XCOM: Long War studio hit their own alien invasion game's Kickstarter goal in six hours

3 years 7 months ago

The studio behind the excellent XCOM: Long War mods have launched a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign to help finish their own game about alien invasion. Terra Invicta is not XCOM by a new name, mind. It’s a grand strategy game which starts with mysterious first encounters, leads to geopolitical manoeuvring as factions jostle for position and contend with alien influence, can develop into global war, then sprawls across the solar system with industrial colonies and spaceship battles. The devs say they plan to release Terra Invicta next summer, but could use a bit more cash to make it fancier.

Another World, one of the most ported video games of all-time, could soon have another format to add to its ever-growing list of platforms. Homebrew programmer Eric Majikeyric has released in-progress footage showing the seminal fantasy adventure running on the humble Commodore 64.

The video features the entire intro from the 1991 Amiga classic, scaled down to fit the C64's ultra-humble 8-bit processor. We then see various moments from the adventure replicated in Commodore form, including Lester Chaykin Knight's arrival in the strange new dimension, his first meeting with "friend," as well as a glimpse at the game's somewhat bleak finale.

Nintendo urges Switch owners to 'charge their devices once every six months' to avoid an 'unchargeable battery'

3 years 7 months ago

Batteries...they're a pain, am I right?

Just recently we were reminded about the dangers of the PSP's battery, now, Nintendo is giving us tips on how to maintain a healthy Switch console. The gist? Charge your Switch once every six months.

This past week, Nintendo of Japan's customer service Twitter account shared a helpful tip: "please charge [your battery] every six months." Simple, right? Nintendo says that the battery baked into the Switch "may become unchargeable if it has not been charged or used for too long."

You might be thinking "well I keep my Switch docked all the time!" And you'd be right: you're good. But if you ever get a second Switch and retire your original unit to storage, or upgrade to a Switch Pro and do the same, you might want to keep this tip straight from the horse's mouth in your back pocket.

The dangers of having a big collection of hardware! One tip I've heard from another game preservation expert is to schedule reminders every six months or so to take an inventory of all of your old systems and either charge them or inspect their batteries. As a kid, I used to experience that battery leakage/rot in my old Game Boys. Never again!

Call of Duty: Warzone - Activision Reportedly Bans 20,000 More Cheaters

3 years 7 months ago
Activision reportedly banned around 20,000 Call of Duty Warzone cheaters as the game's Season 6 update began. A report from Vice citing an Activision spokesperson and "people familiar with the matter" says that the publisher issued a ban wave on Monday, with some terminations related to the use of a popular cheating program called EngineOwning. The EngineOwning website now lists its Modern Warfare 2019 cheat as "detected" suggesting that Activision has successfully halted its use in-game, wiping the accounts of thousands of cheaters in the process. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/09/29/call-of-duty-modern-warfare-warzone-season-six-battle-pass-trailer"] The Vice report specifically mentions the case of streamer Nick 'Wagnificent' Wagner, whose account was permanently banned in the middle of a livestream. Sources told Vice that Wagner was using the now-detected cheat in Warzone, which resulted in his ban. Back in April, Activision banned over 50,000 accounts for cheating, noting that "Warzone has zero-tolerance for cheaters." The game's developer Infinity Ward also warned that "more banwaves" were coming in July. In other Warzone news, check out our article covering all the details you need to know about the bumper Season 6 update, which arrived in the game this week on PS4, Xbox On

Lenovo's foldable PC? No, I want a PC I can screw up into a ball and throw at the wall

3 years 7 months ago

Lenovo's ThinkPad X1 Fold.

Lenovo have started selling a device they proudly describe as “the world’s first foldable PC”, the ThinkPad X1 Fold. It’s a Windows 10 laptop with a bendy 13.3″ touchscreen that lets you fold the whole thing in half, and it starts at £2430. While I do know several people who are thrilled to tears by foldable tech, no, I demand scrunchable tech. We should see this as merely a small step on the way towards the technology we actually need: a PC I can safely screw up into a ball and throw at the wall.

Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will unveil its next fighter tomorrow

3 years 7 months ago

Nintendo will unveil its new DLC fighter for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate tomorrow, 1st October, at 3pm UK time.

Unlike the previous DLC character, Arms' Min Min, we know nothing of who the fighter might be, or from which franchise they may come.

Perhaps we'll see a representative of Monster Hunter, following the reveal of new games in the series for Nintendo Switch? Or maybe we'll finally get that long-rumoured Microsoft representative, after the continued cosiness between the two companies? Or maybe it'll be Birdo.

Games of a Generation sale now underway on the PSN Store

3 years 7 months ago

A few top names in the gaming industry have already given us their thoughts on this generation's best games, but now Sony has made its opinions clear with a range of discounts in its own Games of a Generation sale.

They've picked out some of the biggest, best or most influential games to come to the PS4 in recent years and put them up for sale on the PSN Store. Having had a look through, I wouldn't say it's the most complete or comprehensive list you'd imagine given the title - but it does feature a few tempting offers.

Headlining the sale is samurai adventure Ghost of Tsushima with its first PSN Store discount to £43.44. Not exactly a massively enticing price, sure, but if you head to ShopTo you can pick up a £45 PSN Wallet top-up for just £37.85. Pay using that instead and you'll get a much better saving.

Trials of Mana Version 1.1.0 update will include bunny slippers

3 years 7 months ago

Square Enix has announced that it will release the latest update for fantasy adventure Trials of Mana on October 14. Version 1.1.0 will add two new difficulty settings along set to test the mettle of the most hardened adventurers.

The new update will offer access to the new "Very Hard" and "No Future" difficulty settings. The former can only be selected in New Game+ mode and will offer a greater challenge than Trials players have faced to date. No Future, however, is a whole other bag.

This new mode will not only return the player to level one, but will also increase the strength of all enemies and boss characters, will add a time limit to each fight, and will limit the usage of items and certain special abilities, making this a true test of skill for Trials of Mana experts.

And your reward for conquering this relentless, bloodthirsty challenge? Bunny slippers.
