Microsoft is reportedly considering adding ads to free-to-play games

Microsoft is reportedly considering adding advertisements to its free-to-play games.

That's according to Business Insider, which reports that Xbox is looking to offer advertisment revenue to "developers who make free-to-play" games.

"One of the sources speculated Microsoft isn’t currently interested in collecting a cut of ad revenue because it wants to provide more money-making opportunities to developers who make free-to-play games," the publication said, as transcribed by our sister site, VGC.

Oculus climbing movie The Soloist VR is utterly breathtaking

There’s an old adage in mountaineering that you’re in the most danger when you start to feel safe. I’ve heard stories about climbers, wildly accomplished and in their physical prime, who died falling off relatively easy routes. A good friend of mine ‘decked’ on something comfortably within his grade early on in his climbing career. When I asked him what went wrong, he told me bluntly: ‘I didn’t respect the route.’

That story weighed a lot on my mind when I was watching The Soloist VR, a two-part series following the ups and downs of Alex Honnold, who carved himself into history in May 2017 with his solo ascent of El Capitan. What makes Alex Honnold interesting is the very same quality that keeps him alive: he has a deep, profound respect for the route. For every route. He’s not a Point Break style adrenaline junkie whooping off to his doom, nor does he seem super interested in glory. Honnold has formed a pact with the natural world. In return for humility and preparation, the mountains give him a sense of pure, freewheeling experience that most people could only experience – well, in a video game.

The Soloist VR is not a game but an immersive film, essentially a mini-documentary brought to us by the good folks at Meta and brought to me personally by my mate who agreed to lend me her Quest for an afternoon. As my first time in a VR headset it was compellingly strange, but I adjusted pretty fast. They’ve basically captured the experience of perching on a steep ledge while a man five feet away from you does the most insane thing you’ve ever seen in your whole life.

Microsoft Flight Simulator Lear Fan Gets New Screenshots; Sukhoi Su-31, Ajaccio, & Marrakech Airports Released

Today third-party developers provided new assets and multiple releases of add-ons for Microsoft Flight Simulator.

We start with Lionheart Creations, which posted new images and a brief development update on the unique turboprop designed by Bill Lear LearAvia Lear Fan 2100.

“Work continues on the LearFan. Different color packages with interior themes being put together. The flight model work being tuned and dialed in. Her mighty Prat and Whitney PT-127N that can bring her to 390 knots tuned. A sky door that unfolds so that a lady in a nice dress can board the LF-2200 easily. A lot of details… Goodness. Ron Gilbert Sheds More Light On Return To Monkey Island In New Interview

Ron Gilbert, the mind behind Monkey Island, confirmed another installment in the classic franchise earlier this month. The sixth installment, Return to Monkey Island, will feature the return of Gilbert along with Dave Grossman, who collaborated with Secret of Monkey Island and LeChuck's Revenge.

In an interview with Adventuregamers.com, Gilbert and Grossman shared a little more about Return to Monkey Island. Despite Gilbert's distaste for April Fools, here's what he had to say about announcing that he might be working on a new Monkey Island game on April 1 before formally announcing it a few days later.

"It was maybe about the time right after I wrote that If I Made Another Monkey Island thing [in 2013], and I just thought, you know—it was a weird fantasy, I was like oh, I'd buy the rights back, and I'd announce it on April 1, and it'd be great," Gilbert said.

Gilbert also addressed his famous reluctance to make a new Monkey Island game unless he owned the IP.

"I think the more important thing, rather than owning it, was that I really wanted to have creative freedom. I didn't want to be making a game and having somebody tell me what I should make. It's not a work-for-hire gig. So that was probably more important than actually owning it, was being able to make the game we wanted to make.”

Elden Ring Story Guide - The Frenzied Flame And The Game's Bleakest Ending, Explained

The world of Elden Ring is full of subplots and sidequests, usually given to you by completely missable NPCs who travel around the Lands Between, stopping at various landmarks along the way. Some of them are the keys to new weapons, armor, or spells, while others will unravel whole layers of lore and in-game mythology that will lead you to alternate endings and, maybe, change your understanding of your mission as a would-be Elden Lord altogether.

This is certainly the case with the Frenzied Flame, one of Elden Ring's most dense (and most easily missed) side stories that will walk you down an entirely new path on your quest to the Erdtree--which will even make for some new enemies and some ominous foreshadowing of the future, should you choose to see this quest through.

So what, exactly, is the Frenzied Flame and what does it have to do with Elden Ring's story? The answer is a little complicated, so strap in--and brace for a lot (and we do mean a lot) of major game spoilers along the way.

The World, As It Is

One of the key components of Elden Ring's internal mythology is the idea of The Greater Will, which is what's known as an "Outer God," or an eldritch force that is exerting its influence on the Lands Between via conduits--regular gods, like Marika. There's a lot of finer points and ins-and-outs to being a god, outer or otherwise, in Elden Ring, but for now, its best to understand the Outer Gods in this story as puppet masters trying to pull the strings of the Lands Between while also existing firmly outside of the normal concept of reality.

Halo Series Episode 4 Review – One Step Forward, Two Steps Back

Last week on the Halo series, we saw Master Chief and Kwan headed off to their respective homes to seek some sort of resolution to both their problems. But were our heroes victorious in their respective paths? Join us on The Game Informer Show as we review "Homecoming," the fourth episode in the Paramount Plus show, and let you know if it continues to build on the success of the previous episode.

Your regular hosts are back for another round of hilarity and analysis that you've come to expect from GI's review of the Halo series. Alex Stadnik, Andrew Reiner, and Brian Shea are breaking down this week's episode and have a lot to say about another step back for a series that includes some of the most iconic characters in video games.

We start the episode with the promise of answers to what's going on with John's memories and the artifact that somehow connects to what we can presume is one of the Halo rings. Those answers come at the end of the episode, but "Homecoming" spends far too much time drawing out those scenes, continuing the series' trend of poor pacing. On top of that, we finally find ourselves on Madrigal with Soren and Kwan, which continues to feel like a distraction from the main story we care about.

Elden Ring Story Guide: Here's What's Happening In The Lands Between

The story of Elden Ring is a broad, confusing one--like the Elden Ring itself, it's fractured, made up of tiny pieces as its different characters serve a variety of masters and enact their own plans. Even as you play it, you might find yourself lost as you interact with other Tarnished and hunt down demigods in an attempt to become Elden Lord. Heck, it's not even especially clear most of the time what terms like "Elden Lord" and "Elden Ring" even mean.

We've been poring through Elden Ring's lore for weeks now, piecing together its vast and complicated backstory and the motivations of its many characters to get a sense of what's happening in the game. The story of your Tarnished character is to fight through the world and try to gather Great Runes to become Elden Lord--but that simplified explanation belies the fact that you're taking part in the war between various political factions and a bunch of nameless gods, all of whom are vying to control the Lands Between. The fate of reality itself in this place hangs in the balance, and if you're successful in your quest, you can choose how to reshape the world.

There's a lot of granularity to the story of Elden Ring, but these are the broad strokes of what's happening: What happened before your arrival, why you've come to the Lands Between, what you're trying to accomplish, and who's trying to stop you.

Overwatch 2's Sojourn "Moves The Storyline Forward," Says Blizzard

Overwatch 2's first new hero, Sojourn, finally has a trailer detailing her ability kit, which showcases her aggressive and agile playstyle. We've also seen a bit more of her backstory via Sojourn's origin trailer, which hints at how she connects to the overall narrative. And according to Blizzard, the introduction of Sojourn moves Overwatch's story forward.

Overwatch 2 art director Dion Rogers told The Verge, "When we started making this game, we made a pretty detailed history and lore for the world of the game. It helps us create [character] designs. The initial group of Overwatch that Sojourn was a part of, was a history that was before the game started."

Rogers continued: "We created this timeline, and we wanted Sojourn--especially since she's the first Black female character of the game--to not just be a random addition to the game. She had a deep lore connection to the game world. She moves the storyline forward when she's introduced."

Beyond the story, Sojourn's presence will likely be felt in the in-match meta as well. "It was exciting to watch pro players experiment with Sojourn during the alpha and see all the ways her kit can turn the tides of a team fight," Overwatch 2 competitive operations lead Brad Ross told The Verge. "While the meta and team strategies will assuredly be fluid throughout the season, our prediction is that Sojourn's presence in [The Overwatch League] will be felt quickly."

Horizon Forbidden West Director Teases A Third Game

If you've played Horizon Forbidden West, you know that the story didn't exactly wrap up cleanly. Just like with the end of Zero Dawn, Guerrilla Games set the stage for another game--one that could see Earth completely destroyed. The game's director has now basically confirmed that a third game is coming.

Speaking to VG247, Horizon Forbidden West creative director Mathijs de Jong said the narrative threads we see at the end of the game will be examined in a sequel. "...this game ends with another big cliffhanger, where we're setting up some things for the next game once again."

We won't spoil what that cliffhanger is or what happens in the game's final few hours, but suffice it to say that Aloy's mission is far from finished, and it seems to be much more complicated--and daunting--than we expected when we first picked up a bow in Zero Dawn. The tale of a girl caught in tribal conflict evolved into a science-fiction mystery that is really creative, and not just because of all the different robotic dinosaurs you can fight and tame.

Even if the second game's story didn't have a cliffhanger, it would be no big surprise that Guerrilla Games is planning a third game in the series. It's been a massive success for the studio and for Sony, with Zero Dawn passing 20 million sales in February. Though the mindblowing sales of Elden Ring somewhat overshadowed Forbidden West, as it was released just a week after Guerrilla's game, that might not hurt it too much in the long run. After all, nearly the exact same thing happened with Zero Dawn and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild back in 2017.

Some Xbox Games Could Soon Have More Ads

Microsoft is reportedly looking into letting advertisers insert ads into free-to-play Xbox games. This program is reportedly going to launch by the third quarter of this year.

According to Business Insider, these ads could show up as rendered billboards in a racing game. However, it wasn't able to be confirmed whether these advertisements would extend to avatar skins or video ads.

Interestingly, Microsoft reportedly doesn't intend to take a cut of the advertising revenue and is more interested in building out Xbox's advertising network, as it is said to be trying to identify which companies and ad agencies to work with. Instead, the revenue from the ads will be shared between the game developer and the respective ad company.

Microsoft reportedly wants to provide game developers the opportunity to make more money from their free-to-play games. It has been trying to build out Xbox's in-game ad network since between 2018-2019, but plans accelerated in 2020 due to the release of the Xbox Series S|X.

Microsoft reportedly also has some concerns about the potential backlash this initiative from consumers could look like, as console players aren't accustomed to seeing in-game ads, unlike mobile players. For example, EA placed in-game ads for UFC 4 but removed them after fan outcry.

Best Splinter Cell Games, Ranked From Unessential To Masterful

The stealth-espionage genre was made mainstream with 1998's Metal Gear Solid, but Kojima's series faced stiff competition from Ubisoft and the "Tom Clancy's" brand almost immediately. Splinter Cell dialed up the realism and ripped-from-the-headlines stories in place of the outright goofiness of Metal Gear, added a revolutionary lighting system for more stealth opportunities, and gave us one of the most iconic characters of all time: Sam Fisher. Played by Michael Ironside, Fisher's gravelly voice and snarky personality made him an instant icon.

Not all Splinter Cell games have stood the test of time. A few simply feel dated by today's standards, but the very best Splinter Cell games remain absolute stealth classics. These are the Splinter Cell games ranked from worst to best.

Splinter Cell Essentials

Splinter Cell Essentials

Easily the weakest Splinter Cell game (not counting ports) Splinter Cell Essentials is a very weird game and anything but essential. It was billed as a sort of companion game to Double Agent, but released a full six months early after the latter game was delayed. Essentially (sorry) an alternate take on the events of Double Agent, Splinter Cell Essentials features a mix of new missions and flashback missions that are basically lifted from previous games.

We Spoke to 'Let Me Solo Her,' the Elden Ring Community Hero We Need and Deserve

In the grim, unforgiving world of Elden Ring, there are no characters that can truly be considered heroes — not even the protagonist. But one community member has risen to fame in the last week: a naked man wearing nothing but a jar on his head who waits outside the door to the game's hardest boss under the polite request of a name: 'Let me solo her'.

Let Me Solo Her (who asked in an email to go by either his Elden Ring moniker or LMSH for short) is an unassuming, altruistic player who has been dropping his summon sign outside the boss fight door of Malenia, for the last week or more. Malenia, while not a mandatory fight for finishing Elden Ring, is the culmination of multiple sidequests and has become notorious in the community as one of the most difficult battles FromSoftware has ever designed. So naturally, there are plenty of players who feel they want to finish it for completion, but are struggling to do so. Enter LMSH.

Current-Gen Versions Of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Are Not In "Development Hell," Says CD Projekt Red

Following an announcement that current-generation versions of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt have once again been delayed, developer CD Projekt Red further clarified that the game isn't in development hell.

As spotted by PC Gamer, CD Projekt Red senior vice president of business development Michał Nowakowski said, during an April investment call, "I've been looking at the headlines that popped up here and there over the internet, and I've seen one that really drew my attention, which is, 'Witcher 3 next-gen delayed indefinitely,' which sounds like the game is in some sort of development hell. I want to state this is not the fact. There's been a lot of insinuations that we're going to launch, like, June next year or something like that. That's completely not the case."

It actually sounds like there may not be that much work left to do on the current-gen versions. During the call, CD Projekt Red joint CEO Adam Kicinski said that "not many" developers are required to finish the game, estimating that it would only need 15 or so people and some external staff. "Taking over this project will not affect the development of our next game," Kicinski added.

"We have taken the development of the game in-house," Nowakowski said. "The game is going to be finished in-house. We're evaluating our time--that requires a bit of investigation. That's all we're saying. Nobody's saying the game is delayed [with] some monumental time gap ahead of us. That's as much as I can say about Witcher next-gen, but I really want to emphasize that fact."

Genshin Impact - The Chasm World Quest Millennial Mountains

One of Genshin Impact's longer World Quests, but not as long as Chasm Delvers, is the Millennial Mountains quest chain. You'll traverse all over The Chasm's overworld terrain, and even embark on a sub-quest related to the Treasure Hunters. Please see the end of the article for a full list of rewards available at the end of the quest chain. That said, here's how to find all locations of the required ceremonial offerings required to complete the Millennial Mountains quest.

How To Unlock

Talk to Wang who is standing in front of a ceremonial altar. He will then tell you to find six artifacts: the Flower of Farsight, the Skyfeather, the Sundial of Ages, the Cup of Commons, the Helm of Warding, and the Warrior's Spear. He will give you the general location of each through an image. You'll need to match the images up with locations on The Chasm's map and then go to each area in order to recover the corresponding artifacts.
