10 months 2 weeks ago

Thirsty Suitors Release Date New Gameplay Trailer

Thirsty Suitors will be released on PlayStation, Xbox (including Xbox Game Pass), Switch, and PC on November 2, it's been revealed.

This news comes by way of today's Annapurna Interactive Showcase, where developer Outerloop Games released a new trailer showing off more of what to expect in this RPG that's one part a skateboarding game, another part a cooking game, and always a game about confronting your exes and parents. It looks great – we quite enjoyed playing it recently during Summer Game Fest 2023 – and you can check it out for yourself below in the newest Thirsty Suitors trailer:

As you can see, players take on the role of protagonist Jala, who, after a bad breakup, returns to her hometown. There, she must confront her exes and try to reconcile with them, please her tough-to-please parents, and mend broken friendships in time for her sister's wedding. To do all that, Jala will skateboard, take part in turn-based combat seemingly inspired by Persona and Pokémon, cook meals with her parents, and more.

Thirsty Suitors hits PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, and PC via Steam on November 2.

Cocoon Gets a September 2023 Release Date and a New Gameplay Trailer

10 months 2 weeks ago

Cocoon, the much-anticipated world jumping game from Geometric Interactive and the lead gameplay designer of Limbo and Inside, will officially be released on Xbox Series X/S (Game Pass!), Xbox One, PS5, PS4, Switch, and PC via Steam on September 29, 2023.

Cocoon's release date was revealed alongside a brand-new gameplay trailer at the Annapurna Interactive Showcase and we got another glimpse of the puzzler that allows you to not only jump in and out of worlds, but to actually use those worlds to solve puzzles.

Each world becomes an orb when you jump out of it, and you can carry it with you to solve puzzles and even unlock its unique ability to help you finish your quest and power you up. You can also use the world jumping mechanic to escape danger, as we've seen the player character jump out of the world to avoid a deadly moving obstacle and then jump back in when it had passed their previous position.

Cocoon has more than just puzzles, as there are also big boss battles and combat encounters that will have you thinking on your toes and using the abilities you've previously unlocked from the worlds you've previously explored.

In our hands-on preview with Cocoon, we said, "Every time I thought I knew the game was going to zig, it zagged into places I would have never dreamed of. This is a beautiful game - not just in its art and music but in how it asks you to let go of expectation and revel in the sense of discovery. I’m excited to discover what comes next - and all the orbs I’ll be pondering in the future."

Xbox’s Contingency Plan: What if Microsoft Loses its FTC Case?

10 months 2 weeks ago

I try to be an optimist in life, and that includes my career and the coverage I lead at IGN. I’d rather celebrate great games than tear down flawed ones. I’d rather look ahead to the games I’m most excited about than lament the ones that aren’t being made yet. And in the case of Microsoft’s in-progress case against the United States Federal Trade Commission (FTC), I’d rather look ahead to what it would look like for Team Xbox to win the case rather than lose it.

However, given that a loss is well within the realm of possibility (you might laugh at that if you’ve been following the case closely, given the forest’s worth of wrong trees the FTC’s lawyers have been trying to bark up with Xbox executives on the stand, but stranger things have happened), I think it’s important to take a look at what Microsoft’s contingency plan might look like if the US government is able to successfully block Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision-Blizzard-King (ABK). Obviously, the following is all speculation, but let’s take a look at what Microsoft might do if this case doesn’t go its way.

Pokemon Go Developer Niantic Shuttering LA Studio, Canceling Marvel: World of Heroes

10 months 2 weeks ago

Pokémon Go developer Niantic is closing its LA studio, resulting in hundreds of job losses.

The AR games developer has confirmed that 230 employees will lose their jobs as the company shutters its Los Angeles studio.

“I have made the decision to narrow our focus for mobile game investments,” said Niantic CEO John Hanke in an email to employees. “Specifically, this means we will be closing our LA studio, reducing our game platform team, and making additional reductions across the company… This means we are laying off around 230 Niantics.”

When it comes to Niantic’s games, there are some further casualties. NBA All-World will close, and Niantic is ceasing production of Marvel: World of Heroes as it seeks to consolidate its portfolio and continue to support Pokemon Go.

'Pokémon Go is the top priority'

Niantic hit mainstream success with the release of Pokémon Go – its AR-driven Pokémon game that essentially brings Pokémon training into the real world via your mobile phone.

The concept lined up perfectly with The Pokémon Company’s flagship game series, and the mobile game went on to huge success. However, it looks as though that success won’t be repeated for the long-awaited Marvel game.

Blade Runner 2033 and everything else from Annapurna's latest showcase

10 months 2 weeks ago

Just when it looked like we might be done with the showcases for the summer, here comes another one, this time from the ever-reliable Annapurna Interactive. And it was a typically strong showing for the publisher, offering a fresh look at some already announced titles - including the new one from Sayonara Wild Hearts' studio Simogo and the fascinating Cocoon - as well as some big reveals. From stunning photographic adventures to an honest-to-goodness new Blade Runner game, there's a lot to look forward to in the months and year ahead, and a full round-up of the showcase can be found below.

Lorelei and the Laser Eyes

Sayonara Wild Hearts developer Simogo's latest is a baroque blend of surreal mystery thriller and puzzle adenture, faintly bringing to mind the studio's iOS classic Device 6. It focuses on a woman's search for answers, deep in a strange manor house, as players attempt to solve the enigma at its heart. There's no release date yet, but we do it's coming to Switch and Steam - and while we await further details, there's a tantilising new trailer above.

Sword Art Online: Last Recollection Trailer Focuses on Game Characters

10 months 2 weeks ago

sword art online last recollection game-original characters trailer

A new trailer for Sword Art Online: Last Recollection shows all of the game-original characters from the past who will show up in this entry. These characters are not from the light novel or the anime. Instead, they were exclusive to various Sword Art Online console titles. However, they’ll reappear once again as playable characters in Last Recollection.

In the trailer, all of the characters show up with a voice line. You can also see a little bit of them in action behind them. All of the voice actors will reprise their roles for Sword Art Online: Last  Recollection. The characters in this trailer are:

  • Itsuki
  • Kureha
  • Medina
  • Philia
  • Premiere
  • Rain
  • Seven
  • Strea
  • Tia
  • Zeliska

You can watch the trailer for the game-original characters in Sword Art Online: Last Recollection here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=43rvazYGNak

The very Sword Art Online video game, Infinity Moment, came out in 2013. Since then, there have been five more games in the series. Most of these characters have only appeared in their respective games until Last Recollection assembled them all together. It’s unclear if they’ll play in the exact same way as they did in their original games, or if Last Recollection will switch things up.

Fate/strange Fake Teaser Shows Caster and His Master

10 months 2 weeks ago

fate/strange fake caster

The third teaser trailer for Fate/strange Fake -Whispers of Dawn- focuses on Caster and his Master. Francesca Prelati also makes an appearance, though the teaser does not go into detail as to what kind of role she’ll have in the Snowfield Holy Grail Wars. Like the other trailers, you can watch it on Aniplex’s YouTube account.

While Caster’s Master, Orlando Reeve, has a very serious personality, his Servant, Caster, is a lot more boisterous. Similar to Shakespeare, who was a Caster in the Fate/Apocrypha Grail War, he’s more interested in observing the fates of those participating in the War rather than participating himself. Francesca only has a very short appearance in the trailer. So those who are unfamiliar with the source material may be unclear of her plot significance from watching it.

You can watch the Caster teaser for Fate/strange Fake -Whispers of Dawn- here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bpFtWCQrLuk

Wataru Hatano will voice Orlando, and Showtaro Morikubo will voice Caster. Hatano has previously appeared as Gaku in IDOLiSH7 and Gajeel in Fairy Tail. Morikubo’s past roles include Shikamaru in Naruto and Yosuke in Persona 4. As for Francesca, Maaya Uchida will voice her. Uchida also voices Hiyori in Noragami and Angel Devil in Chainsaw Man.

Don't worry, cute co-op adventure Flock is "totally playable as a single-player game"

During tonight's Annapurna Interactive Showcase, we got another lovely look at Flock, the latest game from Wilmot's Warehouse and I Am Dead devs Hollow Ponds and Richard Hogg. In it, we get to see exactly how its adorable creature herding works in co-op, which you'd probably hope to see, given its own Steam page also describes it as a co-op multiplayer game. But rest assured, Flock is still very much a game you can play on your own, without the need to have a pal along for the ride, the devs tell me.

Wake up! There's a new Blade Runner game coming from Annapurna Interactive

10 months 2 weeks ago

Annapurna Interactive have announced their first internally developed game at their publishing showcase this evening, and it's an all-new Blade Runner game. Exciting! It's called Blade Runner 2033: Labyrinth, and it's set "squarely between" the original Blade Runner film and its more recent sequel, Blade Runner 2049, say Annapurna. The reveal trailer doesn't give too much away at this stage, but I'm getting very big Her Story and Immortality vibes from it. Come and have a gander below.

Everything announced at the Annapurna Interactive Showcase 2023

10 months 2 weeks ago

Tonight's Annapurna Interactive Showcase brought us 30 minutes of fresh game announcements, putting a lovely (and hopefully final) full stop on this year's notE3 / Summer Game Fest period. While most of the announcements were updates on games we already knew about, there are a couple of cool new things in there that I'm personally quite pumped for, including a new Blade Runner game being developed internally at Annapurna Interactive, a new Keita Takahashi joint about a kid stuck in a T-pose of all things, and a new ghostly biking game from the team behind Nidhogg. I'd highly recommend watching the showcase in full if you can, but in case you need a quick refresher of what happened, or are just short on time, we've rounded up every announcement in order below.

Annapurna Interactive Showcase 2023: Everything Announced Including Blade Runner 2033: Labyrinth

10 months 2 weeks ago

The Annapurna Interactive Showcase has returned for 2023 and it was filled with a wide range of unique and wonderful-looking games. From the first Blade Runner game in 25 years that also happens to be the first in-house game for Annapurna Interactive to release dates for Thirsty Suitors and Cocoon to the news that Stray was headed to Xbox, the 30-minute show was not a disappointment.

However, it did go by pretty quickly and it can be hard to keep track of everything announced, so this article will gather all the biggest reveals and the trailers that went along with them so you don't miss a thing!

Blade Runner 2033: Labyrinth Is Annapurna Interactive's First In-House Game

Blade Runner 2033: Labyrinth is not only the first Blade Runner game in 25 years, but it will also be Annapurna Interactive's first in-house game. We don't know too much about the game quite yet, but it was confirmed that it will take place in 2033 in a dystopian Los Angeles after the Blackout and will fit in between the original Blade Runner and Blade Runner 2049.

Its development is being led by Solar Ash and What Remains of Edith Finch's Chelsea Hash, and we had the chance to speak to her about the project that will supposedly have a strong focus on narrative.

The FTC Trial Unmasks Xbox’s Ambitions

10 months 2 weeks ago

Microsoft has had a tightly crafted image for the past few decades, with Xbox executives presenting as jovial, calm, and unpressed about the console wars. But that mask has slipped in the trial between the U.S. Federal Trade Commission and Microsoft as we’ve gotten an inside look at how executives are thinking about strategically using the media, news announcements, and even how to market their cloud gaming products effectively to get the gamers excited.

A different side of the brand has been shown through evidence uploaded this week. Microsoft Gaming CEO Phil Spencer has called the console wars a “social construct within the community,” acknowledging that in reality, Xbox is solidly behind PlayStation and Nintendo and has “remained in third place for quite a while.” In emails, Matt Booty showed that Xbox is, in fact, hungry and competitive internally. He wrote in 2019 that Microsoft could “spend Sony out of business.”

For a company that is ordinarily extremely buttoned up in an industry that’s full of secrets, the trial has been a rare window of transparency.

I’ve been interviewing Microsoft and Xbox executives since 2019 and keeping careful notes on how the company has marketed its new console, cloud gaming service, and position against Sony. I found that some of the insights that came out of the trial testimony and documents demonstrate what Microsoft was really thinking internally and contrast directly with their external marketing. At times, Microsoft confidently showed off new products, while internally admitting to bigger worries, all of which highlight the ways the games industry relies on a culture of secrecy, and why this trial is such an important moment to understanding this industry.

Thirsty Suitors Gets a November 2023 Release Date

10 months 2 weeks ago

Thirsty Suitors is a very unique game that features turn-based combat against your exes, skateboarding, cooking, and so much more, and it will be released on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X/S (Game Pass!), Xbox One, PC, and Switch on November 2, 2023.

Thirsty Suitors was featured at the Annapurna Interactive Showcase and we also got a new trailer that shows off some of the adventures ahead for Jala, who must learn to "handle her demanding parents, reconcile with her exes, and mend broken friendships in time for her sister's wedding."

As if that wasn't enough packed into a game, Thirsty Suitors is also a stylish celebration of South Asian culture that takes great inspiration from the developers' lived experiences.

Each of Thirsty Suitors' gameplay sections look to have depth to them, with the combat featuring upgrades, special abilities, and even a mood system that looks to let you strike at your foe's vulnerabilities. Similarly, skating has a ton of tricks, combos, and challenges to complete and cooking will see Jala repairing her relationship with her mom and cooking South Asian-inspired dishes.

Stray Is Finally Coming to Xbox in August 2023

10 months 2 weeks ago

Cat lovers, rejoice! Stray will finally be making its way to Xbox Series X/S and Xbox One on August 10, 2023.

Stray was first released on PS5, PS4, and PC on July 19, 2022, and it follows a stray cat in a cybercity of the future. While the world itself may be futuristic and fantastical, you are just an ordinary, yet awesome and smart cat.

To get an idea of what that means, be sure to check out our list of the 10 totally normal "cat things" you can do in Stray, including knocking things over, clawing up carpets and walls, typing gibberish on a keyboard, and more.

In our Stray review, we said, "The new ideas it introduces along the way help keep things as fresh as a new bag of litter, too, even if not all of those ideas work quite as well as others. But whether I was scratching at a carpet or curling up into a ball and taking a catnap, Stray does a great job of setting itself apart in a way that feels like more than just a novelty."

While they may not be available on Xbox, those who already own Stray on PC (or wish to!) should really know about the hilarious mods created for the game, including one that replaces your cat's meowing with Heavy Rain's iconic "JASON!" shout. There are also mods that turn your cat into Garfield or Spyro the Dragon.

To a T Is a New Game From the Creator of Katamari Damacy That Stars a Character Stuck in a T-Pose

10 months 2 weeks ago

To a T is a new episodic 3D adventure from Katamari Damacy creator Keita Takahashi and Uvula that stars a teenager stuck in a t-pose.

To a T, which has no release date or window as of yet, was featured in the Annapurna Interactive Showcase and the trailer was a hilarious look at the world that promises to have a "strong focus on character, interaction, story, and exploration."

The teen you play as only wishes to live a normal life, and you will join them on their journey to realize that their "unique posture" has much more than meets the eye and that they are "the perfect shape."

Alongside going to school, exploring your small coastal town, dealing with bullies, and adventuring with your mom and adorable dog, you will also learn about a "new ability granted to them by their extraordinary posture" and "uncover more about their mysterious lineage." We get a glimpse of this ability that sees them spinning very fast and flying away.

For those unfamiliar, a t-pose is a default pose for animated characters before they are animated to do what the creator wants that sees their arms outstretched horizontally, effectively making the character look like the letter T.

To a T was first announced at last year's Annapurna Interactive, but it was done so without a title reveal or the confirmation the main character would be stuck in a t-pose.

Master Detective Archives: RAIN CODE - A murder mystery in need of conviction

10 months 2 weeks ago

The Danganronpa franchise, spearheaded by creator Kazutaka Kodaka, has endured an afterlife far beyond its humble origins as a PSP murder investigation and school life simulator run by a maniacal two-tone bear. It shows what good writing and character design can get you. Characters like Junko Enoshima are perhaps more recognisable today for their place in TikTok cosplay circles and Tumblr discussions than for the games they came from.

The power of online fandom is intertwined with Danganronpa’s legacy, where even minor characters are beloved and memorable because of how clearly-defined their personalities and motives are from visuals alone. As a result, a dedicated fan base latched onto the game’s unique psycho-philosophical clash of hope and despair. Even now he’s left the series behind to found Too Kyo games with his good friend, and fellow cult creator, Kotaro Uchikoshi, experiences like Death Come True and World’s End Club, while of mixed quality, retain Kodaka signature violent rumination on justice.

Still, as those are smaller experiences, it’s hard not to view Master Detective Archives: Rain Code as the return of Kodaka, his first major release since the end of the Danganronpa trilogy in 2017. Rather than throwing a bunch of unhinged schoolkids into a tightly-controlled environment where their only means of escape is the successful murder of their friends, we're in for a fantasy-mystery adventure. This is a game that blends Ace Attorney’s investigative intrigue with Persona-esque Mystery Labyrinths, all channeled through the stylistic filter of the creator’s iconic hit franchise.

Original The Settlers creator's Pioneers of Pagonia gets first in-game trailer

10 months 2 weeks ago

When we were first introduced to Pioneers of Pagonia, a new city builder from original The Settlers designer Volker Wertich, earlier this year, there wasn't much to go on beyond a brief description and a teaser video. Now, though, with its early access release steadily drawing nearer, we've been given a first proper look at the thing via a new in-game trailer.

Pioneers of Pagonia, to get the fundamentals out the way, sets players loose on the titular (and procedurally generated) islands of Pagonia with the goal of establishing a presence through production, economic expansion, and exploration, making use of the resources they uncover - and the alliances they forge with Pagonia's not always friendly inhabitants - along the way.

40 different building types have also been promised for Pioneers of Pagonia's Steam early access launch, along with more than 70 different goods and dispersed production chains. A co-op mode is also planned, meaning you'll be able to be a ruinous blight on the land (or otherwise, I suppose) with a friend in tow.

RoboCop: Rogue City is having a closed playtest next week

10 months 2 weeks ago

As we clomp stompily toward RoboCop: Rogue City's September release, like some, oh, I don't know, machine-augmented crime fighter, developer Teyon and publisher Nacon have announced a closed playtest is happening next week.

RoboCop: Rogue City - which is build around an "original story" set between RoboCop 2 and 3 - looks to land somewhere between a first-person shooter and cybernetically enhanced detective adventure, whisking players to the rain-slicked streets of Old Detroit to solve crimes, slay baddies, and perhaps even turn a few wrong 'uns into goo.

"Explore open areas and complete your objectives according to your own sense of justice," explains Teyon. "Finding evidence, interrogation and maintaining public order are just some of your daily tasks as a police officer. But don't take decisions lightly: your choices can determine the fate of citizens and the result of your mission."

After that, we see her talking to Dias and convincing him to join the party and fight alongside her. From there, we get to see her in battle. New Spice and Wolf 2024 Trailer Shows Lawrence Meeting Holo

10 months 2 weeks ago

spice and wolf 2024

Dengeki Bunko uploaded a new key visual and trailer for the 2024 version of Spice and Wolf. It is not a sequel to the original anime. Rather, it will adapt the story from the beginning again. The full title of the 2024 version is Spice and Wolf: Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf.

The new key visual has us looking up at Lawrence and Holo from a pile of apples. The title of the show is at the bottom. It’s unclear at this point what major differences there will be between the 2024 version and the original adaptation. However, since the anime only covered a small portion of the light novel, this series might cover events from later volumes.

You can watch the first trailer for Spice and Wolf: Merchant Meets the Wise Wolf here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DuWQOwwI9z4

Jun Fukuyama and Ami Koshimizu will reprise their roles as Lawrence and Holo respectively. Other roles Fukuyama has portrayed include Joker from Persona 5 and Lelouch from Code Geass. As for Koshimizu, she has previously played Kallen in Code Geass and Yukiko from Persona 4.

Annapurna Interactive Is Developing a Blade Runner Game

10 months 2 weeks ago

During today's Annapurna Interactive showcase, the publisher announced that it's no longer just a publisher. It's developing its first in-house game, based on the Blade Runner franchise, entitled Blade Runner 2033: Labyrinth.

Though we saw a brief teaser trailer today, we don't have too many specific details about what Blade Runner 2033 will entail. We know it takes place in (surprise!) 2033 in a dystopian LA after the Blackout, wedged firmly between the original Blade Runner and the sequel, Blade Runner 2049. We don't know any details about genre or gameplay, but it will supposedly have a strong focus on narrative. And development is being led by Chelsea Hash, who formerly worked on both Solar Ash and What Remains of Edith Finch.

Speaking to Hash ahead of the news, she tells me that it was Annapurna that approched Alcon to get the rights for Blade Runner, saying that the team has a "deep love" for the franchise.

"When I found out about the opportunity to lead a Blade Runner game, it fully knocked me off my proverbial flight plan," Hash says. "I had my hands full working on two projects, and was putting together designs for a new pitch - but I couldn’t pass up this chance. I’ve been watching the original film yearly since I was probably too young, and I remember sneaking away to watch 2049 in the midst of shipping a big project."

Baldur's Gate 3 dev says Xbox version still coming but "compromises" may have to be made

10 months 2 weeks ago

Larian Studios has once again addressed the Xbox version of its upcoming RPG Baldur's Gate 3, confirming that while it's still in the work, the developer may ultimately be forced to make "compromises" in order to release on the platform.

Larian's struggles with Baldur's Gate 3 on Xbox first surfaced in February, when - amid fan fears the game was a PlayStation console exclusive - the studio confirmed it was working on an Xbox version but that it had "run into some technical issues - particularly with split-screen co-op."

In a statement provided to Digital Foundry shortly after, Larian explained its decision not to formally announced an Xbox release was more specifically down to issues it was having getting "split-screen co-op to work to the same standard on both Xbox Series X and S". And now, in an interview with IGN, studio founder and creative director Swen Vincke has shared more.

Wild Card Football Announced as Arcade Madden Alternative With Colin Kaepernick on the Cover

10 months 2 weeks ago

Saber Interactive is working on a football-themed take on its popular NBA Playground series, with former NFL player and social activist Colin Kaepernick taking center stage on the game's cover.

Like NBA Playgrounds, Wild Card Football will include hundreds of real-life football players, including T.J. Watt, Jalen Hurts, Amon-Ra St. Brown, and more. But while it features real NFL players, it's not an NFL game, meaning you won't be able to play as the Kansas City Chiefs or the Minnesota Vikings.

Instead, you can create your own customized seven-on-seven team with players "reimagined Playgrounds-style." The gameplay is reminiscent of arcade classics like NFL Blitz, with special Wild Cards granting powers like super strength and invisibility. It will include season play, local multiplayer, and online multiplayer with full crossplay.

'It shifts the power dynamic'

Kaepernick, though, is one of the game's surprise inclusions. While he appeared in recent versions of Madden NFL, Kaepernick hasn't played in the NFL since 2016. He made waves when he protested the fatal police shootings of Philando Castile, Freddie Gray, and other Black people and people of color by taking a knee during the playing of the Star-Spangled Banner. He was released by the San Francisco 49ers in the offseason and has not played since, leading to the widespread belief that he had been blacklisted by the league.

For me it shifts the power dynamic of how you look at the teams, how you look at football

Today, Kaepernick is a social activist working on legal defense initiatives, COVID-19 relief funds, and other projects. NFL commission Roger Goodell also apologized for the league's actions in 2020, saying "we wished we had listened earlier...to what you were kneeling about and what you were trying to bring attention to."

Review: The Makers Of Danganronpa Are Back With Another Mystery Banger

10 months 2 weeks ago

I would rather not liken Master Detective Archives: Rain Code to the games its creative team is best known for, but I can’t help it when Spike Chunsoft and Too Kyo Games’ latest murder mystery sure does invite the comparison. Like Danganronpa before it, Rain Code is a murder mystery from the mind of Kazutaka Kodaka,…

Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective review: a glorious remaster that's still to die for

10 months 2 weeks ago

Over a decade on from its Nintendo DS release, there's still nothing quite like Ghost Trick. In this smart murder mystery detective game from the creator of Ace Attorney, you play the recently deceased amnesiac Sissel as he attempts to piece together his own demise. Who killed him? And why? And what's the deal with these newfound powers he has to turn back time and manipulate inanimate objects in his vicinity? That definitely wasn't in the ghostbusting 101 manual. Alas, he doesn't have long to find out, as he'll cross over to the afterlife in the morning. Thus begins a frantic night of whodunnit puzzling at its finest, with director Shu Takumi showing us exactly what he's made of outside the courtroom dramas he built his name on.
