Spider-Man's Final Boss Battle Was Improved by Desire to Avoid Crunch, Insomniac CEO Says

2 years 7 months ago

Insomniac Games' spectacular 2018 game Spider-Man was originally meant to end with the hero and Doctor Octopus fighting all across New York City.

Insomniac CEO Ted Price revealed the original boss fight plans at last week's Develop: Brighton conference per GamesIndustry.biz. But the scope of the finale the studio envisioned couldn't be realized without resorting to crunch, which would clash with the company's goals of increasing employee wellbeing and reducing burnout.

"The temptation is to just brute force it, put our heads down and run through the brick wall," Price said. "But the team took a step back and thought about what was important to the players, and that was the breakdown of the relationship between Peter and his former mentor, Doctor Octavius."

The fight was ultimately a one vs. one battle between Spider-Man and Doc Ock atop a Manhattan building. The team scaled back its ambitions and Price said the decision didn't just help the developers but improved the game itself.

"They rethought the fight and realized they didn't need to destroy half of New York to pay off the relationship," Price said. "In fact, it would have worked against what we were going for. As a result, the final battle is much more up close and personal, and has a far bigger emotional impact than planned — and it fit within the time we had."

Scenic Survival Game Among Trees Exits Early Access November 10

2 years 7 months ago

After spending years in Early Access, the beautiful survival game Among Trees is ready for prime time. Developer FJRD Interactive announced today that the game will officially launch on November 10 for PC.

Among Trees was first revealed during The Game Awards in 2018 and launched in Early Access in June 2020. Set in a scenic, living forest, your task is to gather materials and food to survive. You’ll chop down trees to build a cabin, which you can upgrade by adding new rooms to unlock cooking, crafting, sewing, and gardening. Speaking of that last mechanic, you can construct an entire greenhouse to grow food to consume raw or use as ingredients for recipes. You can also build a hydration system and even a brewery.

The gorgeous world includes forests and caves. As peaceful as it looks, it’s not without its dangers. Predators such as bears roam its landscape, which you’ll need to avoid to prevent a The Revenant situation. If that’s too much excitement for your blood, a peaceful Zen mode allows you to enjoy Among Trees’ laid-back vibe without killer animals breathing down your neck. On the friendlier side, you can adopt and train a fox companion to help you locate valuable resources.

Galaxy Trucker Board Game Review

2 years 7 months ago

Back in 2007, when the original Galaxy Trucker came out, real-time tabletop games were still a novelty. As a result, the novel ship-building system it used where everyone grabbed tiles from the same pile and raced to finish first, made it a big hit.

As time went on, however, the concept proved to have big staying power. While other games explored the real-time design space, Galaxy Trucker carried on selling in droves and received several expansion sets. Now it’s back in stores with a new, tweaked formula to try and appeal to a whole new generation of gamers.

What’s in the Box

While the cartoon art style might not be to everyone’s tastes, there’s no denying it’s a fresh look that suits the game. The bulk of this weighty box is taken up by card punchboards from which you pop the array of ship-building tiles and other tokens. Joining them are a sand timer, some wooden dice and a deck of cards.

But it’s the plastic components that are the star of this show. Some fun little plastic astronaut and alien figures are here, along with lots of marbled plastic cubes to represent cargo. But best of all are the batteries, little tubes of neon plastic that look like they ought to be sour candy. Don’t eat them.

Danny Trejo Was Added to Far Cry 6 Too Early

2 years 7 months ago

Ubisoft has said that it accidentally added a mission featuring Hollywood actor Danny Trejo into Far Cry 6 early and that it has subsequently begun removing it from the game.

In a statement released on Twitter, Ubisoft explained that the mission "Dani & Danny vs Everybody", which included the Spy Kids and Sons of Anarchy actor, had been released into the game by mistake. "The Dani & Danny vs Everybody mission is a work-in-progress and was accidentally released early," read the statement. "We're working to remove it and look forward to when players can check out the final version."

Since raising the mistake with its fanbase, Ubisoft has begun rolling out an update to Far Cry 6 that will see the mission removed from the game. While the studio has said that it will add the mission back into the game at a later date when it has been completed, some of the community were keen to point out that they'd already finished it.

Speedrunner Beats Ocarina of Time in Under 4 Minutes... Inside Smash Bros. Brawl

2 years 7 months ago

A speedrunner has managed to beat The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time in under four minutes. Thing is, they managed the impressive feat without even using the full release of the game.

As spotted by Polygon, a speedrunner going by the username Savestate uploaded a video to YouTube showcasing their run of the N64 classic. Using a demo version of the game loaded from inside Super Smash Bros. Brawl for the Nintendo Wii, Savestate managed to complete the game in an immensely impressive 3 minutes and 41 seconds.

Within the speedrunning community, games have a number of categories that users can attempt speedruns in. Savestate's attempt at the game is classed as an "Any%" run, which essentially means that a player is able to use various bugs, glitches, and exploits to finish the game as quickly as possible. The speedrunner's time is almost half that of the full version of Ocarina of Time's world record, which currently stands at 6 minutes and 49 seconds - although there are significant differences between the full version and the demo included in Smash Bros. Brawl.

Xbox And Adidas Unveil Xbox 360 Sneakers You Can Actually Buy

2 years 7 months ago

In early October, Xbox and Adidas partnered up to create a cool sneaker commemorating the 20th anniversary of the console. The downside: the shoe wasn’t for sale and could only be won in a contest. Fortunately for gamers and sneakerheads, the two companies are at it again, creating another console-inspired sneaker that you can purchase the old-fashioned way.

Dubbed the Xbox 360 Forum Mid, the shoe draws aesthetic inspiration from, you guessed it, the Xbox 360. Like the original version of the console, the sneaker sports a predominantly white look with silver and lime-green accents. Eagle-eyed fans will notice the strap resembles the 360’s disc tray. The heel has elements referencing the removable hard drive and memory unit slots. These easter eggs are largely subtle; the Xbox button on the sides of the shoe is the only dead giveaway you’re wearing a console on your feet. The sneaker also comes with four extra laces in red, yellow, green, and blue. I’m sure you can guess the significance of those colors.

Battlefield Portal Explainer Reveals an Absurd Amount of Customisation

2 years 7 months ago

EA and DICE have offered an in-depth look at how Battlefield Portal, the create-your-own-Battlefield-experience tool that will be available in Battlefield 2042, works. The details reveal just how flexible the system is, from allowing faithful recreations of fan favourites such as Bad Company 2 and Battlefield 3, to Frankenstein-like mashups that bring in weapons, rules, and maps from multiple different legacy games.

Battlefield Portal will use a web browser interface, allowing for easy set up of custom modes. The Portal can be accessed even if you don’t own Battlefield 2042, meaning you can still create games and share them with friends that do own the game.

Creating an ‘Experience’ in Battlefield Portal requires completing a variety of steps, starting with choosing a game mode. Portal offers the classic roster of Battlefield modes; Conquest, Conquest Large, Rush, Free-For-All, and Team Deathmatch. These can be played on a variety of classic maps, and you’re not limited to the ‘right’ number of players for each one; for example, Noshahr Canals: Container Area can be played with 128 players (on PC and new-gen consoles), despite being designed for far fewer combatants.

Portal features 13 small maps and 13 medium maps, plus 7 large maps that can only be played on PC and new-gen consoles. Among them are fan favourites including Arica Harbor, Caspian Border, and Battle of the Bulge. The full list can be seen below.
