Gravity Circuit feels far fresher than any other retro platformer

9 months 3 weeks ago

I have a complicated relationship with retro-style games in general, and no particular fondness for the Everything Was Nintendo school. Or platformers, or double jumping, or dashing, or neon, or being alive in general. Dislike is the wrong word, but "weary neutrality" about covers my feelings when another retro platformer comes down the game tubes.

Gravity Circuit, however, is good enough that I can't not mention it here. It's loud and bright without being obnoxious or overwhelming, fast and precise without being overly demanding, and generally just a damn good effort at creating a modern action platformer whose main influence is obvious, but isn't just going through the motions for the sake of nostalgia. I'm saying it's good, yeah? Maybe not quite for me, but good anyway.

Here's our first look at Maggie Robertson in Baldur's Gate 3

9 months 3 weeks ago

Maggie Robertson, known for her towering roles in both Resident Evil Village and God of War Ragnarök, is set to play Orin the Red in Baldur's Gate 3.

While we have known about her inclusion for a while now, with developer Larian confirming it to our Bertie earlier in the month, her magical, menace of a character had remained largely under wraps until now. However, new details have now been released about this "grandmaster of murder".

In a new video, Robertson introduced her upcoming villain as "affectionately unhinged", revealing that players won't know when she is about to pop up in Balder's Gate 3 thanks to her shapeshifting abilities. In fact, Orin is able to take the form of anyone - "perhaps even someone in your camp".

Here's a gameplay trailer for Patapon's spiritual successor Ratatan

9 months 3 weeks ago

Ratata Arts has released a new Ratatan gameplay trailer, to whet appetites for the rhythm strategy game.

The developer said Ratatan's gameplay will incorporate a "unique combination of rhythm and strategy", and see players taking on the role of a conductor. This conductor has the very important job of controlling an army of the titular Ratatan, which will be able to "attack, defend and support" as they march against other armies in the game.

Additionally, these music loving animal-like creatures will be able to "gather 'Cobuns' that can chant, move and attack according to the instructions". As a result of all this musical mayhem, the developer has promised "one massive rhythmic showdown!" You can see how it all looks in the video below.

Dawntrail Officially Announced as Final Fantasy 14's Fifth Major Expansion

9 months 3 weeks ago

Dawntrail will be Final Fantasy XIV's fifth major expansion, Square Enix announced today. The new expansion was unveiled during the Final Fantasy XIV Fan Fest keynote with a trailer featuring a summer vacation theme and multiple new jobs, all coming summer of 2024.

At Final Fantasy Fan Fest 2023, FF14 director Naoki Yoshida (affectionately known as Yoshi-P) took the stage to unveil the new expansion, joyfully declaring he wanted to continue to work on the game "until I die or even afterward."

Dawntrail's story is intended to be "the very best summer vacation a hero could possibly have," in "a sudden change from the ending of Endwalker" and marks the first step into a "new story" for the game. It takes place in the "New World," known officially as Tural, which lies over the ocean to the far west of Eorzea. There, the Warriors of Light will assist in a rite of succession to determine Tural's next ruler. The rite involves a contest that eventually takes them to the gates of a "fabled city of gold." Of course, the Scions will be involved in this, but Yoshi-P warns that the contest may divide the Scions into two factions...

In Tural, players will get access to a new hub city: Tuliyollal, a city with an emphasis on diversity located in a larger region called Yok Tural. It's not very industrialized, but is inhabited by diverse groups of people focused on living in harmony with nature, and is ruled by Gulool Ja Ja, a two-headed Mamool Ja. The contest at the heart of Dawntrail is to determine who will succeed him.

Developers and Analysts Sound Off: Does the Next-Gen Nintendo Switch Need to Happen in 2024?

9 months 3 weeks ago

It’s Switch 2 rumor season again. Numerous reports of varying credibility have begun to crop up in recent months about a potential new console from Nintendo. We’ve heard everything from whispers of circulating devkits, to manufacturers preparing for increased sales, to analysts and competitors bracing for the financial impact. The discussions have stirred up concerns about backward compatibility following the massive success of the original Switch, given Nintendo’s rocky history with preservation of its own games. And fan communities and podcasts like ours on IGN are speculating wildly about what Nintendo’s next hardware might look like – whether it might be more of a Switch 2, or something new entirely. We know for a fact it’s not happening until at least April 2024, but beyond that? The door’s wide open. Let the speculation flow.

For now, no one knows the truth of any of this except Nintendo itself. But there is one question we can try to answer with our own paltry knowledge: does Nintendo even need a Switch successor next year?

Fight With the Fury of the Norse Gods in Gods of Asgard?

9 months 3 weeks ago

Ragnarok is coming to wipe out mortals and gods alike, but if you triumph in boss encounters with the likes of Fenrir the apocalyptic wolf and the massive serpent Jormungard, the world might yet have a fighting chance.

Myth: Gods of Asgard's ever-changing isometric battlegrounds and fast-paced action brings to mind the critically acclaimed Hades. If you've already conquered the Greek Pantheon, it makes sense to see what you can do as a warrior ordered to prevent Ragnarok. Moreover, if you're a God of War fan, you're already familiar with exchanging a Greek setting for the cold Norse winds. Just pack some shaggy underwear and you'll be fine.

In her tweet, Salome showed the back of her character and did not specify where to find her in Honkai: Star Rail. However, replies to her tweet showed the location if you want to see her for yourself. At the bottom of the Central Starskiff Haven, there’s a Vending Machine with a woman in front of it. Here’s What’s Coming in Final Fantasy XIV 7.0

9 months 3 weeks ago

What's Coming in FFXIV 7.0

Dawntrail, the fifth expansion for the critically acclaimed MMORPG FFXIV, is coming out in Summer 2024. The release marks the beginning of the 7.x line of patches, starting with 7.0. Here's what we know is coming in Final Fantasy XIV 7.0 and beyond.

What is Final Fantasy XIV update 7.0 bringing with it?

One of the biggest changes coming in 7.0 is a level cap increase. As of Endwalker's release in December 2021, the level cap has been set at 90—Final Fantasy XIV 7.0 boosts this to 100.

Another notable change is a graphical overhaul. Significant tweaks to lighting and textures are on the way, breathing new life into character models, locations, dungeons, and more. This does mean that the FFXIV system requirements are changing slightly.

7.0 FFXIV Next Graphical Update Will Improve Visuals

9 months 3 weeks ago

FFXIV Next Graphic Update Dawntrail 7.0

FFXIV will receive a major graphical update alongside the release of the upcoming Dawntrail expansion. This is the latest major graphical update for the game since its release, radically updating many of the textures, armor, equipment, and characters.

The FFXIV graphical update in the new expansion’s 7.0 update includes updated higher resolution textures and shadows. These will affect all of the races and characters, significantly changing how they look. This includes both the player characters and the NPCs alike.

Hair, skin textures, eyes, and more will improve considerably over the currently existing visuals. In addition, the character’s equipment will feature greater detail, including the materials, giving a cleaner look. The improvements are meant to make everything look better without losing what made them so loved in the first place.

In addition to the characters, areas in the game will feature greater details, shadows, and lighting. This includes not only the new locations in Dawntrail, but also the older environments as well. One of the most significant changes are to the plants in locations like Il Mheg where they will look richer in color and detail.

Other changes include the following:

Final Fantasy X's Pelupelu Are Joining FFXIV in Dawntrail

During the Final Fantasy XIV Fan Fest 2023 keynote, Director and Producer Naoki Yoshida announced the Final Fantasy X Pelupelu race will appear in the FFXIV Dawntrail expansion. They will be the new Allied Tribe. As usual, they are described as a diminutive race compared to the height of humans and other races. People will find them in Tural, outside the main city in Urqopacha settlements.

Yoshida noted that these new people always wear masks. They also act as traders around Tural. Some of the things they tend to make and sell are various drinks, with coffee, mezcal, and tea mentioned.

Here’s the official slide from the presentation that offered initial FFXIV Pelupelu details.

Pelupelu first appeared in Final Fantasy X and X-2. However, they also made a Mobius Final Fantasy cameo. We never actually see their faces in that game, due to them always wearing hats and masks with goggles and penguin-like beaks.

Final Fantasy XIV Dawntrail Location Is the New World Tural

9 months 3 weeks ago

FFXIV Dawntrail Tural

Dawntrail is the fifth expansion for the long-running MMORPG. Alongside new content, characters, and a story, players will have the opportunity to explore a new side of the world. The new Final Fantasy XIV Dawntrail location is known as Tural. During the 2023 Fan Fest, Director and Producer Naoki Yoshida offered some initial details about it.

Tural is an island nation in the far west of the world, past Eorzea in a previously unexplored location in Final Fantasy XIV Dawntrail. The people of Tural live among nature in a bright island lifestyle. The new hub city for players to explore and spend plenty of time in is Tuliyollal in the Yok Tural region of the island.

This new city is at the heart of the story of Dawntrail, with the ruler of the city being Gulool Ja Ja, who is a two-headed Mamool Ja. The crux of the plot will revolve around the next ruler of the capital city of the city-state. This new city is a colorful market-centric port side town.

The region of Yok Tural where Tuliyollal is based is a forest region. This dense forest area is so thick with trees that the forest floor rarely sees any sunlight. Players will be able to explore the forest floor and high-elevation areas alike.

Players will also be able to explore the region of Urqopacha, which is a mountainous region. It is home to a mix of exceedingly large and unusually small races.

FFXIV Dawntrail Story Is a ‘Summer Vacation’ Set in Tural

FFXIV Dawntrail Story Is a ‘Summer Vacation’ Set in Tural

After announcing the new expansion at the 2023 Fan Fest, Director and Producer Naoki Yoshida announced details about the FFXIV Dawntrail story and how it takes people to the “New World” location of Tural for a “summer vacation.” The theme color this time is gold, and is part of a “journey of discovery.”

When introducing FFXIV Dawntrail’s story, Yoshida said, “What we want to bring to all you Warriors of Light is the very best summer vacation a hero could possibly have.” He noted this is a “first step” for the next adventure for the game. We’ll head to Tural alongside the Scions to help pick the new ruler during a rite of succession. However, Yoshida teased that the Scions will be split into two groups. So people might not end up being your allies during the adventure. The winner takes the throne from Gulool Ja Ja, the Mamool Ja ruling the new city.

There’s also rumor of a “City of Gold.” The initial story teases suggest that the events of this contest for the new ruler will involve players reaching it.

Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart PC tech analysis - this port needed more time

9 months 3 weeks ago

Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart is out now on PC, two years after it launched as a PS5 exclusive. It's always fascinating to see how Sony's flagship titles fare on PC, especially those produced by porting specialist Nixxes. Rift Apart is also a cutting-edge effort - it's one of the first to support DirectStorage GPU decompression, which ought to shrink load times and raise performance. This analysis reviews the quality of the PC port at launch (with some commentary on the new patch that just 'dropped') with derived PS5-equivalent and optimised settings for a range of hardware, plus DirectStorage 1.2 tests. There's plenty to praise from Insomniac's latest PC release - along with a litany of graphical bugs and issues that suggest the game needed a little more time in the oven.

Ratchet and Clank's options are immediately familiar to anyone that's played Nixxes' Spider-Man PC ports, with a real-time tweaking menu and a good array of options for users to take advantage of including upscaling options from all GPU vendors. The settings menu is generally easy to use - though a flash effect when making changes sometimes obscures the nature of the change. Weirdly though, the main menu runs below 60fps on mid-range hardware without obvious CPU or GPU utilisation.

There are more serious issues elsewhere in the game, which suggest Rift Apart has launched without the typical polish we'd expect from a Nixxes release. For example, we experienced a handful of game crashes on a range of hardware within the first few hours of play, from a high-end Core i9 12900K and RTX 4090 rig to a minimum-spec build with the Ryzen 3 3100 and RX 570.

Grab Sony's excellent DualSense gamepad for £40 after a £20 discount

9 months 3 weeks ago

Sony's DualSense controller is one of the premiere options on PC, offering enhanced trigger rumble ('adaptive triggers') in a handful of games on top of excellent ergonomics and high-quality buttons that are much appreciated in a huge number of racing, action and other titles. These controllers normally cost around £50 to £60, but today they're down to £40 – as part of a Sony summer sale that sees the Sony console drop from £479 to £399.

There are a wide range of colours available, far beyond the white models that launched with the console in 2020. I'm a fan of the black and camouflage options, but there's also red, pink and blue. Here are links to Amazon and Currys, with the latter offering all colours apart from purple at £40 at the time of writing and Amazon only for black, white and blue.

Naoki Yoshida Is Wearing a TMNT: Mutant Mayhem Shirt and Final Fantasy 14 Fans Want to Know Why

9 months 3 weeks ago

While Final Fantasy XIV director Naoki Yoshida may just be a fan of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the TMNT: Mutant Mayhem shirt he was wearing during the Final Fantasy XIV Fan Fest keynote has led fans to believe he is teasing something more.

Much like Xbox boss Phil Spencer does, Yoshida (who is affectionately known as Yoshi-P) actually has a history of wearing shirts to tease upcoming content in Final Fantasy XIV. For example, he wore a Batman shirt before the Dark Knight class was revealed and a Bugs Bunny shirt before the Viera race was announced.

This latest tease has obviously caused fans to start guessing what it all means, especially after Yoshi-P revealed Final Fantasy 14's fifth major expansion, Dawntrail, and said two DPS jobs would be arriving alongside it. While Yoshi-P wasn't ready to share what these new jobs were or if they were related to the turtles, he did unveil it as he was talking about them.

Diablo 4 Campfire Chat Opens With Grim Devs, Long List of Promised Fixes

9 months 3 weeks ago

In the latest Campfire Chat for Diablo 4, Blizzard announced a host of upcoming balance changes in a livestream that opened with a somber tone.

In a lengthy stream in which developers discussed upcoming changes to their hit ARPG, the mood seemed quite grim initially, as the usually smiling panel were seen with more serious expressions after a tough week of critical feedback from the Diablo IV community. In the past, many of the familiar faces could be seen smiling and making jokes, especially in the opening moments of their Campfire Chats, but today's presentation had a noticably different mood.

It's also worth noting that Campfire Chats have been described by Blizzard as casual discussions where patch notes aren't discussed, but they broke from that tradition in today's stream and detailed a lengthy list of promised changes to Diablo IV, which mostly focused on the two character classes that have received the most complaints online: the Barbarian and the Sorcerer.

Final Fantasy 14 Getting a Major Graphics Update with New Requirements for Dawntrail Expansion

Final Fantasy XIV is receiving a major graphics makeover in an update for the upcoming Dawntrail expansion.

At Final Fantasy Fest 2023, producer Naoki Yoshida said in the Final Fantasy XIV keynote that the graphics update will improve the screen-wide aesthetic appeal and higher-resolution textures and shadows. The quality of the improved material in the game preserves the overall look you know and love, specifically the look and feel of existing characters.

"We're really taking care that you'll look at your updated character and won't say, 'Oh that's really not what I expected at all,'" Yoshida said, pointing out that all the characters, including NPCs, will have improved hair texture, improved eyes, and beautiful skin.

The update will buff up the metal on armor and other objects to make them shinier than they were in the game's previous updates. Even more so now that the lighting will be enhanced.

"You'll notice that the 7.0 areas are kind of prettier than the previous areas," Yoshida said. "But in the old areas things like the shadow improvements and the lighting will be automatically applied. It will take some time to add those extra objects I mentioned, but in terms of visuals it will look better."

The game's vegetation will also be given a brighter pop of color. Enhanced lighting will be automatically applied in the update, but the poly count won't increase as much.
