Guide Guevara and Castro to freedom in SNK's 1987 release Guerrilla War

3 years 1 month ago

This week's retro re-release certainly offers something a little different, history-wise, as the retro fans over at Hamster having chosen SNK's on-foot jungle shmup Guerrilla War as its newest Arcade Archives entry, now available to download on Nintendo Switch.

Originally released in arcades in 1987, before being ported to numerous home computers, Guerilla War follows two UNNAMED commandos as they fight through an UNNAMED Caribbean island in order to free it from an UNNAMED dictator. Similar in style to SNK's earlier Ikari Warriors, gameplay sees one or two players battle through the undergrowth against an army of enemy soldiers. The arcade was notable for featuring rotatable joysticks allowing for simultaneous eight-way movement and directional fire.

Check out the action in the video below, courtesy of YouTuber GameingfromTwo.

Looks like Microsoft is testing 1080p streams for Xbox Game Pass cloud gaming

3 years 1 month ago

Microsoft is reportedly testing 1080p for Xbox Game Pass cloud streaming.

According to Windows Central, anonymous but "trusted" sources sent screenshots of Hellblade running via xCloud, alleging that the streaming resolution was 1920x1080.

Up until now, the hardware had previously only been able to run in 720p, but it seems Microsoft is now planning to refresh the streaming servers from "Xbox One architecture" to that of the Xbox Series X. If successful, it will bring xCloud in line with other streaming services such as GeForce Now and Google Stadia, which already offer 1080p (thanks, VG24/7).

18-Year-Old Italian Zerg, Riccardo “Reynor” Romiti, is the 2020/2021 StarCraft 2 World Champion

3 years 1 month ago

Italian Zerg phenom, Riccardo Romiti, better known in the community as Reynor, has won the StarCraft 2 Masters Championship at IEM Katowice. This marks the end of the 2020 StarCraft 2 tournament circuit run by ESL and is now effectively the grand finals of StarCraft 2 since Blizzard passed the reigns over to ESL.

Reynor went through a gauntlet of the world’s best players to secure his win, defeating Korean StarCraft II legends: Stats (P), Dark (Z), Maru (T), and finally Zest (P) in the grand finals. Reynor had to get a win in all three matchups in the playoffs before eventually facing off and beating Zest 4-2.

Reynor’s win is the second time a player from outside of Korea has become StarCraft 2 grand champion; the first time was when Serral won back in 2018.

This development shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone that has been following the StarCraft 2 esports scene closely over the last few years. He was the runner-up in the 2019 world champion losing that year to Dark.

Xbox Games Marketing Boss Debunks Speculation About Event Coming Soon With Big World Premieres

3 years 1 month ago

There has been speculation floating around about an Xbox event, especially in relation to a reveal of From Software’s Elden Ring.

After growing on social media, it was also reported as possibly credible by a variety of media outlets.

Turns out that said speculation was false. Xbox Games Marketing general manager Aaron Greenberg took to Twitter to debunk the rumors.

“Just to set expectations: this is not happening. There are always things we have in the works, but nothing coming soon that would feature game announcements or world premieres like this.”

This doesn’t mean that no event is coming, but whether it is or it isn’t, we shouldn’t expect world premieres of this kind of magnitude.

Of course, Twinfinite opted not to report on the rumors and speculation when they surfaced.

As usual, this kind of speculation is very hit and miss, and should always be taken with a large grain of salt, regardless of its source.

Elden Ring has been announced at E3 2019 during Microsoft’s press briefing, but actual news about it has been very space since, excluding the confirmation of its composer last year.

It’s not unlikely that the times are mature for a new reveal, but we should likely wait for something official before we build expectations.

As soon as said official information is revealed, you’ll be able to read it here for sure.

Google Stadia Reports Detail Internal Troubles, 'Millions' Spent on AAA Ports

3 years 1 month ago
Multiple reports have come out detailing Google Stadia's troubles that include everything from internal struggles on the development team to "tens of millions" of dollars spent on AAA games like Red Dead Redemption 2 to  development roadblocks created by Google itself. Bloomberg reported that, despite all the hype built up by Google for Stadia's reveal, gamers around the world were disappointed. This led to a lackluster launch and Stadia is said to have "missed its targets for sales of controllers and monthly active users by hundreds of thousands." Not even games from some of the best publishers like Ubisoft and Take-Two Interactive Software could help turn the tide for Stadia. Those games didn't come cheap either, as sources from Bloomberg say it cost "tens of millions" of dollars to bring games like Red Dead Redemption 2 to the platform. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2019/11/22/google-stadia-review"] Wired also share some of the struggles at Stadia that ultimately led to the closure of Google Stadia's internal studios. Many of these issues stemmed from Google creating roadblocks for these employees who were trying to staff up to build AAA games. Google is known for its long and involved hiring process that can take anywhere from six to nine months.

Stardew Valley is five years old now, creator thanks fans for sticking with it

3 years 1 month ago

Stardew Valley is a timeless game. It's something I'll be playing for decades to come, so I'm glad it's on as many platforms as possible: way easier to preserve it!

Pictured above is one of my first farms, which I started years ago and still come back to every so often. This past week, Stardew celebrated its fifth anniversary. That's...forever ago in gaming collective consciousness!

While so many projects these days are forgotten a week after release, Stardew has endured. In part, mind, due to the tireless efforts of the creator, Eric "ConcernedApe" Barone. They've been instrumental in the game's success, not only crafting free updates to keep the game interesting, but also interacting with fans, adding an allure of endearment to everything Stardew related (including a heartfelt thanks over the anniversary celebrations).

At this point it's far exceeded the reach of the PC original, with countless fan mods, pieces of merch, and most recently, a board game. The gaming sphere is better with Stardew Valley, and Barone, in it.

The long-awaited Panzer Dragoon II Zwei remake is finally coming out this year

3 years 1 month ago

A lot of people have probably forgotten by now, but in December of 2018, it was announced by studio Forever Entertainment that both Panzer Dragoon and the sequel, Zwei, would be getting full remakes. That latter bit was lost in the shuffle, as we haven't seen nor heard anything from the project since then.

Thankfully, the outfit changed that this past week through a Twitter announcement. As plain as day, Panzer Dragoon Zwei remake is slated for release "this year," in 2021. It's still vague, but at least we know that work is heavily underway and it is coming.

Although the original Panzer Dragoon remake started out rough, the team laboriously patched it until it was in a better state. With the hindsight they have now, it stands to reason that Zwei will be in better shape.

It would behoove them to put their best foot forward on this, too, to avoid a hit to their reputation.

Stardew Valley Creator Thanks Fans for Sticking With the Game on 5 Year Anniversary

3 years 1 month ago

Just yesterday, Stardew Valley celebrated its five year anniversary, which sounds pretty insane if you think about it. It’s already been five years since the game’s release, yet it still feels consistently fresh and exciting with how much work has been put into it post-launch.

Eric Barone, AKA ConcernedApe and the creator of the game, took to Twitter on the game’s five year anniversary to thank fans and players for sticking with the game for so long. And with how the game has been constantly improving over the years, it’s entirely possible that Barone will continue to work on patches and updates to add more content to it.

Just a few months ago, we got update 1.5, which was the biggest content drop Stardew Valley’s seen in quite a while. It added new dungeons, new animals, tools, along with new early and late-game goals for players to work towards, and the patch got released for consoles just a couple weeks ago.
