What's better: Tagging locations for teamies, or door violence?

10 months 3 weeks ago

Last time, you decided that snap-to construction is better than fighting a little beastie then meeting the giant adults. I can respect that. It's practical. It's not bullying. Maybe you don't enjoy getting your comeuppance. But the alternative is still pretty funny. Onwards! This week, I ask you to pick between helping people find things in an environment and using part of the environment as a weapon. What's better: Tagging locations for teamies, or door violence?

Another successful Green Game Jam raises hundreds of thousands for eco causes

10 months 3 weeks ago

UPDATE 29TH JUNE: The full list of winners for the Green Game Jam are as follows:

ORIGINAL STORY 28TH JUNE: This year's Green Game Jam has just wrapped, and as with last year, I was asked to judge the Media's Choice part of it. If you don't know what it is, the Green Game Jam is an annual event organised by the Playing for the Planet Alliance - itself organised by the United Nations Environment Programme - that challenges game developers to make 'activations' for their games. These are packages of content both in and around the games based on a theme.

The theme this year was conserving wildlife and biodiversity, with a particular eye on the snow leopard and the Himalayas, the manta ray and the Western Indian Ocean and the harlequin toad and the Amazon. And as always, the sentiment fuelling the jam was how much can a game teach us about a problem while having some kind of impact on the real world too?

Microsoft considered launching a bid to buy Final Fantasy maker Square Enix, freshly-uncovered court documents have revealed.

Microsoft FTC Trial: Activision CEO Bobby Kotick on Call of Duty Exclusivity and Other Key Takeaways

10 months 3 weeks ago

Activision CEO Bobby Kotick took the witness stand during today's portion of the Microsoft FTC trial. Kotick shot down questions about making Call of Duty exclusive, admitted he wasn't impressed with Nintendo Switch prototypes before the system launched, and revealed a release window for Call of Duty: Warzone Mobile. Here's everything you need to know from Kotick's time in court today.

Kotick Doesn't Want to Make Call of Duty Exclusive

Call of Duty was obviously the big focus of Kotick's testimony and cross examination, and when the Activision CEO was asked if he's ever thought about making Call of Duty exclusive to one platform, he said "No."

“You would alienate over 100 million monthly active players," Kotick said. "Half of them play on phones, but the rest of them play on computer and PlayStation, and you would have a revolt if you were to remove the game from more than one platform.

"... You would have a revolt if you were to remove the game from more than one platform.

“Gamers are very passionate… And so with that kind of investment, time, and effort, you get an enthusiastic, passionate group of people.”

Kotick said it would be "very detrimental to our business” to take Call of Duty off PlayStation.

The Last of Us 2 and Horizon Forbidden West's Budgets Accidentally Revealed in Poorly-Redacted Document

10 months 3 weeks ago

The Last of Us: Part II and Horizon Forbidden West each cost more than $200 million to develop based on new documents submitted as part of the ongoing Xbox Federal Trade Commission case.

According to the poorly-redacted declaration submitted by Sony Interactive Entertainment, The Last of Us: Part 2 cost some $220 million to develop, with a peak headcount of some 200 full-time employees. Horizon Forbidden West, meanwhile, cost $212 million to develop and utilized more than 300 developers.

The budgets provide a rare glimpse into the world of big-budget game development, where exact numbers are often treated as closely-guarded secrets, as well as the sheer scale of AAA game development. Just recently, Xbox Game Studios head Matt Booty said that big-budget games now take a half-decade or more to make, with failure having the potential to ruin a studio.

In this case, the budgets seem to have been worth it. Both games sold well and were a critical part of the PlayStation's branding as a "prestige" platform.

Blizzard Unveils World of Warcraft: Classic Hardcore With Permanent Character Death

10 months 3 weeks ago

Blizzard has announced that it will be introducing a new way to play World of Warcraft: Classic, by adding Hardcore realms where every death is permanent.

Hardcore realms will be added to the public test realm (PTR) starting tomorrow, June 29, and are planned for official release later this summer. On Hardcore realms, characters cannot run back to their corpses and revive after dying, or be resurrected by a spell. Character that have died can linger in the game world as a ghost, communicate with other players, explore, and do certain actions such as passing on guild leadership to living characters.

All Hardcore realms are considered PvE realms, with Blizzard stating it wants PvP to be "optional and intentional" given the stakes. A new feature called "Duel to the Death" will be available on Hardcore realms that allows players to choose to enter a PvP fight with another player full aware that one will not make it out alive.

Additionally, other small quality of life changes will exist on hardcore realms such as preventing quest-related NPCs from being attacked by players of the opposing faction, and adjustments to how creatures run back to their intended zones to keep players from kiting high-level monsters into low-level areas and killing players unexpectedly.

Microsoft Considered Buying Final Fantasy Maker Square Enix

10 months 3 weeks ago

Microsoft considered adding Final Fantasy publisher Square Enix to the Xbox Game Studios family, a new internal document revealed as part of the evidentiary hearing between Microsoft and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC).

According to this new document from 2019, submitted as evidence as part of the hearings, Microsoft listed several reasons why it should acquire Square Enix. This included bolstering Xbox's presence in Asian markets and providing access to Square Enix's portfolio of games such as Kingdom Hearts, Dragon Quest, and Final Fantasy. These franchises would "drive the adoption" of Xbox Game Pass and Project Scarlett (one of the previous codename for the fourth-generation of Xbox consoles), Microsoft said.

More interestingly, the document reveals that another reason Xbox should buy Square Enix is it would have provided "mobile segment growth" for Xbox. Microsoft said buying Square Enix would have helped "future mobile-exclusive Game Pass offerings". Game Pass is currently available on Xbox and PC, with games playable on mobile via the cloud. While Microsoft's presence on mobile is minimal, Square Enix has what Xbox described as a "robust mobile-native portfolio".

Bandai Namco Cross Store London

Bandai Namco will be opening a new retail store in London in July 2023. The Bandai Namco Cross Store will feature six official shops offering a variety of collectibles, cards and other merchandise based on Bandai Namco’s franchises.

The Bandai Namco Cross Store already has two locations in Japan, located in Yokohama and Fukuoka. The new location in Camden Market in London will be the first Cross Store location outside Japan.

https://twitter.com/bncrossstoreuk/status/1673999440330342404

The six shops within the Bandai Namco Cross Store London location are:

  • Banpresto Official Shop
  • Gashapon Bandai Official Shop
  • Ichibankuji Official Shop
  • MegaHouse Official Store
  • One Piece Card Game Official Shop
  • Sun-Star Stationery Shop

There will also be an arcade and an event space with the store.

Many of these stores will be making their first appearances in the UK. However, it’s not the first time Gashapon Bandai has opened outside Japan, as a pop-up store in Los Angeles is operating until August 2023.

It’s also not the first Bandai Namco attraction to open in London. The Namco Funscape opened in Westminster in 1997 and offered up arcade attractions. Due to redevelopment plans, Bandai Namco were forced to close the location in 2021. Other Namco Funscape locations are still in operation in other parts of the UK.

Newly revealed emails shed light on Microsoft, Sony negotiations over Activision's PlayStation future

10 months 3 weeks ago

As part of Microsoft's court battle with US antitrust agency the Federal Trade Commission, emails between Xbox boss Phil Spencer and PlayStation head Jim Ryan have been revealed, outlining Microsoft's initial proposal to Sony - regarding the Activision Blizzard games it would be willing to keep on the PlayStation platform should its $69bn acquisition be approved - and Ryan's lengthy counter-proposal.

As confirmed by Phil Spencer last September, Microsoft contacted Sony shortly after the January announcement of its proposed Activision Blizzard acquisition, providing a signed agreement to Sony guaranteeing Call of Duty would remain on PlayStation - with feature and content parity - for "at least several more years beyond" Sony current contract.

During his FTC deposition this week, Ryan admitted he "wasn't particularly" happy with Microsoft's original proposal, but "hoped it was an opening salvo" - and we now have a more precise picture of his initial response, thanks to newly revealed emails, as spotted by The Verge's Tom Warren. In a reply dated 26th May, Ryan informed Spencer that Microsoft's proposal "did not fulfil" the objective of "ensuring Activision Blizzard games are available on PlayStation", and that the company had "serious concerns" which an enclosed counter-proposal from Sony was intended to address.

Sony Accidentally Reveals That Call of Duty is Worth $800 Million to PlayStation Alone

10 months 3 weeks ago

An internal document from Sony revealed a ton of highly confidential information about its PlayStation brand. More specifically, we learned a lot about the Call of Duty revenues for PlayStation platforms alone.

The document, which was submitted as evidence for the ongoing trial between the Federal Trade Commission and Microsoft, focuses on a letter sent by PlayStation boss Jim Ryan. In the letter, which was poorly redacted, it mentions how much Call of Duty was worth to PlayStation alone. Specifically, the widely-popular first-person shooter franchise "directly generated over $800 million" in the United States alone in 2021, according to the document.

It%26%2339%3Bs%20not%20clear%20as%20day%2C%20but%20if%20you%20look%20hard%20enough%2C%20you%20can%20see%20the%20number.

It's no surprise how popular Call of Duty is as the most recent installment in the franchise, Modern Warfare II, became the fastest Call of Duty game to cross the $1 billion sold mark in 2022.

How to Use a VPN to Connect to Diablo 4

9 months 3 weeks ago

Blizzard tech support has recently suggested players utilize a VPN if they're ever experiencing issues while connecting to Battle.net or Diablo 4 servers. This comes after Blizzard spent considerable time fighting a distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack that recently rendered Diablo 4 unplayable for hours. If you're interested in using a VPN with Diablo 4, then we're here to guide you through the relevant steps as well. Then, in the future, you could be well-prepared enough to tackle any server issues or potential DDoS attacks that may arise during your gaming sessions, ensuring uninterrupted gameplay as much as possible.

Quick Navigation:

Diablo 4 stands out from other action role-playing games (ARPGs) with its unique approach to server selection. Unlike some other ARPGs, Diablo 4 doesn't restrict players to specific regions and instead assigns them to the most suitable server based on their IP address. However, if you encounter connectivity problems or wish to enhance your gaming experience, Blizzard support has recommended using a VPN to modify your server location. Here's how to get started:

1. Install a secure and reliable VPN on your chosen device. We recommend using ExpressVPN.

Review: Ghost Trick on Switch’s a Spiritual Experience

10 months 3 weeks ago

Ghost Trick review

When Capcom first announced the Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective port earlier in 2023, my timeline exploded with people insisting that everyone should experience this game without looking up anything about it. So outside of previewing it, I kept myself in the dark about this classic Shu Takumi title. Now that I finished it, I understand and I am also here to say: You should definitely play Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective, but read nothing about the story going in. It’s truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

That being said, I’m still going to quickly describe the plot. Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective follows the story of Sissel, a recently deceased ghost who discovers that he can manipulate the objects around him through the powers of the dead. “Ghost Tricks,” they’re called. He can also turn back time to four minutes before a person’s death and change their fate. Using these powers, he plans to uncover the mystery of his lost memories, as well as figure out what's behind the odd happenings around town. Unfortunately, he’s on borrowed time. Sissel only has until dawn to do all this before he fades away for good.

The game has seen three seasons of updates since its launch last summer, but Yager has now announced development is coming to an end, with its most recent patch being its last.

The Solidigm P44 Pro 2TB is down to $117 and rivals Samsung's 990 Pro for speed

I've mentioned SK Hynix before, the flash memory giant that made Intel's SSDs and is now making their own SSDs under the Solidigm brand. The Korean company has pursued an aggressive pricing strategy for these drives, and evidence of that is this latest deal on their flagship P44 Pro 2TB PCIe 4.0 NVMe drive.

The P44 Pro is now down to $117 at Newegg when you use code SSCT2827, a price that also includes a free mousepad - nifty. For context, the 2TB drive was selling for $150, making this a pretty tidy discount.

Xbox FTC Trial Day 4: Bobby Kotick and Jim Ryan Agree on One Thing – Neither of Them Like Game Pass

10 months 3 weeks ago

Another busy court day in the books, with the FTC v. Microsoft trial set to conclude tomorrow. It was a surprisingly quiet day compared to some of the previous ones, with Microsoft head Satya Nadella giving relatively mild testimony, Activision CEO Bobby Kotick calmly parrying his FTC inquisitors, and a lot more economist talk.

We also got to see, briefly, Nadella and Judge Jacqueline Scott Corley bond over a mutual love for Candy Crush. Delightful.

Exclusivity For Me, But Not For Thee

Console exclusivity has been a part of how video game releases work effectively since video games came into existence. But to hear Xbox and friends tell it over the last few days, everyone in the industry just hates the idea.

Figures like Microsoft head Satya Nadella and Activision CEO Bobby Kotick today made exclusivity seem less like a feature and more like a bug, ruining their ability to do business on certain platforms and reach larger markets of people. Nadella, for instance, mentioned that he had "no love" for exclusives, while Kotick emphasized that taking Call of Duty exclusive to Xbox would be "very detrimental" to business.

All of this is in line with Spencer's comments. Collectively, Xbox and its witnesses and lawyers appear to be making the argument that the entire idea of exclusivity is a loathesome one they play along with because Sony forced their hands. If Sony would just stop paying for exclusives like Final Fantasy XVI, they argue Xbox wouldn't have to do deals like it has with Activision just to compete.

McDonald’s in Japan Will Hold Nijisanji Collaboration

Nijisanji McDonald's

McDonald’s in Japan is collaborating with Nijisanji for an upcoming promotion, though it’s unclear as of yet what it will entail. The Nijisanji Vtubers who will be part of it as Belmond Banderas, Kanae, and Fuwa Minato. They are not sporting new designs for the collaboration as of the time of writing.

Based on past collaborations that McDonald’s Japan announced, it’s possible that there will be new food items on the menu based on the three Vtubers. While McDonald’s collaborations in the west might mean Happy Meal toys, Nijisanji is not marketed specifically for children. So this is the more likely possibility. We might also get to see Kanae, Fuwa, and Banderas in McDonald’s uniforms when the promotion starts.

In the past, when McDonald’s in Japan held a collaboration with One Piece, it was to market a specific type of burger. It also released a promotional video based on the One Piece opening, and you could also get a special One Piece float for a limited time.
