I am going to become a battery chicken farmer in Stardew Valley

3 years 11 months ago

I am not a very good Stardew Valley farmer. Really experienced players, who take their farming seriously, they know what’s up. They make their own almanacs, they intensively farm pumpkins or sunflowers to get the best yeilds, and they know how to place sprinklers for peak watering efficiency. I do not know any of those things.

My cruel predicament in Stardew is that really I would prefer not to be a farmer at all. Inasmuch as there can ever be a wrong way to play a game, I play Stardew Valley wrong, because I strive not for economic efficiency (thank god you don’t have to do crop rotation) but efficiency of activity. To whit: I cannot be bothered to keep tilling and planting and so on. I haven’t specialised my farm towards anything. You’d think I’d have given up on the farming dream by this point, wouldn’t you? But last night I had an epiphany. A chicken based epiphany.

Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai looks like a rollicking action-RPG

3 years 11 months ago

Dragon Quest is one of the more traditionalist video game franchises you'll find on the market. New games in the mainline series play nearly identical to those in the past. If you want new ideas and concepts to toy around with as you fight to survive against those classic Dragon Quest enemies, you'll need to look to the spin-offs of the franchise.

Infinity Slash (or is it Infinity Strash) Dragon Quest: The Adventure of Dai was announced this morning and it eschews the classic turn-based combat the series is known for in favor of a fast-paced action-RPG format. Serious fans of the series might recognize Dai as the lead character from the Shoñen Jump manga series that ran from the late '80s through the mid-'90s. Dai has been making a big comeback as of late with an appearance in last year's Jump Force, a new anime series set to launch in Japan this year, and three upcoming games: a mobile RPG, a card-based arcade game, and the console title seen in the trailer above.

Watching that video, I am totally on board for whatever this game has in store. The Adventure of Dai will launch in 2021, however, it's currently unknown which platforms it will hit. Based solely on that video and its launch window, the PlayStation 5 seems like a no brainer, but might it also hit the PS4 and Switch? Hopefully, we'll get more information soon.

Fallout 76's jolly Fasnacht robot parade is back on

3 years 11 months ago

The Fallout 76 clown car continued its strange journey this week, as the recently semi-redeemed MMO stumbled over another technical hitch.

The popular in-game event Fasnacht Day was expected to start on Monday, but was quickly stalled by a bug. Players reacted with great frustration as the event was taken down, depriving everyone of an hourly semi-charming, semi-creepy masked robot march. Bethesda report that all is now well, and the event went live again early this morning.

Atlus rolls out details for Catherine: Full Body's Switch port

3 years 11 months ago

Catherine is getting a new lease on life following its 2011 (!) release on PS3 and Xbox 360 with multiple editions these past few years.

After a long wait we got a PC version in 2019, followed by the "Full Body" remaster that hit PS4 and Vita in 2019. But Atlus isn't done resurrecting the classic relationship simulator and puzzler just yet, as the Switch edition is still slated for a July release.

That version will also be the Full Body package, which now has some Switch-specific details thanks to a new Atlus landing page. Most importantly, a demo is coming soon, so you'll be able to try before you buy. Also, a Switch Online membership is required to play online (duh), there is no cross-play with PS4/Vita, it does work with a Switch Lite (just in case), the download size is roughly 11.4 GB, you can play two-player with two single Joy-Con inputs and local play is confirmed (with two Switch units and two copies).

If you haven't experienced Catherine yet, the Switch is a great place to start (provided that the port is up to snuff technically). The stage-by-stage puzzle nature is great for on the go play, as is the idea of linking up for multiplayer.

Pac-Man is in Minecraft now and it's kind of rad

3 years 11 months ago

A few years back Microsoft introduced a marketplace into Minecraft: a place where content creators could share their creations and also share a cut with the game's publisher.

Although plenty of free Minecraft creations still exist in the free circuit, many have taken to said marketplace, delivering some great levels in the process. One of those includes the new Pac-Man DLC that arrived for the character's 40th birthday, from the studio Gamemode One. Live now on the marketplace here for 1340 Minecoins (roughly $8), the DLC is multi-faceted.

True to Minecraft form it adds a creation tool into the mix (make your own mazes), as well as two side modes: an exploration-based adventure in Pac-Town and a classic arcade rendition of Pac-Man in Minecraft form. Having dabbled in the DLC, it's not going to blow your mind, but it's great fun with the family.

The maze bit not only puts a new perspective on chomping pellets and skating by ghosts, but also adds a few unique things to the mix like power-ups (which have only been in select versions of Pac-Man) and progression (character unlocks). The best part is that everything is meshed together in a giant hub. If you want to create something you can head over to that room. If you're hankering for an arcade run it's a couple of feet away. Or if you want to head outside and quest in Pac-Town, you can do that too.

Just make sure all three of those activities sound fun before you plunk down your coins on it!

Watch footage of cancelled Half-Life spin-off Ravenholm

3 years 11 months ago

We'll never get to play Ravenholm, the cancelled Half-Life spin-off once in the works at Arkane Studios, but we can at least now see a little bit of it in action for ourselves.

The footage comes from The Untold History of Arkane, a fascinating feature length documentary from Noclip which speaks to several of those behind the project and shows extended sections of alpha gameplay.

Arkane, known for its more recent work on the Dishonored series and Prey, worked on the Ravenholm project as a standalone spin-off from Valve's Half-Life series.

Valve's attempt to resurrect Artifact begins this week

3 years 11 months ago

You're probably vaguely aware of the situation regarding Valve's Artifact, but here's a brief recap.

Released in late 2018 to a lot of promise from DOTA 2 fans, Artifact quickly crumbled and over the course of several months, its playerbase dwindled down to 300 or less on any given day: for a first-party Valve game, that was kind of unheard of. After a lull period Valve explained that it was going to turn the game around, and then we waited for more info...for roughly a full year. Now the time has come to "fix" Artifact, and Valve is going to start with a "2.0 edition."

Confirmed by Valve itself, "Artifact Beta 2.0" begins this week, with a "first round of invites" to select players. If you got the call you'll see "Beta 2.0" on your account, but there is "no timeline" for additional invitees: if you don't have it, you don't have it. Valve is going to focus on bugs and usability at first in terms of feedback, with other topics coming later.

If you were expecting to jump back into Artifact soon-ish, you should temper your expectations. It seems like it's going to be a while.

This Skyrim mod adds a 200-cheese treasure hunt

3 years 11 months ago

There's no such thing as too much cheese, in my book, so if you share this sentiment then boy do I have the Skyrim mod for you.

Published today on Nexus Mods for both the Legendary and Special Edition versions of Skyrim, Cheesemod For Everyone introduces over 150 new varieties of cheese to the land of Jarls(berg). The fun doesn't end there, however, as the mod also sends the player on a quest to collect all the cheeses, with a daedric artifact reward once all 202 objects have been found. It's a fondue fork that can turn enemies into wheels of cheese, if you were wondering.

To embark on this quest, the player will first need to complete Sheogorath's first quest (The Mind of Madness) to enter the Pelagius Wing and pick up the stale cheese crumb next to the book Cheeses of Tamriel. To keep it lore-friendly, cheeses from other areas of Tamriel are placed next to NPCs from those regions, while many can also be purchased from vendors - with some exclusive to certain cities or points of interest. New lore has also been added in the form of special cheese notes and journals, which appear on some of the more unique cheeses "to explain how they got there".

Analyst Suggests GTA 6 Could Be Released Between 2023 and 2024

3 years 11 months ago
Update: Take-Two has countered speculation, telling GamesIndustry.biz that the charts of marketing spend referred to by Cohen reflect commitments to third-party companies. Marketing for Grand Theft Auto would be undertaken by Rockstar, an owned subsidiary of Take-Two, meaning marketing for its games - including GTA 6 - wouldn't be represented on those charts. It remains unclear why Take-Two's marketing spend is predicted to be around double its usual level in FY 2024. [poilib element="accentDivider"] Original Story: Grand Theft Auto 6 could be released in Fiscal Year 2024 (April 2023 to March 2024), according to a financial analyst's assessment of the company's planned marketing spend – but there are other non Grand Theft Auto-related possibilities for that spend. Analyst Jeff Cohen (via VentureBeat) points to recently released financial information from Take-Two, parent company of GTA developer Rockstar, which discloses the company's minimum marketing spend for the next five financial years.

2K explains what's included in the Borderlands and BioShock Switch collections

3 years 11 months ago

2K is gearing up for a triple-release on Switch this week with the Borderlands, BioShock and XCOM collections: all of which are out on May 29.

To celebrate, the publisher has provided video rundowns of the former two collections, which showcase everything that's included. In short, these are all fully loaded with content, including basically all of the DLC released for all six games. Borderlands 2 sports the largest array of content, given that Gearbox released a ton of packs over the course of several years. The clips are short and sweet (under a minute) and have helpful text-based rundowns and picture collages to show you what DLC is in.

One thing that isn't listed though? Download requirements. As a reminder, all three BioShock "opening acts" are on the cart but add-ons and late-game content require a 31GB download according to the official site. Borderlands 1 requires a 6.6GB download on top of the cart, while Borderlands 2 and Pre-Sequel require a combined 35GB (no cart support). XCOM's ask is 24GB of space.

I wish you luck in clearing up your microSD card if you're getting all three.

BlizzCon 2020 has been cancelled, but plans to return as an online event next year

3 years 11 months ago

The game event cancellations are pushing even deeper into the year now, as Blizzard have announced BlizzCon 2020 is a no-go. The event usually takes right at the beginning of November, but due to ongoing concerns about the Covid-19 pandemic they’ve made the decision to cancel it.

“We’ve talked about different paths we could take, and how each one could be complicated by fluctuations in national and local health guidelines in the months ahead,” they said. “Ultimately, after considering our options, we’ve come to the very difficult decision to not have BlizzCon this year.”

Silent Hill is returning… in Dead By Daylight DLC

3 years 11 months ago

While the Silent Hill series still seems basically dead, and maybe that’s for the best, parts will return in Dead By Daylight. The 1v4 multiplayer horrorshow’s next DLC pack will introduce Silent Hill, with Cheryl Mason as a playable survivor, Pyramid Head as a killer, and the school as a new map. DBD has long had guest characters out horror films, from Halloween to Scream, so this is fairly natural. Hell, it’s better than Konami tend to treat Silent Hill.

Mafia 3 Definitive Edition currently lacks PS4 Pro, Xbox One X enhancements

The Definitive Edition of Mafia 3 has lost the game's enhancements for the PlayStation 4 Pro and Xbox One X - something 2K has now said is an error.

The regular version of Mafia 3 has long supported Sony and Microsoft's enhanced consoles with 4K visuals - 1440p on PS4 Pro and 1728p on Xbox One X.

Microsoft's store page for the game promises "full 4K". But after testing from our colleagues at Digital Foundry, the Definitive Edition on Xbox One X was found to currently output at 900p instead.

Street Fighter V: Champion Edition to receive final season of DLC content

3 years 11 months ago

Capcom has revealed plans to release one final season of DLC content for Street Fighter V: Champion Edition. "Season V" will add five more characters and three new stages to the developer's flagship fighter, adding to its now expansive roster.

No details pertaining to the new content were released or even teased, with the developer/publisher simply stating that more will be revealed late summer. This would suggest that Season V - as with previous seasons - will likely kick off at the start of the new year, giving Street Fighter V a final burst of adrenaline as the title enters its fifth year of knock-down, drag-out action.

Capcom then went on to announce a new Costume Contest. From now until July 21, budding coteries can design their own bespoke outfit for any member of the Street Fighter V roster. Two winners will see their outfits realised within the game itself. Grab yo' tape measure and head on over to the official competition website for further details. Speaking of style, every character on the 40-strong roster has received a new alternate colour as a "token of appreciation" for the community's support.

If you've played Xenoblade Chronicles 2, you'll unlock a small bonus when booting up Xenoblade Definitive on Switch

3 years 11 months ago

Well this was a nice surprise!

After booting up Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition on Switch for the first time, I noticed a little bonus pop-up right before I was able to take control of Shulk. Dubbed a "XC2 Player Bonus," you'll get a free 100,000G (gold) starting sum if you have a save file for Xenoblade Chronicles 2. These are the sort of things a lot of publishers are adding to games lately as "time saver" microtransactions.

Note that this bonus is optional, so you can choose not to take it. If you do, you'll get a huge leg up on the opening hours of the game, as most high-end armor and weaponry only costs a few thousand gold to start: allowing you to fully kit out your initial party members.

This bonus also lets you ramp up more quickly, as completing sidequests will only add to that total, cutting down on any need to grind for the first 20 hours or so.

Teaser Leak Suggests Star Wars Battlefront 2 Is June's Second PS Plus Game

3 years 11 months ago
A leaked teaser suggests that Star Wars Battlefront 2 will be June's second PS Plus game. The short video, which was spotted on Instagram and posted to twitter by Nibellion, shows a short clip of Star Wars Battlefront 2 and notes that the game will be "available with PS Plus this month." It was previously announced on Monday that PS Plus subscribers would receive Call of Duty: WWII as the first of June's free games, with more details to come later in the week. This leak looks credible and suggests that PlayStation may officially reveal June's full lineup soon. Star Wars Battlefront 2 has had something of a redemption arc following its controversial launch. We re-reviewed the game in 2019 after its initial 2017 launch, and found it delivered an "unrivaled Force-fueled multiplayer fantasy." Back in late April, Star Wars Battlefront 2 received its final "regular content" update in the form of the Battle of Scarif update, which brought the iconic set piece from Rogue One into the game alongside updated The Rise of Skywalker skins for the game's many hero characters. Samurai Shodown Neo Geo Collection dated, Samurai Shodown 2019 coming to PC June 11

3 years 11 months ago

SNK has announced that Digital Eclipse' Samurai Shodown Neo Geo Collection will be hitting PC and consoles in the very near future. Not only that, but Samurai Shodown (2019) is finally getting is long-awaited PC port and will arrive on Epic Games Store June 11.

The Samurai Shodown Neo Geo Collection is, as the name suggests, a compilation of the classic SamSho titles released for SNK's console throughout the '90s and into the early '00s. Included in the compendium are Samurai Shodown (1993), Samurai Shodown II (1994), Samurai Shodown III (1995), Samurai Shodown IV: Akamatsu's Revenge (1996), Samurai Shodown V (2003) and its expanded edition, Samurai Shodown V Special (2004).

But easily the most intriguing element is the inclusion of Samurai Shodown Perfect, a never-before-released revision of Samurai Shodown V that was originally destined to be the final Neo Geo release, but unfortunately never saw the light of day, becoming something of an urban legend among series fans.

The Neo Geo collection will include online support, a museum chock-full of over 2000 marketing materials, and a soundtrack player. Additional features include dip-switch settings, English and Japanese language support, and screen filter options. This release seems a must-buy for SNK heads and fight fans everywhere.

Kingdom Hearts TV series rumored to be in the works for Disney+

3 years 11 months ago

Insider murmurs are pointing to the possibility that Disney is currently developing a TV adaptation of mega-popular RPG series Kingdom Hearts. The rumours purport that the animated show is being developed for the Disney+ service at some point in the future.

The story first appeared on the Twitter account of The Cinema Spot's Emre Kaya, who claims that Disney turned to Kingdom Hearts producer Square Enix to create a CGI pilot, after The House of Mouse's original plans for a live-action adaptation fell through. This story was then backed up by the Editor-in-Chief of Disney Insider Skyler Shuler, who also suggested that the video games' original voice-actors will be returning to their respective roles.

All of the above sounds like a no-brainer project - Kingdom Hearts has an enormous fanbase and a wealth of characters and lore to draw upon - but it also sounds incredibly time-consuming and staggeringly expensive. It's not as if Disney doesn't have the money, it could buy me tomorrow (I'd be Director-in-Charge of Villainous Queens), but a full-CGI Kingdom Hearts TV series would be an incredible undertaking. I think, given the mammoth cast and fathoms-deep lore, a TV series might be a better fit for Kingdom Hearts over a movie. But for now, in any case, we'll just have to wait and see.

Kingdom Hearts III is available now on PS4 and Xbox One.

Mega Man started out on a Nintendo platform, so it only feels natural that Capcom bring as many games as possible to the Switch.

From now through May 31 at 11:59PM PT, you can find Mega Man 11, Legacy Collection 1, Legacy Collection 2, X Legacy 1, X Legacy 2 and the aforementioned Zero/ZX Legacy Collection on sale. Have You Played… Sherlock Holmes: The Devil's Daughter

3 years 11 months ago

I am a particular fan of the title of this game, because it sounds like Holmes himself is the daughter in question. Like it was his nickname when he played rugby at school or something. Despite that, Sherlock Holmes: The Devil’s Daughter is a thoroughly enjoyable entry in Frogwares’ saga of third-person detect ’em ups, notable for having good detecting elements, and also never having a version of Sherlock I wouldn’t go to bed with. Look at ’em both up there, Holmes in his shirtsleeves and Watson with his fashion facial hair. What good lads.

Someone should make a game about: Gormenghast

3 years 11 months ago

Somewhere along the way, my copy of Gormenghast got rained on. I wonder if a roof leaked in some previous house, or a chimney made a nearby wall a bit damp. Whatever. I went for it a few minutes ago and the book's pages have the wavering crispness of the once-wet. The cover is thickened around the edges, and the first few chapters have some kind of dark speckling on them advancing from one spread to the next. Some of the print is smeary.

It's perfect, really. A perfectly damaged book. If you'd asked me what the Gormenghast books were about when I first read them in my late teens, I would have said they were about a very dangerous dishwasher. I was a dishwasher at the time, and took a certain kindred thrill in Steerpike, who moves from the kitchens of Gormenghast to...well, that would be saying too much. Now, in my forties, I would say they're about aging, about a great mass of aging and forgetting and crumbling and ruination. Castle Gormenghast is ancient and tumbledown. I bet its own books have the wavering crispness of the once-wet. I bet there are dark speckled forms growing throughout the chambers.

I read once that Mervyn Peake's trilogy of books was not meant to be a trilogy - and was not really meant to be about a single place. I gather it was conceived as being the life story of Titus Groan, who is present but very young for most of what survives of the Gormenghast books. There are more than three of these books, but only three are canon, and I think I remember reading that actually only the first two have arrived in the manner that Peake intended. And so Titus Groan's story doesn't always have that much Titus Groan in it.

This Legend of Zelda Toon Link Dominoes Setup Is So Satisfying to Watch

3 years 11 months ago

Hey, I heard you like dominoes. I also heard you like Toon Link from The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker. In which case, YouTuber TheDominoKing has you covered.

TheDominoKing has showcased plenty of other domino setups before, including iconic characters like Spongebob Squarepants and Mario himself. This time around, he’s showing off Toon Link from Wind Waker, and the setup is just as beautiful and elaborate as you might expect. You can check out the full video embedded down below.

The setup includes Toon Link’s name, as well as the character himself. And, of course, the highlight of the video comes with pushing down the dominoes to create a hypnotizing effect showing off the effort and patience put into setting all this up.

The Legend of Zelda series saw a major resurgence back in 2017, when Breath of the Wild was released for the Nintendo Switch. Nintendo has since pushed out another Zelda game in the form of the Link’s Awakening remake last year. Both games are now available exclusively for the Switch.

Toy Soldiers 2 Announced Alongside Remaster Of Two Previous Games In Series

It shows toys fighting against one another, as was the case with the original game.

According to the game's site, it will recreate several moments from World War II. "Survive Dunkirk, siege the beaches of Normandy, battle the Imperial Navy in the Pacific, and beware the dreaded arsenal of secret Nazi weapons," the site reads.

It's not clear when Toy Soldiers 2 will release, but like the original you'll be able to both deploy and direct units while also taking direct control of forces to fight the enemy directly.
