Give in to your own Mouthful Mode and inhale a real life Kirby cake

1 year 9 months ago

Kirby and the Forgotten Land was a colourful and welcome splash of fun on its release in March. One of its most adorable features (of which there are many) was the ever-evolving Waddle Dee Town, which has its own café.

At this café, you can purchase a selection of eats to help Kirby on his quest to free the Waddle Dees, including the Car-Mouth Cake. This cake will cost Kirby 20 coins and will recover some health. But, let's be honest, its reviving properties are not what we really love about it. What we really love is the fact that it is an adorable, edible Carby.

Now, the Kirby Café in Tokyo and Hakata in Japan has updated its menus to include a real Car-Mouth Cake for us to enjoy (I mean, if we are ever in the area).

Wreckfest's Switch port impresses - even against PS5 and Xbox Series X

1 year 9 months ago

Wreckfest is an all-out brawl of a racing game. Races are full-contact, with track designs that encourage massive shunts as cars criss-cross and shove other vehicles into barriers. Made by Flatout dev Bugbear Entertainment, Wreckfest represents a long-awaited return to form for demolition derby games. After debuting on PC in 2018, it's since crossed over to current and last-gen consoles - and this week, the Nintendo Switch. Today, we'll be taking a look at Wreckfest across all console formats, with a particular emphasis on Switch. Just how well can this game scale from Nintendo's hybrid console all the way to PS5?

Wreckfest's claim to fame is its destruction. Vehicle damage is fully simulated here, with cars that realistically crumple and disintegrate as they collide. Crashes leave bits of fender and sheet metal strewn over the track, and often send pieces of concrete barriers or tire walls into the air as well. The damage system is backed by a solid handling model, with weighty-feeling vehicles that demand care when navigating corners - but some arcade characteristics that prevent mistakes from being too punishing.

Technically speaking Wreckfest is a good-looking but not especially ambitious title, outside of its superb car damage model. Cars are highly detailed, there's plenty of trackside geometry, and pop-in is minimal - but indirectly lit shots often look quite flat, car reflections are quite basic and anti-aliasing is absent. It's a slightly unusual feature set, which is perhaps explained by its initial development in 2012 by a smaller team on a custom engine, but it turns into a winning formula for Switch: conservative rendering tech plus a custom, tweakable engine.

One Piece Odyssey Dev Diary Goes Over Its Concepts and Gameplay

1 year 9 months ago

One Piece Odyssey Dev Diary Goes Over Its Concepts and Gameplay

Bandai Namco shared a One Piece Odyssey Dev Diary starring Producer Katsuaki Tsuzuki. This time, the focus is to go over its development. He mentioned things like how its “let’s travel to the heart of memories” messaging is critical to the game and the concept. All of this goes on while new One Piece Odyssey gameplay footage appears.

Things begin with Tsuzuki discussing the initial reception to the announcement. After that, he mentioned that development began five years ago when One Piece Warriors 4 was being promoted. Once the framework was set, Eiichiro Oda was asked to contribute character designs. Oda’s message noted he’d consulted and provided art for it about three years ago. Tsuzuki also noted scenario production began during the manga’s Whole Cake Island arc.

Here’s the full One Piece Odyssey Dev Diary. It begins with an introduction, before moving onto character design, the development approach, and its features. At the 5:40 mark, details about the RPG gameplay elements in One Piece Odyssey show up.

In case someone missed it, the last update went over one of the original characters. People will meet Lim in the game.

Sea of Stars Has Been Delayed to 2023

1 year 9 months ago

Sabotage Studio has announced that it would be delaying Sea of Stars from its original 2022 release window to sometime in 2023.

“As we are closing in on a very big milestone the road to launch become clearer, and we find ourselves here with a large body of text and our logos at the bottom,” Sabotage says in a statement. “Keeping in mind our two main priorities—quality of life for our team and quality of the finished game—we can now confirm that Sea of Tars will be released in 2023.”

“We understand waiting is a big ask, and want to sincerely thank you community for the overwhelming support and positive vibes,” continues Sabotage. “In the meantime, we are looking at options to get a playable slice out to everyone this year.”

Sea of Stars is a prequel to Sabotage’s previous game, 2018’s The Messenger. However, Sea of Stars occupies a completely different genre in that it is a turn-based RPG rather than a sidescrolling beat ‘em up like The Messenger was.

Sea of Stars was first announced in 2020 and was given a 2022 release window last December in a Nintendo Direct. However, players will now have to wait a bit longer for it to come out.

W3itch.io even described itself as a “free-as-freedom open marketplace for independent game creators inspired by Itch and Gitcoin”. New Genshin Impact Live Wallpaper Stars Itto

1 year 9 months ago

HoYoVerse shared a new, free Genshin Impact live wallpaper, and it features Arataki Itto hanging out in Inazuma.

There's a new Genshin Impact live wallpaper, and this time it features Arataki Itto. The new freebie is available via the N0va Desktop app. People can download it and use it with their PCs and Android tablets. However, it does not show up as an option on phones. (The most recent live update there involves Childe.)

The Itto Genshin Impact live wallpaper might look familiar. That's because it is based upon a recent video HoYoVerse released. The same scene shows up during the Hanamizaka’s Aspirations EP. Itto is hanging out in front of the Raiden Shogun's home. He's also wielding the club he uses during his Royal Descent: Behold, Itto the Evil! Elemental Burst.

It's been a while since the N0va Desktop app added a new Genshin Impact live wallpaper. One with Zhongli in Liyue appeared in March 2022. Another involved Ayaka in Inazuma.

FFVII Remake Shinra Building Floor 63 Recreational Facility Art Shared

There’s new FFVII Remake concept art, and this time it focuses on the Shinra building floor 63 recreational facility. This is a space people can visit in both the first part of the remake and the original game. In each entry, the function is the same. It’s essentially where Shinra employees can stop to relax and have something to eat. In FFVII Remake, it is also home to a Combat Simulator Lounge.

First, here are two images going over the space. In both versions of FFVII, a tree is a central fixture in the Shinra building floor 63 space. While the concept art shows it being free in the middle of an area, next to a coffee kiosk and food court, the final image shows it encased in a greenhouse of sorts in FFVII Remake.

Meet the modder who hacked AMD's new upscaling tech into Cyberpunk 2077

1 year 9 months ago

Earlier this week, news broke of a modder that hacked AMD's FSR 2.0 temporal upscaling technology into Cyberpunk 2077, allowing users of non-RTX graphics cards the chance to play the game at higher frame-rates with substantially better visual quality than with FSR 1.0 upscaling. That's massive for owners of AMD GPUs, and the mod even works beautifully on Steam Deck.

We contacted the mod's creator, the gloriously named PotatoOfDoom1337, to find out exactly how it works - and whether it means that FSR 2.0 will soon be available in a tonne of existing games. Here's the interview, edited lightly for clarity. Enjoy!

What's your background in programming and game modding? On NexusMods, it looks like you've only been creating mods since April last year?

343 Reveals Halo Infinite's Co-Op Beta Launch Date And Details How Cooperative Play Works

1 year 9 months ago

As previously promised, Halo Infinite’s long-awaited campaign co-op takes its first steps towards launch, thanks to a network beta flight scheduled for July.

Much like the multiplayer beta that proceeded Infinite’s launch last fall, this co-op beta, which runs July 11 to July 22, allows registered players to tackle the entire campaign alongside a buddy to ensure everything works as planned for the full rollout. Because this is a new campaign build that players must download, 343 states that no previous story progress carries over, so players will be starting from scratch. Progress made during the beta will also not transfer back to the retail version.

In a Halo Waypoint blog post, 343 lead software engineer Isaac Bender and lead world designer John Mulkey discussed the co-op mode’s features. A fireteam of four players can create separate campaign saves for co-op, and progress – such as completed missions, acquired collectibles, equipment, upgrades, and achievements – count toward both players’ individual saves. That means you don’t need to be the Fireteam leader to retain your team’s accomplishments. For upgrade cores, if one player collects one, then the entire team gets it. However, players spend cores individually.

Take An Early Look At Skate's Fluid Movements And Awesome Bails

1 year 9 months ago

You'll soon have the chance to play EA's highly anticipated Skate sequel, but not in the way you would expect. Developer Full Circle and publisher Electronic Arts are looking for players who want to playtest the game and provide feedback on its development. You can sign up for this "insider" program here. As EA notes, you cannot share your videos or screenshots from your play sessions.

If you are curious what Skate currently looks like or what you can expect from the gameplay, EA has released a trailer with the appropriate title "Still working on it." The first few clips focus on bails, which must have been captured early in development given how rough the animations are. As the trailer moves on, the animations smooth out and the series' skating realism returns and is on display in a handful of awesome sequences. Full Circle also looks to be upping the scale of the challenges through some wild clips featuring impossible grind opportunities and huge ramps. Most of these clips are lack any kind of texturing or lighting and truly give us a look at how games are made.

Regardless of where it is at in development, this trailer gives a fun look at a series that never should have left us. Skate is alsmost back and it looks like it's going to be a blast.

Halo Infinite Campaign Co-op Beta Drops July 11

1 year 9 months ago

At last, it looks like Halo Infinite is nearing its long-promised campaign co-op. 343 Industries has announced that a two-week-long beta preview of the feature is happening at last, running from July 11 through July 22.

The beta will include the entire campaign, and is available to anyone who either owns Halo Infinite or has Xbox Game Pass. Console players who are interested in trying it out will need to join the Xbox Insider Program, and the beta on Steam will only be available to Halo Insiders who are signed up for the program by July 5.

Players will need to download the campaign build and start a new playthrough, and won't be able to carry any existing progress over. Beta progress will also not transfer back to the retail version of the game. However, this is only for the beta, and when the full feature releases players will not need an isolated co-op save, and co-op progress will count toward a regular playthrough for all players involved if so desired.

According to lead world designer John Mulkey, this is how it will work in the full release:

"The way we are handling this is through something we internally refer to as 'No Spartan Left Behind'. When players join the Fireteam and choose their save slots to play on, the game aggregates the states of all missions across those saves and sets up a world state in which any missions completed by all Fireteam members are marked as complete while any missions not completed by all are marked as incomplete."

Additionally, cross-platform play will be fully supported including with xCloud, and co-op experience should be the same regardless of platform.

Interview: Preparing Dragon Quest Builders Mobile Port

1 year 9 months ago

Siliconera spoke with Dragon Quest Builders Producer Yuki Furukawa to learn more about the mobile port, possible updates, and its DLC.

Back in 2016, Square Enix created a Dragon Quest spin-off that blended creative Minecraft-style elements into the formula. Since then, Dragon Quest Builders showed up on multiple platforms and spawned a sequel. Now in 2022, Dragon Quest Builders is back again on mobile devices. To learn more about the latest version, Siliconera got in touch with Producer Yuki Furukawa.

Jenni Lada: How difficult was it to prepare Dragon Quest Builders for mobile devices? What was the most challenging part of the porting process?

Yuki Furukawa: The most challenging parts of creating the port were the sections involving the controls. The console version of Dragon Quest Builders is played with a controller, so for mobile devices, there were various issues such as fingers covering up a part of the screen and the lowered visibility of the screen due to its smaller size. Despite that, we had to achieve
controllability that delivers an experience as good as the one using a controller, so we made and remade many prototypes. We were able to arrive at its current form by receiving many ideas and suggestions for improvement from Producers Takuma Shiraishi and Noriyoshi Fujimoto and Yuji Horii.
