Monster Hunter Rise Is Coming to PC in 2022

3 years 2 months ago

Nintendo Switch title Monster Hunter Rise will eventually come to PC, according to producer Ryozo Tsujimoto. While the latest title in the Monster Hunter series will launch on Switch on March 26, Tsujimoto told IGN Japan in an interview that PC players can expect to get their hands on the game sometime in early 2022.

“We received a lot of requests for a PC version of Monster Hunter Rise, particularly from overseas players, and so we have decided to develop a version for PC, which we aim to release in early 2022,” said Tsujimoto. “This is still under development, so I’d like to share more detailed information when the time is right.”

No other details of the PC version were available.

While Monster Hunter has long been a killer franchise in Japan, 2018’s Monster Hunter: World and its Iceborne expansion brought the series to global success, with World selling over 16.8 million units worldwide, and a further 7.2 million sales for Iceborne. It’s encouraging to hear that Capcom is listening to series fans around the world when it considers platforms for new entries such as Rise.

Monster Hunter Rise has been specifically designed with the Switch’s capabilities in mind – for example, Tsujimoto said in the interview that during development “we considered the characteristics of the Nintendo Switch, which can be used as a handheld, and with that in mind we focused on hunting at a higher tempo than before.”

Sony reportedly set to open up PS5 for internal storage this summer

3 years 2 months ago

Sony will open up the PlayStation 5 for internal storage upgrades this summer, according to a new report.

Bloomberg says this support for additional drives will come alongside a firmware update that unlocks higher cooling fan speeds to prevent the console from overheating.

Next generation games for PS5 can only be run from the console's internal storage, which makes just 667GB available for game installs. When you consider the install size of some games, such as Call of Duty, the PS5 can fill up fast.

New Gameplay Today – Monster Hunter Rise Khezu Boss Fight

The Monster Hunter series is more popular than ever, thanks to recent entries Monster Hunter: World and its Iceborne expansion. Meanwhile, Nintendo fans have had to wait patiently for their time to shine. Thankfully, that time is close at hand. Monster Hunter Rise is an all-new adventure for Nintendo Switch, giving hunters another excuse to hit the field (and a host of monsters). In this episode of NGT, we take a look at what’s ahead, including a look at the returning fan favorite (?), the Khezu.

We start out with a quick look at Monster Hunter Rise’s cooking system. Unlike World’s kitchen, which featured drool-worthy entrees and dishes, Rise seems to be more about indulging your hunter’s sweet tooth. Players can mix and match different combinations of mochi, and you can see the Palico’s pounding out the delicious desert – and presenting it with a wonderfully catchy tune. (Skip to the end of the video to hear it without our commentary; it’s worth a listen.)

From there, we take a look at a battle against the returning Khezu wyvern. They’re virtually blind, they’re nasty looking, and people apparently can’t get enough of them. That’s what Tack keeps trying to tell us, at least. We also get to see an extended rodeo-riding session, which is used to bring two monsters together for some kaiju-style action.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake PS Plus Version Won't Be Upgradeable to PS5 Version

3 years 2 months ago
Update: Final Fantasy 7 Remake for PS4 has now been confirmed for March's PS Plus line-up, and will not offer a free PS5 upgrade. [poilib element="accentDivider"] The PS4 version of Final Fantasy 7 Remake could be coming to PS Plus next March, at least in Japan – but it won't upgrade freely to the new PS5 version. As pointed out by Twitter user aibo, the Japanese PS Store listing for Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade includes small print that indicates the original PS4 game will be added to PS Plus, with the odd detail that the small print says it was added on March 1, which is... next week. Roughly translated, that listing adds that, "The PlayStation 4 version 'FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE' obtained as a free play by subscribing to PlayStation Plus cannot be upgraded to the PlayStation 5 version." It's not clear exactly how that upgrade process would be blocked, given that most upgradeable PS4/PS5 games offer a new version automatically – it may be that the game is offered as a separate 'PS Plus Editon' to prevent an upgrade. It's also worth pointing out that Japanese PS Plus games can differ from those in other territories.

PlayStation 5 Internal Storage Upgrades Will Reportedly Be Enabled This Summer

3 years 2 months ago
Players will be able to upgrade their PlayStation 5 internal storage following an update in the summer, according to a Bloomberg report. Sources close to the planning process told Bloomberg that a firmware patch will arrive later this year, and will let players upgrade the internal storage on the console with compatible M.2 SSD drives. The console launched with the upgradable expansion slot, but it's been unusable – the patch will finally activate it, allowing owners to improve upon the 667 GB of storage available from the PS5's internal SSD, crucially letting them store more than a few PS5 games on the system at one time. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/02/25/state-of-play-live-stream-playstation"] The console's storage can already be expanded via an external drive connected by USB, but it will only be able to play and store PS4 games. At present, native PS5 games have to be played on the console's internal storage, but this reported patch will at least let players have more internal space for PS5 games. Bloomberg's report says that the update will also unlock "higher cooling-fan speeds" to support custom drives and mitigate overheating. This reported patch will be important given the ballooning storage real-estate taken up by modern games.

Report: PS5 storage upgrade not available until summer

3 years 2 months ago

While Sony's new PlayStation 5 hardware packs a serious punch when it comes to gameplay, one area that it is still sorely lacking in is storage space. With many modern AAA game releases heading into the wrong side of three figures when it comes to file size, PS5 owners are quickly discovering that their shiny new SSDs are struggling from room less than six months into the console's lifespan.

And it looks like players still have a bit of a wait ahead before they can start freely swinging their elbows around like they own the place. According to a new report from Bloomberg, the PS5 is unlikely to see any kind of internal storage upgrade option until this summer, which sources say is when Sony will unlock the PS5's internal upgrade ability.

It's a question of temperature, the unnamed sources told Bloomberg. The PlayStation 5 needs ample cooling power to prevent the powerful technology from overheating, and as such new internal components cannot be installed until Sony allows the PS5's fans to spin up at a faster rate, as and when needed by any specific game. Once a firmware update unlocks this ability, then PS5 owners should be able to replace the internal SSD with a larger one of their own choosing.

It should be reiterated that this is an "unnamed sources" affair, and as such there has been no official word from Sony. But regardless, the PlayStation 5 is desperately in need of a storage upgrade option, and if it currently cannot have one simply because the fans aren't working fast enough, that feels like a bit of an oversight on the next-gen platform's overall design.

The Double-A Team: Rodea the Sky Soldier is an overlooked action game that deserves to take flight

3 years 2 months ago

After leaving Sega, and narrowly dodging a bullet of having his name on the disaster that was Sonic 2006, Yuji Naka established his own company, Prope. It was a chance for the veteran developer to create a range of original IP no longer shackled to a certain blue hedgehog.

While the majority of the studio's output was rather simplistic casual games for mobile, the man behind Sonic, NiGHTS, and yes, even Billy Hatcher, hadn't given up on creating another colourful mascot action-platformer.

This brings us to Rodea the Sky Soldier. Which is not really a platformer at all, since the magic comes from not touching the ground, but rather soaring and bounding between targets. You pilot the titular robot boy who's trying to recover his memories while defending the floating kingdom of Garuda from the dastardly mechanical Naga Empire.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade: Square Enix Clarifies Yuffie Episode Is PS5 Exclusive

3 years 2 months ago
Square Enix has clarified that Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade's Yuffie Episode can't be played as a standalone and will be exclusive to the PS5. An FAQ page was uploaded after Intergrade's reveal during the most recent Sony State of Play broadcast. The Yuffie Episode was announced alongside Intergrade, but is a separate piece of DLC – but Square Enix has made clear that it won't be coming to PS4. The FAQ says that, "the new Yuffie Episode is optimized for PlayStation 5, so it is not available on PlayStation 4." This means that the only way to access the Yuffie Episode is to buy Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade on PS5 or, if you own a PlayStation 4 version of Final Fantasy VII Remake and a PlayStation 5, upgrade your version of the game – but you will still need to purchase the Yuffie Episode separately if you upgrade. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/02/25/final-fantasy-7-remake-intergrade-reveal-trailer"] Square Enix also explains that, even though you can purchase it separately as part of the upgrade process on PS5, Yuffie Episode can't be played as a standalone game without the rest of the package. "The new episode featuring Yuffie can only be played by either purchasing Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade on PlayStation 5, or by purchasing it separately after completing the free PlayStation 5 enhancement upgrade," the FAQ reads. Alongside Intergrade, Square Enix also announced a Final Fantasy VII Battle Royale game called Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier. as well as a mobile remake of Final Fantasy 7 and its spin-offs, called Ever Crisis.

Monster Hunter Rise Fine-Tunes Many Of The Series' Familiar Elements

3 years 2 months ago

For all of the innovative features it introduces to the series, Monster Hunter Rise is still very much a traditional Monster Hunter game at its core. Your overarching goal is to embark on quests, then use the various materials you've gathered from those missions to forge better pieces of equipment for your hunter. It's a familiar and compelling gameplay loop, but Rise also fine-tunes the experience in some helpful ways, which Capcom recently demonstrated to us in a video presentation.

Our look at the game took us on a guided tour of Kamura Village, Monster Hunter Rise's primary hub area. Like many other aspects of the game, Kamura has a distinctly Japanese flair. The village is lined with cherry blossom trees, merchant stalls, and thatched buildings, while cat-like Felynes scurry about carrying oversized bundles on their backs.

You'll spend much of your downtime between hunts in Kamura, making use of the village's various vendors and other amenities to prepare for quests, purchase supplies, craft new gear, manage your items, and advance the story. Monster Hunter veterans will be immediately familiar with this routine, but Rise makes things a bit more manageable by introducing some welcome refinements.

Yakuza Dev Would Like Historical Spin-Offs Localized, But It's Complicated

3 years 2 months ago

The Yakuza series of games is notorious for slow localizations, with Western releases often coming years after the game debuted in Japan. Some of Yakuza's spinoffs--most notably the historical games that take Yakuza's main cast back to the 17th and 19th centuries--have never been localized, though at least someone at Sega is thinking about it, Kotaku reports.

After years of silence on the topic of localising Ryū ga Gotoku Kenzan! and Ryū ga Gotoku Ishin!, Yakuza director Daisuke Sato has finally broached the topic in an interview with a German gaming site.

"Personally, I would like for [Kenzan and Ishin] to be localized and enjoyed by our Western fans," Sato said. "We were prioritizing regaining our ground with the series in the West from Yakuza 0, so time just flew by without an ideal time to release these games. In my opinion, the action is one of the best in the series, so I’d like to localize them if we get the chance."
