Pride Week: It's Dragon Age creator David Gaider!

1 year 10 months ago

Hello! Once again Eurogamer is marking Pride Month - on this, its 50th anniversary year in the UK - with a week of features celebrating the intersection of queer culture and gaming. This afternoon, Bertie talks to the veteran BioWare writer who created Dragon Age and the studio's first exclusively gay party member, Dorian. World, meet David Gaider.

And while we have you here, if you've been eagerly awaiting a restock of Eurogamer's Pride t-shirts, we're happy to report that more - in two ravishing variants - are now available for purchase. All profits will be split between LGBTQIA+ charities Mermaids and Mind Out.

I don't think David Gaider needs much of an introduction. He, affectionately, is mister Dragon Age. He was the one tasked with dreaming up the entire world. We talk about it in this episode of One-to-one. BioWare's James Ohlen apparently gave Gaider a historic atlas and an "off you go".

1 year 10 months ago

Ron Gilbert's latest foray into the swashbuckling world of Guybrush Threepwood and co is going to be making its way to the Nintendo Switch as well as PC.

Return to Monkey Island is slated to release sometime this year, and come to consoles first via Nintendo Switch. We have been given some nice titbits of information about its upcoming release, including that it will be starting off at an amusement park (where Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge concluded), but the team has been keeping its cards close to its chest in terms of story and trailer reveals. Well, that was until now.

Today's Nintendo Direct, gave us our first look at some of the game's action, including piratical sword fights, explosive nautical combat, and what appears to be Guybrush in some kind of court (bodes well!). We also got to see some returning faces such as Elaine Marley, LeChuck, Murray the talking skull and Wally (to name but a few).

When Does RPG Time: The Legend of Wright Come Out?

1 year 10 months ago

The Nintendo Direct had plenty of big games to show off, along with some surprise announcements. It’s been almost a year since RPG Time: The Legend of Wright was last shown off, and news of the game has been largely silent until this release date reveal. Here’s when RPG Time: The Legend of Wright will be coming out.

When RPG Time: The Legend of Wright Will Come Out

RPG Time: The Legend of Wright will be headed to Nintendo Switch, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC on Aug. 18.

It’s impressive when you look at the very stylized papercraft visuals and remember that the developer, DESK WORKS, is only a two-person studio.

The game has been through a couple delays to get to this point. The release date has been pushed back every time the game has been brought to shows like E3 or Tokyo Game Show in the past. When RPG Time: The Legend of Wright was first announced at E3 2019, it was said to be getting a 2020 release date. It obviously missed that and was later shown off at Tokyo Game Show 2021 with improved visuals. At that time, it was given a release date of winter 2021.

Seeing as this is the first time we’ve gotten an actual date for RPG Time: The Legend of Wright, this might mean it will stick the landing.

Railgrade, a New Railroad Simulator, Releases This Fall

1 year 10 months ago

During today’s Nintendo Direct Mini: Partner Showcase, we got a gameplay trailer for Railgrade, an upcoming railroad management simulator from Minakata Dynamics and Epic Games. The two-minute-long trailer showcases many of the features that will be available in the game.

Railgrade takes place in an off-world industrial colony owned by a chemical corporation whose purpose is to harvest resources. It’s up to you to oversee industrial progress on this planet with trains as transport in order to restore the colony’s economy.

The gameplay is exactly what you’d expect from a railroad management sim; you build railroads to deliver raw materials and other valuable goods to and from various ports. Of course, strategy is important as you build the railroads through each mission.

There looks to be plenty of customization options for trains such as engine types that have their own costs and benefits.

Railgrade will release this fall on the Nintendo Switch and on PC. You can watch the official gameplay trailer below and read more details about it on the game’s official website right here.

1 year 10 months ago

Announced during today’s Nintendo Direct, RPG Time: The Legend of Wright will be releasing Aug. 18 for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. That’s right, despite the announcement coming during a Nintendo Direct, the game will be multiplatform.

The adorable papercraft style RPG Time: The Legend of Wright was first shown off in 2019. At that time it claimed to be coming in 2020. As that release date didn’t work out, the game went back into development and the art style has greatly changed since. The last we heard about it was at Tokyo Game Show in 2021, and then it claimed to be coming winter of last year. Seeing as this time we have an actual, direct date, that should hopefully be a good sign.

Surreal Puzzler, Lorelei and The Laser Eyes, Announced for Switch & PC

1 year 10 months ago

During today’s Nintendo Direct online showcase, developer Simogo Games smuggled in a reveal trailer for their eerie puzzle-adventure game, Lorelei and The Laser Eyes, which is scheduled to launch “first for consoles on Nintendo Switch” and PC in 2023. From the verbiage used by Nintendo, it appears that the game will launch on other consoles, too, but will release first on Switch.

Go ahead and take a gander at the new announcement trailer down below:

As you can see in the footage above, Lorelei and The Laser Eyes appears to be a stylish and atmospheric puzzler that boasts an eye-catching monochrome art-style. Poised as a “modern take” on the puzzle-adventure games of yesteryear, the title features old-school adventure game mechanics but with a modernised twist.

The game is ostensibly a sequel to 2019’s Sayonara Wild Hearts, which is an uber-stylish action experience that sees you riding a motorbike through different dimensions, all to the beat of a hypnotic synth-wave soundtrack. Lorelei and The Laser Eyes, on the other hand, is a bit of a departure from its action-oriented predecessor.

For more information about the game, here’s a general overview courtesy of Simogo Games:

When Does Harvestella Come Out on Nintendo Switch & PC? Answered

1 year 10 months ago

Harvestella is a new life sim RPG from Square Enix combining the farming gameplay of the likes of Stardew Valley and Harvest Moon with RPG-style combat where you’ll battle against monsters. If you’ve been looking for a meaty life sim experience to sink your teeth into, then chances are you’re wondering when does Harvestella come out on Nintendo Switch?

The game looks to be a little different from the usual farming life sim by including a new season called the Quietus which will wreak havoc on your farm and home. You’ll need to put in just as much effort trying to find a way to prevent the Quietus from ruining all of your hard work and livelihood before it’s too late.

Harvestella Release Date on Nintendo Switch

Harvestella is coming to the Nintendo Switch on Nov. 4 and will also release on Windows PC via Steam on the same day.

Is Harvestella Coming to Xbox Series X|S or PS5?

At the time of writing, no, Harvestella is only currently slated to release on the Nintendo Switch and PC.

This doesn’t mean that the game will never come to the platforms, but it’s likely that Square Enix doesn’t have any plans it is willing to officially announce at the current time.

Here’s Yet Another Look at Minecraft Legends’ Overworld & Enemies From the Nintendo Direct

1 year 10 months ago

We got our first look at Minecraft Legends a couple weeks back, during the Xbox + Bethesda showcase, and we got another glimpse of the game at the Nintendo Direct today. You can check out the new trailer down below:

While we didn’t get all that much time with the game, we did get a closer look at the overworld itself as well as a glimpse of the enemies that we’ll get to face. It’s certainly a far cry from the usual crafting and survival loop of the original Minecraft, but for players who have been invested in the IP and wanted more out of it in terms of story and narrative, this could be a good one to look forward to.

Minecraft Legends is set to be released for PC and consoles sometime next year.

Sonic Frontiers' Cyber Space Dimension Features Traditional Platforming Stages

1 year 10 months ago

Sonic Frontiers’ “open zone” format has been the centerpiece of discussion, and for a good reason. Dropping Sonic in an open-world style environment gives fans a new, bigger arena to roam around and go fast in. However, traditionalists may be happy to learn that Frontiers includes standard, linear platforming stages hidden in unlockable areas called Cyber Space. I got to play one of these stages during my demo during Summer Game Fest Play Days a couple of weeks ago to get a handle on how these self-contained levels compliment Frontiers' exploration-heavy gameplay.

As seen during today's Nintendo Direct Mini, while exploring the open world (which you can read about in my previous preview), I collected special items called Portal Gears. You can obtain these gears by solving puzzles and completing other types of challenges throughout Starfall Islands. Presenting them at stone landmarks resembling a throne establishes a connection to the Cyber Space, a digital dimension Sega describes as a “game within a game.” Cyber Space treats players to fast-paced platforming stages fans of 3D Sonic games will be intimately familiar with, providing a more focused diversion to open zone wandering.

Portal 1 And Portal 2 Arrive On Switch Today

1 year 10 months ago

The previously announced Portal: Companion Collection gathers the two acclaimed first-person puzzle games into one bundle for Switch. While we already knew it was coming sometime this year, today's Nintendo Direct Mini presentation news revealed that we'll be able to play two of the greatest puzzle games of all time on Switch beginning today.

Portal was released in 2007 as a part of The Orange Box, a bundle that gathered Half-Life 2, Half-Life 2: Episode One, Half-Life 2: Episode Two, Team Fortress 2, and Portal. Initially considered a unique side dish to the main courses that populated the rest of the bundle, Portal quickly gained popularity for its clever design, mind-bending puzzles, and dark humor. In 2011, Valve released a full-fledged sequel, Portal 2. This standalone title added several new mechanics, extended playtime, a more involved story exploring the backstories of Aperture Science and GlaDOS, and a separate co-op multiplayer campaign.

Both Portal titles are considered among the greatest video games ever made and are available today on Nintendo Switch.

One will be a Battle 64 64-player battle royal. This will be like the one in Super Bomberman R Online. A new Castle mode will appear, tasking one side with defending a castle and building up barricades and the other with attacking the castle to take it and its treasure. Standard and 3v3 Grand Prix battle modes will appear too.

Here’s the first trailer for Super Bomberman R 2.

Check out the trailer from the Japanese edition of the June 28, 2022 Nintendo Direct Mini broadcast. As the series is known as Monster Farm in Japan, the game's formal title is Ultra Kaiju Monster Farm.

In the game, players will establish their own massive farm and build it with the help of various Kaiju monsters from the Ultraman series. In keeping with Monster Rancher tradition, Ultra Kaiju Monster Rancher players will recruit new Kaiju by putting random media into the game. However, since the Switch doesn't have a disc drive to take music CDs or DVDs, the recruitment methods are all-digital. Players can search pieces of music by title or artist to generate new Kaiju. They'll also be able to use IC "smart" cards used in transit systems (like Suica or Icoca), or the NFC chips in smartphones, for Kaiju recruitment. Classic Ultraman Kaiju like Zetton, Gomora, and Alien Baltan were shown. Players will train their Kaiju to improve their stats, have them race rivals, build Ultra-size snow sculptures, and even do some sparring. They can also fuse Kaiju to find the ultimate monster.

Xbox Games With Gold for July 2022 Revealed

1 year 10 months ago

Microsoft has announced that July 2022's Games with Gold are Beasts of Maravilla Island, Relicta, Thrillville: Off the Rails, and Torchlight.

As revealed on Xbox Wire, the four Games with Gold offerings will be available to anyone with Xbox Live Gold or Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, with Beasts of Maravilla Island and Thrillville: Off the Rails available starting on June 1.

Beasts of Maravilla Island is a Pokémon Snap-esque game where players take on the role of a wildlife photographer exploring a mysterious island. Players will solve puzzles and interact with the wild and wacky creatures of Maravilla island in the two to three hour adventure.

Also available on July 1 but only until July 15 is Thrillville: Off the Rails, an Xbox 360 game from 2007 that lets players manage their own theme park and build their own rollercoasters. Though it's relatively simple overall, the myriad mini-games sprinkled in led IGN to call it "a fun little package" in our 7/10 review.

Available later in the month, on July 16, is Relicta, a first-person, physics-based puzzle game where players must creatively combine magnetism and gravity in order to proceed. Taking on the role of a physicist stranded on a derelict moon base, solving puzzles is the only way to save your daughter and perhaps all of humanity in these eerie sci-fi adventure.
