Minecraft mods let you disable Mojang's controversial chat reporting

1 year 9 months ago

Minecraft: Java Edition's latest update introduced a new player reporting tool, which allows players to submit "inappropriate chat messages or dangerous behaviour" for moderators to review. That seems like a good thing on the its face, but many Minecraft players aren't happy that it extends to private servers.

Naturally, because this is Minecraft, players have changed what they don't like. There are now mods which strip messages of information tieing them to your player profile.

Spacewar!, the First Known Video Game Ever Made, Is Now Playable on Analogue Pocket

1 year 9 months ago

Spacewar!, the first known digital video game ever made, is now available on the Analogue Pocket thanks to the new PDP-1 Core developed with openFPGA.

FPGA, or field-programmable gate array, is a type of integrated circuit that can be reconfigured after it's manufactured. openFPGA, on the other hand, is the "first purpose built, FPGA driven hardware and ecosystem designed for 3rd party development of video game hardware." It was also "created specifically for preserving video game history."

Spacewar! is obviously a big part of video game history and a 3rd party developer has "painstakingly recreated" the game released on the PDP-1 in 1962 by developers at MIT using public domain open source code for openFPGA.

Someone Already Built P.T. in Halo Infinite's Forge... Before the Mode Is Even Out

1 year 9 months ago

Halo Infinite's much-anticipated Forge Mode has yet to be released, but that hasn't stopped @DeathTempler from recreating P.T.'s terrifying hallway in an early version of it.

As reported by PC Gamer, certain players like Death Templer have found a way to access an unfinished version of Halo Infinite's Forge Mode in the latest co-op campaign test flight and it has given these creators some powerful tools to create some impressive pieces of work.

You can watch a walkthrough of P.T.'s hallway in Halo Infinite's Forge Mode by clicking here, and you can see that the newest iteration of Forge allows for much more customization, better lighting options, more varied sound effects, and more.

This is only the beginning for Death Templer's mission to recreate P.T., as he has a goal to "make PT so well in Forge one day, it prompts a cease and desist from Konami."

PC Gamer notes that players should avoid trying to access Forge mode and wait for the Open Beta in September as the process requires third-party tools that very well may get you banned by 343 Industries. The ban hammer has yet to be swung by the Halo developer, but it may just be a matter of time now.

Harry Harrison's 1980s game book is a bit of a riot

1 year 9 months ago

In the house where I grew up, I shared a room with two older brothers. I was a nosy kid, and I have a lot of happy memories of looking through my brothers' books and whatnot while they weren't around. One day - this is decades back; I can at least remember that it was sunny - I found a paperback that my brother Paul had picked up somewhere. Paul liked science-fiction This was sci-fi. It was by Harry Harrison, and it was one of his Stainless Steel Rat novels.

Actually, it was a very special one, an odd one. But we'll get to that in a second. Harry Harrison was a big deal in 20th century sci-fi, a writer who moved from illustrating comics to turning out novels that existed in the raggedy edge-lands between parodying space operas and reveling in their excesses. However he handled things, he always brought an anti-war message that was sometimes hidden, given the rather conservative genre he worked within. Outside of the Stainless Steel Rat books - the Rat is a charming con-man and occasional hero - he's probably best known for writing the novel that Soylent Green was loosely based upon.

So yes, the book of Paul's I'd found was a bit of an oddity amongst Harrison's output. It was a game book. You Can Be The Stainless Steel Rat was published in 1985, according to my lovely eBay copy, battered but still with a bit of gloss on the cover. 1985! This means it hit right in the middle of the Choose Your Own Adventure craze, and it cleaves tight to many of the genre's standards, like numbered sections that come with choices at the end. As a reader, you ping back and forth through the book following your instincts, and probably keeping a finger or two marking previous choices for the moments in which your instincts fail.

FGO Announces Changes to Battle System at 7th Anniversary

1 year 9 months ago

fgo 7th anniversary

During the July 31, 2022 live-stream to commemorate the 7th anniversary of FGO, Lasengle revealed some upcoming updates to the Japanese version of the game. These updates include new missions, a change to the battle system, an update to the animations, and a free 5-star Craft Essence. For the Craft Essence, you can able to choose one from seven. Kaleidoscope will be one of the choices. [Thanks, Famitsu!]

One of the major changes to the battle system is a buff to the Quick cards. Choosing a Quick card first in a Chain will buff every card's Critical Star generation, as opposed to the first one. Quick Chains also now give 20 Critical Stars. For reference, Quick Chains used to grant 10 critical stars. As well, if you form a Chain with a card from each type, it will cause a Mighty Chain. If you form a Quick, Buster, and Arts Chain with the same Servant, it will cause a Mighty Brave Chain. These Chains increase the performance of your cards.

A final change to the battle system is that you will be able to use a support Servant’s Noble Phantasm even if you are not friends with that person. This makes it easier for newer players that might have an unappealing Servant lineup to take advantage of fellow players' Servants to get through difficult content. Additionally, maxing out ascensions for your Servants will grant you Crystallized Lore. Crystallized Lore is required to upgrade Servants' skills to the highest level, and is usually only available as a reward from events and challenge quests.

Disco Elysium dev seeks artists with "a love of sci-fi and video games"

1 year 9 months ago

Disco Elysium creator ZA/UM is looking for artists with "a love of sci-fi and video games" and the ability to create "non-earth environments".

As spotted by the eagle-eyed members of the Disco Elysium subreddit, job listings for three new artistic positions at the studio are perhaps hinting what themes and motifs may be apparent in the studio's next game.

Interestingly, fans of the RPG don't necessarily think this marks a big departure for the team, though, especially given "how much time [the creators] have put into cultivating the setting of Disco Elysium".

FGO Gets Tsukihime Alum Archetype Earth for 7th Anniversary

1 year 9 months ago

FGO Tsukihime

It has happened. Fate/Grand Order has added a new and iconic character from Tsukihime to its playable roster. The new Servant is known as Archetype Earth, the first FGO character based on a major Tsukihime cast member. She joins the roster as part of the game's ongoing 7th Anniversary celebration in Japan.

FGO and Tsukihime aren't exactly strangers to each other - both franchises share a conceptual framework and many world-building elements. Until recently, though, Lasengle opted to keep Tsukihime more at arm's length, making only indirect references to its characters. For example, the FGO NPC Sion Eltnam Sokaris is based on the Melty Blood alum Sion Eltnam Atlasia. The playable character Ryougi Shiki is from The Garden of Sinners, a precursor work to Tsukihime.

Mash, Neco-Arc Will Be Free DLC in Melty Blood Type Lumina

1 year 9 months ago

melty blood dlc neco-arc mash

Project Lumina has announced that Neco-Arc and Mash will join the roster of playable characters as DLC in Melty Blood: Type Lumina. They will be available for free in the summer. Project Lumina will reveal the concrete date that players can get Neco-Arc and Mash in the near future. [Thanks, Famitsu!]

These characters were first teased in June 2022. As a reminder, the first two DLC characters (Neco-Arc and Mash) will appear in Summer 2022, and two more will appear in Winter 2022. All four DLC characters will be free.

Neco-Arc is a recurring joke character from Tsukihime. Her identity as an official meme will actually play into her fighting style. She has a lot of moves that can cause random effects, which means players who main her will need to rely on luck and fast thinking.

[gallery columns="1" ids="932930" link="file"]

Mash is the deuteragonist and heroine of Fate/Grand Order, and she is a close-range fighter with her shield. According to the article, she is a beginner-friendly character. Mash can also use her shield to guard herself as she rushes towards the enemy.

[gallery columns="1" ids="932931" link="file"]

Aside from the new DLC characters, there will be an update to the story mode. Aside from new scenarios that will let players experience a ‘boss rush,’ Project Lumina powered up the story sequences. There will be 2D pixel art characters moving on the screen to act out what is happening in the story.

PlayStation 3: chasing the 1080p dream, part four - Gran Turismo 6 and the 2D renaissance

1 year 9 months ago

It's the last chapter in one of DF Retro's most expansive projects yet. Across every Sunday this month, we've taken a look at 1080p gaming on Sony's controversial PlayStation 3. We've looked at the beginnings of the full HD dream from Sony's initial marketing claims, through to the late 2006 launch. We've seen triumph and disaster, along with a gradual metamorphosis, with 1080p coming into its own on smaller scale projects with less advanced visuals - punctuated by the arrival of stereoscopic 3D, requiring higher pixel counts, providing a backdoor to further 1080p support for the 'Triple'. In this final chapter, we cover the years 2013 to 2015 - a period of transition as the difficult PS3 era yields to the juggernaut success of PlayStation 4.

2013 proves to be an intriguing year for 1080p gaming for Chad Warden's favourite console and it starts off with the arrival of the HD remaster of Zone of the Enders 2 - or rather, its second arrival. Originally released in a sub-optimal form at 720p with missing effects and dire performance, Konami took the remarkable step of recommissioning the project, handing it over to technology masterminds Hexadrive - an HD remaster of an HD remaster, if you like. What we got was a game that more fully utilised the PlayStation 3's SPUs, resulting in a 1280x1080 masterpiece, with full 1920x1080 vector work. It's a fascinating story that was also one of John Linneman's first pieces of work for Digital Foundry. The only regret with this one is that Konami didn't let Hexadrive loose on the original ZOE HD remaster, which isn't particularly great.

Looks like new Resident Evil content is coming to Dead By Daylight

1 year 9 months ago

It looks like Dead By Daylight has more Resident Evil content on the way.

Whilst not formally confirmed by either developer Behaviour Interactive nor Resident Evil rights holder, Capcom, credible DBD leaker DBDLeaks has shared some very convincing assets, including images of the icons, outfits, charms, dialogue lines, and character biographies for Albert Wesker, Rebecca Chambers, and Ada Wong.

Wesker - called "The Mastermind" - will be a playable Killer, and you'll be able to jump into the shoes of Ada and Rebecca as Survivors. While their perks are apparently yet to be finalised, DBDLeaks has shared what they say are Wesker's perks: Superior Anatomy, Awakened Awareness, and Terminus, which collectively allow Wesker to vault faster, see the auras of other Survivors whilst carrying one, and cause Survivors to be "permanently Broken when the exit gates are open".

Melty Blood: Type Lumina Content Will Appear in PSO2 New Genesis

1 year 9 months ago

Melty Blood Type Lumina content coming to Phantasy Star Online 2 PSO2 New Genesis

PSO2: New Genesis will have new crossover content from Melty Blood: Type Lumina. Type-Moon made the announcement on the second day of Fate/Grand Order 7th Anniversary Festival, where it also published new information about its other games.

Type-Moon did not specify what kind of Melty Blood content will appear in Sega's PSO2: New Genesis. But when crossover content from other franchises appears in the latter MMORPG, it usually consists of avatar parts and accessories that let players replicate characters from the former. The items will be available in the gacha-like Scratch Ticket that usually runs for four weeks after launch.

Melty Blood: Type Lumina will be the second external franchise to bring crossover content into PSO2: New Genesis. Sega previously announced that it will release the first crossover avatar parts modeled after Hololive Production VTubers on August 24, 2022. In its roadmap for late 2022, Sega revealed plans to release more crossover Scratches with an external game title—which fits the description for Melty Blood—in October 2022, and an anime show in November 2022.

Watch a Bunch of Super-Cute Pikachus do the Pikachu Ondo Dance in New Pokemon Video

1 year 9 months ago

If you love Pokemon and feel in a summery mood, the official Japanese Pokemon Kids TV channel has a treat in store for you.

We get a new video featuring a troupe of cute Pikachus performing the “Pikachu Ondo Dance.”

If you’re not familiar with Japanese folk traditions, this is a dance performed with Ondo music usually associated with the Obon celebration (the tradition to honor the spirit of the ancestors in mid-August) and summer festivals.

In fact, the Pikachus wear the traditional hachimaki headband that people wear at summer festivals, and dance among the typical lanterns and in front of the Yagura stage pretty much as you’d see at this kind of celebration.

A second video was also released including a tutorial in case you’d like to learn the Pikachu Ondo Dance yourself. Unfortunately, that’s exclusively in Japanese, but it shouldn’t be too difficult to learn with a bit of effort.

You can enjoy both videos below.

Skull and Bones is "not a narrative game"

Ubisoft's upcoming pirate game Skull and Bones is "not a narrative-driven game".

That's according to game director Ryan Barnard, who revealed to True Achievements that whilst it will have "narrative pieces", focus on your player's own story and has "an underlying story", the adventure will not be "narrative-driven".

"Skull and Bones is not a narrative-driven game," Barnard explains. “We have narrative pieces - in the game, you'll meet important NPCs called Kingpins which have their own stories that you'll learn as you develop rapport with them by taking on contracts with them. There is an underlying story to the game with which we build the entire world lore, but that's not the main focus. We want players to create their own stories and be able to choose the type of pirate they want to be.

Is The Boondocks an Anime?

1 year 9 months ago

The Boondocks had a short run on Adult Swim, ending with only 55 episodes. However, a testament to just how popular and influential the show was and is, Adult Swim still airs reruns to this day. After all these years, fans of the show and anime elitists keep the flames of debate lit by asking one seemingly simple question: is The Boondocks an anime?

Is the Boondocks an Anime?

Ask any fan of cartoons what anime means to them and you’d get a wide range of answers. However, by using Twinfinite’s definition of what makes an anime an anime, we’ve determined that The Boondocks is definitely an anime.

It’s character-driven, thought-provoking, and despite the setting being a suburban neighborhood, The Boondocks has a surprising number of fight scenes inspired by shows like Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, and Naruto.

Will There Be a Toradora! Season 2 – Is It Canceled?

1 year 9 months ago

Earlier this year, fans were ecstatic to hear some news about Toradora! during the anime’s 15th Anniversary. But, could this celebration mean a second season for the anime? The only way to find out is by examining the show’s latest updates and rumors about its cancelation.

Will There Be a Toradora! Season 2?

Judging by how the anime ended, it doesn’t seem like there will be a Season 2 of Toradora! because everyone’s story has already wrapped up in the first installment. Moreover, there isn’t much source material from the manga to further develop another season.

Despite all these factors, it is possible for a resurgence of the show since the fanbase continues to grow even today, especially after Netflix added the anime to its collection.

Is Toradora! Canceled?

With no confirmation from the creators or J.C. Staff, Toradora! has not received a cancelation announcement and could potentially get a new OVA that fans have wanted. In addition, the anime has recently celebrated its 15th anniversary by releasing a video of the main cast.

You can check out this exclusive debut of the Toradora! 15th Anniversary, as shown here:

A lot of the No Sweat Summer quests haven’t exactly adhered to a beach party theme. Turns out that ringing doorbells and tossing boogie bombs aren’t inherently summer activities. This next quest will be bringing back the beach party spirit, but you will have to hunt down the objects needed. Here’s where to kick a beach ball and a giant beach ball in Fortnite No Sweat Summer.

For this quest you will have to kick both a normal and a giant beach ball. Here are the map locations of all the different beach ball locations. There aren’t any indicators of what marker leads to what sized beach ball.
