Final Fantasy VII Remake Has Gone Gold; There Won’t Be Any More Delays

4 years 2 months ago

Today the Japanese website 4Gamer published an interview with Final Fantasy VII Remake director Tetsuya Nomura who talked about the upcoming game.

First of all, Nomura-san mentions that the game has already gone gold.

If you’re unfamiliar with the industry lingo, it means that the development of the data that will be shipped on the disk has been concluded, and the game is ready for its release.

Nomura-san also added that while the delay allowed the team to improve the quality of the final game, there won’t be any more.

Interestingly, we learn more about the story elements that have been added on top of the original game.

For instance, we’ll be able to visit Jessie’s parents house to have a meal there. Nomura-san explains that the individual members of Avalanche aren’t really fleshed out in the original game, but the Remake will be different.

In order to make that part more solid, there is also an event that places Jessie under the spotlight.

This is not part of a subquest. It’s part of the main story, and according to Nomura-san, fans will be satisfied by when they finally leave Midgar.

While the story of the first game includes only Midgar, he feels that once you have played it, we’ll be satisfied, and you’ll definitely want to continue with the next.

6 Boring Tasks We Can’t Wait to Do in Animal Crossing: New Horizons

4 years 2 months ago

Pulling Weeds

Menial tasks we can’t wait to do in Animal Crossing New Horizons

Pulling weeds isn’t fun in real-life. Who wants to sit there and pull tiny green strands out the ground. They’re normally in really annoying places, too. Weeds are the nuisance of the world, and gardeners are the saints doing the lord’s work clearing them away.

So why oh why is pulling weeds so damn satisfying in Animal Crossing? We have no idea. Perhaps it’s the feeling of having a spotless town after clearing the 10 bajillion that spawn each day.

There’s always that little manhunt for the last one, too. You know there’s one hiding precariously behind a tree, and you’re the weed-seeking missile about to rip it out of its comfy home.

Final Fantasy VII Remake Lets Cloud Crossdress in Different Ways; Tifa & Aerith Have Different Outfits

4 years 2 months ago

Today, Famitsu posted an interview with Final Fantasy VII Remake director Tetsuya Nomura, at it included a few interesting details about the game.

First of all, we learn that there are multiple items that you can use to crossdress as Cloud in the iconic scene returning from the original. That way he can display a different look depending on your choices.

Tifa and Aerith also have different outfits on top of those that have been publicly shown so far.

Interestingly, we learn that the new Barret was designed first among the characters. He had a very deformed physique in the original game, so his new realistic design served as a guideline for the visual feel of the remake.

Red XIII used to have headdresses as his weapons, but for the Remake they have been changed to collars in order to enhance their visibility.

The Turks have been designed by Roberto Ferrari (an Italian character designer who previously worked on Final Fantasy XV and Final Fantasy Type-0). While they all wear suits, which normally would hinder the expression of their personality, they have been given differences and details to make it stand out.

The new character Roche was also designed by Ferrari. We also learn that there are many additional new characters that will appear in the side stories.

While characters from the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII don’t appear directly in the game, it touches on some elements. On the other hand, we’ll see characters from Kazushige Nojima’s novel Final Fantasy VII Gaiden: Turks ~The Kids Are Alright~.

Nomura-san also mentions that sidequests have been created with a focus on quality, in the same way as the main story. Since the city of Midgar is quite big, there are areas where you can travel by vehicle.

Turns out Riot Games’s Project A Is a Tactical Team Shooter Titled Valorant

4 years 2 months ago

Riot Games has been busy as of late. The company started production on a slew of new games —as well as animated shows— that take place in their legendary (pardon the pun) League of Legends universe. Riot is also hard at work on a “precise tactical shooter” that until recently was simply called Project A. The company is finally ready to pull back the curtain on this upcoming game, now known as Valorant.

Over the weekend, Riot Games released an internal development playtest video of Valorant, which reveals tons of juicy details about the game. Judging by the gameplay video, Valorant mixes mechanics from Overwatch and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive/Rainbow Six Siege, turning them into a sort of non-battle royale version of Apex Legends.

Just like in Overwatch and Apex Legends, different characters have unique abilities that impact their roles. While one character might deny enemy movement by laying down poisonous smokescreens, another could provide important recon information by revealing the locations of opponents.

However, Valorant switches up the classic hero shooter formula with a wide selection of purchasable weapons. Players can use in-game currency to buy shotguns, SMGs, assault rifles, heavy weapons, sniper rifles, sidearms, and shields.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms XIV Review – Bad Romance

4 years 2 months ago

Romance of the Three Kingdoms XIV on PC

Romance of the Three Kingdoms XIV is the latest entry in the venerable historical strategy series from developer Koei that debuted before I was born, all the way back in 1985.

Over 14 installments, the Japanese studio has reiterated upon the basic strategy formula that has been at the core of each game in the series: build, expand and conquer.

ROTK XIV takes place during the Three Kingdoms era of Chinese history, a setting that it shares with both the Dynasty Warriors series and the latest Total War game from Creative Assembly, Total War: Three Kingdoms.

And it is hard not to compare ROTK XIV to Total War: Three Kingdoms. Both are set during the same historical conflict, both come from long-running and well-respected strategy franchises, and both were released within a year of each other.

Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous Reveals Shaman Class and Companion, and Videos About Music

4 years 2 months ago

Today Owlcat Games had more updates to share about its upcoming RPG Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous.

First of all, we get word about a new class that will be introduced to the game, the Shaman.

Shamans can interact with the spirits and take advantage of their power. Here’s how Owlcat describes them:

“A person becomes a full-fledged shaman after bonding with one of the spirits and forging a special permanent connection with it. This bond takes the form of a spirit animal, the living embodiment of the chosen spirit. Through it, the shaman not only becomes a divine spellcaster, with the ability to use the forces of nature similar to that of a druid, but also gains the power to channel their bonded spirit’s power into supernatural phenomena.

A shaman who has bonded with a bone spirit can kill enemies with a bone-shattering touch, or even temporarily become incorporeal, shedding their physical form. A wind shaman gains control over lightning, making it strike enemies, and can even become a huge wind elemental, unleashing their power as a tornado. Or, if you like a more personal approach, you can be a battle shaman, bolstering your allies with your rallying cries, making your weapon a bane to enemies, and even turning yourself into an avatar of war with supernatural battle prowess.

That’s not the only thing shamans get through their spirits: they also gain access to hexes similar to those of a witch, such as cursing an enemy with only a glance, making an ally lucky beyond measure, or growing powerful claws. While some of the hexes are available to any shaman, some of them are unique to the shaman’s bonded spirit.

Final Fantasy XIV Artist Shares Many Details About the Popular MMORPG’s Beautiful Artwork

4 years 2 months ago

Today Square Enix hosted a livestreamed panel focusing on the art created for its popular MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV.

The panel was supposed to happen at PAX East, but Square Enix opted to do it from its headquarters in Japan due to the Coronavirus outbreak.

The artwork was presented by producer and director Naoki Yoshida and lead concept artist Yosuke Mogi. You can see it all at the bottom of the post.

We learned that the art for the Blue Mage’s outfit was inspired by the movie “The Greatest Showman.”

When designing the Dancer’s outfit, Mogi-san really wanted to design a male character like a Hrothgar, but there was no other outfit that would fit the Viera as well, so in the end, he had to design a Viera.

The outfit itself was inspired by Maya from Dragon Quest IV.

Interestingly, we also hear that we may see more variation in the design of the chakram in the future. Originally, the idea was to have dancers wield fans. While that would become a bit too similar to Dragon Quest, the team still liked the idea of them to be able to throw a lot of different things.

Most of the weapons we have so far were designed very early in the Shadowbringers’ development process. That’s why they’re all chakrams. In the future we might see different items, and things like giant shuriken could be a possibility.

The Gunbreaker’s outfit had to look a bit more modern in design. It was challenging to make it fit into the world. The pillar from the ruins of Ronka was added to balance the modern with the past.

The original design had a gunblade resembling a light machine gun. Mogi-san was playing a lot of Overwatch at that time. That design was rejected.

GDC 2020 Postponed to Summer After Multiple Companies Pull Out of Event

4 years 2 months ago

If you’ve been keeping up with news updates regarding the annual Game Developers Conference for this year, you’ll know that multiple companies and developers have been pulling out of the event over the past couple of weeks. Because of that, it’s unsurprising to hear that GDC 2020 has officially been postponed from its original March start date.

Over on the official site, it’s been announced that the event will be pushed back to some time in summer. While the reason for the postponement wasn’t explicitly stated in the announcement post, it seems fair to infer that this was primarily due to the Coronavirus concerns from Wuhan, China, along with the fact that so many companies have pulled out of the event.

“We want to thank all our customers and partners for their support, open discussions and encouragement. As everyone has been reminding us, great things happen when the community comes together and connects at GDC. For this reason, we fully intend to host a GDC event later in the summer. We will be working with our partners to finalize the details and will share more information about our plans in the coming weeks.”

The post ends by stating that more information on GDC 2020 will be shared in the coming weeks, and we’ll keep you updated as more news comes our way.

In addition to that, if you’re a developer originally intending to go for the event, gamedev.world has launched a relief effort to help alleviate travel costs and losses.

Doom Eternal Gameplay Shows 1 vs 2 Battlemode Multiplayer and Cosmetics

4 years 2 months ago

Today, during a panel from PAX East, Bethesda showcased new gameplay of the upcoming FPS Doom Eternal, focusing on Battlemode.

Battlemode is an asymmetrical multiplayer mode pitching a Slayer against two player-controlled demons and an army of AI demons.

We get to see both the point of view of the Slayer and that of the demons, including the Marauder in the third match, which is pretty awesome.

While the demons only need to kill the Slayer once (which isn’t easy), the Slayer has to kill both demons to win a round. A match victory is decided with a best of five rounds rule.

When one of the demons dies, the other has to stay alive for 20 seconds before the first can come back (at half health).

GOLF Magazine Presents 36 Great Holes Starring Fred Couples

Dumbest Video Game Titles

dumb

Golf games aren’t strangers to having names in their titles. The PGA Tour games have seen Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy on the cover and in the title.

The thing is, the 1995 game goes a bit further. Not only does it focus on 36 particularly great holes, rather than something generic and golfy, but it’s sponsored by GOLF Magazine.

It sounds more like an issue of GOLF Magazine, with Fred Couples guest editing a feature on 36 great holes, or something like that. As it is, it just seems like a few titles mangled together, acting more like a piece of marketing for the magazine and Fred Couples himself.

All of that and we haven’t gotten into the innuendos… but we’ll just leave it at that.

The more modern Golf Club games have boring titles in hindsight.

Black Desert Online for PC is Free to Keep if You Download it This Weekend

4 years 2 months ago

Black Desert Online, the popular MMORPG from developer Pearl Abyss, is offering up their game completely free starting now through March 2 at 10:00 A.M. You’ll be free to keep and play it it from that point on as long as you claim it before the deadline.

The MMORPG is normally a buy to play title with no mandatory subscription but lots of microtransactions options if that’s something that interests you.

This is a similar model to The Elder Scrolls Online, and differs from Final Fantasy XIV which is buy to play and has a monthly subscription, and Phantasy Star Online 2 which is totally free to download and play but features cosmetic microtransactions to make up the cash.

Although Black Desert Online’s microtrasanctions have turned some people off, a positive aspect about the game is that all major content additions such as expansions and new classes are free.

So if you nab it now while it’s free on Steam and end up liking it, you’ll at be able to enjoy the meat and potatoes of future content at no cost. In other words it’s a pretty low risk commitment if you’re at least intrigued by the now six year old action-heavy MMORPG.

If you end up diving in this weekend or have your own opinion on the game let us know in the comments below.

The Pokemon Company & Daniel Arsham Team up for “Fictional Archaeology” Art Project

4 years 2 months ago

The Pokemon Company has seemingly caught the art collab bug. Earlier this month, they teamed up with skateboard craftsman Bear Walker to produce some sick custom boards, and a few days later, they announced a line of adorable Eevee and Eeveelution figures that will be made by Funko. Starting today, The Pokemon Company has joined forces with another artist to produce actual, bona fide art installations.

According to a press release, The Pokemon Company is collaborating with American artist Daniel Arsham to produce “fictional archaeology” sculptures of Pokemon icons. The concept behind the upcoming art pieces is that people in the future unearth the weathered and decayed remains of Pokemon statues, and Arsham depicts what those hypothetical anachronistic sculptures would look like.

The collaborative Pokemon art pieces will be large bronze statues that, much like Arsham’s previous works, feature missing chunks that simulate natural wear and tear over thousands of years, as well as growing crystals that fill the gaps. Moreover, judging by an associated video, Arsham’s work will potentially include famous characters such as Eevee, Pikachu, Charmander, a trainer (either Ash or Red), Jigglypuff, and Mewtwo.

Sakura Wars for PS4 Gets Story Trailer & Screenshots Showing Uniquely Japanese World & Characters

4 years 2 months ago

Today Sega released a new English trailer and a batch of screenshots of Sakura Wars, known in Japan as Shin Sakura Taisen and previously code-named Project Sakura Wars.

The trailer focuses on the world of the game and on the characters that we’ll meet, also showcasing a glimpse at localized gameplay.

The same can be said about the screenshots, that you can enjoy just below the video, showing all the playable characters and a hint at the localization.

Here’s what Sega itself says about it.

“From the large clock tower atop Ginza train station, dominating the city skyline, to the captivating Imperial Theater standing tall at the heart of Tokyo, Sakura Wars exudes a world rich in historical inspiration and enriched with fantastical steampunk technology.

The Taisho era represents a time of prosperity and optimism for Japan, an intersection of eastern and western cultures that creates a vibrant framework in which to take on the mantle of Seijuro Kamiyama and bring the Imperial Combat Revue back to glory!

Sakura Wars is a reboot that retains many of the features that made the genre-defining series such a hit in Japan, including a poetic vision, a strong cast, and a compelling story filled with intrigue, action, and romance. Our latest trailer puts this portrayal of 1940s Tokyo front and center as it introduces your mission to restore your squad and the theater to prestige.”

Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions Extended Story Trailer Brings Back Epic Anime Memories

4 years 2 months ago

Today Bandai Namco released a new trailer of its upcoming anime soccer game Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions.

To be more precise, this is the extended version of the story trailer released a couple of weeks ago featuring the Tsubasa Episode mode.

This time around on top of the epic action on the field, we get to see many of the familiar scenes from the original anime and manga that happened outside the field, including a few of the secondary characters like our heroes’ mentors and  Hikaru Matsuyama’s girlfriend Yoshiko Fujisawa.

Add to that the game’s own version of the theme song Moete Hero, and the effect is complete.

If you grew up with the anime as I did, prepare to tear up as you watch the trailer below.

While the franchise is certainly very well knon, you may not be familiar with it, as its popularity varies a lot from region to region.

In North America the original Captain Tsubasa anime never rose to similar prominence, I don’t think I’m exaggerating by arguing that in many European and Latin American countries (and of course, Japan) almost every kid grown up in the past forty years knows about it.

New Hyperdimension Neptunia Game VVVTune for PS4 Gets First Screenshots and Release Date

4 years 2 months ago

Today Compile Heart released the first screenshots of the upcoming Hyperdimension Neptunia spinoff game VVVTune. A release date was also announced.

The game will launch in Japan on July 2, 2020, exclusively for PS4. Of course, a western release has not been announced just yet. We’ll have to wait for an announcement from Idea Factory International.

The game will be priced at 7,600 plus taxes for the standard edition, 9,600 yen plus taxes for the limited edition, and 7,300 yen plus taxes for the digital download.

The limited edition will include an artbook, the soundtrack, and four posters.

The images included in the press release plus more published on the official website show familiar waifus from the Hyperdimension Neptunia series, plus plenty original to this game. On top of them, guest virtual YouTubers will appear.

Interestingly, the gameplay will include two different battle systems. The four goddesses from the Neptunia series will feature third-person shooter gameplay, while the virtual idols will fight in action-JRPG style.

The guest virtual YouTubers have been sent to the game’s world and have been captured by an anti-intrusion system. By defeating the evil anti-Vtuber hunters and releasing them, you can unlock them as support.

The game also features a dancing minigame called “BeatTik” in which you can have them wear the accessories earned in the game.

You can check out all the screenshots below.
