Starfield is "like Skyrim in space" or a "Han Solo simulator"

2 years 10 months ago

Bethesda's upcoming space RPG Starfield bagged itself a release date last night (November 11th 2022, in case you missed it), but we still don't know a whole about what we'll actually do in it. In a recent interview, executive producer Todd Howard said "it's like Skyrim in space", though I doubt that means exploring draugr-filled asteroids. Slightly more interestingly, Bethesda's managing director Ashely Cheung compares it to Star Wars.

"For me, Starfield is the Han Solo simulator. Get in a ship, explore the galaxy, do fun stuff," he says.

How Elden Ring's Open World Works

2 years 10 months ago

Elden Ring game director Hidetaka Mizayaki revealed some of the elements that are going into making Elden Ring From Software’s most ambitious dark fantasy action RPG to date. The realm that players explore in Elden Ring is known as The Lands Between, and was created in collaboration with George R.R. Martin of A Song of Ice and Fire fame. While Martin’s work may be best known today for the popular Game of Thrones series, he also was instrumental in crafting the history of the world of Elden Ring.

However, ever since we learned that Elden Ring would be a sort of Soulsian open world endeavor, the question remained - how on earth would that work, when the Souls games, Bloodborne, and even Sekiro have such carefully curated level design that funnels the player into carefully placed foes, traps, bosses, and breathtaking sights?

Vampire: The Masquerade - Swansong introduces our Malkavian protagonist

2 years 10 months ago

Somehow I'd missed that Vampire: The Masquerade - Swansong, unlike most of the other VTM games these days, is not interactive fiction. Nope, apparently a 3D walking-around sort of "narrative RPG", made by the studio behind 2018's curious The Council. Huh! I'm interested. A new trailer out E3 introduces us to one of the three protagonists we'll switch between, Leysha - a Malkavian. Her fashion is truly great.

Lego Super Mario's third wave of blind bag add-ons revealed

2 years 10 months ago

Lego has detailed a third set of Super Mario Character Packs to be released in blind bags this summer.

As with previous waves, there are 10 additional enemies and items to collect, and you'll need a bit of luck to obtain the full set with no duplicates. (Or to swap with a friend. Or eBay.)

There's no release date or price yet for Series 3, but we'd expect these to cost the same as the last two waves (£3.49/$4.99/€3.99 each) and arrive alongside the upcoming Super Luigi Starter Course on 1st August.

This Resident Evil Village Mod Shows Ethan Winters' Hands The Love That Capcom Won't

2 years 10 months ago

Sure, the internet was going nuts about the Big Tall Vampire with Lady Dimitrescu, but let's not also forget about poor Ethan Winters' hands. Both in Resident Evil 7 and Village, Capcom just loves putting Ethan's digits through the ringer, but modders are bringing the character (and his hands) the love that devs won't. That's right, there's a Resident Evil Village mod that gives Ethan back his hands. Lord knows he's been through enough...

In Resident Evil Village, Ethan loses his fingers, his hand, and his sanity. Maybe not so much that last part, but the former point is absolutely true. I don't know what Capcom hates about Ethan particularly, but the poor boy has gone through enough. That's where this Resident Evil Village mod comes in.

Click here to watch embedded media

The mod itself is simple (and just for PC, as console mods are still largely limited to just Bethesda titles). It gives back Ethan's chewed-up fingers that he loses pretty early on in the game. Is this a mind-blowing mod? Nah. Did I enjoy writing it because Ethan gets too much hate? Yah.

For those interested, you can download this restorative experience right here through Nexus Mods.

Citizen Sleeper is narrative RPG set on a ruined space station

2 years 10 months ago

Remember that brightly-coloured alien exploration game In Other Waters? Well, the developer is back with another sci-fi offering, although this time it's all taking place on a run-down space station.

Titled Citizen Sleeper, the game was previously teased under the name Project Sidereal, but developer Jump Over The Age revealed the new name and trailer during last night's PC Gaming Show. It's described as "roleplaying in the ruins of interplanetary capitalism," with the player taking the role of a "sleeper" - in other words, a digitised human consciousness. The bad news is that you're also owned by a huge corporation that wants you back, and your body will deteriorate as part of "planned obsolescence" for escapees. This what happens when billionaires start jetting themselves into space, I guess.

"Thrust amongst the unfamiliar and colourful inhabitants of the Eye, you need to build friendships, earn your keep, and navigate the factions of this strange metropolis, if you hope to survive to see the next cycle," the Steam description explains. "Escape the makers of your decaying body, and chart your own path in a richly imagined, deeply relevant sci-fi world which explores ideas of precarity, personhood and freedom."

Battlefield 2042 looks like Battlefield but with big storms

2 years 10 months ago

I've been after a shooter that'll loosen my grip on Call Of Duty: Warzone and I think Battlefield 2042 might be it. Having watched the gameplay trailer at Microsoft and Bethesda's E3 showcase, it's large-scale shooty bang in areas exclusively ravaged by tornadoes and storms. Clear skies and an easy shot? Nah mate, not any longer. Have a tornado.

Everyone please keep making new versions of Left 4 Dead, thank you

2 years 10 months ago

There was a moment over the weekend where Alice0 pointed out that a lot of people are remaking Left 4 Dead - apart from Valve. I have mentioned this before, but playing L4D2 accounted for about 60% of my time at university. I have a tattoo of the safe house symbol on my ribs (it is terrible).

The Left 4 Dead formula is simple on paper - small team of co-op players vs monster horde, getting from point A to point B with potential incidental side objectives on the way - but is tough to nail. You need to get the mix right. And this year's E3 has revealed a lot of people are rolling up their sleeves to have a go. Let's have a look.

Bethesda Describes Starfield As A "Han Solo Simulator"

2 years 10 months ago

Xbox went into its E3 2021 swinging by kicking off its live stream event alongside Bethesda with our first real look at Starfield. The new IP from Bethesda is a fresh start for the company that gave us Fallout and Elder Scrolls, especially when looking at its use of a different engine. While the trailer shown gives us a glimpse at the exploratory scope of this new game, Bethesda had a pretty interesting comparison when describing what Starfield's experience is all about. Any Indiana Jones or Star Wars fans reading this? Yes? Good.

In a recent interview with The Washington PostBethesda's Ashley Cheng mentioned that this is basically one giant Star Wars-like experience. "For me, Starfield is the Han Solo simulator. Get in a ship, explore the galaxy, do fun stuff." Bethesda's Todd Howard chimed in when chatting with The Telegraph with his own comparison, saying that it's "NASA meets Indiana Jones meets the League of Extraordinary Gentlemen."

Nice.

Tinykin looks like Pikmin inside a giant house

2 years 10 months ago

I get a childlike sense of glee from playing games that let me run around as a miniature human in a world that's far too big for them. Add a dash of Pikmin to that, and you've really caught my interest. The newly announced puzzle platformer Tinykin seems to provide exactly that: it's about a very small astronaut exploring a giant house with the help from lots of little one-eyed alien pals.

Bethesda says Starfield will be like a "Han Solo simulator", "NASA meets Indiana Jones"

2 years 10 months ago

By now, you will likely have seen Bethesda's first in-game footage of Starfield, its long-awaited sci-fi role-playing game coming to PC and Xbox Series X/S as a console exclusive on 11th November 2022.

But how will it play? What will you actually do? And will we ever get to finish that half-eaten space sandwich?

Bethesda has given a couple of interviews which mostly avoid answering specifics, but do touch a bit on some of the above.

Official Xbox Mini Fridge Will Be Available For All This Holiday, "Xbox And Chill"

2 years 10 months ago

Friendships? They come and go, but you know what's forever? Memes. Memes last forever. Sound dorky? You're probably right, but the fact is that companies have been incorporating "meme culture" into marketing strategies more and more in recent years, and the effect is hard to deny. The team over at Xbox is a perfect example, handing over social media control to gamers that are passionate about the community and memes? There's no denying that's a universal language. The company of Xbox itself isn't afraid to get a little weird for a new promo. Case and point? The Xbox Series X fridge Microsoft debuted last year. We thought that was the end of that, but no, Team Green is back with another kitchenware item: the Xbox mini-fridge not too long after and now? Now you can buy one yourself.

Crucial's top SSD for gaming is now the cheapest it's ever been

2 years 10 months ago

The Crucial MX500 - Digital Foundry's pick for the best SSD for gaming - is now just £42.

The 500GB model has been reduced to its lowest price so far according to our price tracker - and it will remain that way for the rest of the week.

Why's the MX500 so highly rated, though? Well, it's excellent value for money and will give you a significant boost to loading times when used for OS or game installs. The strong read/write speeds make it superior to the cheaper BX500 series, while other drives from the likes of Samsung and Western Digital offer similar performance but at a higher cost.

Starfield's "explore the galaxy" premise is hard to beat, but it'll be even harder to deliver on

2 years 10 months ago

"Get in a ship, explore the galaxy, do fun stuff": that's Bethesda's Starfield in a nutshell, according to executive producer Todd Howard. The first time I read that neat little triptych in yesterday's Washington Post interview, my brain skated over it. It's one of those broad, sweeping statements that promises something so big you end up disregarding it by default. But then I went back to it, and after forcing my mind's eye to hover over the words like a fat hawk, the words really sank in. The middle three, in particular.

Explore the galaxy. That, right there, is a premise that space games have always tended to fall short on over the years, and I'd forgotten how badly I wanted it fulfilled. Speaking bluntly, science fiction is one of the biggest things in my life. Exploring the galaxy is a big deal to me, and yet, the experience space games have delivered in the past has never quite been the one I've been after. Now, I'm daring to ask myself how I'd feel if this time, it was.

Sony has been working with Deviation Games on its new PlayStation-exclusive IP for over a year already

2 years 10 months ago

Last week, Sony announced it had signed a deal with Deviation Games to make a brand new PlayStation IP - the second such deal Sony has announced in recent months.

Deviation Games was set up in November 2019 by former Treyarch Studios developers Dave Anthony and Jason Blundell, both of whom played a key role in the success of the Call of Duty: Black Ops series.

Blundell, one of the chief creators of Call of Duty's popular zombies mode, left Treyarch after 13 years at the developer.

Fallout 76 visits Fallout 3's The Pitt next year

In 2022, Fallout 76 will let players explore beyond the reaches of Appalachia for the first time. Bethesda are adding Expeditions to their post-apocalyptic MMO, which will allow former vault-dwellers to adventure in other areas of the Fallout universe. The first one might be familiar to folks who played some of Fallout 3's DLC too, because it's sending us back to The Pitt (that is: radiation-ravaged Pittsburgh).

Sci-fi apocalypse adventure Somerville gets a new trailer

2 years 10 months ago

Somerville has been teased with a number of trailers over the past few years, but during yesterday's Xbox-Bethesda showcase we got another look at the game - and now have some idea of what the main characters will look like.

The sci-fi adventure is being made by Jumpship, an independent studio founded by animator Chris Olsen in collaboration with Playdead co-founder and former CEO Dino Patti. (Playdead created Limbo and its spiritual successor Inside, two very unsettling puzzle-platformers.)

As you can see from the trailer, Somerville set in a sci-fi world and focuses on the struggles of a family trying to survive a major disaster. "In the wake of catastrophe you must find the means to make your family whole again," says the official description. "Somerville is a sci-fi adventure grounded in the intimate repercussions of large-scale conflict.

Northgard devs announce open-world tactical RPG Wartales

The studio behind Northgard and Evoland are jaunting into yet another genre, this time an open-world RPG with turn-based tactical combat. Shiro Games last night announced Wartales, a game about leading a band of mercenaries in the aftermath of an apocalyptic plague. It looked like an unfatastical medieval world in the trailer until I saw a colossal crest of black fur rolling through a forest and OOH what is this. See for yourself in the trailer below.
