Sony court documents removed after redacted details spotted

10 months 2 weeks ago

Sony has had its exhibits pulled from court after failing to properly redact financial information.

As part of the ongoing Microsoft vs FTC court case, Sony provided documentation detailing confidential information about its PlayStation business. As is custom, key details in this documentation were redacted. At least, they were meant to be.

Thanks to the retrospectively poor choice of using a Sharpie marker to redact the key information, it's easy to see the contents of these redactions now the document has been scanned.

Bloober Team "closing the era" of psychological horror games

10 months 2 weeks ago

Bloober Team is moving on from the psychological horror games it is known for, with the recent Layers of Fear remaster being its last game of the genre.

That said, it's still sticking with horror. Instead, Bloober is now making "mass-market horror".

What does that mean? Bloober says it will result in a renewed focus on gameplay over atmosphere, owing to its games being described as "walking simulators".

We're letting you try a month of being a Eurogamer Supporter for free

10 months 2 weeks ago

I've got good news! We're letting everyone have a month of being a Eurogamer Supporter for free. Think of it as a free trial, if you like. And it can start today, if you want it to.

We're doing it because we want to show off what we offer. We want you to experience the site without adverts and all that peaceful white space you'll suddenly see. We want you to read Emma's memorable adventures she writes each month for supporters (and there's a new one arriving today). We want you to get involved in the weekly discussions around Five of the Best, and to snuggle up for Donlan's weekly thoughts in Game of the Week, which are usually about much more than the game of the week itself.

You'll also be able to listen to the Inside Eurogamer podcast, which is a new monthly show for subs. There have only been a couple of episodes but the first one - the one where we hear from new editor-in-chief Tom Phillips about his vision for Eurogamer going forward, and about why we moved to a five-star rating system - will probably be of interest to you.

Our 22 favourite games of 2023 so far

10 months 2 weeks ago

Don't look now, but we're almost halfway through 2023. How is that even possible? I hear you cry. Well, I'm not entirely sure either. The last time I checked it was freezing cold outside and the sun went down at 3pm, but here we are with long, sunlit evenings and that sticky sheen of an early, muggy summer. Or at least it's been quite clammy in the RPS Treehouse this month, as we've all been sweating over our favourite games of the year so far.

The Sims 5 Will Seemingly Adopt a Fortnite Monetisation Model

10 months 2 weeks ago

EA will seemingly make The Sims 5, or Project Rene as it's currently officially known, a free to play game that allows user generated content in a monetisation model similar to Fortnite's.

As reported by Sims Community, EA posted a job listing looking for a head of marketplace and monetisation for Project Rene which described it as a "free-to-enter" game.

The candidate will "own pricing of all content in this free-to-enter game, ensuring we have an optimal pricing and content architecture [and] provide guidance to content teams on in-game content needs to meet player demand.

Another responsibility mentioned the in-game marketplace and management of user generated content. The candidate will "own Project Rene's in-game marketplace of content and ugc (free and paid), and manage a data-informed player-centric player purchase journey: maximising value to players, optimising player spend patterns, and minimising player churn."

EA launched its Roblox-esque Fortnite Creative 2.0 in March, which lets players make their own content for other users to use, either for free or at a cost. The monetisation model mentioned in the job listing sounds very similar to this, suggesting the basic version of The Sims 5 could be a free to play game with additional purchases available for those looking to buy new houses, clothes, and so on.

IGN has asked EA for comment on Project Rene's monetisation.

Star Wars Jedi Survivor Drops to its Cheapest Price Since Launch in the UK

10 months 2 weeks ago

Star Wars Jedi Survivor, the sequel to Jedi Fallen Order (2019), was a critic and fan hit despite a few typical bugs that have generally been ironed out since. Its RRP at launch was £69.99, which still feels a little steep despite it being the new trend for AAA games, but you can now buy the game for just £48 on sale. That's over 30% off the latest Star Wars adventure and the cheapest retail price for a new copy of the game since launch.

This year already feels like it's been stacked with a great selection of new video games, and there's more on the way. But, if you haven't had the chance to pick up one of the Game of the Year contenders just yet, then here's your chance. We'll leave the links to both the Xbox and PS5 listing just below, but just as a reminder: Amazon Prime Day is also coming up soon, so you should expect even more gaming and tech deals over the 48-hour sale on July 11-12.

In our 9/10 review, IGN said: "If Respawn makes a third game like Star Wars Jedi: Survivor and Fallen Order, it'll complete the best Star Wars trilogy in 30 years, hands down." Fans have also recently been excited by the potential return of one of Jedi Survivors' most beloved characters in the next entry.

Here's how Pikmin 4's time rewind feature works

10 months 2 weeks ago

Pikmin 4's time rewind feature is a big addition to the series, though I admit being apprehensive at first around how it might be deployed. After a week with the game - and you can read some of my early thoughts here - I've come to use it sparingly, but appreciate its existence.

As its name suggests, the feature allows you to skip backwards and undo any sudden calamity. Though in doing so, my initial fear was it risked devaluing the Pikmin series' usual high stakes.

After all, the frequent likelihood of imminent Pikmin death - their agonising squeals, the sad sight of their soul floating slowly upwards - acts to ensure you approach each situation with care.

Football Manager boss disputes PlayStation's "value destructive" Xbox Game Pass claim

10 months 2 weeks ago

Among the many, many claims and discoveries flying around in the wake of Microsoft's ongoing FTC lawsuit over the attempted purchase of Activision Blizzard, one particular quote stands out: PlayStation boss Jim Ryan's accusation that Xbox Game Pass and other subscription-based services are "value destructive" to video games.

Ryan, speaking in pre-recorded video testimony, also claimed other publishers "unanimously do not like Game Pass" for that reason. When pressed by Microsoft's lawyer, he added: "I talk to publishers all the time, and this is a very commonly-held view over many years by the publishers."

Talking to Eurogamer yesterday, Miles Jacobson, studio head of Sports Interactive, the Sega-owned developer of the ever-popular Football Manager series, disagreed with that quite directly.

The future of Football Manager

10 months 2 weeks ago

Sports Interactive boss Miles Jacobson has announced a range of major shifts coming to the Football Manager series, dubbed "one of the biggest changes in our history."

In an extensive developer blog, Jacobson apologised for the relative lack of new features in FM23, announced save game transfers coming in FM24, and the long-awaited arrival of women's football in FM25 - first announced back in 2021. Alongside all that is a shift from the studio's own in-house game development engine to the ubiquitous Unity.

All this makes this year's FM24 a "closing of this chapter in our history", Jacobson said, with a major revamp of everything from graphics, to UI, to underlying systems coming next year in FM25 - something Jacobson said will be, "for the first time in decades, a true sequel."

Fate/strange Fake Teaser Introduces Flat and Berserker

10 months 2 weeks ago

Fate/strange Fake Berserker Flat

Aniplex uploaded another short teaser for Fate/strange Fake -Whispers of Dawn-, with a focus on Berserker this time. Though the teaser focuses on Berserker and his Master, Lord El-Melloi II (Waver Velvet) also makes a short appearance. Daisuke Namikawa will reprise his role as Lord El-Melloi II.

Due to the nature of this particular Berserker’s true identity, he does not actually make an appearance in the Fate/strange Fake teaser, though you can hear him talking. His Master is Flat Escardos, who is one of El-Melloi’s students at the Clock Tower. He has a peppy manner of speech, but since he seems to want to rule the world, there's more to him that it seems.

You can watch the Berserker trailer from Fate/strange Fake here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2__XBqdYZ0w

Yoshitsugu Matsuoka will voice Flat Escardos. Matsuoka has had many major roles in the past, such as Kirito in Sword Art Online, Soma in Food Wars, and Xiao in Genshin Impact. Kenyu Horiuchi will voice Berserker. Horiuchi is a veteran voice actor whose career started in 1983. Horiuchi portrayed Mashymre in Mobile Suit Gundam ZZ, Raiden and Raikov in the Metal Gear Solid series, and Fourchenault in Final Fantasy XIV.

Pikmin 2 Is Adorable Despite Its Pacing Issues

10 months 2 weeks ago

Pikmin 2 Nintendo Switch preview

Pikmin 2 is one of those games that I dreamed of playing for the last nearly 20 years. As a young kid, I remember seeing its demo on a GameCube at the local game store and always being intrigued by its colorful space adventure. Finally checking it out for several hours for the first time, I’m convinced it is a one-of-a-kind gem, flaws and all.

The remastered Nintendo Switch game kicks off with Captain Olimar finding out his company is in deep dirt. To help the it out, he has to return to the home of the adorable Pikmin to find weirdly-named, everyday treasures like batteries and oranges to sell for cash.

This simple premise allows for some radical changes from the first game, such as new Pikmin creatures like the white and purple ones, the ability to control Louie, and the stress-free nature of its daily cycle. Even though this was my first foray in the series, I quickly settled into the rhythm of defeating enemies, adding new colorful critters to my army, and digging up treasure.

Confirmed: Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol. 1 Does Not Support Mouse and Keyboard on PC

10 months 2 weeks ago

The PC version of Konami's Metal Gear Solid Master Collection Vol 1 does not support mouse and keyboard and fans aren't happy.

The Steam pages for the original trilogy of games were listed earlier in June then quickly taken down, but not before fans noticed the lack of mouse and keyboard support. While many were hoping Konami's takedown of the pages meant this issue was being fixed, they have now reemerged with the same message.

"Metal Gear Solid Master Collection version requires a controller in order to play," reads the Steam page for the first game. "Playing with a keyboard and mouse isn't supported." Equivalent messages can be seen on the other games' pages too.

"No keyboard controls it seems," said LordEmmerich on Twitter (above), who spotted the initial Steam pages. "It doesn't bother me but it probably will bother a few."

That is certainly the case, as many Metal Gear fans across Twitter, Reddit, and Steam have made their grievances clear. "The lack of mouse and keyboard support seems like a bad sign that this could be a trash port," said Sammy on the Steam page. "One thing is for sure, I'm not preordering."

Xbox Made a Fancy Controller Out of Actual Jade

10 months 2 weeks ago

Microsoft has made a fancy Xbox controller out of actual Jade to commemorate Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty coming to the console.

Xbox posted a video showcasing the creation of the controller, which required Jade craftsman Andy Chi to forge the gamepad using specialist equipment.

"If I can make a very exquisite jade product as a jade worker, and people will preserve it for a long time or permanently, I could think of nothing to be prouder of," Chi said ahead of the project.

The%20unique%20jade%20Xbox%20controller%20(Image%20Credit%3A%20Xbox)

Making the first jade video game controller in the world came with difficulties, of course. Chi separated the controller's shell into eight pieces, but after spending almost a week cutting two of them, he discovered cracks. "From my mistake I started many, many times," he said.

Chi also had to make sure the jade surface was still comfortable for players to use and allowed for all the normal functionality one would expect from a gamepad. "When you press these directional buttons, we ensured the buttons do not come into contact with jade, but instead come into contact with plastic, so that it will not damage the jade during prolonged gameplay," Chi said.

These Tears of the Kingdom Collectables Are Finally Back in Stock in the UK

10 months 2 weeks ago

Game of the Year contender The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is already being regarded as one of the best games of all time, and will surely be considered in that conversation for a long time to come. If you've been loving the game but missed out on securing the following collectable items in recent weeks, we've got some good news.

Both the Tears of the Kingdom Switch Pro Controller, and the game's official Collector's Edition Guidebook are now back in stock in the UK for RRP. No need to keep a keen eye on eBay for these items. The Pro Controller can be picked up for £64.99 right with free next-day delivery if you're a Prime Member, and the Collector's Edition Guidebook is available for just £29.99 as well. The paperback edition is also available to order, but delivery is delayed as it's temporarily out of stock.

Tears of the Kingdom's success this year isn't a secret as Nintendo announced the Breath of the Wild sequel sold 10 million copies within three days. That being said, overcoming 2023's other hit games through physical sales alone is a significant accomplishment in an industry where major developers are giving up on boxed copies altogether.

This week's biggest headlines from the FTC vs Microsoft trial

10 months 2 weeks ago

This week on the Eurogamer Newscast, we look back at a week of headlines from Microsoft's time in court arguing its case to buy Activision Blizzard with the FTC.

In the video game industry, courtroom drama does not get much bigger than this. Microsoft's Phil Spencer and Satya Nadella, Sony's Jim Ryan and Activision boss Bobby Kotick have all given evidence as the US weighs up whether to allow Xbox's enormous Call of Duty buyout to procede.

The week has brought us some eye-opening opinions from these top industry execs, as well as a treasure trove of emails to pore through - and some badly-redacted documentation. Today, we recap the biggest stories of the week, including who else was on Microsoft's studio shopping list, and why Bethesda is upset at Call of Duty not being platform exclusive. Nvidia GeForce RTX 4060 vs RTX 3060 review: higher frame-rates, less VRAM

10 months 2 weeks ago

Regularly topping the Steam hardware survey as the most popular graphics cards, Nvidia's 60-class products are often the 'go to' product for the mainstream gamer, with the green team usually dominating, even when rival products can be just as good or even better. With 60-class, the power of the GeForce brand comes into its own and to be fair, Nvidia has delivered some excellent GPUs. The GTX 1060 is still supremely popular, while last-gen's RTX 3060 is currently the cheapest GPU you can buy with 12GB of VRAM - an increasingly important spec point. You can think of the RTX 4060 as broadly on par with the old RTX 2070 Super - a $499 product back in 2019 - so it's generally faster than the 3060, but it does ship with just 8GB of RAM.

That's clearly a challenge for the new card, even though its suggested retail price is actually lower than its predecessor, the issue being that discounting means RTX 3060 can be a lot cheaper - and capable of superior price vs performance ratios in some scenarios while stocks last. The fact is that VRAM is becoming increasingly more important and Nvidia cutting it by a third gen-on-gen is problematic. That's a shame because the inherent advantages of the Ada Lovelace architecture are all present and correct on the RTX 4060 and, in the case of DLSS 3 in particular, we're seeing gaming feats on this £289/$299 product that nothing else can get close to.

Synapse - a pure power fantasy that epitomises everything great about virtual reality

10 months 2 weeks ago

It starts with a squeeze of the trigger and a flick of my left wrist. Where once stood an enemy, gun raised and pointed in my direction, there's now an empty space. Looking up I follow the body as it arcs through the air, and there I catch it with my telekinesis powers and slam it into the ground below where it smashes into digital shards on jagged, monochromatic rocks.

Spotting a group of enemies hiding behind cover I reach out with my telekinetic powers and use them to lift an explosive barrel into position above their heads. Then, with a simple clench of my fist, the barrel explodes sending rocks and bodies flying in all directions.

Later, while holding an SMG in my right hand, I use my psychic powers to snatch a flying Sentinel enemy out of the air and pin it to the floor before peppering its body with bullets until it explodes and melts away.

Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis Closed Beta Test Players Decided by Lottery

Square Enix took to Twitter to offer more details on how the Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis closed beta test will work. People had until June 28, 2023 to sign up. However, demand is so high that not everyone will get into it. Instead, the company will randomly pick who gets to participate from everyone who applied. The current plan is for people who were picked to be alerted on July 5, 2023.

As a reminder, this closed beta test is only for Android users. Registrations opened during Summer Game Fest 2023, when Square Enix released a new trailer for the game. Those who get in will get to play through some of the original Crisis Core and Final Fantasy VII storylines, though the game will touch on new stories as well.

There’s also an update on pre-registration rewards. Over 400,000 people committed to playing the game. That means we’ll all get 10 Draw Tickets and 1,000 Blue Crystals. There are still five more tiers to possibly hit, with those rewards being a Jumpstart Item Set, five more Draw Tickets, 500 more Blue Crystals, and a Zweihander sword. There will need to be 1,000,000 pre-registrations hit to get every item.

Hands-On With Wild Card Football, A Gridiron Game That Draws Inspiration From Mario Kart

10 months 2 weeks ago

In the 21st century, fans of the NFL have had minimal choices when it comes to their officially licensed football games. Ever since 2004, EA Sports' annualized Madden NFL series has been the exclusive franchise for the NFL, its teams, stadiums, and players. The result was the closure of other franchises, such as the competitive NFL 2K series, as well as the arcade-focused NFL Blitz franchise (which was later acquired by EA in 2011). The recently announced Wild Card Football from Saber Interactive, part of the Playgrounds franchise, hopes to smash through the established line to give players a fresh 7-on-7 arcade-facing take on the sport starring their favorite players.

Wild Card Football doesn't possess the NFL license, but rather the NFLPA license. This means the teams and stadiums of the National Football League aren't present, but many of its biggest stars are. I witness this firsthand as I scroll through the teams available. The in-game teams are centered around the quarterbacks, with Team Mahomes, Team Burrow, and a squad built around this game's cover star, Team Kaepernick. If you'd rather create your own team, you can enter Dream Squad mode, customize your roster, playbook, and uniforms, and advance through challenges to unlock rewards.

Baldur's Gate 3 Re-Rolls Initiative, Advancing PC Release Date But Delaying PS5

10 months 2 weeks ago

While game delays have become commonplace, the opposite is extremely rare. Today, we learned Baldur's Gate 3 is somehow doing both at the same time. Initially planned for August 31, developer Larian Studios is advancing the PC release date to August 3 while delaying the PS5 version to September 6. According to the most recent community update, the change was done to prioritize release in order of platform readiness. More specifically, the team needed a little more time to get the PS5 version up to 60 frames per second.

"The PlayStation 5 version will be released roughly a week later than its originally scheduled date of August 31st," the community update reads. "Baldur’s Gate 3 is targeting 60 frames-per-second and we’re close to achieving that on the platform but need a bit more extra time. We don’t want to compromise on quality, and feel it would be a shame to downscale to 30fps or make other compromises to hit an arbitrary date."
