Venba - tasty puzzles and a recipe book

9 months 2 weeks ago

After not visiting the cinema in recent years thanks to the pandemic, I've now been eight times in the last three months. One thing that's bugged me, though, is how the duration of your average Hollywood film is now close to a Bollywood film, but with fewer musical dance numbers to break up the experience. Venba, on the other hand, is a lean experience, lasting about the length of an enjoyable trip to the restaurant. This is ideal, given the puzzles and story both revolve around food.

The story begins in 1988, with an immigrant couple, Venba and her husband, settling down in Canada fresh from India, and trying to adjust their day-to-day lives for this new, bitter environment. How is it going? The first scene shows us Venba feeling unwell, lying down on the sofa, looking tired and dishevelled. Her husband keeps asking whether Venba is okay, but she brushes his concerns off, making light of her ordeal. We have to make her first choice here: continue to lie down and rest, or avoid a hungry husband by making him some lunch before he heads out for work?

The gameplay revolves around making conversation choices, and interacting with ingredients and utensils in the kitchen to create food, with an overhead view you'd find in familiar vlogs and cooking tutorials. There's a puzzle element to the way you cook. You sometimes have to get the exact order of the ingredients correct, move your mouse or analogue stick to stir things up, or fill in the gaps of each recipe. It's nothing too demanding, and there are hints you can ask for at the bottom of the screen if you're not very kitchen-inclined.

Patapon creator's new rhythm strategy game Ratatan is heading to PC

9 months 2 weeks ago

Update: Ratatan's Kickstarter campaign is live now and merrily marched past its first funding goal (£109,000 / $141,000 / ¥20,000,000) in under an hour. The FAQ section states the team feels "very confident in getting everything into the game by April 2025." I'll have the rat-rat-rat-tan chant stuck in my head until then.

Original Story: Patapon’s beloved blend of rhythm and strategy has been sadly relegated to PlayStation consoles, but a new spiritual successor is bringing that cutesy charm to PC as long as the game finds success on Kickstarter. Ratatan was announced at this year’s Bitsummit, and it’s coming from developer Ratata Arts who are led by developers who worked on the original Patapon series. The newest trailer (below) shows off the game’s adorable singing soldiers. Take a look.

The joy of Elden Ring's Limgrave, a Souls game in miniature

9 months 2 weeks ago

What lies beyond Limgrave? I honestly don’t know. I’ve muddled my way through Elden Ring’s starting peninsula three times now, but have yet to step foot beyond the crumbling gatehouse of Stormveil Castle. The second Godrick The Grafted is reduced to a sickly pile of wobbly limbs, I turn the game off and walk away.

It’s not that I don’t like Elden Ring. I’m not struggling to connect with its open world take on the Souls genre. I’m not put off by the difficult encounters that await me, or the obtuse challenges I’ll be forced to overcome. The answer is weirdly simple. Limgrave provides me with everything I could ever want from a Souls game to the point that when Godrick croaks his final rancid breath and his (presumably) four tongues comically lop out of his stupid mouth, I’m left with the deep satisfaction that comes with the end of a journey, rather than the beginning of one.

Microsoft urges UK regulator to reverse block of Activision Blizzard deal

9 months 2 weeks ago

Microsoft has submitted a material changes of circumstances document to the UK's regulator which stands opposed to its $68.7bn Activision Blizzard acquisition, urging it to drop its block of the deal.

The UK's Competition and Markets Authority previously ruled that the deal would not be allowed to go ahead back in April, citing concerns on Microsoft's current, and potentially future, dominance in cloud gaming.

Despite that setback, Microsoft has continued to sign deals with other companies and took on the US Federal Trade Commission in court (and won), leaving the UK's stance to the deal looking increasingly isolated. And it's these fresh commitments, Microsoft says, which should now be considered by the CMA. Had the CMA made its original decision with these in mind, Microsoft now says, the CMA would have ruled differently.

DF Weekly: PlayStation Project Q and PS5 Pro leaks raise more questions than answers

9 months 2 weeks ago

It's basically a clean sweep for Sony and PlayStation news, leaks and rumours in this week's DF Direct Weekly news stories. That kicks off by picking up a thread from last week about the 'Project Trinity' PS5 Pro leak that emerged, before moving onto the remarkable - and very real - price cuts we saw on the existing PlayStation 5 model. Meanwhile, compelling footage and photos of the Project Q handheld emerged, raising more questions than answers about the nature of the hardware.

I talked a little last week about the PS5 Pro specification as outed by journalist Tom Henderson. He's previously established trust in his sources by correctly predicting the Project Q handheld, but the jury's still out on his reports on the new PlayStation 5 model with a detachable/optional BD drive. The specs he offers for Trinity amount to 30 WGPs, 18000 MT/s memory, an '8K performance mode' and 'accelerated ray tracing'. The chip at the heart of the machine is codenamed Viola, a state of affairs corroborated by Kepler, who seems to have know about this - and other - AMD processors since at least March or April.

In the Direct, we talk about what a PS5 Pro could actually deliver that's worthwhile to the audience, having previously not seen the point in the machine. The leaked spec does suggest that a PS4 Pro-like device is viable: not quite the doubling of compute units we saw in the Pro, but there's the potential for much higher clock speeds to still deliver a notional 2x boost to performance. The faster memory would be in line with the kind of bandwidth increases we saw in the Pro, but really, it's what we don't know that is arguably more important.

PS5 Firmware Beta Increases M.2 SSD Memory Size Support to 8TB

PS5 Firmware Beta Increases M.2 SSD Memory Size Support to 8TB

Sony started sending out invites for a PS5 firmware beta that increases memory options by upping M.2 SSD support to 8TB. This is a "by invitation only" beta. As in the past, people in Canada, France, Germany, Japan, the UK, and the USA are eligible to be invited to test it out and will see email invitations today.

For those of us with access to the PS5 firmware beta, supported M.2 SSD could be used to expand the memory to 8TB. Prior to this test, people could only go up to 4TB. The requirements are the same as past ones. It can’t be a M.2 SATA SSD, it can’t have a built-in heatsink, and the whole SSD has to be formatted to use it. It needs to have 5,500MB/s read spead, Socket 3, and have a PCI-Express Gen4x4 interface. The only sizes supported are 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280, and 22110.

Here’s a list of other features in this PS5 firmware beta:

Bandai Namco Apologizes for Gundam: Witch from Mercury SuleMio Interview

9 months 2 weeks ago

sulemio gundam witch from mercury

Bandai Namco issued an apology in regards to an interview about Mobile Suit Gundam: The Witch From Mercury in the September 2023 issue of Monthly Gundam Ace regarding "SuleMio," the relationship between Suletta and Miorine. It apologized for "causing confusion" over a line in regards to the characters and their relationship.

Editor's Note: This article will touch on spoilers regarding Suletta, Miorine, and the SuleMio pairing in the ending of Gundam: The Witch From Mercury.

In the digital version of an interview with Kana Ichinose, the Japanese voice actress for Suletta in Gundam: The Witch From Mercury, she said that the scene of Miorine leaning her head against Suletta in the epilogue was really good. She also talked about how close the two of them became after three years and that she felt touched to see the “married couple” act in this way. Because of Ichinose’s status and the interview appearing in an official Gundam magazine, many viewed this as Sunrise's confirmation that SuleMio is canon.

Venba review: a brief, but touching cooking puzzler with a heap of heart

9 months 2 weeks ago

As a massive foodie with a near bottomless appetite, it pained me to watch Venba’s mouth-watering cooking puzzles knowing a similarly tasty-looking treat wasn’t waiting for me in real life. But as a second-generation immigrant, the game’s explorations of that experience hit so surprisingly close to home that I wasn’t left hungry by the time credits rolled. Venba is a touching, smart, and soulful game that made me want to hug everyone in my family immediately. Though, I do wish the game would’ve marinated in its good ideas a while longer.

Bandai Namco Warned About Unauthorized Tekken 8 Closed Network Test Access

9 months 2 weeks ago

Tekken 8 Closed Network Test Unauthorised Access

Bandai Namco issued a warning to players of the Tekken 8 Closed Network Test. According to the comoany, some players have been using exploits to play the Closed Network Test outside of its scheduled hours. It noted people who are doing so will be banned from official tournaments.

The Tekken 8 Closed Network Test gave select players access to the game for a limited time. PS5 players had two weekends in July 2023 to try the game out, while PC and Xbox players could only join them on the second weekend. The Closed Network Test is now over, but some players have gained access to the game after its closure date.

While Bandai Namco has been vague about the ways players have accessed Tekken 8 outside of its scheduled hours, the company has been clear about the consequences. As a violation of the Terms of Service and the Tekken World Tour Code of Conduct, players may be banned from participating in future official tournaments.

FFXIV cross-region data center

At the Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival 2023 held in Las Vegas, Director and Producer Naoki "Yoshi-P" Yoshida answered some questions asked by various media outlets and journalists. During the panel, he talked about cross-region data center travel in FFXIV, the logo for the new Dawntrail 7.0 expansion, and new Variant and Criterion Dungeon content. He also discussed the possibility of new large-scale content appearing in the game. [Thanks, Famitsu!]

When Yoshitaka Amano designs the logo for each FFXIV expansion, the artist draws the illustration in black and white so that it’s easier to import the data. He then applies the colors digitally. For the Dawntrail logo, the FFXIV development team told Amano it was going to be gold. Furthermore, Amano was asked to include a rainbow in the logo, despite the illustration being black and white.

Bandai Namco Warns Tekken 8 Fans Against Playing Cracked Closed Beta Build

9 months 2 weeks ago

Bandai Namco has issued a stark warning to Tekken 8 players, insisting they do not continue to play the recently-released closed network test.

The latest Tekken 8 closed network test ran on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, and PC over the weekend, and let players get hands-on with the upcoming fighting game ahead of launch.

Predictably, this closed network test was cracked, and it didn’t take long for users to continue to play the build beyond the closed network test period.

In a tweet, Bandai Namco said doing so breaches its terms of service, as well as the Tekken World Tour code of conduct. The unauthorized download or distribution of the game is “illegal”, Bandai Namco insisted, before threatening to ban anyone caught playing the CNT from its tournaments.

“Your cooperation in preserving the fairness and competitive integrity of our competition is highly valued,” Bandai Namco said.

Bandai Namco doesn’t want some players gaining an unfair advantage by playing Tekken 8's training mode indefinitely when others can’t or choose not to. A similar situation occurred ahead of the launch of Street Fighter 6, which saw some players continue to play a cracked version of an early beta after it officially ended.

9 months 2 weeks ago

It’s ‘90s week here at IGN and we are celebrating all the wonderful things that made this special decade one to remember. Movies and TV obviously had their standouts, but the ‘90s also saw the release of some of the most important video games and consoles of all time. However, which game was the best of the best? We can’t possibly hope to answer this question alone without your help.

Twitch Streamer Completes No-Hit Elden Ring Run Using an Electric Saxophone

9 months 2 weeks ago

Like other FromSoftware action RPGs, Elden Ring is notorious for its brutal difficulty, with a no-damage run that is not impossible but a challenging feat to accomplish. But one Twitch streamer managed to conquer this challenge with an unconventional controller: an electric saxophone.

Streamer DrDeComposing broadcasted himself taking less than 2.5 hours to beat Elden Ring without taking any damage. DrDeComposing touts himself as the first to complete a no-hit run of Elden Ring using a nontraditional controller, noting his previous personal best using the electric saxophone to play Elden Ring was no deaths and only one hit.

What's even more interesting is this is not DrDeComposing's first attempt at using an electric saxophone as a nontraditional controller to play video games — his entire Twitch channel is focused on him playing games using his digital wind instrument the Roland AE-10 aerophone.

How Dreamcast Killed Sega's Hardware Reign

9 months 2 weeks ago

It was September 10, 1999 – the day after the Sega Dreamcast’s US launch.

West Coast rapper Del the Funky Homosapien had just finished a gaming-tinged set at a San Francisco club ("Marvel Vs Capcom, beyond fathom // Tell the truth, Playstation ain't ready to have ‘em") and now Peter Moore, Sega of America’s senior vice president of marketing, stood on stage, ready to reveal the console’s day-one sales figures to the world.

He lifted paper flaps covering each digit, one by one. The crowd got louder as the millions stacked up. It roared as he flicked the last flap aside to show a total of nearly $98 million in sales. He declared it the “biggest launch in entertainment history” – and, crucially, bigger than the US launches of the PlayStation and the Nintendo 64.

It was, he tells IGN, a moment of “euphoria”.

Less than 18 months later, Moore, by that point Sega of America’s president, told an industry conference call that Sega was leaving the console business altogether. "It was tragic," he says.

An 18-year era of Sega hardware, which included four of the best gaming consoles of all time, was over.

It’s tempting to blame the swift demise of the much-loved Dreamcast on something easy and obvious, perhaps that EA refused to put its games on the console, or that the impending PlayStation 2 spooked prospective buyers. But from speaking to Moore and Simon Cox, the former editor-in-chief of Official Dreamcast Magazine, it’s clear the Dreamcast’s death was complicated, messy, and – arguably – inevitable, even as Moore stepped onto that San Francisco stage.

Welcome to 90s Week @ IGN

9 months 2 weeks ago

While the 1970s were important for the invention of video games and important modern blockbusters like Star Wars, and the 1980s were significant for establishing gaming as a worldwide phenomenon thanks to Nintendo, the 1990s were when things got really interesting across pop culture. Throughout the decade we saw the foundations laid for many of the conventions we take for granted today, and the building blocks of modern 3D gaming, blockbuster movies, and binge-worthy television were established and refined.

Over the next week, we’ll have stories and videos every day that explore all of this. Not only did we get the PlayStation, SNES, Super Mario 64, Resident Evil, Half-Life, Quake, and Pokémon in the 90s, but we also got The X-Files, the best seasons of The Simpsons, Friends, Buffy, and Twin Peaks. On top of that, some of the most significant movies of a generation hit in this decade, including The Matrix, Toy Story, Jurassic Park, Goodfellas, Pulp Fiction, Seven, and Terminator 2.

IGN itself didn’t launch until 1996, so we have some gaps in our coverage from the period that we intend to fill in this week.

There were some hugely significant advances in console hardware throughout the 90s, and we’ll be focusing on two in particular. Early in the week, we’ll be speaking with the team behind Sega’s beloved Dreamcast, which helped usher in the age of online-connected game consoles, and digging into how its short (but incredibly influential) life was ultimately responsible for ending Sega’s reign as a console superpower. Then, on Friday, we’ll be speaking with members of the original PlayStation team as they tell their behind-the-scenes stories about all the drama around the creation of Sony’s gaming business in the lead-up to the console’s Japanese release in 1994 and U.S. launch the following September.

Hitman: World of Assassination to Get First New Elusive Target in Two Years

9 months 2 weeks ago

IO Interactive has announced a brand new Elusive Target for Hitman: World of Assassination, due out later in 2023.

The Drop, Hitman: World of Assassination’s first new Elusive Target mission for two years, features the likeness and voiceover of real-life DJ and actor Dimitri Vegas, and launches free on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X and S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC.

Vegas plays the titular The Drop, “a DJ-turned-drug impresario bent on controlling the scene one way or another”. IO didn’t say where the mission is set, but a Berlin nightclub sounds plausible.

In Hitman: World of Assassination, Elusive Targets are unique, high-stakes contracts only available for a limited time. These missions are free for all players, allowing one chance to assassinate the target and if not successfully completed, the contract cannot be retried. Unique rewards attached to the The Drop Elusive Target mission will be revealed at a later date, IO said.

In January, IO rebranded Hitman 3 as Hitman: World of Assassination, with the entire trilogy's content streamlined and packaged into one game. World of Assassination became the only modern Hitman game available to buy, with Hitman 1 and 2 removed from storefronts.

Nintendo Reportedly Plans to Release Next-Gen Console During Second Half of 2024

9 months 2 weeks ago

Nintendo will release its next-gen console during the second half of 2024, according to a new report.

Sources told VGC development kits for the unannounced new console are now with partner studios, with a second half of 2024 release window set to give Nintendo enough time to ensure plenty of stock for launch.

Apparently this new next-gen console can be used in portable mode, like the Nintendo Switch, and has an LCD screen as opposed to an OLED screen in order to keep costs down. It also comes with a cartridge slot for physical games, VGC said.

However, the crucial question of backwards compatibility with Nintendo Switch games remains unclear. IGN has asked Nintendo for comment.

In May, Nintendo said it's the long-rumoured Switch successor wouldn't release until April 2024 at the earliest. Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa explained during an investors presentation that the company isn't considering new hardware in the 2023/24 financial year, which ends March 31, 2024.

This comes despite a decline in Switch sales. The console sold close to 18 million units in the last financial year, down from 23 million sold the year before and 28 million the year before that. Nintendo isn't looking to rush a new console out to tackle this decline though, as it has forecast another drop for the coming year.
