Marvel's Avengers Was a 'Disappointing Outcome' According To Square Enix President

2 years 7 months ago

Marvel's Avengers hasn't had the warmest reputation since it launched last year, but now we've got some words from Square Enix's president about its own internal reception.

In Square Enix's annual report for 2021, president Yosuke Matsuda says that Marvel's Avengers was an ambitious GaaS (Games as a Service) release. However, Avengers was not as successful as the company would have liked.

"We overcame a variety of unexpected difficulties in the final phase of the game’s development, including needing to transition to work-from-home due to the pandemic. We were able to surmount these challenges and release the game, but it has unfortunately not proven as successful as we would have liked," Matsuda says.
Matsuda said Square Enix would learn from its experience with Avengers and work to produce games that "mesh with the unique attributes and tastes of our studios and development teams."

"Nonetheless, taking on the GaaS model highlighted issues that we are likely to face in future game development efforts such as the need to select game designs that mesh with the unique attributes and tastes of our studios and development teams," said Matsuda. "While the new challenge that we tackled with this title produced a disappointing outcome, we are certain that the GaaS approach will grow in importance as gaming becomes more service oriented."

Marvel's Avengers Revealed To Be A Disappointment To Square Enix In Annual Report

2 years 7 months ago

Marvel's Avengers

Square Enix has released its annual report for its 2021 fiscal year, which reflected on the games released during the initial months of the COVID pandemic. Marvel's Avengers is revealed in the report to be considered "not proven successful," though lessons were learned from the project.

Taking on a Games as a Service (or GaaS) model, Marvel's Avengers was described as an "ambitious title" for Square Enix. The complications that come with planning for the long tail of a service-focused title with the shift to developers working from home compounded the challenges. "We were able to surmount these challenges and release the game, but it has unfortunately not proven as successful as we would have liked," says Square Enix President Yosuke Matsuda in the report.

Though, there is a silver lining according to Matsuda, and takes the project as a learning opportunity. He says, "Nonetheless, taking on the GaaS model highlighted issues that we are likely to face in future game development efforts such as the need to select game designs that mesh with the unique attributes and tastes of our studios and development teams." As a result of finding out certain lessons of GaaS the hard way, Matsuda says, "While the new challenge that we tackled with this title produced a disappointing outcome, we are certain that the GaaS approach will grow in importance as gaming becomes more service-oriented."

Take-Two Canceled an Unannounced Game and It Cost Them $53 Million

2 years 7 months ago

Update: According to a Bloomberg report, the unannounced game in question was being developed by Mafia 3 studio Hangar 13 and was code-named Volt.

The report goes on to say that the game had been in development since 2017, and had troubles with reboots, technological hiccups, and COVID-19. The studio's employees will meet to discuss next steps on Thursday.

Update 4:03pm PT: A Kotaku report has provided a few more details about the canceled title, saying it was a third-person action title similar to Destiny, and was canceled because Take-Two determined the costs of development were too high compared to the game's commercial viability.

“We are confident that there are many opportunities for H13 employees to work on other games in development, both at H13 and across the label," wrote studio head Haden Blackman in an email to staff today. “2K has also assured me that the company believes H13 can deliver a critical and commercial success, and we will begin developing future projects soon.”

Approximately 200 people are impacted by the game's cancellation, Kotaku reports.

Original story:

Games get canceled all the time, and while we occasionally hear about them via official announcements or reporting, more often they are canceled before they ever reach the news. We got a rare glimpse into the process during Take-Two's earnings today, which revealed that an unannounced game cancellation cost the company $53 million.

GTA Parent Company Has 62 Games Coming By March 2024

2 years 7 months ago

As part of Take-Two's earnings report, the company revealed that it has a whopping 62 games planned for release by the end of FY 2024, which is March 2024.

These games were listed off in a slide for Take-Two's FY22-24 pipeline. It includes 23 "Immersive Core" titles, six "Independent" games from its Private Division label, 20 mobile games, 4 "Mid Core" games, and nine "New Iterations of Previously Released Titles." You can see Take-Two's definitions of these five categories listed below.

The slide contains an important caveat that explains that this is only a "snapshot" of Take-Two's existing development pipeline. Not all will necessarily be seen through to release. "It is likely that some of these titles will not be developed through completion, or some, may be delayed, and we may also add new titles to our slate," Take-Two said.

As an example of Take-Two not seeing every game through to completion, the company just announced it canceled an unannounced game with associated costs of $53 million.

Take-Two has a lot of new games on the way

To help with Take-Two's ambitious plans, the company has been increasing its headcount in recent years. For the latest year, Take-Two had a development studio staff of 5,046, a number that has been been steadily growing in recent years.

Take-Two Is Preparing for a Major Surge in Big Game Releases

2 years 7 months ago

Take-Two, the parent company behind Rockstar, 2K, and Private Division, appears to be cooking up something big.

For the last year and change, they've been telling shareholders to expect a significant, hefty release slate down the pipeline, promising last fiscal year a total of 93 games in the coming five years, and more recently outlining its plans for a slate of "immersive core releases" over the next three years.

During today's earnings call, Take-Two continued to lay out expectations in a similar manner. Between April of 2022 and March of 2024, it's preparing over 60 new releases: 23 "immersive core" titles, similar to its 2K sports games, GTA, and Red Dead Redemption; six games from its independent game publishing label, Private Division; 20 mobile games, four "mid-core" games that are either arcade titles like WWE Battlegrounds or just generally smaller in scope than, say, GTA; and nine games that are either ports or remasters.

That's a significant uptick from what Take-Two has produced in the past, specifically in the immersive core department. In recent years, Take-Two has largely produced a few big games per year, mostly annual 2K releases and then, sporadically, a GTA or Red Dead. On average, to get to 23 in that time frame, it would need to produce seven to eight big blockbuster games each year of that period. That's a lot of GTAs.

Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Ending Explained

2 years 7 months ago

Square-Enix's Guardians of the Galaxy game puts players into Star Lord’s jet-boots to boss around everyone’s space-faring A-holes. As we covered in our review, it's a winning Marvel formula. But this new game exists outside of the MCU and the comic book versions we know and love, and these Guardians aren’t afraid to carve out their own section of the galaxy.

So how exactly does the game's climactic ending draw from the Marvel Comics source material, and what does that tell us about the direction of a potential sequel? Let's take a deep dive into the ending, but beware of full spoilers ahead for Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy!

Showtime, A-Holes!

Remember when Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 teased the debut of Adam Warlock? Well, it turns out Square-Enix beat Marvel Studios to the punch by making this supposed cosmic messiah the final villain of their game.

As the game reveals, Adam Warlock has a serious dark side known as Magus. Though Warlock attempted to seal Magus inside the Soul Stone (yes, the same Soul Stone Thanos was after in Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame), the fanatical Church of Universal Truth manages to bring Magus back. They harness the power of Faith Energy, brainwashing thousands of innocent people into giving Magus the energy he needs to assume physical form. Even Nikki Gold, Star-Lord’s supposed daughter, is part of this plot to usher in a cosmic apocalypse.

Marvel's Midnight Suns Delayed To Second Half Of 2022

2 years 7 months ago

Firaxis has announced that its superhero strategy game, Marvel’s Midnight Suns, won’t make its March release window. The game requires some more polish, so it will instead launch during the back half of 2022. A more exact date was not provided.

The studio tweeted a statement by creative director Jake Solomon explaining the delay. Simply put, the game needs more time in the oven to come together, and four months from now won’t be enough. “These extra months will be used to add more story, cinematics, and overall polish and will be essential in helping us make our vision a reality,” reads Solomon’s statement. You can read the full announcement in the tweet below.

The Launch Date of EA Sports PGA Tour Has Been Delayed

2 years 7 months ago

The official Twitter account for EA Sports PGA Tour announced today that the game has been delayed, promising an update will follow in the coming months.

"Hey golf fans, we wanted to let you know that we are shifting the launch date of EA Sports PGA Tour," the Tweet reads. "We're excited to bring championship golf to you and will be providing more information on our launch plans in the coming months."

EA first announced the title in March and it was slated for release in spring 2022. Described as a "next-gen" golf game, the title would allow players to compete in the Masters, the PGA Championship, the U.S. Open Championship, and the Open Championship. It will be the first title released as part of a new deal between EA and the PGA Tour and the first new game using that license since 2015's Rory McIlroy PGA Tour.

While the game will allow players to challenge many professional golfers, they won't be able to play Tiger Woods since he has an exclusive deal with 2K that placed him in PGA Tour 2K21, which released in August. His contract with EA ended in 2013, which also resulted in the end of the Tiger Woods’ PGA Tour series.

Battlefield 2042 Beta Reached 7.7 Million People

2 years 7 months ago

As part of EA's earnings release on Wednesday, the company announced more details around Battlefield 2042, and specifically how many people took part in the open beta.

According to EA, the Battlefield 2042 open beta had 7.7 million players. That's a huge number, but it's well below the franchise's record for an open beta. Battlefield 1's beta, for example, had more than 13 million players, becoming the biggest beta in EA's history. The Battlefield 3 beta had 8.1 million players and the Battlefield Hardline beta had 7 million players.

None of these are perfect or complete comparisons, however, as each game's beta period ran for different periods of time and were impacted by other factors as well.

Battlefield 2042 launches on November 19, but Game Pass and EA Play subscribers can start playing a 10-hour trial on November 12; that's also when the game's Gold and Ultimate Editions unlock. Unlike past games in the series, Battlefield 2042 has no single-player campaign.

In other news, DICE just recently showed off Battlefield 2042's Portal mode and revealed more about what you can expect from the intriguing-looking mash-up offering.

Oscar-Nominated Dunkirk Cinematographer Worked On Call Of Duty: Vanguard

2 years 7 months ago

Ahead of Call of Duty: Vanguard's release on November 5, Activision and Sledgehammer Games have released a new video that reveals Oscar-nominated cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema worked on the game. Van Hoytema is known for working with Christopher Nolan, and he was the cinematographer on Nolan's Interstellar, Dunkirk, and Tenet, and he also worked on the James Bond movie Spectre. He earned an Academy Award nomination for Dunkirk, and will re-team with Nolan for the movie Oppenheimer, which has been in the news lately.

For Vanguard, van Hoytema helped bring a new level of cinematic artistry to the WWII shooter. Specifically, van Hoyteman said he provided input in the area of helping the developers turn some dials down in an effort to make the atomosphere feel more genuine.

"We had a lot of discussions about how can we make things feel more real, and how can we make things feel as if they are a part of our real world," he said. "Sometimes you can create a beautiful sunset--just because you can--but maybe that sunset you should just tone down; make it grayer, make it a little more depressing, make it a little less flashy."

Genshin Impact Artifacts: What They Are, How They Work, And Where To Get Them

2 years 7 months ago

How you build your character in Genshin Impact is incredibly important for not only beating higher-level enemies and domains but also for team synergy. Some characters can be built for damage or defense, with plenty of options for your playstyle. The most important part of building characters in Genshin Impact is artifacts, which grant high boosts to different stats depending on the artifact. Here is everything you need to know about artifacts.

What are artifacts?

The five artifacts equipped to a Genshin Impact character

Artifacts are equipable items that give individual characters an increase to one specific attribute and up to four bonus attributes. These can include an increase in health, defense, attack, or other attributes, either in a base number increase or a percentage increase. Similar to weapons, artifacts are separated by rarity, going from one star to five -stars. Artifacts can also be leveled up, which will increase the artifact's main stat and either add an additional secondary stat or increase one of the current secondary stats.

All artifacts are also part of specific sets that offer bonus stats if you equip either two or four artifacts in the same set. There are five artifact types: Flower of Life, Plume of Death, Sands of Eon, Goblet of Eonothem, and Circlet of Logos. The Flower of Life artifacts always have HP as their main stat and the Plume of Death always have ATK. The rest of the artifacts can drop with different main attributes.

Marvel's Midnight Suns Delayed to the Second Half of 2022

2 years 7 months ago

As a part of its second-quarter earnings announcement today, Take-Two Interactive announced that Firaxis' upcoming Marvel strategy game, Marvel's Midnight Suns, is being delayed into the second half of next year.

This isn't a massive bump as the Midnight Suns was previously planned for March 2022. Now, it's looking at somewhere between July and December of that year. In a press release, the company implied that the delay was connected at least in part to increases in the difficulty of making games as technology has improved.

As it becomes possible to make bigger and more technologically interesting games, those games are also tougher and take longer to make.

"While we don’t take delays lightly, we know that our proven success has been rooted firmly in our 'player-first' approach and unwavering commitment to delivering the highest quality entertainment experiences," reads the press release. "We believe it is far better to provide the extra time needed for a product – especially a new IP – to reach its full potential and drive long-term success as a permanent franchise in our industry-leading portfolio."

Firaxis' Twitter account provided a similar statement moments prior:

Marvel's Midnight Suns Delayed

2 years 7 months ago

Marvel's Midnight Suns, a new strategy game from XCOM studio Firaxis, has been delayed. The game is now scheduled for release in the second half of 2022.

In a statement, the studio said it needs more time to make Marvel's Midnight Suns the "best game possible." The extra development time will allow the studio to add more story, cinematics, and overall polish to the game, the team said.

While Marvel's Midnight Suns does feature a card-based battle system, Firaxis says the only microtransactions the game will have are cosmetic and that no, you won't be able to date Marvel heroes.

Marvel's Midnight Suns will launch on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC via both Steam and Epic Games Store.

Many games have been delayed this year, due in part to the pandemic and other factors. For more, check out GameSpot's roundup of all the delayed games.

Nintendo Will Make 20% Fewer Switch Consoles Than Expected Through March

2 years 7 months ago

If you thought buying a Nintendo Switch was tough over this past year, that challenge is not going to let up anytime soon.

That’s because Nintendo will be making 20% fewer Switch consoles than expected through March, according to a new report from Nikkei Asia. The 20% reduction translates to roughly 6 million fewer Switch consoles, as Nintendo originally planned to manufacture and ship 30 million Switch units by March. Nikkei Asia reports that the planned number has been reduced to 24 million.

As you might expect, the reason for this reduction in production is chips, or rather, the ongoing shortage of chips. The same chip shortage that has made buying video cards, new vehicles, PlayStation 5s, and Xbox Series X/S consoles is the same shortage affecting Nintendo.

“We are assessing their [component shortages] impact on our production,” a Nintendo spokesperson told Nikkei Asia.
