Fuser Is A Music Mashup Game That Makes You Feel Like A Creative Prodigy

3 years 10 months ago

It's been about a decade since rhythm games had any major spotlight, but they never really went away. Beat Saber was probably the closest we go to having another resurgence--the VR space now has a bunch of great rhythm-focussed titles if you're willing to splurge on the expensive hardware (a familiar feeling for genre fans, no doubt). Elsewhere, Japan and Korea still exist, and as a result, so do insane beat-matching games for the inhuman among us.

I've noticed a little trend of rhythm games coming out this year that lean on the idea of being a DJ. DJMAX Respect V from Korea got a PC release, which subscribes heavily to the school of Konami's Beatmania series in which DJs are just folks who are really good at smashing out house tunes on a piano. We also have the wonderful Spin Rhythm from Australia, a game that focuses on recreating the analog joys of spinning and scratching a turntable.

Mixer's Collapse Due To Overspending And Toxic Work Conditions, Report Suggests

3 years 10 months ago

The June 25 announcement that Microsoft's game streaming platform Mixer would be shuttered came as a surprise to most, though company insiders have revealed that Mixer has struggled for some time both with internal culture and service issues. A new report by Business Insider features interviews with former Mixer employees, including the company's co-founder Matt Salsamendi, to find out what happened.

Mixer began its life in 2016 as a small start-up called Beam, created by Matt Salsamendi and James Boehm, which was soon. As a competitor to the already-established Twitch, the new service focused on low-latency streaming, allowing better interaction between streamer and audience. While the concepts behind Mixer had promise, it always struggled to compete with Twitch's overwhelming market share.

One of the biggest problems pegged by insiders that led to Mixer's demand was one the platform is publicly infamous for--spending alleged tens of millions of dollars to attract Twitch's top talent. One former employee said that in 2017 the company hosted a lecture called "Why not just hire PewDiePie?" which argued the value of boosting smaller streamers on Mixer rather than trying to poach big names from other platforms.

Last Of Us, Uncharted Dev Talks About Moving On To PlayStation 5

3 years 10 months ago

Naughty Dog just released The Last of Us Part II on PlayStation 4, and it could be the developer's final game for the console. The team will presumably shift to the PlayStation 5 for its next game, whether that be The Last of Us Part II, a new IP, or something else entirely. Naughty Dog VP Neil Druckmann has now spoken about the PS5 and what it will allow the developer to achieve.

In an appearance on former Nintendo boss Reggie Fils-Aime's new podcast, Druckmann said the PS5's new SSD will help cut down on load times, which will in turn open new doors for Naughty Dog's developers.

Druckmann pointed out that Naughty Dog already works hard to minimize loading zones in its games, but this is only possible due to technical wizardry happening behind the scenes that the player never sees. With the PS5, developers won't need to be as crafty, Druckmann teased.

Last Of Us 2 Director Responds To Internet Hate

3 years 10 months ago

Seven years after the release of the original, The Last of Us Part II is finally out now on PlayStation 4. Even before release, writer-director Neil Druckmann acknowledged that some fans of the first game would dislike the sequel, and now that the game is out, he's responded to more of the internet hate.

Speaking on former Nintendo boss Reggie Fils-Aime's podcast, Druckmann said it's worthless to fight against people when they share their opinions about a game--whether it be good or bad. However, Druckmann said he can't understand how people get so worked up and upset about fictional characters.

"I think you have to create some separation to say, we made this game, we believe in this game, we're proud of this game, now it's out there and it's like whatever reaction people have--whether they like it or not--that's fair," Druckmann said. "That's their reaction and you don't fight that. The other thing with the more hateful stuff, the more vile stuff, that's a little harder. It's especially harder when I see it happening to team members or cast members who play a particular character in the game."

Cyberpunk 2077 Lets You Pet The Cat

3 years 10 months ago

First impressions of Cyberpunk 2077 have started rolling in after a number of journalists spent time with a demo of the upcoming CD Projekt game. However only IGN's preview seems to have unearthed a very important feature of the game: that you can, in fact, pet the cat.

The preview unfortunately didn't go into too much detail on whether there is just a single, pettable cat to be found, or whether multiple are dispersed throughout the game, but it's still a big improvement on The Witcher 3's disappointingly Witcher-averse cats. Whether dogs are present or pettable in Cyberpunk 2077 still has yet to be seen.

While "can you pet the dog?" has long been an important question in video game criticism, inspired by the Twitter account of the same name, cats are only just starting to get the same kind of recognition in virtual petting.

This Indie Game Will Be On Xbox Game Pass For "A Long Time" Because It's Been Great For Sales

3 years 10 months ago

Descenders joined Xbox Game Pass in May 2019, and since then, according to Mike Rose (head of publisher No More Robots), the indie cycling game has seen greatly increased sales on Xbox. Although conventional wisdom would suggest that a game that was available at no additional cost on a popular subscription service might see lower direct sales, Rose says that, in fact, the opposite has been true.

Rose took to Twitter to explain why Xbox Game Pass has been so good for the game, saying that it has "elevated the game to heights we couldn't have imagined." Descenders, which is available in both the Xbox and PC catalogs of the subscription service, is currently the eighth most popular game on the service.

Rose said that a new deal has recently been struck to keep the game on Game Pass for "a looong time to come," as since joining the service it is selling "around five times as many units each week" as it did previously.

Jet Set Radio Designer Explains Why A Sequel Hasn't Happened Yet, And Who Could Make One

3 years 10 months ago

Dreamcast classic Jet Set Radio and its Xbox sequel Jet Set Radio Future are beloved for their style and unique gameplay, but to this day there's never been a third game in the series. The original game (initially called Jet Grind Radio in the US) released 20 years ago, and in a retrospective published by USGamer, the team behind the game has reflected on its legacy--and why there hasn't been a follow-up.

Lead designer Kazuki Hosokawa, who still works at Sega, reflects on how the original Jet Set Radio was created by a young team, recalling how "non-photorealistic expressions began to garner more attention" at the time, which his team was able to leverage.

With this in mind, Hosokawa says that a new Jet Set Radio would need to come from a young, new team as well. He says that "more than 10 years ago," the game's producer told the team that they were "too old and experienced" to make a new game in the series, and he agrees. "I've gained enough experience that I can identify what works and how to present things... I can see the path to the end goal, whether I like it or not," he says.

In one of the year's bigger NFL offseason moves, the New England Patriots have signed former Carolina Panthers QB Cam Newton to fill the void after Tom Brady left for the Buccaneers.

Crysis Remastered Will Debut Gameplay This Week, Watch It Here

3 years 10 months ago

Crysis Remastered was officially revealed with a teaser a few weeks ago, but this week we'll finally get to see exactly what the nearly 13-year-old game will look like with some improved graphical features.

The gameplay debut for Crysis Remastered is set for July 1 and will go live at 12 PM ET / 9 AM PT / 6 PM CEST. Although no details about what will be shown have been shared, Crytek did reveal in its initial announcement that the remaster will introduce a "hardware and API-agnostic ray tracing solution," which will allow the graphical enhancement to run on current-generation consoles.

Crysis Remastered is expected to just include the first game, which was originally developed by Crytek in 2007. It was set on an island that featured wide combat areas, letting you experiment with how you used a variety of suit powers to dispatch enemies. Both Crysis 2 and Crysis 3 converted this formula into a more traditional linear shooter, while also streamlining some of your suit powers, making some fans yearn for the return of the original.

The Best Nintendo Switch Grip Now Comes In Animal Crossing-Inspired Colors

3 years 10 months ago

There's a lot to love about the Nintendo Switch--its portability, its exclusives, its relatively affordable price tag--but for a console that's designed to also be used as a handheld, there's a major drawback: Portable mode is just uncomfortable. The flat Switch and Joy-Cons offer very little to grab onto when you're trying to play in bed, on the couch, or elsewhere, and because of the button placement, it's easy for your hands to start feeling a little cramped. It's a little surprising Nintendo hasn't come out with an official accessory of its own to address this issue, but fortunately, several third-party accessories brands have.

Nintendo Switch grips attach onto the console and give you a much more ergonomic grip when playing handheld, and one of the best Nintendo Switch grips just became even more appealing, as it's now available in two new shades that are clearly inspired by Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

Microsoft will reportedly announce its lower-powered next-gen console in August after a quiet June. According to a report by Eurogamer, Microsoft had originally planned to announce the console, codenamed Lockhart, as part of its Xbox E3 press conference during June, which was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Microsoft announced that it would be doing monthly events leading up to the release of the console, named Xbox 20/20, starting in May. It is unknown when exactly the decision was made to move the reveal from June to August, but June will end without an Xbox 20/20 event. The rumored Xbox Series S reportedly has the same CPU as the high-end Xbox Series X, with a different GPU and less usable RAM. The console is also rumored to not have a disc drive and be cheaper than the Series X.

With The Last of Us Part II out, Sony's focus is now shifting towards Ghost of Tsushima. The Sucker Punch-developed open-world game is out on July 17, and a new trailer reminds you of the imminent threat you'll have to face.

The pre-rendered trailer helps set the tone for protagonist Jin and his journey, showing you the island of Tsushima before war washed up on its shores. The contrast between the colorful and serene scenes with those of smoke-covered horizons and the sparks of clashing swords is effective at showing just how engrossing this setting can be. Check it out below.

If you're looking for a better representation of what it'll be like to play Ghost of Tsushima, Sony recently revealed a lot of footage from the game during its latest State of Play stream. It includes a look at how you'll get around the world, the differences between its melee and stealth combat, and a variety of filters that can help you make the game resemble some of your favorite classic samurai films.

Let's Overreact To What Hideo Kojima Has On His Desk

3 years 10 months ago

Hideo Kojima has never been shy about messing with his fans, and a recent tweet is no exception. In it, Kojima reveals the contents of his desk-top, which includes a BB from his last game, Death Stranding. There's been no word on a sequel to his divisive take on the "walking simulator" as of yet, and some fans are hoping this tweet indicates a tease of sorts.

The photo also includes a sketch of what appears to be a Star Destroyer, which is a spacecraft from Star Wars. If somehow Hideo Kojima manages to make an official Star Wars game, our lives would never be the same, but that possibility seems rather dubious for now.

Ubisoft Teases Hyper Scape, Reportedly A New Battle Royale Game

3 years 10 months ago

Update: Not long after word of the game first surfaced, Ubisoft's teaser site has gone live, confirming the Hyper Scape name. The website itself doesn't offer a lot of information about the game, instead focusing on some of the lore surrounding it, and in particular, a company names Prisma Dimensions. More importantly, it points to a specific date--Hyper Scape will apparently be revealed on July 2, or we'll at least be learning more about it then. Some additional art has also surfaced online, as seen in the tweet below.

Original story: The biggest publishers in gaming have each taken their shot with successful triple-A battle royale games like Apex Legends and Call of Duty: Warzone, and it looks like Ubisoft is about to try its hand at it. According to esports reporter Rod Breslau, the publisher will tease a new game called Hyper Scape this week, which is a battle royale game set in a virtual world.

3 years 10 months ago

Today, June 29 marks the 20th anniversary of Diablo 2, the dungeon-crawling game that's still seen by many to be a genre-defining experience. Blizzard is marking the anniversary with some retrospectives, special merch, and a free in-game item in Diablo 3.

In a post on the Blizzard blog, the company outlines some of the ways you can celebrate the classic loot-hunting game today. Those include an animated short (below), a detailed retrospective, and a speedrun from MrLlamaSC. The company also unveiled a new Lord of Terror bust, which goes for $140.

But if you just want to celebrate one classic dungeon crawler by playing another, you can log in to Diablo 3 anytime after June 29 to claim a pair of Prime Evil Wings. "Baal--as we saw in him in Diablo 2--did not have wings, but try to imagine what they would’ve looked like if he did, and if you could've fastened them to your hero's shoulders," says Blizzard.
