Fortnite V-Bucks UK price rise blamed on inflation

10 months 2 weeks ago

Fortnite is rising the price of its in-game V-Bucks currency in the UK, Canada and Mexico.

In a blog post on the changes, developer Epic Games blamed "economic factors like inflation and currency fluctuations". It last adjusted prices in other markets back in 2021.

1000 V-Bucks, which will buy you the game's seasonal battle pass, will now cost £6.99, up 50p from £6.49.

Game of the Week: First-person games are always a head trip

10 months 2 weeks ago

Hello! This week our Game of the Week is actually two games - apologies to any purists. This is partly because I simply cannot choose between Synapse, a VR shooter that Ian absolutely adored, and Sludge Life 2, the parkour and graffiti adventure that I have finished playing and am still thinking about.

But it's also partly because interesting things happen when you put these two games together. In terms of genre, they're very different, but in terms of preoccupations they both share quite a lot.

They're both games that really explore the first-person perspective. I know: this is a popular viewpoint for games, and has been for decades. But games like Synapse and Sludge Life 2 serve as reminders that it's still a very interesting viewpoint too. The fact that it's widely used hasn't really taken the strange magic away that much, and sometimes games come along that make that magic really visible.

Say Goodbye to the Iconic Gulf War Game Boy

10 months 2 weeks ago

Gulf War veterans have lost another comrade today, especially veterans who were gamers. The Nintendo Store in New York City has retired the iconic Game Boy that survived an explosion during the war.

Tanooki Joe, the Twitter user behind the account @VideoGameArt&Tidbits, which delivers high-resolution video game and retro gaming memorabilia, took to the social media platform and said the externally damaged Game Boy was officially retired from Nintendo NY after its exhibit was absent for some time. They said that during a recent visit to the store, an employee confirmed it was because it had been returned to Nintendo of America's headquarters in Washington State.

"The Gulf War Game Boy has officially been retired from @NintendoNYC," they said. "After not seeing it on display for a while, I asked one of the workers about it. He told me it was returned to Nintendo’s headquarters in Redmond, Washington."

Microsoft lawyer skips ahead to "Elder Scrolls 16" release, apparently coming in 2026

10 months 2 weeks ago

Microsoft's lawyer made a bit of a slip last night, casually stating that "The Elder Scrolls 16" will release in 2026. Needless to say, this is incorrect.

The court case between Microsoft and the FTC came to a close yesterday, after several days of testimonies, revelations and Sharpie-related blunders.

During the proceedings, Microsoft's lawyer took to the floor in a bid to clear up a bit of a misunderstanding surrounding Bethesda's Elder Scrolls series. However, in doing so, they perhaps made things a touch more confusing.

‘Frosty Blade’s Trial’ in Honkai: Star Rail Humbles Yanqing

10 months 2 weeks ago

honkai star rail frosty blade's trial yanqing companion mission

Version 1.1 of Honkai: Star Rail introduced the Companion Mission "Frosty Blade’s Trial," which shows what Yanqing is up to behind the scenes. He’s searching through the Xianzhou Luofu for the fugitive Blade. Through a jade tracer that you find on the ground, you can play as Yanqing in an instanced version of Luofu and learn some more about the going-ons of the ship.

Those who don’t have Yanqing can see what kind of person he is in his Companion Mission. He was pretty absent in the main story of Version 1.0, so some might not be familiar with his personality. As Jing Yuan’s protégé and a talented swordsman, he is very confident in his skills and hates people underestimating him for his age. He wants to be the Sword Champion, which is the title given to the best swordsman.

Review: Trails into Reverie Is a Complicated Culmination of the Series So Far

10 months 2 weeks ago

The Legend of Heroes: Trails Into Reverie Switch Review

With how massive The Legend of Heroes franchise is, Trails into Reverie has a daunting task of essentially being the climax of everything in the Crossbell and Erebonia arcs. Across three sub-series and nine mainline games, it is a quite a lot that this game has to accomplish, and it does so in a mostly nice manner on the Nintendo Switch version I played.

Unlike past games that focused on a singular protagonist, Trails into Reverie features three heroes at the crux of its story: Rean Schwarzer, Lloyd Bannings, and C. The former two have the opportunity to round out their storylines, while the mysterious C is a brand new protagonist. This system of switching between the three heroes and their perspectives is the core of this game’s features and plot.

[caption id="attachment_970905" align="aligncenter" width="1200"]The Legend of Heroes: Trails Into Reverie Switch Review Screenshot by Siliconera[/caption]

Often, you have the opportunity to pick which character you wish to follow, but this only lasts for a period of time. You’ll inevitably run into a cliffhanger in their story or a puzzle you can’t complete. This will then require you to check out another hero’s story to progress. This fascinating approach makes the scope of this game enormous, which is a positive and negative in the end.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails into Reverie Review

10 months 2 weeks ago

Ever wanted to experience the Marvel Cinematic Universe of RPGs? The Trails series is exactly that. More specifically, The Legend of Heroes: Trails into Reverie is the Avengers: Endgame of RPGs. It’s the culmination of three different subseries within Trails and two decades’ worth of meticulous storytelling, easily totaling over 100 hours of gameplay time between its story, combat, and post-game activities. Despite a bloated cast of characters resulting from combining the expansive Trails series, impeccable pacing makes every event and interaction manageable. With its politically engaging story and strategically fun turn-based gameplay, it's one of the best RPGs of 2023.

Reverie is able to pack so much content in because its overarching story is split into three routes, each with a different main character. By switching between perspectives, it’s able to keep its various plot twists and revelations fresh, and I never felt like I was lingering on one particular route too long before I had to make progress on another.

Fans of the Trails series will undoubtedly recognize the first protagonist, Rean Schwarzer. I’d gotten tired of playing as Rean as the main character of the four games in the Cold Steel saga – in particular, the story around him involving some worldwide catastrophe in Cold Steel IV was messy and convoluted. However, Reverie redeems Rean by giving him a much more focused storyline for his route, and I was impressed at how cleverly it expanded on his arc from Cold Steel IV.

Xbox Game Pass Not 'Value Destructive' Like PlayStation Claims, Football Manager Boss Says

10 months 2 weeks ago

The studio head of Football Manager developer Sports Interactive has said PlayStation's claim that Xbox Game Pass is "value destructive" is not true.

The United States' Federal Trade Commission spent the last week battling Microsoft in court over Xbox's acquisition of Activision Blizzard, during which PlayStation boss Jim Ryan said publishers do not like Game Pass.

Sports Interactive head Miles Jacobson refuted this to Eurogamer, however, saying Game Pass has been a positive experience for Football Manager.

"Different studios will have different data, because different games work well in different situations."

"Every studio is going to have different opinions on this," Jacobson said. "Different studios will have different data, because different games work well in different situations. For us, it's nothing but positive on all three platforms.

"The simple fact is Game Pass and Apple Arcade have brought new people to the franchise that never played it before. I'm confident enough in our games to believe we will now have those consumers for a long time, whatever platforms we're on. Fiscally, it makes sense. Creatively, it makes sense."

Ryan claimed he'd "talked to all the publishers, and they unanimously do not like Game Pass because it is value destructive", insisting Game Pass is losing Xbox a lot of money.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Standard Playthrough Takes 75 to 100 Hours, Larian Says

10 months 2 weeks ago

Wondering if you’ll be able to squeeze in a playthrough of Baldur’s Gate 3 before Starfield comes out? Be warned: one run takes on average 75 to 100 hours, developer Larian has said.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is a sprawling open-ended role-playing game from the makers of the Divinity: Original Sin series. Larian announced it had brought the PC version release date forward a month, from August 31 to August 3, in order to avoid a clash with the likes of Bethesda’s upcoming behemoth Starfield in early September. The PlayStation 5 version, meanwhile, is delayed slightly to September 6, and the Xbox Series X and S versions are without a release window (more on Baldur’s Gate 3’s Xbox hold-up here).

Speaking to IGN, Larian boss Swen Vincke said the developer is seeing a standard playthrough of Baldur’s Gate 3 take 75 to 100 hours. However, players who want to “do everything” should expect to double that figure.

“Between 75 and 100 hours, that's what we're seeing,” Vincke said. “That's not doing everything, that is just going to be a playthrough. There will be people who will be way over that, the ones who want to do everything. They will probably hit 200 hours, I think. On average we're seeing people who are going through take about 75 to 100 hours.”

The Legend of Heroes: Trails Into Reverie - a heartfelt conclusion that signals new beginnings

10 months 2 weeks ago

Returning to Crossbell and Erebonia left me surprisingly sentimental. Only three years have passed since my introduction to Nihon Falcom's RPG series, but Trails Into Reverie still feels pleasantly nostalgic, retreading familiar ground with a new high-stakes plot that provides critical reflection. After an incredibly long journey, Reverie calls time on Class VII and the Special Support Section's arcs while moving towards a new beginning.

Set five months after Cold Steel IV, a renewed struggle for Crossbell's independence kicks off this latest conflict with wide-reaching consequences. Split across three routes, you jump between the Crossbell police department's Special Support Section led by Lloyd Bannings, Class VII from Thors Military Academy, and the mysterious 'C.' Over-the-top action complements a compelling story even though Crossbell's plight feels overly drawn out. Still, some surprising twists redeem this.

Where Reverie shines is through its characters, and each route brings fresh perspectives to their actions. Rean, the man publicly revered as a war hero by Erebonia, finds his role scrutinised after being used as a nationalist icon. The SSS, long idealized as "heroes" by the Crossbell public, suddenly face the reality that such expectations have placed upon them. C's route is hard to discuss without spoilers, but I enjoyed this redemptive tale. Two wars and imperial occupation have left some deep scars, leading to an intriguing re-examination of prior events.

Toby Fox Offered Deltarune Chapter 3 Update

Toby Fox Offered Deltarune Chapter 3 Update

An Undertale/Deltarune newsletter went out on June 29, 2023, and as usual Toby Fox used it to offer updates on both games. In particular, there are hints as to how Deltarune Chapter 3 and 4 are going. There are no release dates yet. Fox noted that once the final overworld they are working on now for this part is finished, ”the chapter will finally be playable all the way through.”

Here is Fox’s full update on Deltarune Chapter 3 from the newsletter.

As was the case last time, we're focusing on Chapter 3. However, there are a few people working on pieces of later chapters, such as bullet patterns or puzzles.

As for Chapter 3, we're finally creating the final overworld area. You could think of it like the "Queen's Castle" or "Card Castle", but for this chapter. With this complete, the chapter will finally be playable all the way through...! (Fun Fact: I composed the song for this area in 2016...)

This Chapter is made of many different pieces... so it's been hard to understand exactly how everything was turning out. Now that things are clearer, I just need to roll over the entire game with a steamroller and crush out all the bumps. There may be things to add, things to fix, or things to remove… but, many pieces have been quite polished already, so it won't be too bad.

Undertale Deleted Scene of Sans Eating Ice Cream Shared

In the Summer 2023 Undertale/Deltarune email newsletter, Toby Fox shared details about a cut scene featuring Sans eating ice cream. Fox first explained that there were sprites from it in the game, which people may have discovered, but never ended up used. These would have been part of a segment for speedrunners, but that didn't happen. However, there's now a video mock-up showing what that event would have looked like, complete with special music.

Here is the segment showing Sans eating ice cream in Undertale. While it would have appeared at the end of the game, there are no spoilers present. It does offer a nod to the fact that whoever playing the game ended up getting through the story much faster than expected.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=phOsFLw4L88&ab_channel=UNDERTALEOfficial

This isn’t the only detail about a game that came up in the Summer 2023 email newsletter. Fox also offered an update on Deltarune’s progress. Apparently, they are now working an overworld area for the third chapter of the game. There's still no release window for the next part of that game yet, however.

Undertale is available on the PS4, Vita, Switch, Xbox One, and PC. Sans and Papyrus Nendoroids are also now available.

Shout out to Game Gengo, my new language learning obsession

10 months 2 weeks ago

As some of you might be aware, I went to Japan earlier this year and had a great time. Off the back of the trip, I've finally decided to get my act together and pursue a long, arduous road to some degree of fluency. It's always going to be a work-in-progress, but I think I've settled into a language learning routine which leaves me with plenty of time for Love Island in the evening. DuoLingo's owl has been punted to the curb, too, because the bird is awful.

Naturally, I've turned to a textbook: Genki I. At first I thought there was no getting past it being a bit dry - I mean they aren't meant to be thrillers, are they? Until, that was, I discovered Game Gengo, a YouTuber who takes each lesson from the textbook, breaks them down into manageable chunks, all complete with loads of examples from video games. I spend most of my evenings with the guy, and what a treat it is.

PowerWash Sim's SpongeBob DLC confirms it as the king of crossovers

10 months 2 weeks ago

I only had four TV channels growing up, and thus do not knowing anything about Bob L'éponge other than what is required to understand Tumblr posts (and that he lives in a tropical fruit). What I can tell you is that the SpongeBob Squarepants DLC for PowerWash Simulator confirms that PowerWash DLC is now the only way I will consume content about pop culture I do not understand. The most elaborate Spiderverse-themed skins for Fortnite, with all the custom dances they can muster, are as shadows and dust next to methodically cleaning an orange submarine car while a fictional octopus sends you sad texts. I'm convinced PowerWash Sim could do a crossover with literally any intellectual property and make it work. Lego. Mad Men. The filmography of Nicolas Cage. Clean them all.

Scorn Invites PlayStation 5 Players To Its Unsettling World This Fall

Scorn PlayStation 5

Scorn was one of the most enigmatic and polarizing games when it crept to Xbox and PC last fall. Some love it, some despise it, and PlayStation fans will get to see which side of the fence they fall on when it hits PlayStation 5 this fall.

Despite appearing like a shooter on its surface, Scorn is an atmospheric puzzle-focused experience. As a strange humanoid creature, you’ll explore a labyrinthian H.R. Giger-inspired alien world to unravel its mysteries. While combat is present, it’s very much secondary to deciphering the abstract story and riddles, and even those revelations will primarily be up to your interpretation

The PlayStation 5 version features DualSense haptic feedback support and 4K/60 fps gameplay. Check out the game’s new trailer below.

One Piece SH Figuarts Figures Based on Live-Action Show Coming

Bandai's Tamashii Nations confirmed that there will be new One Piece SH Figuarts figures based on the Netflix live-action show. The announcement didn't include a look at any prototypes or announce any characters that will appear. However, it did reveal that people will get to see the in-development figures at Anime Expo 2023.

Here's the announcement. It only shared the logo for the live-action adaptation of the series. Given that the Straw Hat Pirates in this first season include Luffy, Nami, Sanji, Usopp, and Zoro, it could be possible that one or all of them could appear in the line up. This would likely mean One Piece SH Figuarts figures that will bear a resemblance to Inaki Godoy, Emily Rudd, Taz Skylar, Jacob Romero Gibson, and Mackenyu.

Square Enix Talked About Marlene and Aerith’s Vision in FFVII Remake

10 months 2 weeks ago

FFVII Remake Marlene Aerith vision

Square Enix offered new details about the vision that Marlene and Aerith shared the first time they meet in FFVII Remake. The official Twitter account for the game offered more details, and shared the Japanese transcript of the conversation between the two characters and the next discussion between Aerith and Tseng.

The first encounter between Aerith and Marlene happens during chapter 12 of FFVII Remake, titled “Fight for Survival.” In it, both characters meet at the Seventh Heaven bar, where Marlene is hiding during a Shinra assault at the sector's plate. During this scene, Aerith introduces herself to the girl and manages to calm her, after which Marlene reacts as if she had seen something. This event goes unexplained for the rest of the game.

However, the FFVII Remake development team recently gave more details about the exchange. Apparently, depending on each person's sensitivity, when someone comes into contact with Aerith they may see a vision or illusion that transcends time and space. During their first encounter in FFVII Remake, Marlene saw some sort of vision that she should not have seen when interacting with Aerith. However, the development team decided to leave what she saw up to each person’s interpretation.

Psychonauts 3 Isn't Coming Anytime Soon

10 months 2 weeks ago

Fans hoping for a Psychonauts 3 reveal shouldn't get their hopes up as franchise creator and Double Fine Productions founder Tim Schafer has said it's not being worked on at the moment.

Schafer told Cressup on YouTube that Double Fine is currently in a "closed doors" stage and isn't ready to talk about what it's working on, but he personally isn't working on a sequel to 2021's Psychonauts 2.

"I’m not working on Psychonauts 3," he said plainly. "We’re kind of at the ‘Willy Wonka, closed doors’ phase. But soon we could open and cause a lot of harm to a lot of children, just like Willy Wonka."

This comes despite what many thought was an obvious Psychonauts 3 tease ahead of the 2023 Xbox Games Showcase, though Schafer insisted he didn't see it.

A Microsoft Twitter account shared a tic-tac-toe board that spelled out "psycho" outside of three crosses. Many put this together to tease Psychonauts 3, but the Xbox Games Showcase came and went with no reveal.

In our 8/10 review of the second game, IGN said: "Even with a few rough edges, Psychonauts 2 is just about everything I could have hoped for from this long-awaited sequel."

As reported by The Gamer, the one-of-a-kind One Ring card avoided the grasp of sticky-fingered children and was instead found by someone who was aware of its value and immediately submitted the card for authentication with the leading card grading firm, the PSA.

Trading card buying and collecting company Dave and Adam's Card World upped its initial $1 million bounty of the card and is now willing to pay $2 million for it, though the transaction has not yet happened as the card has only just emerged. The owner of the card wants to remain anonymous, according to the PSA.

I Don't Want Tears of the Kingdom to End

10 months 2 weeks ago

I haven't beaten Tears of the Kingdom yet. I also don't think I want to. I don't have anywhere near as much time in it as I should, between work commitments and a short family trip, but I'm over 60 hours now and I feel like I should be nearing a place in my heart where I want to see things wrap up. But I don't even have the slightest twinge. Finishing Tears of the Kingdom's story feels completely against the way I've chosen to enjoy its beautiful and gigantic world. It's the first game since Red Dead Redemption 2 to make me feel like I never want it to end, and only the third game I've deliberately avoided finishing in spite of absolutely loving it.

The other two are the aforementioned Red Dead 2, and before that, Metal Gear Solid V. They all have something in common: all three of them completely overtook all my free time at the expense of all other games. In the case of Tears of the Kingdom, in spite of my relatively limited play time, I've gotten less sleep, completed fewer of my weekly tasks, and basically fallen behind in life just a little bit. And I'm OK with that! Sinks were made to have dishes piled up in them. I believe it's in the original patent. Maybe I should look that up.
