One Piece Film: Red Celebrates Box Office Success With New Trailer

1 year 7 months ago

One Piece Film: Red is riding a wave of success at the box office, and the movie has received a new trailer to commemorate the occasion.

Streamed via the official One Piece YouTube channel on Sept. 5, the trailer offers a synopsis of the film’s story and some key dialogue from its key players. The latter includes series mainstays like Monkey D. Luffy, the Strawhat crew and Red Hair Shanks, as well as the original character Uta.

The trailer kicks off by pointing out one of the film’s biggest achievements. Since its release, it has grossed over 10 billion yen at the Japanese box office, making it the first One Piece film to do so as well as the best selling One Piece film in history. This is before it has even premiered in the West, which is set to help the movie’s worldwide gross climb even further.

The trailer then moves into clips of the characters, starting with Uta’s introduction during a flashback. She says that she’s the musician of the Red Hair Pirates, and that she’ll build a new genesis of freedom for all. Before she can provide an example of her singing chops though, the trailer cuts to a scene of Luffy wondering what happened to Uta, only for Shanks to respond that she left to become a musician.

This is followed by another cut, which moves to a scene of Uta weeping amid a burning town and angrily screaming at Shanks.

Enjoying Sonic Frontiers Will Require an Open Mind (Hands-on Preview)

1 year 7 months ago

Sonic Frontiers: these are the voyages of a blue hedgehog. His mission: to explore strange new islands, to seek out new life and old civilizations, to boldly go where no Sonic Team developer has gone before.

As soon as I sat down to play the behind-closed-doors demo of Sonic Frontiers at Gamescom, I realized that appreciating the game would have required keeping an open mind, pretty much like the crew of the Enterprise in Star Trek.

We’re definitely exploring unknown territory, and the game is very, very different from any linear Sonic we’ve played before, whether it was in 2D or 3D.

Sure. Sonic still goes fast and he’s still blue, but most other elements of the game are different. At least he doesn’t have teeth.

The demo dropped me straight on the second island of the game which is a desert-like environment named Ares full of enemies and (for some reason) suspended rails to grind on, booster pads to speed you up, and bumpers to bounce from.

I was pretty much free to explore (perhaps a bit too freely, because the game did not offer much in terms of guidance) and fight whatever enemies I wanted, from smaller goons to a massive sand shark or an absolutely gigantic boss.

What Happened to Viserys’ Fingers in House of the Dragon?

1 year 7 months ago

Since its premiere, House of the Dragon has been no stranger to time skips between episodes. One of the more shocking developments from these jumps was revealed in the third episode of the first season, which confirmed that Viserys Targaryen is now missing the pinky and ring fingers of his left hand. As a result, this has left many fans wondering what exactly happened to Viserys’ fingers between episodes two and three of House of the Dragon.

What Happened to Viserys’ Fingers in House of the Dragon?

Although viewers have yet to be given a concrete answer in the show itself, it seems highly likely that Viserys’ fingers were amputated due to the symptoms of his mysterious illness. We first caught wind of his sickness in the first episode, as the maesters were treating a lesion on his back that refused to heal. The scene ended with the suggestion of cauterization to further the healing of the wound.

In Episode 2 of House of the Dragon, we see the king being treated with maggots to remove the dead flesh of his pinky finger to, in the words of the maester, “hopefully stop the advance of the rot.” It’s now clear that this attempt to heal Viserys failed, and amputation of both the pinky and ring finger was required.

Some viewers have posited that Viserys Targaryen is afflicted with an earlier incarnation of greyscale, particularly due to its spreading across his skin. Although the coloration and bruising of his fingers in the third episode are similar to what we’ve seen of greyscale in Game of Thrones, the fact that the disease isn’t spreading from Viserys to those who are treating him heavily implies that it could be something else entirely.

1 year 7 months ago

It’s that time of year again, whereas a new raid is launched in Destiny 2. By the time this article is out, the World’s First Race for the King’s Fall raid and thus contest mode will have concluded. As is the case with every raid thus far (including the similar reprised version of Vault of Glass last year), a bunch of new stuff has been unlocked for the entire Destiny community. Most relevant here, however, is the release of the Touch of Malice Exotic scout rifle. A gun that is just as synonymous as the iconic Taken King raid itself. Unfortunately – the gun is a random RNG drop, so it’s all up to mathematical chance. So, here is how to get the Touch of Malice in Destiny 2.

Kinetic Games Drops Updated Phasmophobia Roadmap With Custom Difficulty Arriving Shortly

1 year 7 months ago

For all the ghost hunters out there, Kinetic Games has provided more info for the rest of the year following an earlier sharing, with an updated roadmap showing off what fans can expect for Phasmophobia in 2022. This includes the arrival of custom difficulty in the month of September, followed by a URP Upgrade to round off the year.

“We’ve squeezed in loads of extra things and even a few new [REDACTED] for you to enjoy, all will be revealed when the update trailer drops very soon,” the update said. Those extras would likely point towards the new map of Sunny Meadows, as well as the report system alongside other unrevealed goodies.

This change in schedule was due to the VR rework taking more time than anticipated, so the team decided to push things back while dropping smaller content patches to fill the gap. Following the implementation of custom difficulty in Phasmophobia, Kinetic Games will release the URP Upgrade, which brings new weather effects, volumetric lighting, and more optimization for the entire experience.

Marvel Snap Best Nick Fury Decks & Combos

1 year 7 months ago

With the release of the Sword and Shield season, Marvel Snap players can now purchase the new season pass to get a new card, Nick Fury. With a new card to play around with, here’s our take on the best Nick Fury decks and combos in Marvel Snap.

Marvel Snap Best Nick Fury Deck

First off, Nick Fury is a 5-cost, 7-power card with the On Reveal ability: Add 3 random 6-cost cards to your hand. This ability is immediately appealing because he makes for a decent turn five play, where he’ll give you three 6-cost options to consider for your final turn. This can be especially helpful in games where you might’ve had bad draws, or don’t have a great play line for turn six.

Rocksmith+ Might Be the Most Fun Way to Learn to Play Guitar

1 year 7 months ago

Rocksmith has been around since 2011, beginning as an alternative to the five button rhythm guitar craze, set apart by the fact that it lets players use their own real six strings as the controller, turning the act of actually playing a guitar into a rhythm game. Over the years, it’s more been touted for its success as a guitar learning tool than an actual competitor to other rhythm games, and that’s really what Rocksmith+ leans into. Rocksmith+ is a subscription service that costs either $14.99 per month, $39.99 for three months, and $99.99 for a full year, and along with that cost comes a library of more than 5,000 songs, a comprehensive suite of lectures to teach you how to play guitar at just about every level, and a staggering amount of tools to help meet you at your level of guitar skill, and fine tune it from there.

And it all works! Having given it a test run for a few weeks, and coming in with just a handful of guitar lessons from back when I was a teenager and a few hours of messing around with previous Rocksmith iterations as my foundation, I certainly improved my knowledge of chords, increased my finger dexterity, and learned about proper guitar playing form.

Toby Fox Teases “Something Special” for Deltarune Anniversary, But No New Chapters this Year

1 year 7 months ago

It’s been a while since the release of Deltarune Chapter 1, and fans largely considered it to be a worthy follow-up to Toby Fox’s excellent indie game Undertale. Since then, we’ve also gotten the release of the second chapter, which continued the story of Kris and Rasiel, but it’s been silence after that.

Toby Fox announced via Twitter today that unfortunately, we won’t be seeing the release of Chapter 3 this year. This is likely due to the development getting stalled during the pandemic, and working to actually expand the development team to help work on the project. He had also previously stated that the next three chapters of Deltarune would be released together, so the longer wait is to be expected.

Even so, it looks like there’s still something to look forward to next week, as Toby Fox teases something special for the anniversary of Undertale and Deltarune Chapter 2.

It might very well be a teaser video or trailer, or some sort of look at what he’s working on. We’ll keep you updated as more info comes our way. Undertale and Deltarune are now available on PC.

Off Topic: Il Buco is a transporting film about a really big hole

1 year 7 months ago

Last week I watched Il Buco, or The Hole, the latest film from the Italian director Michelangelo Frammartino. It's mesmerising. With very little in the way of dialogue, Frammartino tells the story of a 1960s spelunking expedition that explored one of the deepest cave systems in the world.

At first glance Il Buco seems filled with slightly trite opposites. The expedition comes from the urban north of Italy to the bucolic south, and one scene shows a cluster of kids gathered around a TV set that's broadcasting a news piece about the tallest building in the country, which is being constructed while the spelunkers are heading off in the opposite direction.

But all of this is a distraction, I think. Or rather, it felt like Frammartino was throwing things in to the movie to allow you to ruminate and begin the process of looking for meanings. The bulk of the film is concerned with a more engaging case of opposites: an elderly shepherd spending his last days with his flock, while that hole slowly reveals its depths.

Ravenbound Preview – Deckbuilding Roguelike Taps into Scandinavian Folklore For Something Different

Roguelites have been a staple genre in modern gaming for quite some time now, but developers System Reaction are looking to stand out with their latest project, Ravenbound. A focus on a unique fantasy world inspired by Scandinavian folklore that features intense combat, a deck-building mechanic, and the freedom to choose how you want to play.

Just hearing about these features is intriguing enough, but thanks to a hands-off presentation by the developers, it seems that Ravenbound is well placed to fulfill its open-world roguelite promise, at least at this early stage.

The Sims 4 - a game of cycles that could do with starting anew

1 year 7 months ago

The Sims has been around for 22 years now, with even the fourth, and most recent, numbered entry being a venerable eight years old. My first time playing the original was a communal experience in the sixth form common room, crowded around a friend's laptop. We created a replica of said common room, populated it with facsimiles of friends and mostly left them to their own devices. One of them forgot where the toilet was and peed himself, then cried about it.

The Sims 2? Not sure if I even played it. I was 21 when it was released in 2004 and, like much of my life back then, the memories are a bit fuzzy.

Number three meanwhile was inspirational. Not so much the game itself, although many would say it's the high point of the series, but the writing about it. Robin Burkinshaw's "Alice and Kev", a blog chronicling the adventures of a homeless Sim and his daughter, really struck a chord and inspired me to try my hand at something similar. (It was rubbish.)

A Beloved Cult Classic Casts a Spell on the Competition & Flies to the Top of Streaming

1 year 7 months ago

Out of all the Halloween movies that have come and gone, one has not only laid claim to cult status, but has lodged itself firmly in our collective hearts. Whether it’s nostalgia, its myriad of likable characters (even the “evil” ones), or its terrific sense of humor, there’s something magnetic about this dark fantasy comedy. Yes, that’s right, we’re talking about 1993’s Hocus Pocus, which has managed to zoom on its broomstick all the way into the top 10 of Disney+ lately, nabbing the tenth spot, according to FlixPatrol.

Blending light horror elements with a whimsical tone, Hocus Pocus centers on a coven of three witches – Winifred, Mary, and Sarah – who spend their leisurely downtime sucking the life out of infants in a bid for immortality. Once they’re captured by the local lynching party, the witches perform an evil incantation that curses the townsfolk allowing the witches to return to life on the next full moon during All Hallows’ Eve. Fast-forward to modern times, and an unsuspecting brother and sister inadvertently awaken the long lost curse.

Kotaku writer Mike Fahey has passed away

1 year 7 months ago

Mike Fahey's bio on Kotaku read, "Lover of video games, keyboards, toys, snacks and other unsavory things." All of this is true, as any of his legion of commited readers could tell you. But in one of the all time great Fahey pieces, he offered an even better description: "I am a 6'6" man with a vivid imagination and strange thought processes."

This is the Fahey that his readers truly knew - a gentle, sweet-natured giant with a brilliant mind and an eye for the angle that nobody else had thought of - a willingness to monitor a situation and just see where it went.

Fahey died last week at 49 after a long illness. He was a generous, ingenious, and kind writer whose posts always left you feeling happier - and more curious about things - than you had felt when you started reading them. He did indeed love snacks and toys and keyboards, of which he reviewed plenty. He loved video games, which he covered with perceptiveness, originality, and great care.

You can obtain this magical energy in various ways, such as doing specific tasks, getting rid of Night Thorns, and leveling up friendships. Players can also find Dreamlight Duties at the Wishing Well or on the menu to see what kind of missions are available; sometimes, they are simple enough to do right away. For example, you can harvest five plants or cook meals to increase your Dreamlight inventory.
