Breaking Down Cyberpunk 2077 and CDPR's Future

BEYOND! On this week's episode of IGN's weekly PlayStation show, host Jonathon Dornbush is joined by Simon Cardy, Zach Ryan, and special guest StreetGrind to talk about all the latest PlayStation news...except for the new PlayStation Plus lineup, of course. (We'll catch your news on time, one day, Sony!) Instead, the cast jumps into the confirmation that PS3, PS Vita, and PSP PSN stores will be closing down in the coming months, Ratchet and Clank's PS5 patch and Sony's rollout of PS4 to PS5 upgrade patches, and more. But our centerpiece discussion is around all the Cyberpunk 2077 and CD Projekt Red news of the week. From Cyberpunk's new, massive 1.2 patch to CDPR's promise to market games on shorter timelines in the future and much more, we discuss how the company plans to move forward after the troubled launch of 2077 and its continued absence from the PSN store. (Knowing our luck, we expected Cyberpunk to become available again on PS4 in between when we recorded and when this episode posted.) Watch the new episode above! Among Us Airship Map Now Available; Dev Details Future Features

Among Us developer InnerSloth announced the game’s fourth map, The Airship, is now available on all platforms in a free update today.

The Airship is the game’s biggest map, and has exclusive features and new content over the previous maps. It contains new tasks such as jewel polishing and emptying trash, ladders and moving platforms to get around, and the ability to choose the room to start in.

A number of free hats including a heart pin, angry eyebrows, unicorn head, rubber glove, and more are available with the new update. Players can also purchase the Airship Skin Bundle with 16 skins that each come with a custom kill animation.

The update also brings and an account system and reporting tools, though account linking between multiple platforms will be “coming soon,” as revealed earlier this year.

Developer InnerSloth announced new features coming to Among Us in future updates such as a “full art style revamp” and larger lobbies. The game’s art style will be updated with “cleaner lines and an easier animation process,” while lobbies will increase from 10 to 15 players.

The studio plans to make more frequent, transparent updates about the development process and behind-the-scenes, and will make a public roadmap for the game “at some point.”

Wildfire Swap is out now and looks super cute despite the grim topic

What a grand day it is when past me gives present me the gift of having put us on the mailing list for a swell little indie game. As past me knows, I do really enjoy a cute but tricky puzzler, which is just what Wildfire Swap looks to be. Only you can stop these wildfires by swapping tiles on the board to contain them without letting houses catch fire. This puzzler is out now, so you can go scratch your head over these grim but cute conundrums yourself.

The Elder Scrolls Online Is Coming To PS5 And Xbox Series X With New-Gen Enhancements

In the shadow of its big Oblivion expansion, The Elder Scrolls Online makes the jump to PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S this summer with the Console Enhanced edition. As the name implies, this updated port takes advantage of the current console’s power by allowing ESO to run natively on those systems, giving the game’s performance and graphical fidelity a big shot in the arm.

The update arrives on June 8 and comes free of charge to those who own the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions of ESO. Console Enhanced bumps the game’s framerate from 30 frames per second to 60 while playing in Performance Mode. Fidelity Mode nets you native 4K visuals and 30 fps. According to the official press release, load times have also been cut in half.

ESO’s draw distance has also been nearly doubled across the board, so you can gaze even further out into Tamriel’s horizon. Other graphical perks include improved reflections and shadows, circular depth of field for more realistic background views, as well as high-resolution textures and updated antialiasing. It also sports better ambient occlusion and screen space global illumination for improved lighting.

Sam & Max VR adventure This Time It's Virtual heading to Oculus Quest in June

Wise-cracking anthropomorphic crime-fighting duo Sam & Max will be making their VR debut on Oculus Quest this June in developer HappyGiant's brand-new adventure outing Sam & Max: This Time It's Virtual, with releases on Steam, Viveport Infinity, and PSVR to follow.

Sam & Max: This Time It's Virtual is the first entirely new video game outing for the Freelance Police since Telltale's third season of Sam & Max adventures, The Devil's Playhouse, in 2010. It sees the dubious dog and bunny duo indulging in appropriately outlandish VR-enabled mini-games as they explore Cap'n Aquabear's rotting theme park.

"Even multimedia evil-slappers like Sam & Max could use a hand," explains HappyGiant of its new VR endeavour, "and this time they're using the incomprehensible magic of virtual reality to invite the player into their off-kilter world for a furious day of monster-slaying, obstacle courses, responsibly discharged firearms, and, of course, saving the entire freaking world."

Elder Scrolls Online: Console Enhanced Set To Release on PS5, Xbox Series X|S This June

Earlier today in a press release from Bethesda Softworks, it was revealed that the enhanced version of The Elder Scrolls Online will be releasing for current-gen consoles on June 8.

If you’re currently playing The Elder Scrolls Online on PS4 or Xbox One, there’s some good news. You’ll be able to get access to ESO: Console Enhanced on PS5 or Xbox Series X|S for no extra cost.

As you would expect from the name, ESO: Console Enhanced features better graphics than the original console version. But that’s not the only improvement in this new version.

There are now two graphics modes that you can choose from in the settings menu (Performance or Fidelity). The Performance Mode runs the game at a steady 60FPS and Fidelity Mode is all about getting the best 4K visuals running at 30FPS.

The press release also detailed even more visual upgrades that are coming in the form of, “…improved reflections, shadows, depth of field, ambient occlusion with screen space global illumination, along with updated antialiasing and unlocked textures.”

And one of the other biggest improvements is to the time you’ll be sitting around doing nothing. That means load times will nearly be cut in half on both current-gen consoles thanks to the speed of their SSDs.

But that’s not all there is to look forward to in The Elder Scrolls Online in 2021. The new Blackwood chapter is just a part of the overarching Gates of Oblivion story that will carry throughout the year.

Dead or Alive Xtreme: Venus Vacation English Version Celebrates 2nd Anniversary With Freebies Aplenty

The English version for Steam of the popular free-to-play game Dead Or Alive Xtreme: Venus Vacation is celebrating its second anniversary.

The game is well-known for its… aggressive monetization tactics, but it isn’t always like that. At times there are freebies to be had.

First of all, there is a  large celebratory gacha that includes every girl (excluding the latest addition Monica) with two different outfits which will also be destructible.

This means that if you haven’t unlocked the newest entries in the roster up to Kanna, you have a chance over the next two weeks, as this will be available until April 13.

To sweeten the deal, the SSR chance is 3.3% and every player will get a free 10-draw ticket for the new gacha as a daily login bonus for up to seven days within the duration of the event.

It’s worth mentioning that this is not valid for the Japanese version of the game, which had the same celebration all the way back in November 2019 and actually already celebrated the third anniversary.

On the other hand, if you’re playing that one, you get to celebrate Sayuri’s birthday in her own dedicated event. Yet, you won’t get any freebie, but you’ll have to pay real money if you want to participate. Birthdays in Dead Or Alive Xtreme: Venus Vacation are pricey affairs.

The Best Metroidvanias

The genre of the “Exploration Platformer,” or “Platformer Adventure,” or you know what, let’s just call it like it is, the Metroidvania - or just “Metroid-like” if you’re a purist - is one that has truly blossomed over the last decade or so and spawned some truly incredible 2D games, several of which even give the forefathers of the genre a run for their money. But for this list, we wanted to leave Samus and Alucard out of it and let the non-Metroids and Castlevanias have some time in the spotlight. So with that in mind, let’s take a look at our picks for the top 10 Metroidvanias, that aren’t actually a Metroid or Castlevania. [poilib element="accentDivider"]

10. Shadow Complex

Hitting Xbox Live Arcade back in 2009, Shadow Complex was the right game at the right time to reinvigorate the Metroidvania genre. An excellent blend of sci-fi action with a compelling story, satisfying progression, and its 2.5-D perspective offered some of the best graphics we’d seen in the genre to date. It was a refreshing update to a beloved style of game that, at least in 2009, seemed to have fallen out of favor with developers and the public at large. It would go on to be one of the highest-selling Xbox Live Arcade games of all time, and a remastered version hit PC in 2015 and consoles the next year.

9. Blasphemous

Blasphemous introduces you to the sprawling and hauntingly beautiful Cvstodia, a 16-bit world teeming with secrets in every corner. Despite its beauty, it is also a world overrun by truly horrific and difficult bosses blocking your path. And to make matters more trying – and ultimately more rewarding– Blasphemous tantalizes players with items and upgrades often dangling just out of reach. These are almost always accompanied by an inactive piece of the environment that becomes instantly recognizable, goading you into a search for a way to turn bundles of roots into bridges, or blood trails into platforms.

The Evil King and The Great Hero for PS4 & Nintendo Switch Gets Adorable New Trailer

Today Nippon Ichi Software released a new trailer for its upcoming game Warui Oosama to Rippana Yuusha, which translates as “The Evil King and The Great Hero.”

The trailer shows both story and gameplay, providing a look at the mechanics that will prove familiar to those who played The Liar Princess and the Blind Prince.

We see how you can interact with the protagonist’s companions and use their dedicated actions to do things you can’t do.

Konko the snow fox can dig up items from the ground. Sakasa can use her knives to drop items too high for the hero to reach. Princess Flora can use her umbrella to float riding the wind and over obstacles.

They will also become stronger with time, acquiring new abilities. The hero will be able to slash enemies with a sword. Konko can attack enemies in a line. Sakasa can use a wind power to attack all enemies and quicken up allies. Flora will increase her avoidance.

CD Projekt Says Leaked Cyberpunk 2077 Add-Ons Aren't DLC Names, So What Are They?

Earlier this week the Cyberpunk 2077 subreddit uncovered several names from the Epic Games Store initially believed to be the names of upcoming Cyberpunk 2077 content. In an email to IGN a CD Projekt representative confirmed that these names “are not DLCs for Cyberpunk 2077.” This begs the question, what are they? In a thread on the Cyberpunk 2077 subreddit, user u/PricklyAssassin shared images of a now-gone Add-on page for Cyberpunk 2077 in the Epic Games Store with a series of blank listings for what looks like Cyberpunk 2077 content. This add-on page apparently appeared on the Epic Games Store shortly after this week’s 1.2 patch but has since been removed. [ignvideo url="https://www.ign.com/videos/2020/12/07/cyberpunk-2077-review"] The screenshots showed the following listings:
  • Ripperdocs Expansion
  • Body Shops Expansion
  • Fashion Forward Expansion
  • Gangs of Night CIty
  • Body of Chrome
  • Rides of the Dark Future
  • The Relic
  • Neck Deep
  • Night City Expansion
  • Expansion Pass
[poilib element="accentDivider"] Given CD Projekt’s confirmation that these aren’t names for upcoming DLC, this leads to a couple of different possibilities. The most likely being that these aren’t the final names for Cyberpunk 2077’s upcoming add-on content. The generic names like “Ripperdocs Expansion” and “Body Shops Expansion” seem to indicate that whatever CD Projekt Red has in store for Cyberpunk 2077’s upcoming DLC aren’t finalized yet.

Utawarerumono ZAN 2 Devs Express Appreciation for PS5; Screenshots Aplenty Revealed on Famitsu

Today’s issue of Weekly Famitsu included a spread on the upcoming action-JRPG Utawarerumono ZAN 2.

Interestingly, the article includes a Q&A with developer Aquaplus, which talks about working with the PS5.

We hear that development for the platform has started just after it was released, so there are still a things the studio has to figure out.

That being said, work on it is going relatively smoothly and it’s a very powerful system, so they’d like to keep developing for PS5 in the future.

The main differences between the PS5 version of the game and the PS4 version are 4K resolution and faster loading times.

In the meanwhile, the article also included plenty of screenshots of the game, alongside more beautiful artwork.

You can check all the images out in the gallery below, proving a good look at the character and at the gameplay.

We’re likely to get a trailer soon, but we’ll have to wait and see.

CD Projekt Red is Reconsidering Cyberpunk 2077 Multiplayer

Cyberpunk 2077's launch was woefully negative. From falsifying demos to game-breaking glitches, all of it came to a climax after reports of crunch and lack of direction followed the game into launch day. CD Projekt Red has implemented several major patches to fix the game, fixes that were required due to ongoing investigations and the game itself being pulled from the PlayStation Store, but it looks like some restructuring is also being considered. According to a recent investors call, CDPR is considering pulling Cyberpunk 2077 multiplayer from its game goals.

In a recent investors call, seen in the video below, CDPR president Adam Kicinski made a passing comment regarding the multiplayer component that was expected to arrive in 2022. According to Kicinski, the team is currently reconsidering whether or not multiplayer should be a focus or even a thing at all. Tha being said, he did add that online features for Cyberpunk are still important, saying, "We are focusing on bringing online into all of our franchises one day." With The Witcher reportedly getting a new take on the horizon, it will be interesting to see how that online component impacts a famously single-player adventure like the fantasy franchise.
