vincke on dice, druids, and Baldur's Gate 3

2 years 11 months ago

Putting a game out early to the public can be tricky, but Early Access is not new to Larian Studios anymore. The RPG studio utilized a staggered launch with Divinity: Original Sin and its sequel to their success, and now with Baldur's Gate 3, it's looking for a third win.

That doesn't mean there haven't been growing pains, though. Baldur's Gate 3 is a different kind of game from Original Sin 2; it has a different combat system, a more cinematic approach, and is firmly rooted in the old tomes of Dungeons & Dragons.

Following the recent addition of the Druid class and another Panel From Hell, we reached out to Larian to see just how its Early Access has been progressing. On a call with studio founder Swen Vincke, the studio head says they've been receiving a lot of feedback from the community, through both analytics and vocal feedback on forums like Reddit, and there have been a few course corrections.

"I know that the community wants us to go faster than we can," Vincke tells me over a video chat. "It does take time to implement things, especially for a game that's as vast as Baldur's Gate 3—also a game that we're still developing—so we have to balance the two things to each other."

2 years 11 months ago
Update (4/3/21 9:25pm PT) - Outriders' Twitter has confirmed that servers are "continuing to improve as the team is working hard to stabilize them in the longterm" and that players should be able to get back online in most cases. Update (4/3/21 9:57am PT) - Outriders is once again experiencing server instability. Outriders' Twitter confirmed that the team is looking into it, but recommends that "this is likely a good time to grab a drink and a snack & take your dog/hyena-looking-cow-thing for a quick walk." "We're working hard on this matter and hope to have news soon," The Twitter account wrote. "We will let you know as soon as we can, but we are unlikely to have news in the next 10-20 minutes, so this is likely a good time to grab a drink and a snack & take your dog/hyena-looking-cow-thing for a quick walk." Update: In a rather colorful tweet, the Outriders Twitter account has announced servers for the US and worldwide should be back up and running. The Outriders online teams will continue to monitor the situation, but for now, players looking to jump back into Outriders should be able to do so now.
"US Outriders - Get back in there and f**k sh*t up," the Outrider Twitter account writes. "Apart from our servers please. We need those. Our teams will continue to monitor the overall situation. Sorry we kept you waiting.

Lost Words' Storybook Of Grief and Love Is Stadia-Exclusive No Longer

2 years 11 months ago
Rhianna Pratchett, whose narrative mind has shaped stories in games like Mirror's Edge, Tomb Raider, and many others, first met the creator of Lost Words: Beyond the Page at a game jam. At the time, Lost Words was about divorce. But that changed quickly once Pratchett signed on as the narrative lead. "Of course, being a Pratchett, I said, 'Well, what about death?'" Pratchett is referring to her late father, Discworld author, Terry Pratchett -- whose books frequently explore death and grief through their fantasy setting. Speaking to IGN, she says this shift was born out of her own personal experience with the death of loved ones, which ultimately heavily shaped Lost Words as well. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/03/09/lost-words-beyond-the-page-release-date-trailer"] Lost Words is a narrative-focused platformer game that's been out for over a year already, but one that many may have missed the first time around, as it was a Google Stadia-exclusive until recently, and it's finally coming to Xbox One, PS4, Steam, and Nintendo Switch on April 6. Its story follows a young girl, Izzy, who aspires to be a writer. When she loses someone close to her, she works through her grief by writing a fantasy story in her journal. Play switches between journal segments with glimpses into Izzy's personal life, and the fantasy story she's writing, where she explores the feelings and ideas she's struggling with in reality through her fantasy protagonist. Pratchett, both through her family and in her own extensive work, is a firm proponent of exactly that -- exploring difficult topics through fantasy stories. [poilib element="quoteBox" parameters="excerpt=It's%20a%20very%20unique%20time%20in%20your%20life%20when%20you%20experience%20loss%20for%20the%20first%20time%2C%20and%20you%20suddenly%20realize%20that%20the%20world%20is%20not%20perfect."] "A lot of people think that fantasy is hugely removed escapism; it's not really," she says.

Super Mario Bros. Sealed Copy Sells for Record-Breaking $660K

2 years 11 months ago

An incredibly rare plastic-sealed copy of Super Mario Bros. for the NES has sold at auction for a world record-breaking $660,000. That hefty price tag makes it the most expensive price ever paid for a video game collectible.

The copy of Super Mario Bros., sold this week by Heritage Auctions, is a copy from the game’s fourth printing run. This means that it did not have the “Game-Pak NES-GP” code and is missing the “™” trademark symbol normally seen to the right of “Nintendo Entertainment System,” which was officially added to all black boxes in early 1987.

[caption id="attachment_2495661" align="alignnone" width="419"]Credit: Heritage Auctions Credit: Heritage Auctions[/caption]

“For Nintendo, it was just stuff they had to do internally, but collectors are using this information now,” Chris Kohler, editorial director at Digital Eclipse, tells IGN. “It’s not like a collector cares if there’s a “™” on their box or not, but it’s the ability to use that information to figure out what the earliest printings are.”

The copy of Super Mario Bros. ranks at a 9.6 on the WATA scale, a rubric commonly used to rate comic book value.

3 Games Where You Could Defeat the Final Boss Early

2 years 11 months ago

If you’ve ever played a game where you fight the big baddy early on, you know how frustrating and impossible it can seem to beat them. Usually, this is by design. Developers want you to be able to experience the whole game, and make it literally impossible to beat the final boss in the first instance.

However, there are a handful of games that do go out of their way to reward players that somehow manage to get the health bar of the final boss down to zero in the early encounter. Here are three games where you could defeat the final boss early.

Outriders: How to Switch to Third Weapon (Sidearm)

2 years 11 months ago

Outriders, despite focusing heavily on its story as well, is a shooter through and through. It mashes together elements of Destiny, Borderlands, Mass Effect and The Division to create a game that somehow still has its own flair. If you’re here, you’re probably wondering how to switch to your third weapon AKA your pistol in Outriders. It isn’t explicitly explained and you not have caught how to do it yourself. Don’t worry, allow us to explain.

How to Switch to Third Weapon in Outriders (Sidearm)

Fortunately, it’s very easy to do.

Normally, to switch between your primary and secondary weapons, you’d simply tap Triangle on PlayStation or Y on Xbox. To switch to your third weapon, AKA your sidearm, you’ll actually want to just hold that same button instead.
Whether you’re currently using your primary or secondary weapon, if you hold that button you’ll swap to your sidearm and can begin firing it the same way you would any other weapon.

There are times where you’ll want to whip out the sidearm. First, and most importantly, the sidearm does not have ammo restraints. While it will need to reload when the magazine is empty, you have unlimited reserves. Meaning if you’re out on your other two guns, or want to preserve their ammo, you can always count on this third weapon to be there for you.

Second, it can be used to complement the other two guns you are using. For example, if you’re using very short-range weapons, your third weapon could be something with a bit more range so that way you’re not completely stuck having to fight at a close range.

Outriders: Is There a Difficulty Trophy & Achievement; Answered

2 years 11 months ago

Outriders is here and players are now able to jump into the latest game from developer People Can Fly and publisher Square Enix. The game mixes in both RPG and third-person shooter mechanics to create a game that is kind of like a cross between The Division and Borderlands 3. If you’re here, you’re probably wondering how much you need to worry about a difficulty trophy or achievement in Outriders. Here’s what you need to know.

Difficulty Trophy & Achievement in Outriders

Good news, if you’re worried about locking yourself out of trophies and achievements in Outriders. There are no difficulty trophies or achievements whatsoever in Outriders.

You can complete all of Outriders on World Tier 1, 5, 10 whatever you want, it doesn’t matter. You will be able to get all of the trophies and achievements possible in the game without needing to worry about that. That doesn’t mean getting all of them will be easy, it just means that you at least don’t have to worry about missing something based on something like difficulty.

Playing on higher world tiers does have its perks though. While it is much more difficult, you’ll get better XP, more drops, and higher-quality weapons and armor that can be over-leveled, giving you a slight edge if you were to go back down.

If you’re looking for more information about World Tiers in Outriders, definitely check out our guide on that topic which can explain how to change them, and why you should consider tweaking it during your run through the campaign of Outriders as it’s the only real way to shift the difficulty around.

Outriders: How to Beat Molten Acari Boss Battle Guide

2 years 11 months ago

The Molten Acari boss is arguably the first major challenge you’ll encounter in Outriders. It has multiple phases and can be very difficult if you aren’t prepared for its attacks. In this boss guide we’re going to go over how to beat the Molten Acari boss battle in Outriders, and what you should expect for all three phases of this fight.

Just a few general tips before getting started with the fight itself. First, make sure you have your strongest weapons and armor equipped. Although perks are nice, and sometimes can be worth their weight, you’ll want to make sure you have weapons that are high level and do strong damage. You don’t want to be firing a pea shooter. The same goes with your armor, stack up your armor stat as high as you can.

Also, if you’re having trouble still, don’t be afraid to switch the World Tier to a lower difficulty, at least until you get through this boss battle.

How to Beat Molten Acari in Outriders

First Phase

Even though it’s the first phase of the fight against the Molten Acari, it’s still not a walk in the park. This molten spider is still dangerous. Its attacks will be marked on the ground, so make you’re not standing there before they go off. Use your sprint and dodge to quickly get out of the way.

You’ll notice on its abdomen there are scales that look like they can be broken off and, with enough damage, they can be. Shooting these off will expose its squishy bright orange skin (or whatever it is) and they will serve as a weak spot that you can shoot at for extra damage. It’s not required to hit it, it will just speed things up if you can target your fire there.

Outriders: How to Melee

2 years 11 months ago

The combat in Outriders is surprisingly varied, with a wide array of weapons and skills to take advantage of. You can even bash enemies with class-specific melee attacks, though if you’re like most players, you might not know how to melee in Outriders.

That’s why we’ve taken the time to create this guide. Read on to find out what you need to do to melee, when the best times to melee are and more.

How to Melee in Outriders

To melee in Outriders, all you need to do is press R3 on PlayStation consoles or RS on Xbox consoles.

Doing so will see your character strike out with a short-range attack directly in front of them. What kind of attack they use, though, will vary based on their class. For example, the Pyromancer class fires a burst of flame in a line in front of them, setting enemies ablaze and healing you in the process.

When You Should Use Melee Attacks

However, it is worth mentioning that there are some situations that are better than others for using melee attacks.

If you’re going up against a single enemy, then using melee attacks is recommended. It can help you take them out quickly, while also gaining any benefits that might result from your character attack’s elemental affinity.

If you find yourself against a group of enemies though, it’s best to hold off on trying to bash them. More often than not, they’ll swarm you before you can take them out, killing you in no time flat.

Outriders: How to Replay Missions

2 years 11 months ago

Outriders’ gameplay is easily the game’s highpoint, providing you with plenty of firefights and boss battles that take full advantage of its fast-paced design. This is most apparent in its missions, and while there are more than a few to take on, you might find one in particular that leaves you wondering how to replay missions in Outriders.

Fortunately, there is a way to go through any mission you’ve played a second, third, or twelfth time, and we’re here to walk you through how this is done.

How to Replay Missions in Outriders

It isn’t too difficult to replay missions in Outriders once you know what to look for and where to go.

After completing any mission in the game, the marker that used to indicate where it was will still show up on the map. However, it will now appear as a faded-grey marker instead of a colored one.

Head to any of these faded markers, and then interact with the person or area entrance that it’s tied to. Once you do, a dialogue or menu option to replay the mission will pop up. Select this option, and you’ll then be sent to the start of the mission and be able to run through it again.

That’s all there is to it really. As mentioned before, there’s no limit to how often you can replay missions. As such, you can redo missions as much as you’d like, either for fun or to grind your character of choice up to a higher level.

Outriders: Are There Cheats? Answered

2 years 11 months ago

Look, we get it. As cool as the mechanics and gameplay of People Can Fly’s new looter shooter are, you’ve hit the point where you just want to breeze through the game feeling like an all-powerful badass – regardless of whether you reached that point fairly or not. As such, you’re wondering: Are there cheats in Outriders?

Well, for better or worse, we have the answer you’re looking for. Read on to find out whether or not there are some codes or exploits you should know about that can enhance your gaming experience.

Are There Cheats in Outriders? Answered

As it currently stands, there are no official cheats you can use in Outriders.

This means that while it is possible to give your characters enhanced stats and buffs by hacking the game, these actions aren’t officially supported by the game’s developer People Can Fly.

Not only that, but PCF will actively punish you if they catch you cheating. Your account’s user name will be tagged with a watermark that will be visible to anyone you play with, and you may face other punishments from the developer depending on the severity of your cheating.

To top it all off, you won’t be able to switch to a new character to avoid your punishment. The aforementioned watermark will be tied to the account you use in the game, and will be applied no matter which of your characters you try to play as.

It’s a little intense, but shouldn’t come as a surprise if you’ve kept up with developers’ approaches to cheating in online multiplayer games. Many have become much more strict about punishing cheaters and making sure cheats aren’t allowed, in order to ensure all players are on a level playing field.

Outriders: How to Skip Cutscenes & Dialogue

2 years 11 months ago

Let’s be frank: Outriders’ cutscenes aren’t something you’re likely to enjoy. The dialogue can be too hammy, and the camera will shake like crazy unless you’ve tweaked some of the game’s settings. That’s why absolutely no one will judge you for wanting to know how to skip cutscenes and dialogue in Outriders.

And we can help you do just that. In this guide, we’ll walk you through how to get through cinematics and ‘talky bits’ as fast as possible so you can keep yourself immersed in the gameplay.

How to Skip Cutscenes and Dialogue in Outriders

Like with most modern games, skipping cutscenes and dialogue in Outriders is easy once you know what to do.

For cutscenes, simply hold down the Circle button on PlayStation consoles or the B button on Xbox Consoles. This will skip you past any cinematic that is currently playing, and drop you back into the gameplay.

The controls are the same for skipping dialogue, but you’ll need to keep pressing the button repeatedly to skip each block of text that pops up. It can be a bit of a pain, but it’s nothing some dedicated button-mashing can’t see you through.

That’s all there is to it, really. While the story is a big part of the overall experience the game tries to provide, it doesn’t force you to sit through cutscenes and dialogue in any way, shape, or form. If you’d rather focus on the gameplay, and the gameplay alone, it’ll let you do that with minimal hassle.

Is Outriders PS5 and Xbox Series X Enhanced? Answered

2 years 11 months ago

Outriders is an interesting entry in the looter shooter genre for a few reasons, not least of which being that it’s one of the first to appear on the latest generation of consoles. The game is also available on last-gen consoles though, and given that fact, you wouldn’t be blamed for wondering: Is Outriders PS5 and Xbox Series X enhanced?

We found ourselves asking the same question, and after doing some digging, we’ve found an answer.

Is Outriders PS5 and Xbox Series X Enhanced? Answered

As it currently stands, yes, Outriders is PS5 and Xbox Series X enhanced.

While playing the game in the latest generation of consoles, you’ll enjoy a host of benefits related to performance and graphical fidelity. The game will load faster, won’t suffer from issues like pop-in as frequently, and should run at a buttery-smooth 60 FPS without issue.

This can be a huge upside to any play session of Outriders, as smooth performance is key to getting the most out of its online multiplayer components. Knowing you’re experiencing every moment as fast and as clearly as possible will help to keep you better immersed in every firefight the game throws at you.

These benefits apply equally to both the PS5 and Xbox Series X, too. Neither runs the game noticeably better than the other, meaning you’ll be able to enjoy the optimal version of the game without worrying about whether the game would be better on one console over the other.

That’s all there is to it, really. It’s a nice perk for those who have snagged the snazzy new consoles, and one that should be taken advantage of if possible.

Outriders: Is There Romance? Answered

2 years 11 months ago

There’s a lot to do in People Can Fly’s new looter shooter Outriders, with gear to find, expansive areas to explore, and a host of characters to interact with. That last one can be unclear on just how deep its mechanics are though, so you wouldn’t be blamed for wondering: Is there romance in Outriders, or an option to flirt with a specific character?

We had the same question going into the game, and after some experimentation, we’ve found the answer. Read on to find out whether you should be buttering up specific NPCs or if you can speak your mind without fear of failure.

Is There Romance in Outriders? Answered

Currently, there are no romance options in Outriders.

No matter how much you talk to any given NPC or main character, you won’t have the option to enter a romantic relationship with them or take your relationship to the next level. Some dialogue options might get a little suggestive, but that’s as far as it’ll go.

It’s a bit of a bummer, but also not that surprising if you’ve played other recent looter shooters. Very few have romance options, and instead opt for a focus on gameplay and more tempered relationships between players and their cast of characters.

Will Romance Be Added in Later?

As for whether romance might be added into Outriders at a later date, the chances are pretty unlikely.

While there is the possibility of it happening, People Can Fly will have their hands full optimizing and refining the game now that it has launched. As a result, they probably won’t have the time or resources to dedicate to adding the feature in any time soon, if at all.
