Second Ubisoft Forward Stream Announced for Later This Year

3 years 9 months ago

Near the end of the July 12 Ubisoft Forward stream, co-founder and Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillmont announced the developer is not done and another stream is planned and coming.

The date for the next Ubisoft Forward wasn’t given, with the hosts simply claiming “late this year.” Which, could mean anything, but it would be a safe bet they will shoot for sometime before the release of next-gen.

As far as these non-E3 streams have gone, Ubisoft had longer reveals of their line up, and between Watch Dogs Legion and Assassin’s Creed: Valhalla, there were some very in-depth looks. The stream ran under an hour, but gave us plenty of new reveals, such as Brawlhalla coming to mobile.

There was even a further look at how Ubisoft will be handling the transition between current and next generation, with Phil Spencer coming onto the stream to announce that all the games shown as coming to next-gen will support smart delivery with the Xbox family of systems.

If you happened to miss today’s Ubisoft Forward you can find the footage here and below:

Far Cry 6 Officially Announced During Ubisoft Forward

3 years 9 months ago

Unveiled during the Ubisoft Forward event, Far Cry 6 was officially revealed, the latest installment in Ubisoft’s first-person series of cooperative mayhem simulators.

A cinematic trailer was shown off, which gave us a look at the suitably chilling atmosphere and nature of the game’s narrative. We also got confirmation of the games release date, which was nice, and you can expect to play it Feb. 18, 2020.

While welcome, the news wasn’t exactly a huge surprise, as details of Far Cry 6 were unfortunately leaked in the days leading up to the Ubisoft event.

Our charismatic villain this time around is Anton Castillo, ably played by the inimitable Giancarlo Esposito. Castillo is the brutal dictator of the island nation of Yara, who’s people chafe under his oppressive rule.

Far Cry 6 tells the tale of a modern-day guerilla revolution, and that kind of chaotic setting looks to be a great fit for the series. If the franchise’s past is anything to go by, expect there to more to Anton Castillo than meets the eye, as Far Cry is infamous for casting surprisingly relatable monsters as antagonists.

You may know Esposito from his iconic role as Gus Fring, the primary antagonist of Breaking Bad. Initially appearing to be the simple owner of a chain of chicken restaurants, Gus actually heads up a vast criminal network, and is capable of truly horrific acts of premeditated violence.

Hyper Scape Gets New Story & Gameplay Trailers; Launches Open Beta

3 years 9 months ago

Ubisoft has provided a wealth of new info on its new game Hyper Scape, offering prospective players info on its story and gameplay alongside the launch of its open beta.

During the Ubisoft Forward digital showcase event, the publisher and developer revealed via two trailers what the title will entail. In the first trailer, a main character revealed how the game is a battle royale multiplayer title set in a dystopian world.

People of every background and aspiration compete in a virtual competition for fame, glory and a chance at a new life in a civilization marred by less than ideally optimized technological strides.

Or at least, they did, before Hyper Scape players started getting injured in the real world or disappearing into the game. The cause of these phenomenons is unknown, and the only way to figure out the cause will be to compete in the game and delve deeper into its secrets.

This isn’t as dire of a task to play through as it sounds though. As the second trailer shows, players will have access to a fast and frantic shooter full of abilities to utilize, bonuses or hindrances decided on by real-life spectators and an ever-shrinking roster of more and more skilled combatants.

It’s an interesting concept, and those interested can view both trailers down below.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla will launch on November 17th

3 years 9 months ago

Ubisoft today announced a November 17th release date for Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, the next in their open-world murder simulator series. The date leaked yesterday but shh. And pretending that we haven’t been watching great reams of leaked Valhalla gameplay all week, they very proudly released a video showing and explaining more of the game. I suppose it’d be polite to act surprised by revelations of raiding, sieging, and sneaking as you watch the trailer below.

A Round-Up Of All Of The Big Announcements And Games Shown At Ubisoft Forward

3 years 9 months ago

Ubisoft usually unveils its upcoming slate of games at a live press conference held annually during the Electronic Entertainment Expo in June. With E3 being cancelled this year due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Ubisoft didn't make any announcements in June, and instead pushed back a month to hold a digital show called Ubisoft Forward, which aired today, and played out just like the company's press conferences, only with far less dancing on stage.

We also went beyond Ubisoft Forward to get our hands on many of the games. We spent some time talking to the developers behind the games to find out what players can expect from them, even for Far Cry 6.

Below is a roundup of the big announcements from Ubisoft Forward, along with links to our previews and videos:

Watch Dogs: Legion Gets A Release Date
The third entry in the Watch Dogs series is scheduled to launch on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on October 29. Ubisoft will also release it on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X at a later date.

Watch Dogs Legion Supports Xbox Series X Smart Delivery
If you purchase the Xbox One version, you will automatically get the Xbox Series X upgrade for free.

You Can Play Hyper Scape Right Now

3 years 9 months ago

Every big video game conference needs a "and you can play it right now" moment. Today's Ubisoft Forward event announced that Ubisoft's battle royale, Hyper Scape, is moving into open beta today - meaning anyone on PC can play. During the technical alpha, players had to hope for a Twitch drop to get access, but the game is now available to all.

A battle pass for cosmetics is in effect for the duration of the open beta, and anything unlocked will carry over to other phases and final launch. During this phase, a new game mode where it's every person for themselves (solo mode) is available. Previously, only 3-person squads were available for play.

If you're on PC, playing is as easy as logging into Uplay, downloading the game, and playing. It's a free-to-play title, so there's little barrier to entry if you are curious about the battle royale experience. Hyper Scape is expected to launch on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC this summer.

Check out my previous time with Hyper Scape here.

Ghost Recon Breakpoint Is Finally Getting A.I. Teammates In A Free Update

3 years 9 months ago

Click here to watch embedded media

On July 15, a new form of help arrives in Ghost Recon Breakpoint. If your friends aren't online or you don't trust random players, you'll be able to use A.I. teammates to join you on missions. The highly requested computer-controlled assistance arrives in Title Update 2.1.0, which is free and will be coming to PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Stadia.

The A.I. teammates can be activated and deactivated at any time, allowing you to continue playing solo if you want, and then summon them for a quick burst of firepower. A.I. teammates can perform sync shots, will try to revive you, and can be customized with different weapons, gear, and physical attributes. You can see the A.I. teammates in action in the trailer above.

A day later on July 16, Ubisoft is launching a new limited-time event called Resistance. A press release from Ubisoft gives a little context into the mission: "Nomad will support the Outcasts during their counterattack on Sentinel forces and assist them in their efforts to save prisoners, attack Sentinel outposts, and stop convoys looking for survivors." The mission only runs from July 16 to 29, and offers up 15 exclusive rewards, along with players impacting the presence of rebels in Auroa to create faction warfare between rival factions. New Gameplay Today – Watch Dogs: Legion

3 years 9 months ago

Click here to watch embedded media

Ubisoft revealed some more info about Watch Dogs Legion during its Ubisoft Forward event, giving viewers a better sense of what to expect from the open-world game. The big hook this time around is that you're able to recruit just about anyone you spot on the streets of London to the DedSec cause. Once they're part of the team, they'll use their own special abilities to help crash the system that's been oppressing the populace. I was able to spend a few hours playing it recently, and Leo and I go over some of the footage in today's NGT.

Leo has been looking forward to this one for a while now, and he has a lot of great questions as well as some observations on what's changed since its E3 2019 reveal. For my part, I hack a bunch of cars, recruit some people, and blow stealth opportunities with some comically telegraphed melee attacks. We had so much to show that we made two whole episodes! Enjoy!

Everything We Know About Far Cry 6

3 years 9 months ago

Today, we got our first look at Far Cry 6, the next entry in Ubisoft’s flagship series. This time around, you lead a guerilla revolution, fighting to free the fictional island nation of Yara from its brutal dictator. Ahead of the reveal, Ubisoft shared a presentation and let us chat with narrative director Navid Khavari. While the studio isn’t ready to talk about gameplay specifics, we were able to dive more into the setting and characters.

A Fight For Freedom

Welcome to Yara, a tropical paradise frozen in time, located in the heart of the Caribbean. The island has seen better days. As Ubisoft puts it: “Decades of economic sanctions have devastated the nation, leaving it impoverished and divided.” As its dictator’s practices get increasingly more disturbing (more on that below), you’ll get swept up in a modern-day guerilla revolution. Your journey to burn down this tyrannical regime takes you through the island’s lush jungles, dense cities, and beautiful beaches. Ubisoft is calling it “the most expansive Far Cry playground to date.”

Assassin's Creed Valhalla isn't really an AC game, but it's still great

3 years 9 months ago

Playing a big ol’ chunk of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla made me realise how much the series has changed since the first game in 2007. If you played Altaïr’s first adventure and then skipped straight to Valhalla, where big buff blonde viking Eivor is running around 9th century England, you probably wouldn’t realise they were in the same series. Assassin’s Creed Valhalla doesn’t feel like an Assassin’s Creed game, then, but I’m okay with that. Because it instead it feels like a really good Viking game where you smash people with axes.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla's Upgraded Animus Allows You to Change Eivor's Gender

3 years 9 months ago
Assassin’s Creed Valhalla will introduce new narrative elements for the Animus that provide lore justifications for new gameplay possibilities, namely the ability to switch the gender of the player character at will, as well as bring modern-day protagonist Layla into the historical open world. A recent hands-on demonstration of Assassin's Creed Valhalla I took part in featured the ability to swap Eivor's gender from a menu. But it turns out this isn't a demo feature to allow journalists to show both male and female versions of the character to readers. Talking to IGN, Valhalla’s Narrative Director Darby McDevitt explained - while avoiding any story spoilers - that this is a new gameplay feature to ensure both male and female versions of Eivor are considered canon. The feature is backed up by new lore that upgrades the abilities of the Animus, the machine that allows Assassin’s Creed’s characters to explore the memories of their ancestors. “You can go into the Animus layer of our game,” he said. “There's an option to change the memory stream. To explain why would spoil a long-running secret, but I will say that the whole reason for why you can switch [Eivor’s gender] back and forth fully embraces the often overlooked science fiction nature of our series.” “We've got this thing that's called genetic memory, and we've got this Animus,” he added. “What are all the ways you can play with that?

Watch Dogs Legion: How the Delay Improved the Game

3 years 9 months ago
Watch Dogs Legion was originally meant to come out on March 3, but saw a lengthy delay (and will now arrive on October 29) - thankfully, creative director Clint Hocking says that allowed the game to improve, even allowing the team to incorporate ideas it thought were out of reach before the original release date. Speaking to IGN, Hocking explained that the delay was due to "reasons external to the project", and described the mixture of emotions upon being told the release would be pushed back: "Obviously the day the word came down was devastating because you put yourself in the mental mindset of ‘We're going to close this and get it out the door.’ And that takes a little bit of time to undo but after a few days of stewing in it, it's like, 'Oh yeah, actually, this is great.

Preview: a year on, Watch Dogs Legion's “play as anyone” is so crazy it might just work

3 years 9 months ago

A press screenshot showing a DedSec operative spraying spray paint an enemy gang member's face

I don’t go round singing “Maybe It’s Because I’m A Londoner!” or anything, but out of all the places I’ve lived so far, London is the one I think of as home. And this so happens to be the setting for hacktion-adventure game Watch Dogs Legion, which is definitely not called Watch Dogs London despite how often I accidentally say that. It’s a dystopian near-future version of London, where the Union Jack has had yellow lines added to it for some reason, and all adverts are holograms now. I played a hands on at Gamescom last year and wrote about how fun it was to tool around London.

I’ve now had another go, driving and droning around for three whole hours. London is still a delight (I went on a little walk along the South Bank, past the aquarium, the London Eye and the National Theatre, which are all called non-infringing things like British Theatre), but the amount that Legion has improved since I played it a year ago is genuinely impressive. In particular, that weird “play as anyone” bit has been given a proper gussy up.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla Hands-On Preview

3 years 9 months ago
I guide my longship along the waterways of East Anglia, one of the regions of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla’s Anglo-Saxon map. Ahead is the shoreline of Beodericsworth, which will soon be the stage for one of this Viking-themed entry’s flagship features; raiding. With the blow of a horn, my crew begin bailing out, charging up the sands and crashing into the shields of the village’s unprepared guards. Wood splinters, blood gushes, and heads drop from shoulders. It’s exactly the kind of skirmish you’d expect from a Norseman raid. Inside, we hack apart the guard leaders defending the village’s treasures and take it for ourselves. Amongst our findings are two caskets so large it takes multiple vikings to get them open, filled with raw crafting materials. It’s a bounty that will, at the very least, get a knowing nod from Odin, if not a smile. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/07/12/assassins-creed-valhalla-hands-on"] Raiding in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla feels smaller scale than I expected, but is nonetheless good fun, and a vital part of fulfilling the Viking fantasy at the heart of the game. It’s also not the only way to pillage a Saxon settlement. The first time I approached a raiding target in a recent three-hour hands-on with Valhalla, I actually bailed out of the longship on my own, snuck around the back, and crept from guard to guard, taking them out silently.

Watch Dogs: Legion Hands-On — A World Worth Exploring

3 years 9 months ago

Watch Dogs: Legion follows the series’ established hack-heavy formula, but the new recruitment system adds a refreshing layer of intrigue underneath your run of the mill missions. All of which still have the fun of outsmarting enemies or finding the right angle to solve a puzzle, download a key/file, or wreak havoc from afar. But the most appealing part of Watch Dogs: Legion is finding and recruiting new people. From potential new weapons to lovable characters with fascinating backgrounds and recruitment missions, you have nothing to lose and everything to gain by expanding DedSec.

Watch Dogs Legion’s Degrees of Dystopian

Set in near-future London, the bombings DedSec was framed for have led to an authoritarian state in which Albion - a private military corporation - has taken over policing while an intelligence community, led by Signal Intelligence Response Service (SIRS), spies on London’s citizens. In an attempt to clear DedSec, you’re tasked with finding out who is responsible for the London bombings. Villains include Nigel Cass, CEO of Albion, and Mary Kelly, leader of an organized crime syndicate in London.

Far Cry 6 Officially Revealed, Coming February 2021

3 years 9 months ago
Far Cry 6 has been officially revealed for a February 18 2021 release date, and is coming to Xbox Series X, Xbox One, PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Stadia and PC (via Epic Games Store and Ubisoft Store). Free upgrades will be available on PS5 for PS4 owners, and Xbox Series X for Xbox One owners. After a leak this week, Ubisoft showed off the game's intro video and a cutscene introducing us to Antón Castillo (played by Breaking Bad's Giancarlo Esposito) and his son, Diego, who he's preparing for leadership of the totalitarian island state of Yara. Players will take on the role of Dani Rojas (who can be played as a male or female charcater), a Yaran guerrilla revolutionary. Incidentally, we got to speak to Giancarlo Esposito, who explained the backstory of the character he created, as well as the country her rules. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/07/12/far-cry-6-reveal-trailer"] The game doesn't just bring Hollywood quality power on the acting side. The score is by Pedro Bromfman (Narcos), and the opening sequence comes from Emmy Award winner Patrick Clair (Westworld, True Detective). Developed by Ubisoft Toronto (the first time that studio has led a Far Cry game), the game will take place across Yara, including its capital city, Esperanza - an unusual urban setting for the series.

Far Cry 6: Why We're Headed Back to a Tropical Island Setting

3 years 9 months ago
Far Cry is a series that radiates a tropical vibe - it's always been pitched as something like a morally grey adventure holiday (some cases more literally than others). So much so, in fact, that it's easy to forget how long it's been since the game's actually had us fight across a picture-postcard paradise, after trips to the Himalayas and Montana in recent years. With Far Cry 6, it seems we're heading back to the series' roots, with the Cuban-inspired, fictional Caribbean island of Yara providing a blue-skied backdrop for Far Cry's usual mixture of violence, surreal interludes and magnetic villainy. I spoke to the game's narrative director Navid Khavari, and asked what it was that drew lead developer Ubisoft Toronto back to a classic Far Cry location. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/breaking-bads-ultimate-villain-is-now-far-cry-6s-final-boss"] "I think it was two things," he explained. "There was a feeling among fans of being excited to go to a tropical setting once again. But also, I think for us, [there was] this idea of looking at revolution. And the moment you start looking at revolution, you think guerrilla warfare. And the moment you start thinking guerrilla warfare, you think Cuba." Khavari explains that the team visited Cuba for a month, spoke to real-life Cuban revolutionaries, and became fascinated with the idea of an island that became frozen in time because of forces outside of its control. "So when we were looking at making our fictional Yara, we loved this idea of the dynamic of 'here's an island that's been under a blockade – that has these old vintage cars, and is almost a living postcard'. And then you bring in a modern guerrilla revolution aspect - which is so Far Cry - inflicting chaos on this monolithic power structure. It felt like a perfect fit." That sense of frozen time will affect the gameplay too, it seems.

Over Five Hours With Assassin's Creed Valhalla

3 years 9 months ago

The King is dead … but for the Vikings, that’s merely a chance to build something new. When the Norse warriors first entered England in 873 CE, they discovered a land at war with itself. Several warring groups of Anglo-Saxons vie for power in a wild and untamed country. The Viking people may be fierce, but in England, they are also outnumbered. In order to survive, this band of Scandinavia settlers must make new alliances and friendships. To them, war isn’t a hardship, it’s an opportunity.

Leading The Charge

The tip of the Viking spear is a young warrior named Eivor. Players guide this capable hero throughout England to help them establish a new settlement for their kinsmen. As with Assassin’s Creed Odyssey, players choose Eivor’s gender at the beginning of the game and then guide him or her as they learn new abilities and acquire a nigh unending supply of weapons and armor.

Eivor’s journey eventually takes them to the territory of East Anglia where they make a pollical alliance with a would-be king named Oswald of Ellmenhind. Unfortunately, before Oswald is crowned, a rival clan of Danes led by a man named Rued invade and reportedly kill Oswald, leaving Eivor’s clan in the middle of hostile territory. Naturally, Eivor can’t let this stand. If Rued’s clan wanted a war with the Vikings, they got one.

Exploring Watch Dogs: Legion's stunningly accurate recreation of London

3 years 9 months ago

Ubisoft's open-world games are rather famous for their accurate recreations of real-world locations. Exploring the many past and present places they've produced is always a pleasure, but probing a position you actually populate? Now that's a different story.

I was absolutely blown away by how similar Watch Dogs: Legion's vision of a near-future London was when I played through three hours of the game earlier this week. There are of course many parts that have been changed, moulded and repurposed in order to fit in with the gameplay, but for Londoners there are countless familiar locations to visit and in some cases, enter.

I was even able to partially follow the walking route I normally take when heading from The Tower Hotel to London's Tobacco Dock arena for EGX Rezzed. Unfortunately the map doesn't stretch far enough to reach Tobacco Dock, but it does feature a highly realistic version of St. Katherine Docks Marina, which by the way is a lovely place to grab a beer and a burger after the show kicks out. (Aw, now I really miss EGX...)

Ubisoft has now officially announced Far Cry 6 for release on 18th February 2021, following an earlier leak last week.

Far Cry 6 Revealed With Intense Trailer About Dictator And Son Amidst Revolution

3 years 9 months ago

Click to watch embedded media

After a recent PSN leak, Ubisoft officially confirmed Far Cry 6 with a cinematic trailer that introduced us to the antagonist and new setting. Get ready to lead a guerilla revolution, fighting to free an island nation from its brutal dictator: Antón Castillo, who is portrayed by Giancarlo Esposito of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul fame.

The trailer, which you can watch above, opens with Antón handing his teenage son, Diego, a grenade and taking the pin out. Fearful and surprised, the son asks, “What are you doing?” “The pin simply holds the handle in place. It is only when you let go that the grenade goes boom,” he responds.

The pair walks outside, with the son uneasily clutching the grenade, knowing one false move could be deadly. As they do, Antón tells his son that one day he will be president like him. “Our people, they do not know how to be happy. They are torn apart by opinions, noise, indecision, strangled by their own freedoms. And even if you have love in your heart, even if you want what’s best for them, even if you only want to save them from themselves, they will hate you, Diego. Everything you say, do, believe will be wrong.”

Sam Fisher Featured in Brand-New Tom Clancy’s Elite Squad Trailer

3 years 9 months ago

Earlier today at Ubisoft Forward, we got another look at Sam Fisher in Tom Clancy’s Elite Squad. For those unfamiliar with this title, it’s a new military RPG from Ubisoft for iOS and Android.

This cinematic trailer showed off some teamwork, the art style, and even some destructible environments. It’s unclear if anything we see in this trailer is representative of the gameplay.

We got to see a little bit of Montagne charging in with his riot shield. And of course, we saw Sam Fisher rescuing El Sueño from captivity under the cover of an EMP blast.

After over a full year of waiting, it seems that we finally have a release date set for this title. And the good news is that you don’t have to wait much longer.

Tom Clancy’s Elite Squad is set to release on August 27 of this year. And if you pre-register for the game right now on Google Play or the App Store, then you’ll get Montagne’s tier-two weapon, the Semi-Auto M1911 pistol.

You can check out the full Tom Clancy’s Elite Squad trailer from Ubisoft Forward below.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla Possibly Points to Next-Gen Console Launch Window

3 years 9 months ago
Assassin's Creed: Valhalla will be released for Xbox One, PS4 and PC on November 17. We know the game will also be a launch title for Xbox Series X and PS5, presumably meaning those consoles will arrive on or after November 17. Shown off at today's Ubisoft Forward event, a gameplay deep-dive showed work-in-progress footage showing a female Eivor on a raid down English rivers, using a warhorn to set her crew on English village defences. Crews will assist on all raids, including to use siege weapons, and to carry heavy loot. The game will include more enemy types than any previous Assassin's Creed game, including some that work in tandem, or use environment objects to attack you (including dead bodies). We also saw a look at the game's settlement system, including its Alliance Map, which shows the alliances you've made across Britain.

Assassin's Creed Valhalla Launches On November 17

3 years 9 months ago

During Ubisoft's recent Forward event, the publisher announced that Assassin's Creed Valhalla is set for release on November 17. This places Ubisoft's massive open-world title out the same week as CD Projekt Red's Cyberpunk 2077, and gives some credence to the theory that one or more of the new consoles could release around that time.

Valhalla is set in 873 and places you into the role of a young Viking raider named Eivor who leads a Viking party looking to settle in Anglo-Saxon England. You can get a look at the gameplay below.

Ubisoft working to fix Uplay login issue as users try to claim free Watch Dogs 2

Sit back and enjoy the show!" I guess that means Ubisoft will end up giving Watch Dogs 2 to all Uplay users for free.

ORIGINAL STORY: Uplay is struggling to cope with users logging in to claim a free copy of Watch Dogs 2 during the Ubisoft Forward digital show.

Earlier this month Ubisoft said it would give away Watch Dogs 2 on PC for free to those who log into their Uplay account during the show itself.

Hyper Scape Open Beta Begins

3 years 9 months ago
Hyper Scape has gone into open beta on PC. The new battle royale is currently playable only on PC (but will come to consoles at a later date). The open beta will be broadly familiar to those who've played the previous technical tests, but adds a new weapon, a new hack ability, and include a free 30-tier battle pass. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/07/12/hyper-scape-story-trailer-ubisoft-forward"] A new CG trailer explained the story behind the game, explaining that in 2054, the world's population spends time in a virtual reality realm called the Hyper Scape, primarily playing a game called Crown Rush. However, Crown Rush has been hacked, which will presumably make up the game's ongoing storyline. A gameplay explanation showed off how the game will integrate Twitch votes to affect live games, and a developer update explained how costumes added each season could point to the ongoing story. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=hyper-scape-screenshots&captions=true"] Revealed earlier this month, Hyper Scape has since been running invite-only technical tests. We got our hands on the game, and said that, while it undoubtedly brings some fun ideas to the mix, "Hyper Scape may need to reveal another killer feature or two before it can guarantee itself a spot on the battle royale podium."
