Godfall Review

3 years 5 months ago
Godfall is a game that brands itself as a looter slasher. First of it’s kind and incredibly beautiful. A game where loot and combat are the main draws and there’s no doubt they are well defined but the overall experience falls a bit short in some respects but hits highs in others. Godfall starts off …

Immortals: Fenyx Rising: The Kotaku Review

3 years 5 months ago

Immortals: Fenyx Rising isn’t the game I was expecting. I was prepared for a big Ubisoft open-world action game filled with colorful vistas, Greek gods, and some elements inspired by The Legend of Zelda: Breath of The Wild. It is all of that, but it’s not just Assassin’s Creed: Hyrule. It’s a welcome streamlining of…

Romancing the Throne

3 years 5 months ago

In 1980, the Christmas windows at iconic London department store Selfridges featured a romantic tableau: two mannequins, a man and a woman, swept up in a waltz, underneath a chandelier, next to a festively decorated Christmas tree. He wore the classic Prince Charming costume, topped with sash and epaulets; she looked…

Immortals Fenyx Rising review - enjoyable but over-familiar

3 years 5 months ago

The cubes are probably my favourite thing about Immortals Fenyx Rising. The floating cubes. Huge cubes, taller than me, scattered nursery toys of the Gods. You whack them to start them up and then they glow and hover above the ground. In this state you can pull them about and even throw them. You can stack them and use them for all kinds of platforming puzzles. Clever stuff, inevitably. What I love though - and I think I do love the cubes a bit - is their playfulness. Prod them and they drift a little. Lob them at a target and they spin away afterwards with a sort of Space Odyssey laziness. Once I was standing on a cube and I got another one stuck underneath it, which meant the cube I was standing on started to tilt and threatened to throw me off. Immortals is always a lively game, but the cubes seem to really bring it to actual life. You sit up. There's a bit of mischief in them. A sense of surprise that is sometimes missing from the wider experience.

Immortals Fenyx Rising used to be called Gods and Monsters. It's an open-world action-adventure set amongst the Greek myths. You play as Fenyx, a demi-god who has washed up on the Golden Isle just as the monster Typhon has arrived to get revenge on the gods for his banishment. All fine. It's a game about hitting enemies with a sword and an axe, and gadding about from on high with wings made for you by Daedalus himself, before engaging in a little puzzling.

Pokémon Go spent all weekend hyping a mysterious raid egg

3 years 5 months ago

Pokémon Go has been teasing a curious raid egg, which is set to hatch later tonight.

The game's social media accounts began trailing the development on Saturday, with the first of four videos (to date) teasing a pink egg with a six-hour countdown. Fans excitedly waited six hours, to be greeted by a new video, now with a 44-hour countdown.

Immediately, fan speculation went into overdrive, and some lofty suggestions were made. Could it be Zygarde, the Gen 6 Legendary made up of many individual cells? Perhaps Niantic was introducing it cell by cell?!

People are using Xbox Series X/S to emulate PlayStation 2 games

3 years 5 months ago

Retro game enthusiasts are showing off the performance of many old PlayStation 2 games running on Microsoft's new generation of console hardware.

The video below, from Modern Vintage Gamer, shows several Sony classics running on the Xbox Series S, via the console's developer mode.

How does this work? Well, once in developer mode, Xbox hardware can run UWP (Universal Windows Platform) apps such as open-source retro emulation software RetroArch (thanks, VG247).

Empire of Sin review - intoxicating but overwhelming

3 years 5 months ago

There's a lot to like about this 1920s gangster sim. It's an intricately detailed game about a romanticised time. And as you would expect, it has gangsters in fedoras and fur coats and flapper gear, and Tommy guns and knuckle dusters and baseball bats. Those curvy old cars and delivery trucks rumble down the cobbled, often rain-slicked streets. And behind the mundane facades of everyday life - the grocery stores and laundry houses - the illicit industries roar. Speakeasies jump with music and laughter while breweries bubble in an effort to keep up. And you can see it all in gorgeous detail, right down to the fug from the cigar smoke and the glow from the lanterns.

Perhaps more importantly, you can get right up close to the people you control, which breathes personality into the game. You can get to know the gangsters you employ, like Big Fat Gibby Willard (that's his name!), who runs around in trousers and braces but no top, exposing his flabby upper half. He was great until a police officer strayed into a rumble we were having and he died. And now - yes - he's dead for good.

But there are loads of other gangsters I can hire, not that I can afford them all. And they all have their own stories, own ridiculous names, own traits, own capabilities. Some love each other, some hate each other. Some are better drunk than sober. Some are courageous and others timid. They all have their pros and cons. Some can even work against you as a mole, though you'll never know for sure. And you'll come to know those you hire like family.

Star Wars: The Old Republic players hold memorial service for Darth Vader actor David Prowse

3 years 5 months ago

There was sad news this past weekend for Star Wars fans, as David Prowse - known for physically portraying Darth Vader in the original film trilogy - passed away on 28th November, aged 85. Yet a number of Star Wars: The Old Republic players decided to mark the occasion in a rather wholesome way, by gathering in-game to hold a minute's silence for the actor.

As you can see in the video below, dozens of players flocked to Sith capital Dromund Kaas last night to remember Prowse, with many making their characters kneel while paying their respects. It seems the vast majority were able to hold the silence (aside from one guild recruiter, as ever), and the minute ended with a round of applause. "Thank you very much. No one is ever really gone," said player Jemorri as they brought the minute's silence to a close.

Once the solemn service was over, however, things got a little more raucous, with players letting off fireworks, bringing out their lightsabers, and having a boogie. With a fair helping of Sith lightning, of course.

Immortals Fenyx Rising Review

3 years 5 months ago

In Greek mythology, Icarus’s ambition led to his literal downfall when he flew too close to the sun and melted his wax wings. So yes, being overly ambitious does have its drawbacks, but so too does a lack of it. Immortals Fenyx Rising, for instance, offers a light and entertaining spin on Greek mythology that’s clearly inspired by a reverence for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Its setting, systems, and story are packed with references to iconic deities and legendary tales, but always with tongue planted firmly enough in cheek that it avoids coming off as self-important. All this flavour makes for a great set-up that’s complemented by fun combat, but the puzzle design across this colourful open world is disappointingly workmanlike. In a game about heavenly gods and fantastical monsters, the puzzles are far too grounded by earthly concerns.

Immortals’ most inventive touch is its storytelling. The journey of Fenyx, a mortal soldier shipwrecked on a mystical island, is presented as a tale told by an imprisoned Prometheus to Zeus, and the dynamic between the two is hilarious. The pair’s bantering narration interjects regularly throughout your roughly 30-hour adventure, helping to further the plot, provide mythological context, or simply crack jokes. And further on, Immortals does an effective job of balancing the focus on humour with story-driven character development.

The new Record of Lodoss War game's next Early Access stage has been delayed

3 years 5 months ago

Good timing! I just recently re-bought the Complete Edition of The Record of Lodoss War OVA on Blu-ray. I mean, it's never a bad time to watch the Lodoss War OVA again: it's a masterpiece.

That's exactly why Team Ladybug is bringing this timeless classic back in game form. Titled Record of Lodoss War-Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth-, this action adventure platformer is due out sometime in 2021. Right now it's in Early Access, and will remain there for a bit: as evidenced by a new update from the development team.

According to the studio, the new "Stage 3 and 4 update" will not hit its November target, and is instead aiming for a January 2021 deployment. In the meantime the team is looking at fixing numerous fan-requested issues, like additional language support, volume settings, controller rumble, a proper game manual, and additional status effects.

Having played a bit of the game thus far (it's $12.99 and worth a plunge if you're remotely interested in the IP or 2D action platformers), I'm really enjoying the fact that Lodoss War is back in some capacity. While the elf Deedlit is the perfect vessel for a game like this, I hope we eventually see the entire crew make an appearance in another project: Curse of the Moon style.

Zhongli - monikered here as "The Listener" - is a handsome and stoic young man contracted by the Wangsheng Funeral Parlor. Zhongli commands attention and respect with a calm and authoritative air, taking to the battlefield to casually dispatch his foes with his exquisite staff-wielding skills. The preview ends with a glimpse of an ultimate technique which sees Zhongli turn his enemies into literal dust, all without breaking a sweat or setting a hair out of place.

(Update) Here's a quick look at Fallout 76's new big free DLC update

3 years 5 months ago

[Update: Bethesda has posted an "everything you need to know" blowout post following the trailer below. It goes over everything from the main story, to shelters, to potential bundles.]

Microsoft got in on Bethesda at a decent time. Fallout 76 was in the rear-view mirror.

Everyone is abuzz about  Ghostwire: Tokyo, Deathloop, Starfield, and the next Elder Scrolls. Right now, they have basically all of the hype behind them and none of Bethesda's failures too fresh in people's minds. I also wouldn't put it past Microsoft to allow Bethesda to delay some of the more broken games and bankroll that extra development time for the sake of their reputation. With a strong lack of exclusives for this new console generation, Microsoft needs that rep more than ever.

But before we get too ahead of ourselves, Bethesda did just launch the already-in-progress Steel Dawn update for Fallout 76; which improves the slightly-better-since-Wastelanders-but-still-partially-barren open world with new questlines. Although the DLC just launched, the below trailer just a decent job of spicing up the world of 76, while reminding us that NPCs do in fact now exist.

The main focus is on Paladin Leah Remini Leila Rahmani, as well as Knight Shin, and Scribe Valdez. Choices will be made! Faction loyalties will be tested! It is a Fallout game after all.

Densha de GO!! by Square Enix Gets New PS4 Gameplay Showing SaGa Creator at The Controls

3 years 5 months ago

Today Square Enix revealed tnew gameplay of the upcoming train simulation game Densha de GO!! Hashirou Yamanote-sen.

The video showcases PS4 gameplay as the Switch version will come at a later date, and features a special guest.

We get to see SaGa creator Akitoshi Kawazu taking over the controls and aiming for the perfect stop on the iconic Yamanote Line in Tokyo.

If you’re wondering, the main point of the gameplay is to stop your train as close as possible to the mark without being late.

The latter is relevant for obvious reasons (and a point of pride for train conductors in Japan), while the former is also important. In Japan travelers will line up at marked areas on the platform. On top of that, many stations in Tokyo have barriers and gates that open only where the doors are supposed to be. Due to that, if a driver misses the mark even by a little bit, boarding and leaving the train may very well be extremely awkward or impossible.

Let’s just say that Kawazu-san may use a bit more practice before they put him at the controls of a real Yamanote Line train.

This is the first video of a series that will see popular Square Enix developers taking in the role of conductors of trains instead of development teams.

Re:ZERO for PS4, Switch, & PC Gets New Screenshots and Details on Return After Death & More

3 years 5 months ago

Today Spike Chunsoft released a new batch of screenshots and details of its upcoming game Re:ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- The Prophecy of the Throne.

First of all, you can gather relevant information while playing. Gathered information lets you create options during the briefing phase before a mission. Depending on which option you choose, your party members and their behavior will change.

On the other hand, if you don’t have enough information, you may only have one option or no options at all. As a result, your party members may be less effective and the mission may be more difficut.

The gameplay flow during missions lets you control Subaru and then other characters will act, with turns repeating over and over until the goal is accomplished or the number of turns allocated ends. The point is to accomplish the mission before you run out of turns.

Subaru has an action gauge that depletes as you move him. When it reaches zero, his turn ends. When it’s other characters’ turn, they act according to the instructions they received in the briefing mentioned above.

If Subaru dies, the mission ends. Yet, he can return from death as in the original story. This means the game will resume from the briefing and Subaru will retain all the information gathered before he died, opening the possibility to avoid danger and making different choices.

You can check out the new screenshots below.

Immortals Fenyx Rising review

3 years 5 months ago

Immortals Fenyx Rising

is the sort of name that you assume has a colon in it, even though it doesn’t. Apparently Ubi’s family-friendly mythical action-adventure had to change its name from Gods & Monsters after a challenge from Monster Energy, which is fair enough. After all, how many times have you tried to pour a refreshing energy drink into your mouth, only to discover you have inadvertently smashed part of the Ancient Greek pantheon of gods into your face instead?

The 9 best Cyber Monday gaming deals you don't want to miss

3 years 5 months ago

Some might consider Cyber Monday offers a bit like Black Friday leftovers. But, like a reheated curry, they can sometimes be even more delicious the second time around. That's what I hope to prove here, with a handful of the best Cyber Monday gaming deals that are still good as we come to the end of the yearly sales spree.

So, whether it's a Nintendo Switch, some PS4 or Xbox games, a brand new 4K TV or one of many top gaming accessories - grab them here before they expire.

Relatively light on Switch bundles this year as Nintendo favoured launching this Switch Lite offering. Luckily, it's still a good one, with a Switch Lite console, Animal Crossing New Horizons and 3 Months Switch Online. It's gone back up to full price at most stores, but you've still got a chance to get it for just £209 at Very.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla PC players have already found a way to get Store items for free

3 years 5 months ago

Well, that didn't take long. Assassin's Creed Valhalla has been out for less than a month, and PC players have already figured out how to access premium cosmetics for free - including some that haven't even been released yet.

Over on Nexus Mods, users are sharing a table for Cheat Engine (free memory scanning software - download at your own risk) that allows players to gain access to sets such as the Berserker, Valkyrie, Draugr and Huldufolk packs on PC. I tried it out myself, and after a bit of tinkering found I had suddenly acquired pretty much all the premium packs, which would normally cost around 2000 Helix credits each to unlock (a pack of 2300 Helix credits costs £16.99, if you're wondering). Or a lot of grinding for opals and waiting for Reda to sell each item individually, I suppose.

While this is already a little bit naughty, others have taken things a step further, using Cheat Engine to load currently unreleased items. On some forums users are sharing images such as this fiery wolf, along with Ezio's Brotherhood Outfit, which has not yet been made available in Valhalla. Judging by the hash lists being shared online, it's likely we'll see further unreleased cosmetics posted to the internet in the coming days.
