Melty Blood: Type Lumina teaser trailer gives fans a brief glimpse of gameplay

3 years 1 month ago

I'm sure I wasn't the only fight-fan left both surprised and delighted at last week's news that the cult fighting game series Melty Blood was getting set to make its return. After all, it has been many years since the schoolyard sluggers last stepped into the ring. But it's true, the anime fighting franchise is returning in 2021, with the release of Melty Blood: Type Lumina.

Developer French-Bread has followed up its announcement with a brand new teaser trailer, giving us our first look at the sequel in action. There's a lot of filler here, and unfortunately the heightened presentation style hides much of the action, but we can see Melty Blood's trademark 2D anime visuals, as well as some pretty slick animation and special effects. It's just a start, but it's an encouraging one.

Two of Valorant’s Least Picked Agents are Getting a Major Buff; Patch 2.06 Notes

3 years 1 month ago

Riot Games has published the list of upcoming changes set to arrive with the launch of Valorant’s Patch 2.06, and there are major buffs on the way for two of the games least picked Agents: Viper, and Yoru.

Viper has continued to struggle in Valorant ever since the beta, and nearly a year down the line her pick rate still hasn’t improved. As a controller, her utility is bested by other Agents, such as Omen and Brimstone, who are more mobile and have the option of using their kit offensively as well as defensively.

Yoru, meanwhile, one of the newest additions to the Valorant roster, has had almost no impact on the meta whatsoever despite the early promise of his flashy-looking kit. Too often his teleport and ultimate are too easy to counter, while his fake footsteps and flashes aren’t particularly subtle.

Both Agents have long been in need of improvement (though Viper for considerably longer, of course), and this week’s patch certainly seems as though it’s set to deliver.

In the case of Viper, in fact, the changes could prove meta-shifting given just how much “decay” damage is now inflicted for anybody who touches her utility. Here’s the overview:

No Man's Sky: Expeditions Update Adds Big Shared Journeys

3 years 1 month ago
Hello Games has announced No Man's Sky Expeditions, a new update that adds multiple upgrades based around going on missions with friends. The update launches today. Expeditions' flagship feature is a new mode that features Rendezvous Planets; worlds where players all start in the same place and can embark on Expeditions together across the galaxy. These Expeditions can be planned using a new Expedition Planner menu, which will help keep everyone in the team focused. Expeditions are made up of phases, which are split into milestone challenges. While this does add focus, Hello Games promises that milestones are open ended and can be completed in any order, which preserves the freeform nature of the game. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2021/03/31/no-mans-sky-expeditions-trailer"] Working as a group, you'll be able to unlock mission patches as you complete milestones, as well as unlock new rewards with the community. While the co-operation aspects make up the main features of Expeditions, the update includes a large number of other, quality of life improvements. A new jetpack will be available, as well as the ability to call in walkers Titanfall-style. The UI has been updated and is now in 4K, and new colour-blind support is available. Twitch drop support has been added, as well as cross platform naming mergers, improved ping system, and better text chat. You can also unlock golden helmet and ship rewards.

Disco Elysium - The Final Cut Review

3 years 1 month ago
[Editors Note: Our original 2019 review of Disco Elysium has been updated to reflect the changes and improvements in Disco Elysium - The Final Cut.]

Like all good detective stories, what appears simple at first becomes so much more than that in Disco Elysium – and here it gets so, so much weirder, too. It takes the age-old mechanics of tabletop RPGs like Dungeons & Dragons and twists them in strange ways around a macabre tale of violence, poverty, and a society on the brink of collapse. Through sharply written dialogue and an expertly crafted world, it uses some unique game mechanics - such as debating against 24 different sections of your own brain - to create a story that will stay with me for a long time. And, somehow, it manages to make all of this fun and, surprisingly often, funny. Now with the addition of a fully voiced cast and even more side quests to embark on, The Final Cut makes an amazing game even better.

No Man's Sky adds a seasonal Expeditions mode

3 years 1 month ago

No Man's Sky just keeps growing, with no sign of stopping. Developer Hello Games announced a new update today called the Expeditions update, which brings a set of challenges in a seasonal format to the space exploration sim.

Update 3.3 brings Expeditions to No Man's Sky, which are a new way to start out a journey in a different mode from a regular save file. Every Expedition starts players on a fixed point in the universe, to complete a series of Milestones and goals to win rewards. It also seems like Expeditions are intended to be fairly social events, with players starting on similar planets and specific "Rendezvous Planets" established along the route to create hubs of activity.

Milestones are open-ended and, according to Hello Games, intended to give players a chance to explore different aspects of No Man's Sky. Several Milestones make up each Phase on the Expedition map, with each Phase finished offering a prize, and finishing an entire Expedition yields an additional reward.

These Expeditions are limited-time only, and Hello Games plans on adding new Expeditions regularly. At the end of the Expedition, rewards will no longer be earned and the save will convert to a Normal mode save. Any rewards earned in this mode can be redeemed for free on other saves in any game mode though, so that sick golden spaceship can carry over to your main game.

No Man's Sky adds galaxy spanning seasonal Expeditions and rewards in latest update

3 years 1 month ago

It's only been six weeks since the arrival of No Man's Sky's pet-themed Companions update, but already developer Hello Games is back with more, this time introducing seasonal, galaxy spanning Expeditions and accompanying rewards.

Launching today on all platforms, No Man's Sky's Expeditions update is intended to give players a new way to experience the ceaselessly expanding space sim, with each new Expedition depositing players - armed with a "wild and varied" collection of technology, customisations, ships, and weapons - onto the same planet.

An accompanying Expedition chart plots a course across the galaxy, which players are then encouraged to follow, completing challenges (known as Milestones) along the way.

Dead or Alive director Yohei Shimbori has left Koei Tecmo

3 years 1 month ago

Yohei Shimbori has left Koei Tecmo. Shimbori has headed up the 3D fighting franchise Dead or Alive for a lengthy 16 years, but has decided to take his leave of the developer/publisher.

"As of today, I have left Koei Tecmo Games," said Shimbori on Twitter (as translated by Gematsu). "I worked on Dead or Alive for 16 years, and while there were times I was pleased, there were also times I was unable to live up to expectations. I would like to take this opportunity to express my utmost gratitude to the many people who have supported and taken care of me. Thank you very much."

It's an honest and candid farewell message from Shimbori, who started with the Dead or Alive franchise as a designer for 2004's Dead or Alive Ultimate, and ends his time with the franchise as the producer/director of 2019's Dead or Alive 6. While I've always been a fan of the pacey, technical, and satisfying fighting mechanics of Dead or Alive, the series has steadily declined into repetition, with DoA 6 going all-in on the shopping cart mechanics.

Why Digital Games Could Totally Dominate Physical Formats In Just a Few Years

3 years 1 month ago

Analysts suggest that, in as little as six years, digital game sales could entirely dominate the video game market. It's a shift that’s been brewing throughout the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One console generation; but now, the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X generation could become the turning point where physical media becomes all-but obsolete.

Unlike other entertainment industries, video game fans have clung on to the nostalgic draw of boxes, discs, and cartridges — so, why is this acceleration happening now, after years of healthy physical game sales?

For collectors who love adding the latest releases to their shelf, this shift might be frightening to consider. But does digital's dominance necessarily spell the end of physical games, or will collectors show enough interest and spend enough money to keep physical media alive, albeit in a new, more specialized form? And will digital change game ownership, standard pricing, and collecting as a whole?

IGN spoke with several video game industry analysts to get their thoughts on this rapidly evolving marketplace.

[ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/will-you-go-all-digital-during-the-covid-quarantine"]

Digital Game Sales Are On the Rise

Overall sales of digital versions of video games have slowly been catching up to physical game sales over the last few years. Now, the scale is tipping towards digital more than ever — partially due to the trends set throughout the last few years, and partially due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic keeping consumers from shopping in-person — and pushing them towards digital storefronts.

How Sam & Max: This Time It’s Virtual! Brings The Comedic Crime-Fighting Duo To VR

3 years 1 month ago

Sam & Max have conquered comics, TV, and games in the past. Now the duo is returning for the first time in over a decade with Sam & Max: This Time It’s Virtual! As the name suggests, the Freelance Police are making the jump to VR for an all-new adventure. The game comes to Oculus Quest this summer (and other headsets in the following months) and is being developed by HappyGiant with help from Sam & Max creator Steve Purcell, renowned artist Peter Chan, and other LucasArts veterans.

Two questions you’re probably asking yourself are: “What are Sam and Max up to this time?” and “Why VR?” We sat down with Mike Levine, CEO of HappyGiant, and lead designer Mike Stemmle, formerly of LucasArts and Telltale Games, to get the skinny on Sam & Max’s next adventure, the new character that players control, and how the team hopes to enhance the adventure game formula using VR’s more immersive perspective.

Marvel's Avengers is getting MCU costumes, 'for purchase with credits'

3 years 1 month ago

Ah man, looking at how different publishers handle different Marvel games is night and day.

Some are probably more beholden to the license and answer to the Mouse. Others likely are given more creative freedom. Marvel's Avengers from Square Enix seems to be in a really weird spot, sandwiched between the whims of the MCU and deals with Sony for their Spider-Man exclusive. The game suffered for it, in any case.

Take these two Marvel promotions for instance. Spider-Man just got a free suit this week. Meanwhile, Marvel's Avengers is teasing "new MCU costumes" that you have to pay credits for. Credits that can be earned or purchased outright with real money.

In any case, "nameplates, outfits inspired by the MCU, and a deadly HARM Room hacked by Yelena Belova (that's Florence Pugh's character in the upcoming MCU Black Widow film)" are coming to the game "this spring." It's another in a string of glacial pace updates that a lot of people are tired of waiting for.

On top of the confusing PlayStation upgrade process, it hasn't been a good month for the game. It arguably hasn't been a good year for it.

Hitman 3's new free Starter Pack lets everyone try Dubai for a week

3 years 1 month ago

As they did with the two games before, Io Interactive have released a free 'Starter Pack' sorta-demo of Hitman 3. It currently offers the first game's tutorial mission, the second game's first mission, and—for one week only—the third game's first mission, set in Dubai. But it's also a barebones edition of Hitman 3, and lets owners of the first two games import their locations to play them in full with the benefit of Hit 3's new features. Something for everyone.

505 Games purchases Ghostrunner IP for a little under $6 million

3 years 1 month ago

505 Games has announced that it now owns the cybernetic slice 'n' dice franchise Ghostrunner, having purchased the new IP from publisher All-In! Games for a mighty €5 million, roughly $5.9 million USD.

The Italian publisher worked alongside All-In! on the initial release of Ghostrunner back in the summer of 2020, but was apparently unwilling to outright purchase the IP for its own catalog. Unsurprisingly, a change of heart came about following Ghostrunner's release, which saw the tower-climbing title recover its production costs in a single day, before going on to shift over 500,000 copies by the end of the year.

Pokemon Go Creator Releasing a 5G-Exclusive Game Demo

3 years 1 month ago
Pokemon Go developer Niantic is releasing a 5G-exclusive game demo called Codename: Urban Legends. The demo is part of Niantic's strategy to build a "planet-scale AR platform", according to a new blog post from the developer. Codename Urban Legends has been created to test what an immersive multiplayer experience would look like when it leverages 5G technology. Codename: Urban Legends looks like a far more involved social augmented reality game than the likes of Pokemon Go. "5G multi-access edge computing (MEC) can handle up to 10x simultaneous players compared to 4G," says Niantic. "This is just the beginning of how we can augment the world around us faster and experience adventures, together." [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2018/06/28/niantic-real-world-ar-occlusion-with-pikachu-and-eevee"] In Niantic's video demonstration of Urban Legends, you can see a family simultaneously fighting monsters in a wide-open space, dodging projectiles and shooting at augmented creatures with their phones. This is what Niantic is calling "large-scale multiplayer on 5G." The developer has partnered with Deutsche Telekom, Globe Telecom, and Verizon to network test and help realise the technology. The game has been built on the platform that powers Niantic's other games, like Pokemon Go and Ingress, and will use the "ultra-low latency and high bandwidth capabilities" of 5G to its advantage. "By teaming up, players cast magic spells to blast monsters and rescue mythical allies, including Doty, the original Niantic Explorer," the blog post reads. It's not clear when players will be able to check out Codename: Urban Legends, but we'll be sure to let you know when it's available.

The new voices in Disco Elysium - The Final Cut make it feel more like a tabletop experience than ever

3 years 1 month ago

The delightfully unusual detective role-playing game Disco Elysium is finally on console. The Final Cut version of the game arrived yesterday on PlayStation machines (4 and 5), the App Store, Stadia and PC (a free update if you already own the base game), and there's an Xbox version due to follow this summer.

I've been playing it on PlayStation 5, and generally it works well. I haven't noticed the frame-rate issues I've seen reported elsewhere, so presumably they really have been fixed. But I have come across the object interaction bug, which sometimes doesn't register your interactions, or doesn't quite trigger them. Pressing the button again usually rectifies the issue, so it's sometimes annoying but rarely more. Loading times seem fine on PS5, though I wonder what they're like on PS4, and I haven't seen any other bugs, though I'm only early in the game (code arrived late).

But the most notable new addition is full voice acting. Disco Elysium is a wordy game and only patches of it were voiced originally, meaning most of the time you were reading a text box on the right-hand side of the screen. And though the words were (and are) delightful - Disco Elysium has an outrageous sense of humour, and a lovely way of voicing thoughts that really ought to stay in your head - the sheer amount of them could be wearying. This also made the game somewhat quiet and still, as it waited for you to read and catch up. But the addition of audible voices has a powerful effect on this.

Oh hey look, a free new suit for Spider-Man: Miles Morales

3 years 1 month ago

Insomniac has done a pretty good job of handling the Spider-Man franchise.

I mean, the first game made some waves, but it doesn't get enough credit for how breezy its open world is. It's the kind of sandbox you can finish in the time it takes to fully complete some other bloated open world romps, and that sort of restraint should be commended.

While some lament the fact that Spider-Man: Miles Morales was shorter, I celebrated it. Once again I found myself hitting that 100% completion mark and not stressing it. The injection of free DLC costumes doesn't hurt either.

As of now, you can grab a new update for Miles Morales, which includes the classic free costume add-on. In this case it's the Advanced Tech Suit, amid "various fixes" for the game itself. Insomniac also flaunts "realistic muscle deformation for select suits," which is a PS5 exclusive feature.

Remember when Microsoft kept touting "the power of the cloud" for basically every presentation? Well, now we just have the power of new consoles to fuel things like realistic muscles.

Cyberpunk 2077's online portion no longer standalone

3 years 1 month ago

CD Projekt's big online Cyberpunk 2077 multiplayer portion will no longer be launched as a standalone release.

The developer announced the change yesterday in a conference call held following the company's big strategy update, where it briefed investors on how it will continue both Cyberpunk and Witcher franchises over the next few years.

Yesterday's strategy update vaguely mentioned "reconsidered" multiplayer plans for Cyberpunk 2077, which CD Projekt boss Adam Kiciński was then asked to clarify.

Mortal Kombat movie pushed back a week, will premiere on April 23

3 years 1 month ago

Warner Bros. has announced that its upcoming adaptation of NetherRealm Studios' Mortal Kombat has had its release date pushed back by one week. The martial-arts action-adventure will now launch in theaters and on paid streaming service HBO Max on April 23.

As reported by Variety, Warner Bros. has rearranged the date in order to provide breathing room between MK and kaiju-smasher Godzilla vs. Kong, which hits both big and little screens today. Variety also suggests that Warner Bros. is holding off in anticipation of California relaxing lockdown laws in the coming weeks, which could see an allowance of increased capacity in cinemas. If you fancy cramming yourself into a crowded room with a gaggle of complete strangers at the very earliest opportunity possible, good luck to ya.

It has been a long road to fruition for the Simon McQuoid-directed video game adaptation, which has pushed through production and scheduling woes - as well as COVID-19 pandemic restrictions - to make it to next month's release. While fans were left waiting an extraordinarily long time to see the movie's first trailer, it left many in the kommunity feeling cautiously optimistic that Mortal Kombat will deliver a relatively good time. I don't think anyone's expecting The Dark Knight here, but as long as the action is solid and the journey is fun, then the wait will have been more than worth it.

Oculus Quest 2 Has Already Outsold Every Other Oculus Headset Combined

3 years 1 month ago
The Oculus Quest 2 has outsold every other Oculus headset combined. The news arrives as part of a Bloomberg video interview with Andrew Bosworth, VP of Augmented and Virtual Reality at Facebook. When asked about virtual reality hitting the mainstream, Bosworth said that it was "starting to happen right now," citing the Oculus Quest 2's sales indicating a shift from early adopters to mainstream success. "Oculus Quest 2, in just a few months on the market, has outsold not just its predecessor but all of its predecessors combined," Bosworth said. [widget path="global/article/imagegallery" parameters="albumSlug=oculus-quest-2&captions=true"] The Oculus Quest 2 launched in October of 2020, which means it is currently only five months old. Regardless, the cheaper, wireless head-mounted display has already outsold all of its predecessors, including the Oculus Rift, Oculus Rift S, Oculus Go and the Oculus Quest. The Quest 2 launched and superseded its predecessor in technology with a higher refresh rate and resolution, but actually dropped the base price of the 64 GB device to $299, down from $399. This was certainly a move made by Facebook to make VR more accessible to mainstream users. Here's our review of the Oculus Quest 2, which we scored a 9, calling it "an amazing VR headset." Shortly after launch, we learned that users will lose all of their Oculus games if they delete their linked Facebook account.  [poilib element="accentDivider"] Jordan Oloman is a freelance writer for IGN. Follow him on Twitter.

Police Shut Down $76 Million Cheat-Making Operation

3 years 1 month ago
Chinese police in the city of Kunshan have shut down a video games cheat operation that had amassed $76 million in revenue. The operation, called “Chicken Drumstick”, ran a website that sold cheats to players via subscriptions, according to a report from BBC. These subscriptions, which provided cheats for games such as Overwatch and Call of Duty Mobile, started at approximately $10 per day, and ran up to $200 per month. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2017/04/03/the-state-of-cheat-codes-game-scoop"] Kunshan police collaborated with Chinese gaming company Tencent to raid the Chicken Drumstick operation, where ten people were arrested and $46 million worth of assets were seized. Among the items seized were a number of luxury sports cars. Cheat manufacturing on an industrial scale has been a problem in gaming for a number of years, spanning from wall hacks for shooters to gold farms for MMOs. Kushan police believe Chicken Drumstick to be the “world’s biggest” cheating operation case because of the huge amount of money involved. The cheats offered by Chicken Drumstick - the sort used to give you an unfair advantage in PvP games - simply makes playing games worse for everyone. That’s not to say there are not acceptable cheats, though; games like GTA: San Andreas have developer-coded cheats built into the game to make things fun for the player. And if you’re stuck in a game and need to ‘cheat’ by looking up the answer, our IGN Game Help page probably has you covered.
