Here's that Final Fantasy VII battle royale you've all been asking for

3 years 2 months ago

Do you love battle royales but hate that there isn't enough Final Fantasy in them? Well, good news! Following the reveal of Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade, Square Enix dropped the curtain on another FFVII project: The First Soldier.

Coming to iOS and Android, Final Fantasy VII: The First Soldier is a mobile battle royale where players will face off against one another before the events of Final Fantasy VII. As you can see in the trailer above, it has everything you expect in a battle royale (you know, guns) but pairs it with traditional Final Fantasy trappings, like chocobos, spells, and summons. Everyone on the battlefield will be a Shinra SOLDIER candidate, and there will be solo play as well as teams.

That's about all the info we have on it so far, but you can expect Square Enix to reveal more as we draw closer to its 2021 release. The First Soldier will be free-to-play with optional in-game purchases, but you probably already guessed that.

Yuffie returns this summer in Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade

3 years 2 months ago

Sony ended its State of Play presentation with a bang, giving Final Fantasy fans a new look at Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade for PS5, with an additional new episode teased for the award-winning revisit to Square Enix's classic PlayStation adventure. The PS5 edition will launch June 10, available in standard format for $69.99 or a Digital Deluxe edition for $89.99, with a free upgrade path.

An action-packed trailer spotlit the return of feisty ninja Yuffie Kisaragi, who will re-join the action following the dramatic and calamitous ending of Final Fantasy VII Remake.

First appearing in an amusing Moogle disguise, Yuffie soon reveals her true identity, before letting rip on the forces of Shinra Inc., armed with her ninja prowess, her giant shuriken, and her big ol' socks. This special episode sees Yuffie take the lead as a loud-mouthed protagonist.

Sony took the opportunity to show off footage of Final Fantasy VI Remake Intergrade running on PlayStation 5 hardware. The PS5 edition of the epic RPG will naturally feature optimized lighting, improved textures, and reduced load times. An obligatory Graphics Optimization Mode will also be implemented in-game. A new Photo Mode will allow players to capture their party in all its finery.

Best of all, PS4 players who already own Final Fantasy VII Remake will be able to upgrade to the PS5 edition free of charge – though you will have to purchase the new Yuffie episode separately.

Oddworld: Soulstorm is a PlayStation Plus freebie on PS5 in April

3 years 2 months ago

We're expecting to get a handful of free PlayStation games this year (including the PS4's Ratchet & Clank) as part of Sony's Play At Home program. Here's another freebie, albeit an offer from PS Plus.

The ever-freaky-looking Oddworld: Soulstorm popped up again during today's State of Play stream with an April 6 launch date on the Epic Games Store, PS4, and PS5. If you're a PlayStation Plus member, you'll be able to snag Soulstorm "at no extra cost" from April 6 to May 3, 2021. Don't mind if I do!

For those of you who really dig the haptic feedback of the DualSense controller when it doesn't seem like an afterthought, Soulstorm will let you "feel" poor Abe's heartbeat as he's put through the wringer.

If you're hoping for a physical edition of the game, details are coming "at a later date."

Sifu is the next action game from Absolver developer Sloclap

3 years 2 months ago

After a surprisingly ho-hum start to this afternoon's State of Play presentation, PlayStation lifted the lid on Sifu, a new melee action game from the melee action masters at Absolver developer Sloclap. Can I interest you in an Oldboy-inspired hallway brawl? That's the thing that'll stick with me most after today.

This is a revenge story at its heart, as all good brawls should be. You'll rely on a magical pendant to cheat death on a martial-arts journey to avenge your family in a fictional Chinese city. Nothing's free, though – the protagonist ages each time they're revived. That explains the gray hair and beard.

"Careful positioning and clever use of the environment to your advantage are key to your survival," according to the developer. "Throwable objects, makeshift weapons, windows, and ledges... The odds are stacked against you, you will have to use everything at your disposal to prevail."

Could be cool! Also, if you're stuck on the pronunciation, it's "See-fu."

Five Nights at Freddy's: Security Breach brings its animatronic horror to next-gen

3 years 2 months ago

During today's State of Play presentation, Sony showed off the first gameplay video of first-person horror sequel Five Nights at Freddy's: Security Breach.

Stepping away from the strict CCTV setting, the new sequel will see our hapless security guards pick their way through a Wacky Warehouse-style environment in first-person gameplay, while dodging the murderous army of sentient animatronics - once again led by Freddy Fazbear - who are out for blood, or at least once all of the obnoxious children's pizza parties are done and dusted. Bring a torch and an extra set of batteries, it's going to be a long night.

You're the birthday... You're the birthday... You're the birthday Boy or Girl.

Five Nights at Freddy's: Security Breach will launch on PS4, PS5, and PC later in 2021.

State of Play: Sifu Is an Authentic Kung Fu Action Game From the Developers of Absolver

3 years 2 months ago
Sifu is a new action game with a unique take on the Kung Fu genre. Announced at PlayStation's February 2021 State of Play, Sifu will quite literally turn the student into the master as each time the player character dies, they’re revived slightly older, and more skilled. Developer Sloclap is returning to the world of hand-to-hand combat after Absolver with a true 3D Kung Fu game. Draped in a story of revenge and redemption, Sifu is the closest thing you’ll get to a Kung Fu movie in video game form, or at so the developer hopes. IGN spoke with Sloclap co-founders Pierre Tarno and Jordan Layani to find out more about the upcoming PlayStation (and Epic Games Store) exclusive. Kung Fu is not a new concept in video games, but a bulk of it is siloed in the world of fighting games. Sifu is dyed in the wool about Kung Fu. “We’re very passionate about martial arts, Kung Fu in particular. Jordan, as he’ll tell you, actually practices Bak Mei Kung Fu and other team members have joined the school where Jordan practices,” says Tarno. And the team channeled this passion into Sifu. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=sifu-playstation-state-of-play-reveal-screenshots&captions=true"] While you can expect true-to-form Kung Fu combat, the one twist in Sifu is how death is handled. Instead of dying, the main character ages just a bit. As with the spirit of Kung Fu, this now older version of the character knows a few more skills to go with the wrinkles. Designer Jordan Layani says this mechanic is an important metaphor. “Gung Fu literally means mastery by practicing. So it was important for us that Kung Fu cannot be learned by reading books or watching videos,” says Layani. “You have to practice a lot to improve your Kung Fu.

3 years 2 months ago
Deathloop got a new trailer at today's Sony State of Play, complete with a brand new, classy-as-all-get-out James Bond-style theme song. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/02/25/deathloop-deja-vu-state-of-play-trailer"] The stylish sequences shows off the back and forth between the main character, Colt -- an assassin stuck in a time loop in which he must eliminate eight people to escape -- and a character trying to protect the loop by eliminating Colt, Juliana. Solar Ash: Gameplay Detailed for Hyper Light Drifter Dev's New Game

3 years 2 months ago
During today's Sony State of Play, we got a first look at gameplay from Solar Ash, the next game from Hyper Light Drifter developer Heart Machine. In an extended gameplay showcase, Heart Machine Creative Director Alex Preston said that "at its core, Solar Ash is a game about movement," with a focus on speed and fluidity. It's a 3D platformer takes place across a huge map with a very agile main character named Rei who can skate across a ground made of ashen clouds, scale certain walls, and more. Watch the full gameplay below: [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/02/25/solar-ash-gameplay-overview-trailer"] Rei has descended into a massive black hole (where the game takes place) in order to save her homeworld, where she is shown moving fast, picking up little pink blobs scattered about, skating across rails, and using some type of grappling hook to pull herself to specific points. There's also combat, which Preston described as "simple, fast, and fluid, built to empower players and encourage flow." Rei is also shown fighting and climbing much larger, white-plated creatures called Sentinels, which apparently "hold the key to her quest" that are very reminiscent of a game like Shadow of the Colossus. Solar Ash is coming to PS5, PS4, and PC sometime in 2021. [poilib element="accentDivider"] Tom Marks is IGN's Deputy Reviews Editor and resident pie maker. You can follow him on Twitter.

Animal Crossing: New Horizons Gets Hello Kitty and Sanrio Items in March

3 years 2 months ago

Animal Crossing: New Horizons will be getting Hello Kitty and themed items of other Sanrio characters in March, Nintendo showed off today.

The company released a trailer showing off some of the new residents, furniture, and clothes that can be obtained through scanning Amiibo cards.

“From Hello Kitty, My Melody, to Keroppi, get ready to discover new residents, styles and items inspired by adorable Sanrio friends!” Nintendo tweeted.

The Sanrio Collaboration Pack, announced last January, includes six cards with different themes and residents: Chelsea, Chai, Etoile, Marty, Rilla, and Toby. The pack contains all six cards for $5.99, and will be sold in the United States exclusively at Target starting on March 26.

Nintendo and Sanrio have collaborated in the past with Hello Kitty Amiibo cards in 2016 for the Nintendo 3DS game Animal Crossing: New Leaf in Japan. The pack did contain the same residents as the upcoming pack, though players were disappointed to learn that the 2016 Amiibo cards would only give posters featuring Sanrio characters in Animal Crossing: New Horizon.

3 years 2 months ago

Today Microsoft announced a revision to the update schedule for Microsoft Flight Simulator.

The the latest World Update 3 untroduced an issue with flaps that produce too much lift across the board. Initially, the developers planned to fix it with sim update 4 in early march, but due to community feedback, they have now decided to release an hotfix next week.

World Update 4, which will improve France and Benelux, is now targeting early April (likely the first week of the month, since it was originally slated for March 30).

On top of that, we learn that the next Twtch Q&A in which the developers will respond to questions from the users and share future plans will be hosted on March 10.

Incidentally, You may want to take a look at our ongoing Microsoft Flight Simulator giveaway for a chance to win one of ten add-ons by Orbx and its partners.

Final Fantasy VII Remake Part 2 Will Be Directed by Naoki Hamaguchi; Tetsuya Nomura Still Involved

3 years 2 months ago

Following the reveal of Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade for PS5 and of new mobile games, Tetsuya Nomura himself shared an interesting detail about the second part of the main remake series.

In an interview on Famitsu, Nomura-san mentions that with three Final Fantasy VII-related games announced today, he has more projects in the pipeline than ever before.

Since the core gameplay direction has now been solidified and the team can see clearly where it needs to be improved, Nomura-san will hand over the position of director to Naoki Hamaguchi, who co-directed the original Final Fantasy VII Remake.

That being said, Nomura-san will remain involved with all the Final Fantasy VII projects as overall creative director. The basic way he’s involved in the projects isn’t practically changing much.

Before working on the Final Fantasy VII Remake as co-director, Naoki Hamaguchi was project leader on Mobius Final Fantasy, main programmer in Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, and worked in different roles on Final Fantasy XII, XIII, XIII-2, and XIV.

At the moment, we have basically no information on the sequel of the Final Fantasy VII remake, nor we know when we’ll hear more.

Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade will release on PS5 on June 10, 2021. No PS4 version appears to be planned at the moment.

Final Fantasy VII The First Soldier & Ever Crisis Revealed for Mobile

3 years 2 months ago

Earlier today right after Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade was revealed, the Final Fantasy YouTube channel dropped a couple of trailers for two new mobile games. Final Fantasy VII The First Soldier and Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis.

The First Soldier is a Final Fantasy VII battle royale game that will be launching on iOS and Android worldwide in 2021. The story behind the game is that the Shinra Electric Power Company is looking for a way to augment its current military forces.

The end result is this battle royale where soldiers are all battling to climb their way up Shinra’s ranks.

The gameplay appears to include guns, swords, summons, and spells. There are all kinds of elemental magic on display here like thunder, aero, fira, and barrier. We even see an Ifrit summon appear for a few seconds and lay waste to an opposing player.

Near the end of the trailer, we get a look at a handful of enemies that appear in the game. Bomb, Ripper are both confirmed by the trailer, but that’s not all. Scorpion Sentinel is also shown off briefly. As of right now, those are the only confirmed enemies and bosses for this game.
