Grounded Is Exiting Early Access With 1.0 Release After Two Years

1 year 11 months ago

After two years of development alongside the community, and over 10 million players on Xbox Game Pass, Obsidian’s backyard survival game Grounded is finally getting a 1.0 release this September.

1.0 brings Grounded out of early access, as well as adds a number of major updates, including the introduction of a new part of the backyard (the upper yard), new armor and weapon recipes, new secrets, and a new boss: the Mantis. By far the most impactful of these updates is the completion of Grounded’s story about a group of kids shrunk to insect-size and forced to survive in a backyard full of much larger insects and other hazards.

IGN spoke with game director Adam Brennecke, who’s been with Obsidian for 18 years now – almost since the studio’s inception. Having worked on a number of projects from Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2 as a programmer all the way to executive producer on Pillars of Eternity, by the time Deadfire was wrapping, he’d naturally had a lot of experience with RPGs. But he and a handful of others at Obsidian wanted to try something different: a survival game that still embraced the studio’s RPG storytelling background.

A lot has changed for that small internal team since they started brainstorming the game that would become Grounded. They’ve grown from 12 to 20 members, though Brennecke says it’s still the smallest team he’s ever worked on. Their game has launched in early access to a level of success that surprised even Brennecke. And Xbox acquired Obsidian during Grounded’s development, offering Obsidian tools and resources they wouldn’t have otherwise had access to, like a user research group to help them develop accessibility features such as arachnophobia mode.

Obsidian's Xbox-Exclusive Pentiment Is a 16th Century Mystery Styled Like a Medieval Manuscript

1 year 11 months ago

After a number of rumors, the next project from Obsidian's Josh Sawyer has finally been revealed: it is indeed called Pentiment, and it's a narrative crime story of sorts set in 16th century Bavaria and styled like a medieval manuscript.

While we got a look at a visually fascinating trailer at Xbox's showcase today, IGN spoke with Sawyer ahead of the announcement about what exactly Pentiment is. As Sawyer explains it, Pentiment follows a medieval artist named Andreas Maler, an educated journeyman who's near to becoming a master artist. While visiting an abbey to make an illuminated manuscript, a monk who is also Andreas' friend and mentor is accused of a murder he claims he didn't commit. Since no one else steps in to solve the case, Andreas dedicates himself to finding the real killer.

Sawyer tells us that key to Pentiment is that it never explicitly tells you who the murderer really is. Andreas will have to decide who he thinks committed the murder, or at least who he thinks should be punished for it even if it isn't the actual murderer. And those decisions will ripple out through the rest of Pentiment, which covers a span of around 25 years and multiple crimes and murders that Andreas keeps getting caught up in.

Though there are mysteries at its heart, Sawyer is adamant that Pentiment isn't explicitly a detective game, because it doesn't contain typical detective mechanics. He says it's more of a narrative adventure with mystery and murder elements, and as per his past work, lots of player choice.

What Is Obsidian’s Pentiment?

1 year 11 months ago

Josh Sawyer’s just-announced medieval narrative mystery, Pentiment, has been in development for about four years now. But if you ask Sawyer, it really started way, way back in 1992.

At the time, Sawyer was enjoying an RPG called Darklands, developed by Microprose Labs for MS-DOS. It was set in the Holy Roman Empire in the 15th century, but with a supernatural bent that left room for demons and Templar conspiracies. Sawyer fell in love with its approach to historical fiction, and as he went on to get a degree in history and subsequently work in games, the idea of a historical fiction game stuck with him.

Sawyer first pitched the seed of what would become Pentiment to now-Obsidian CEO Feargus Urquhart back when they were still working at Black Isle together. There, Sawyer was a designer working on projects like Icewind Dale 2 and the original, cancelled Fallout 3. As Sawyer explains it, Urquhart was “not into” his pitch at the time, and felt people who wouldn’t know history wouldn’t want to play it.

Lightyear Frontier, a farming and exploration game coming from indie studio Frame Break, is set to be released on Xbox consoles in Spring 2023, it was announced Sunday during the Xbox & Bethesda Games showcase.

Minecraft Legends is a new action strategy game spin-off

1 year 11 months ago

Minecraft maker Mojang has revealed a new action strategy spin-off for its sandbox franchise: Minecraft Legends, developed with Blackbird Interactive.

Described as an action strategy game, this 2023 release sees you run about slashing away at Minecraft enemies in a bid to unite Minecraft's overworld, whatever that means.

Still, it looks intriguing and if it's half as fun as Mojang's Minecraft Dungeons, will be worth a try. As you'd expect, it's coming to Xbox Game Pass on day one, and will launch for PC via Windows Store and Steam, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.

Redfall's vampires can't compete with your big tech and magic elevators

1 year 11 months ago

It was on the cards, and tonight at the XBox & Bethesda Showcase we indeed got a look at some vampire slaying in Redfall. Arkane's spooky co-op FPS has been on my most anticipated list for a while, especially because I was hoping the studio would put their signature weird twist on things. Judging by the big guns and big abilities you have at your disposal, they have - and the vampires should be watching their be-caped backs. Never thought I'd see the day when someone made being a vampire hunter look cooler than being a vamp, but we might be getting there.

Scorn, the Very Bloody Horror Game Inspired By H.R. Giger, Has a Release Date

1 year 11 months ago

Scorn, the upcoming "biopunk" survival horror adventure game inspired by H.R. Giger, has a release date. It will release on October 21, and will be available day One on Xbox Game Pass.

The new trailer shows a decrepit world, bloody skin, and an umbilical cord. It looks appropriately gory and horrifying, as befits a game that takes inspiration from Giger, who also provided the imagery for Alien.

The description suggests you will play as a skinless humanoid on a nightmare alien planet, with various biomechanical weapons that can be attached to your body.

One thing is for sure: This game does look a lot like Alien, making its release date, which is quite close to Halloween, pretty much perfect.

The Scorn announcement was part of the Xbox + Bethesda Showcase, which has also included Redfall, a new Silksong trailer, and more. Stay tuned for lots more coverage of the Summer of Gaming continues.

A new look at Plague Tale: Requiem and it's much stabbier than before

1 year 11 months ago

Microsoft showed a new trailer for A Plague Tale: Requiem during the Games Showcase today, giving us another rare look at gameplay in the upcoming sequel, due sometime this year on Xbox Consoles, PC and Game Pass at launch. It's also coming to PS5 but obviously Microsoft glossed over that bit.

The thing that really stuck out to me, a fan of the first game, was stabbing. Amicia, the returning older sister of brother Hugo, and our hero, can now approach enemies from the back and stealth-kill them, reaching over and stabbing them multiple times in the neck - the kind of gruesome move we've seen many times in other stealth combat games. Except A Plague Tale, the first game, wasn't really a stealth combat game - it was more about running away and hiding and being smart. That's what made it stand out.

Amicia also packs a crossbow in the sequel, which she uses, and she can garrotte people with some chord. All she had in the first game was a slingshot, which wasn't entirely capable of one-shot kills. It was more of a utility/distraction tool.

Fallout 76 Expansion Expeditions: The Pitt Hits PC And Consoles This Fall

1 year 11 months ago

Pete Hines took the stage at today's Xbox Showcase to introduce a bevy of Bethesda projects. Among looks at Elder Scrolls Online and a recap on Redfall, which kicked the event off in style, the Bethesda exec revealed a new expansion for Fallout 76. The company's online multiplayer game had a rough start, but Bethesda has continued to work on its title, with several story expansions and updates to the game's world. However, this is the first update we've had for the title in a while, as the last major expansion came last year.

The Pitt's story will take place in post-war Pittsburgh, a location we haven't seen since Fallout 3. Described as "a grim industrial wasteland crippled by conflict," players will be teaming up with the Union, a band of mechanically skilled fighters seeking to rid their home of raiders that have taken over called the Fanatics. This task will be made even harder by the fact that The Pitt's toxic wasteland is warping the mind of its inhabitants.

Fallout 76's Expeditions: The Pitt is coming this September.

New Forza Motorsport announced, coming spring 2023

1 year 11 months ago

As part of Microsoft and Bethesda's showcase this evening, the next Forza Motorsport was finally announced. And, we also now have an idea of when it will be zooming our way - spring 2023. On its release it will be coming to Xbox Series X/S and PC. As well as this, Forza Motorsport will also be available as part of the Xbox Game Pass subscription service on day one.

Along with this announcement, Dan Greenawalt and the game's director Chris Esaki popped in for a chat about their game. It's the most technically advanced racing game ever apparently, so that's exciting. We also got told about its dynamic time of day feature, the weather for each track and the inclusion of raytracing. This was all shown off with a clip from the fictional circuit known as Maple Valley.

The twosome also says there's a 48x improvement in the accuracy of the simulation - but, as Martin has asked, what does that mean, and how does it feel? I guess we won't find out for a while.

Minecraft Legends Is An Action Strategy Game Coming To Xbox And PC Next Year

1 year 11 months ago

Minecraft Legends Revealed Trailer 2023

Microsoft and Mojang have revealed Minecraft Legends, an action strategy game coming to Xbox consoles and PC.

This news comes from today’s Xbox & Bethesda Games Showcase, where Mojang revealed the Legends trailer. The story shows the destruction of a village and the rebirth of a new land thanks to some heroic deeds of friendship, bravery, and more. According to the trailer, the game tells the story of a united overworld, and that overworld is to be united by none other than you, the player.

Check out the reveal trailer for yourself below

As you can see, Legends is quite the departure from the typical Minecraft formula. Breaking away from the survival crafting mold the series has held for over a decade, similar to what Minecraft Dungeons did in 2020, Legends will be the first action strategy game in Mojang’s blocky world. It also features a unique spin on the traditional Minecraft visuals.

It retains the blockiness fans of Minecraft have come to know and love, but with a more distinct, almost comic book-ey style. It looks great, and fortunately, we don’t have to wait too long to play it because it hits Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, and PC sometime next year.

Ark 2 Is Now Arriving in 2023

1 year 11 months ago

We got a new cinematic look at Ark 2 today, which will now be released in 2023.

At today's Xbox-Bethesda summer showcase, we got a fresh cinematic trailer for the game – which if you don't remember, stars Vin Diesel – and a new release window, 2023.

Ark 2 was first announced last year, and was subsequently dated for 2022, but it looks as though that date has slipped slightly. Not only does Vin Diesel star, but he's also a developer – the "President of Creative Convergence" to be exact.

Ark 2 is the sequel to Ark: Survival Evolved, a sci-fi/prehistoric survival game we gave a 7.7/10 review, saying it "has some great moments of battle with prehistoric beasts, but just as many of AI bugs and grind."

Forza Horizon 5 Is Getting Hot Wheels DLC

1 year 11 months ago

Forza Horizon 5 is returning to familiar, plasticky ground with a wild-looking Hot Wheels expansion.

Revealed at today's Xbox-Bethesda showcase, the DLC showed off the game's beautiful Mexican setting with added toy-like tracks, like a loop-the-loop through a volcano and into the sky. The DLC launches on July 19, 2022.

Forza Horizon 3 also got a very popular Hot Wheels expansion, which we awarded a 9/10 review, saying it was "a delightful, daring, and different expansion that reinforces Forza Horizon 3’s reputation as one of the best racing games ever made."

Given that we awarded the core Forza Horizon 5 a full 10/10, we can only hope its own Hot Wheels DLC similarly improves on its predecessor.

Overwatch 2 Goes Free-to-Play, Shows Off New Badass Hero Junker Queen

1 year 11 months ago

We just got to play a little Overwatch 2 earlier this year when the closed PvP beta launched, and it looks like we’re inching ever closer to its release date. Blizzard showed off a new trailer for Overwatch 2 during the Xbox and Microsoft showcase today, and you can check that out down below:

While it’s not exactly the longest trailer ever, there’s quite a bit of info packed in here. First off, Overwatch is going free-to-play, and while we’re still waiting on more details on what exactly will be free, it’s probably safe to assume that Overwatch 2’s PvE content will still be paid. F2P players will likely get to enjoy the core multiplayer modes for free.

In addition to that, Overwatch 2’s early access period will be kicking off on Oct. 4, and Blizzard also capped things off with the reveal of a new hero, Junker Queen. She has big Mad Max vibes, and we’re definitely looking forward to seeing more of her, alongside Sojourn.

Overwatch 2 is set to release in early access on Oct. 4.

Hollow Knight Silksong

Microsoft's Xbox and Bethesda Showcase brought new word of Hollow Knight: Silksong, the sequel to hit side-scrolling action game Hollow Knight. The trailer shown during the event was the first and most substantial look at the game since its reveal in 2019. Since then, information has been sparse, to the point that developer Team Cherry skipped last year's showcase entirely.

Check out the reveal trailer below.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JSfuFlhsxZY

With the showcase focused on titles that will be released by June 2023, would-be players of Hollow Knight: Silksong can expect the game within that window. It'll also be a day-one Xbox Game Pass release, meaning subscribers will see it in their PC and Xbox console libraries when it's ready to play.

Originally intended as DLC content for the original Hollow KnightSilksong grew into its own game. Players will control Hornet, the princess-protector of Hallownest, and a lethal hunter. Hornet uses a needle-like weapon and silken threads in combat. She'll also have a new set of moves and the ability to craft an array of weapons and gadgets to further exploration and unlock combat options. Over 150 new enemies and new zones were also promised.

Hollow Knight: Silksong will arrive on Xbox consoles, PC, and Xbox Game Pass by mid-2023. Nintendo Switch was also listed as a target platform in the initial announcement.

Gruesome Stealthy Takedowns On Display In New A Plague Tale: Requiem Footage

1 year 11 months ago

Amicia and Hugo want to start a new life, but they need to find somewhere safe where this dream can be realized. In a new trailer for Asobo Studio's A Plague Tale: Requiem, we see them traveling south, across treacherous terrain and into thriving villages. These places look like they could be safe havens, but we quickly see guards expanding their search and are everywhere.

The new footage shows stealth maneuvers captured in striking detail. We see Amicia hiding under a table to evade a patrol and being surprisingly aggressive, using weapons to silently take out guards. We also see her use fire to create a blaze that will surely draw out every guard in the area.

Of course, Hugo's curse doesn't remain dormant for long and a flood of rats appears to keep him safe. A Plague Tale: Requiem still doesn't have an official release date, but is still slated to release in 2022 for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Switch, and PC. You'll be able to play it on Xbox Game Pass on day one.

1 year 11 months ago

At the end of the Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase, Hideo Kojima appeared to talk about a new game he's working on with Xbox Game Studios

Near the end of the 2022 Xbox and Bethesda Games Showcase, Hideo Kojima showed up to talk about a new game he’s working on. It will be a collaboration between Kojima Productions and Xbox Game Studios.

Here is Hideo Kojima’s full statement about the new game from the presentation.

Hi, everyone, this is Hideo Kojima. Yes, there is a game I have always wanted to make. It’s a completely new game, one that no one has ever experienced or seen before. I’ve waited very long for the day when I could finally start to create it. With Microsoft’s cutting edge cloud technology, and the change in the industry’s trend, it has now become possible to challenge myself to make this never-before-seen concept. It may take some time, but I’m looking forward to teaming up with Xbox Game Studios and hope to bring you some exciting news in the future! Thank you!

Kojima Productions’ first game was Death Stranding, which first showed up on the PS4 and PC. It later ended up getting a Director’s Cut release for the PS5 and PC. The next new, rumored game from Hideo Kojima is supposedly a game called Overdose.

Overwatch 2: New Tank Hero Junker Queen Announced

1 year 11 months ago

Overwatch 2 will be adding a new Tank character, the Junker Queen, to the line-up.

As announced in today's Xbox and Bethesda showcase, the Junker Queen is the second new hero announced for Overwatch 2 after Sojourn. The character was referred to within the original Overwatch, but never made a formal onscreen appearance inside the game.

In a cinematic trailer, the Junker Queen is shown in a very Thunderdome-esque brawl for the throne of Junkertown. A full look of the character and her kit will be revealed later, but a brief look at the character's gameplay was in the Overwatch 2 release date trailer.

Fans of the series will know the Junker Queen from Junkrat's animated short, where she was briefly seen on a poster in Junkertown. As in the poster, Junker Queen is a tall and imposing figure who wields a large axe, which she's seen swinging to clear away foes (as well as using a rifle). The Australian ruler of Junkertown (itself an Overwatch map) is described as "ruthless", but her full kit and lore remain to be seen – although we know she's connected to previous characters Roadhog and Junkrat.

Overwatch 2 PvP Release Date Announced, Will be Free-to-Play

1 year 11 months ago

Overwatch 2's long-awaited PvP mode will be released into early access on October 4 – and it will be going free-to-play.

As announced during the Xbox and Bethesda Showcase, Blizzard made a special appearance to give an update on Overwatch 2. After years of waiting, the PvP portion of Overwatch 2 will be released this October. But where the first Overwatch was a paid release, Overwatch 2 will be going free-to-play.

This will likely mean Overwatch 2 will undergo some serious business model changes, and likely incorporate some form of Season Pass for monetization. It's also unclear how this will affect the way new heroes can be acquired, which were previously released for free under the first Overwatch.

Blizzard also announced a Founder's Pack, which gives existing Overwatch players an exclusive icon, two Epic skins and other bonuses. Players will need to own the original Overwatch before June 23, 2022 to be eligible for the Pack.
