2 years 8 months ago

Spoiler Warning: This article contains details that can be considered spoilers for main stories that happen in the following video games. If you consider the knowledge that a game has a twist a spoiler itself, and are worried about that, we don’t recommend reading this article.

A good, jaw-dropping twist is an important piece of storytelling, and video games are no exception. Sure, the gameplay is king, but there’s nothing that instigates an impassioned freak out more than a plot development you hadn’t dreamed of seeing unfold.

So, that leads to an important question: what are some of the most iconic twists in video game history? What moments made you jump out of your chair, nearly choke on whatever food or beverage you have, and hastily call up your friends out of both excitement and confusion? What plot twists truly made you feel truly alive, you know? Let’s kick the tires and get right into it!

Valorant 3.03 Patch Notes Reveal Minor Changes; Dataminers Discover Tournament Mode Incoming

2 years 8 months ago

After a week’s delay, Riot Games is finally ready to unveil Patch 3.03, though it’s hardly much to get excited about if you were after meaningful changes. The anticipated changes to Yoru, for example, have been delayed indefinitely, and the only Agent change is for Viper, whose Pitt formation has now been reverted to around her body, rather than on her crosshair placement.

Elsewhere, Radianite boxes can now also be wall banged from all angles, while new crosshair profiles mean you can finally save your favorite designs instead of having to enter them manually each time.

But without a doubt, the most exciting new features coming to Valorant are ones that haven’t quite made it into Patch 3.03 but have been discovered by dataminers, such as ValorLeaks.

Apart from the fact that Act 1 of Episode 3 has been extended by two weeks, which may come as a welcome surprise to those miles off completing the battle pass, there’s a new tournament mode coming to Valorant. Given how robust it seems, I’m assuming that Riot would be making a bigger deal of it if it were just around the corner, meaning it isn’t likely isn’t set to arrive for some time, possibly beyond the launch of Act 2 in September. Here’s what ValorLeaks uncovered:

Mass Effect Fan Creates Awesome Booklet Using Photo Mode to Recap the Entire First Game

Mass Effect Legendary Edition introduced a lot of pretty awesome quality of life improvements, as it fixed elevator load times, improved combat, and upgraded the game’s overall visual quality. Arguably one of the coolest additions to the game, though, is the brand new photo mode that got added.

We’ve already highlighted a number of awesome photos to come out of this brand new feature, but one fan has decided to take it a step further. Instead of just documenting their journey through the first game by showing off their pictures, a Redditor by the name of Dag-N7 posted an entire gallery booklet that they created using photo mode.

Melty Blood: Type Lumina Gets New Gameplay Trailer Showing Hisui in Action

2 years 8 months ago

Type-moon released a brand new trailer of its upcoming fighting game Melty Blood: Type Lumina, which will soon launch both in Japan and in the west.

The trailer focuses on one of the playable characters, Hisui. Interestingly, it appears that she can be played on her own, on top of as a tag team with Kohaku.

You can check it out below alongside an official description of the characters from the developer.

Hisui

“A maid for the Tohno family, responsible for household chores (except cooking) and taking care of Shiki.
She is Kohaku’s younger twin. Unlike her sister, she is known for wearing more modern, non-traditional clothing.
Her quiet nature makes her true feelings difficult to read, and her formal way of speaking has led Shiki to see her as being rather mechanical. Her fighting skills are not quite on the same level as her sister, but she holds her own well enough.”

Earlier today, Dotemu announced in a press release that Windjammers 2 will be coming to the PS4 and PS5 at the same time as the PC, Switch, and Stadia versions. On top of that, the PlayStation versions of Windjammers 2 will be included in the beta testing for this new game that launches later this year.

The Windjammers 2 beta will let players pick from at least four different characters, each with their own pros and cons. Here are all of the characters mentioned in Dotemu’s release:

The agile and newbie-friendly Steve Miller, the well-balanced Biaggi, the incredibly swift series newcomer Sophie de Lys, and the now-confirmed, tanklike returning star Gary Scott.

Retro Survival Horror Game Tormented Souls Gets New Trailer; Coming Later This Month to Consoles & PC

2 years 8 months ago

Every once in a while a horror game sneaks its way onto the scene with little to no fanfare, and the latest title to do exactly this is Tormented Souls.

Developed in tandem by two indie studios, Dual Effect and Abstract Digital, and published by UK-based company, PQube, Tormented Souls is an old-school, fixed-camera survival horror experience inspired by the original Resident Evil and Alone In The Dark games.

Today, we not only got a new cinematic trailer showcasing the horror title in action, but we also received a concrete release date, too. Specifically, Tormented Souls will be launching on 27 August across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam for a retail price of $19.99/£16.99. Go ahead and feast your eyes on the eerie new cinematic trailer down below:

Clearly, classic survival horror seems to be the order of the day. Creepy fixed camera angles, shadowy corridors and gothic imagery suggest Tormented Souls may well be a scary time worth keeping an eye on. One thing’s for sure: Those monster designs are pretty awesome (read: horrible), which is always a good thing, right?

Tokyo Revengers Live-Action Film Has Exceeded Box Office Revenue of ¥3.2 Billion

2 years 8 months ago

Ever since it was released in Japan on July 9, 2021, the Tokyo Revengers live-action movie has been absolutely dominating the box office. According to a report from Famitsu, the film has exceeded the box office revenue of 3.2 billion yen and the number of spectators of 2.4 million

All of this data comes as of Aug. 9, 2021, meaning that there is still plenty more revenue to come for Tokyo Revengers live-action movie, especially as it is scheduled to be released outside Japan such as Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Thailand.

Based on the popular manga and anime series of the same name, the film’s story is described as followed:

Watching the news, Takemichi Hanagaki learns that his girlfriend from way back in middle school, Hinata Tachibana, has died. The only girlfriend he ever had was just killed by a villainous group known as the Tokyo Manji Gang. He lives in a crappy apartment with thin walls, and his six-years-younger boss treats him like an idiot. Plus, he’s a complete and total virgin … At the height of his rock-bottom life, he suddenly time-leaps twelve years back to his middle school days!! To save Hinata, and change the life he spent running away, hopeless part-timer Takemichi must aim for the top of Kanto’s most sinister delinquent gang!!

There is still no word on whether Tokyo Revengers live-action movie will be headed to the west in the form of an English Dub or Sub, but we will be sure to keep you posted. In the meantime, be sure to check out all of the other Tokyo Revengers and anime-based content we’ve got for you down below.

Crunchyroll Acquired by Sony’s Funimation for Over $1 Billion

2 years 8 months ago

In a recent press release from Sony Pictures Entertainment, it was announced that the eight-month-long process of acquiring Crunchyroll from AT&T through Funimation was complete. At the nontrivial cost of $1.175 billion, Crunchyroll is now officially a part of Funimation.

As of right now, both subscription services remain active as their own streaming services, but CEO of Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc., Tony Vinciquerra, made it clear that their goal is to have a single subscription service when it comes to anime, “Our goal is to create a unified anime subscription experience as soon as possible.” Despite that, no timetables or pricing options were mentioned in the release.

And Sony Group Corporation CEO, Kenichiro Yoshida, talked about their company’s excitement over the deal.

“Anime is a rapidly growing medium that enthralls and inspires emotion among audiences around the globe. The alignment of Crunchyroll and Funimation will enable us to get even closer to the creators and fans who are the heart of the anime community.  We look forward to delivering even more outstanding entertainment that fills the world with emotion through anime.”

The other interesting wrinkle in this whole situation is how it’ll impact the anime that Crunchyroll streams via HBO Max. There was no mention of how or even if the deal between AT&T and Sony would have an impact on the handful of anime series featured on HBO’s streaming service.

Why Did I Ever Stop Playing Hades?

2 years 8 months ago

When I had the opportunity to play Hades for review last year, it felt like the culmination of everything Supergiant Games had done up to that point. The wonderful voice acting, the beautiful and distinct art style, a strong narrative direction, and most importantly, fast-paced action gameplay that could keep you hooked for easily a hundred hours and more. Hades felt like a nearly flawless iteration of the rogue-lite genre, and the PlayStation and Xbox releases are just another reminder of that.

I’ve spent the past week or so checking out the PS5 build of the game, and yeah, it’s just as good as I remember it.

The first thing you’ll notice is how snappy the load times are. Just like pretty much every other game that runs on the PS5, Hades makes good use of the internal SSD to make the load times feel practically non-existent. Indeed, whenever I boot up the game, I’m taken to the main menu and into my save file within a matter of seconds. It’s certainly on par with the load times I get on my PC, and that’s pretty nice.

There is one important thing to note about these versions of the game, though. While the PC and Switch versions support cross-save, allowing you to carry over your progress between platforms seamlessly, that feature does not exist on PlayStation and Xbox due to technical complications. It’s unclear whether that’ll ever change, but it’s something to consider if you’re thinking about double-dipping on Hades.

F1 2021 Gets Ray Tracing Back on PS5, But 3D Audio Has Been Disabled

2 years 8 months ago

F1 2021 has had a bit of a rocky launch period with various bugs and gameplay issues popping up, especially in the PS5 version. Just last month, developing studio Codemasters released a patch that removed ray tracing from the PS5 build to help with stability issues.

They quickly released another patch to enable it again, but just this week, they’ve pushed out yet another patch to remove another key feature in the PS5 version. This time around, 3D audio has been disabled in the PS5 build, as players have found that the sound of their own car would sometimes get drowned out by the background noise of other nearby cars.

The patch notes are pretty extensive and you can check them out here, and Codemasters have also stated that 3D audio will be restored once those audio issues have been resolved.

F1 2021 is now available on PC and consoles.

Originally released back in 2018, Darksiders III is a fast-paced and frenetic action game in which you play as Fury, who is tasked with hunting down the seven deadly sins. And now, three years later, THQ Nordic has finally announced that the game will be coming to the Switch next month as well.

The game will be getting both a digital and physical release on Sept. 30.

Players return to an apocalyptic planet Earth in Darksiders III, a hack-n-slash action-adventure where players take on the role of FURY in her quest to hunt down and dispose of the Seven Deadly Sins. The Charred Council calls upon FURY to battle from the heights of heaven down through the depths of hell in a quest to restore the balance between good and evil and prove that she is the fiercest of the FOUR HORSEMEN.
FURY is a mage, her form evolving throughout gameplay and with it, her powers and weaponry. The expansive Darksiders III game world is presented as an open-ended, living, free-form planet Earth, dilapidated by war and decay, and overrun by nature. FURY will traverse back and forth between environments, battling other-worldly creatures and unlocking puzzles while advancing the Darksiders story.

Venture Bros. Episodes Will be Bingeable on HBO Max Starting This Friday

2 years 8 months ago

The incredibly popular Venture Bros. series, originally tied to Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim, will be making its HBO Max debut this week on Friday, Aug. 13. Caught by Swimpedia, the new commercial not only reveals the date that HBO Max will begin allowing subscribers to watch Venture Bros., but that there will also be a marathon tonight, Aug, 9, on Adult Swim to celebrate.

Though the Venture Bros. animated series was cancelled by Adult Swim and WarnerMedia, all parties seem to have come together again along with HBO this time in order to not only get the episodes on HBO Max, but also produce a feature-length movie as well.

This is in addition to new original movies within the Aqua Teen Hunger Force and Metalocalypse franchises as well. The three shows are arguably three of the most popular, iconic, and important shows ever featured on Adult Swim, so as long as the showrunners, fans, and executives all have an appetite for more, it’s not a total shock that more content would be on the way.

Latest Humankind Trailer Showcases the 4x Strategy Game’s Scale, Variety, & Customization

2 years 8 months ago

Humankind is about a week and a half away, and Amplitude Studios and Sega are ratcheting up the marketing and hype before the big release. The game’s latest trailer titled: The Scale of Humankind, is aimed directly at showing off how different each game can be.

The trailer touts 60 historical cultures and over 1 million unique civilizations. I’m not a Humankind expert, so I’m not entirely sure how it gets to 1 million unique civilizations, but I have to imagine that is achieved through customization tweaks of some kind.

Humankind is going to have 129 different units, ten different terrain/biomes, 45 different animals, 93 researchable technologies, and lots of customization options for your leader.

The upcoming 4X strategy game draws a lot of comparisons to Civilization as Humankind, visually, looks very similar to one another and they both occupy the same genre. However, after going hands-on with Humankind, there are definitely some key differences that can be gleaned out, such as your culture/civilization evolving more organically (rather than locking yourself into one, and some unique gameplay features such as actually having to hunt for your food early on.

Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice Gets Free Xbox Series X|S Upgrade

2 years 8 months ago

Today, UK-based developer Ninja Theory has announced that its acclaimed psychological action-adventure game, Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice, will be receiving a new update that will improve its visuals and performance on Xbox Series X|S.

That’s right, the new upgrade will leverage the extra graphical and processing grunt of next-gen Xbox consoles and will allow players to experience the game in all its psychosis-inducing glory. Specifically, the latest patch – which is available to download now – will add enhanced visual fidelity and DirectX ray-tracing, as well as introducing a new resolution mode, which will presumably feature 4K support.

Interestingly, this new update coincides with the game’s four year anniversary. Accompanying the recent announcement is a freshly cut trailer outlining the newly added optimizations on Xbox Series X|S. Go ahead and check out said trailer down below:

The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf Animated Film Shows More of Vesemir Ahead of Debut on Netflix

2 years 8 months ago

Netflix will soon start streaming the Witcher animated film titled The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf, and today we get a new trailer.

The trailer shows more of the cartoon’s protagonist, Geralt of Rivia’s old friend and mentor Vesemir, in a much younger and snazzier guise.

We also get to see more of the cast of characters that we’ll meet while watching the animated film that will delve in the past of the popular franchise made famous by the games by CD Projekt RED.

You can watch it below and enjoy an older teaser trailer on top of the second.

Below you can read a brief official description from Netflix itself (which misidentifies it as an “anime,” but there’s no Japanese involvement in this production).

“The world of “The Witcher” expands in this 2D anime film that explores a powerful new threat facing the Continent.”
