RimWorld updated with Steam Deck support

2 years 1 month ago

A new RimWorld patch has brought "full support" for Steam Deck, updating the interface for Valve's handheld gaming PC. The excellent sci-fi colony-building sandbox is the sort of game I would most like to potter around the house with, maybe play a few minutes on the pot, so that's nice. Not that I would take a Steam Deck to the toilet. But in theory. Look, I'm just pretending this is about me so I don't have to accuse you of anything.

Gran Turismo 7’s First Patch Begins To Fix Its Launch Issues

2 years 1 month ago

Dozens of changes have been made to Gran Turismo 7 in its first post-launch patch.

The version 1.11 update seeks to steer the game back on track following a shaky launch that saw developer Polyphony Digital reduce the number of rewards players could earn.

The patch addresses this directly by letting players earn more rewards in the latter half of the World Circuit, for clearing circuits in Gold or Bronze results, and in Lobbies and Daily races. Polyphony Digital has also "adjusted" the rewards for Arcade and Custom races and raised the maximum cap for earned in-game credits to 100 million.

Three new tracks - Le Mans, Sardegna, and Tokyo Expressway - have also been added to the World Circuit alongside several new one hour endurance races that have a high pay-out.

The patch brings several other minor changes (that can be found in the official notes) but it remains to be seen if this update will satisfy disgruntled players. Fans were most upset about a previous update that rebalanced rewards. The change made shortly after launch meant players essentially had to play more for the same rewards or pay up to $40 for a single car.

AC Milan will put the awful eFootball logo on its training kit next season

AC Milan will put the awful eFootball logo on its training kit, Konami has announced.

The logo, which looks like a rip-off of the euro sign, will be on the famous Italian club's training gear from the beginning of next season.

The players wear the training kit during sessions at the Milanello Sports Centre and before every fixture in domestic and international competitions. They of course wear the proper AC Milan kit while they're playing matches. Konami hasn't got its eFootball logo on that - yet.

How Two Point Campus twists the mundane with trademark jokes and relationships

There's a childlike wonder to Two Point Campus. With its collection of fantastical lessons, it indulges those daydreams of 'what would you like to be when you grow up?' and let's you play those out in silly fashion.

"Kids have these great ideas of what they're going to become and you never become that, you never really do become someone who rides a rocket ship to the moon," says Gary Carr, game director at Two Point Studios.

"And in this game we said why not? Why can't you be fighting dragons? And why can't you be flying rocket ships or building robots?"

Chinatown Detective Agency review: stylish cyberpunk meets history homework

2 years 1 month ago

Have you ever encountered something that you know some people are going to absolutely love, but others will hate to their very core? What's a good metaphor for that? If only there were a food product that had built an entire brand around the concept. I guess we'll never know. But Chinatown Detective Agency, a beautiful, pixely, point and click puzzle game set in a cyberpunk future Singapore, has what I predict will be a pretty polarising central feature, and that is real time historical research.

Overwatch Removes Russian Symbolism From Zarya Skins

2 years 1 month ago

Editor's Note: The war in Ukraine is an ongoing, painful and emotive topic. IGN urges community members to be respectful when engaging in conversation around this subject and does not endorse harassment of any kind.

Blizzard has quietly removed the Z symbol from skins in Overwatch following the icon's use during the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

Zarya, a Russian character, previously featured the letter Z on her Arctic and Siberian Front skins but these were removed in the latest Anniversary Remix update, as reported by Polygon.

The%20Z%20was%20removed%20from%20some%20Zarya%20skins%20in%20Overwatch%20(Credit%3A%20Blizzard)

The Z symbol has been used in Russian propaganda to show support for the country's invasion of Ukraine, appearing on tanks and other vehicles before entering mass media at the beginning of March.

Russian gymnast Ivan Kuliak is being investigated by The International Gymnastics Federation for wearing a Z on his chest while competing in Qatar while a group of terminally ill children were encouraged to pose in the shape of a Z to show support for Russia's invasion.

Ghost Recon Sequel Reportedly in Development

2 years 1 month ago

A new Ghost Recon game is reportedly in development at Ubisoft.

Sources told Kotaku that "codename OVER" will be the series' latest and could be released in fiscal year 2023, meaning sometime next year.

This is a separate project from Ghost Recon Frontline, a free to play battle royale that saw a delay within a week of being revealed last October.

Kotaku also reported that development on Frontline is expectedly shaky as the project is undergoing a full reset with no launch date anytime soon.

Mumblings of Ghost Recon "OVER" came soon after Ubisoft announced it was ending content support for its previous game, Ghost Recon Breakpoint. The codename Project OVER had also been previously spotted in a GeForce Now leak last year.

Having launched in October 2019, Breakpoint wasn't wonderfully received but had more than two years of continuous support from Ubisoft before its final piece of new content was released last November.

Resident Evil Village Reportedly Almost Had Mermaid Monsters

2 years 1 month ago

An earlier version of Resident Evil Village reportedly had mermaid-style monsters.

A series of tweets from known Resident Evil leaker Dusk Golem claims that the swamp area of the game once featured mermaid-like enemies before it underwent a major rework.

Dusk Golem claimed that in this early version the player had to traverse through the swamp, choosing between walking on land or wading through water, while being stalked by "a slimy-sorta Tyrant-like creature" that was likely Moreau, the area's final boss.

The mermaids would hunt protagonist Ethan while he was in the water and stun him on land, leaving the player wide open for an attack from the stalker.

Dusk Golem also said this version of the sequence had "weird ritual type stuff" with Lycans and "Witches", though these were essentially clones of Dimitriscu's vampiric daughters that Ethan fights earlier in the game.

Plans were allegedly changed for this portion of the game as developer Capcom didn't have the time or budget to bring it up to a high standard, instead opting to cut a lot of content.

Epic Games and LEGO Are Working Together To Create a Child-Safe Metaverse Space

2 years 1 month ago

Epic Games and The LEGO Group have announced a new collaboration in which the two companies will work together to create a child-friendly space within the metaverse.

The announcement states that "the two companies will team up to build an immersive, creatively inspiring and engaging digital experience for kids of all ages to enjoy together."

The digital space will be governed by three principles agreed upon by LEGO and Epic Games:

  • Protect children’s right to play by making safety and wellbeing a priority.
  • Safeguard children’s privacy by putting their best interests first.
  • Empower children and adults with tools that give them control over their digital experience.

Concrete details about what this "digital experience" will be are not yet available, but Epic promises that it will be family-friendly and provide children with tools that will provide "play opportunities in a safe and positive space."

“Kids enjoy playing in digital and physical worlds and move seamlessly between the two," said LEGO CEO Niels B Christiansen in a statement. "We believe there is huge potential for them to develop life-long skills such as creativity, collaboration and communication through digital experiences. But we have a responsibility to make them safe, inspiring and beneficial for all. Just as we’ve protected children’s rights to safe physical play for generations, we are committed to doing the same for digital play. We look forward to working with Epic Games to shape this exciting and playful future.”

Valorant Mobile Has Entered Testing in China, Leaked Screenshots Reveal

2 years 1 month ago

Riot Games’ announcement of a Valorant mobile project last year has been followed by a long period of silence on the matter, but according to leaked screenshots of what appears to be an early testing phase in China, it seems development has very much been in full swing.

Shared by @DannyINTEL on Twitter, the screenshots show the game running on a mobile device, as well as the Agent select screen and some general menu images. Notably, you can see the UI overlay on the image that shows gameplay, giving us a first glimpse at the control layout.

One of the big questions about a Valorant mobile port has, of course, been the viability of playing a tactical shooter that rewards precision on a touch screen. We’ll have to wait and see how it plays in practice, but so far it all looks pretty standard in comparison to other FPS mobile titles.

Here’s a look at all of the screenshots so far compiled by @DannyINTEL:

Upgrade your PC with 16GB of Crucial Ballistix DDR4-3200 for less than £50

2 years 1 month ago

When it comes to PC gaming, RAM is an oft-overlooked part of the equation. Your graphics card and CPU are the most important determiners of performance, but fast RAM helps speed up anything CPU-limited - including PC gaming on a 1080p monitor. If you're running slow or high-latency memory from a few years back, then upgrading to a faster kit can be worthwhile.

That's why we wanted to let you know that Crucial is currently selling a 16GB kit of their Ballistix DDR4-3200 CL16 memory for £46.79, compared to £58.28 for the same kit on Amazon. It's rare to see 16GB of RAM below £50, especially some from a major manufacturer like Crucial, so this is a pretty outstanding deal. The lowest price we can see for a similar spec RAM kit is £56, and that's from a much less well known brand.

Rated at 3200MT/s CL16, this kit is precisely in the sweet spot when it comes to price versus performance. When going below 3200MT/s, you tend to lose performance pretty rapidly, whereas going beyond around 3600MT/s you start running into diminishing returns, with very marginal gains and much higher prices. There are still tons of PCs operating with 2133MT/s, 2400MT/s or 2666MT/s memory, and they're leaving a bit of performance on the table. To check your memory speed, you can use Task Manager's performance tab, or programs like Speccy or CPU-Z.

Details are thin on the ground, but it feels like a major commitment for Lego's digital future, and a huge win for Epic Games to be entrusted with the notoriously child-safe brand.

A New Ghost Recon Game Has Entered Development

2 years 1 month ago

This past Wednesday (April 5) marked the end of Ghost Recon Breakpoint updates. A tweet posted on the game's official Twitter account states, "We will continue to maintain our servers for both Ghost Recon Wildlands and Ghost Recon Breakpoint, and we truly hope you will continue to enjoy the game and have fun playing in solo or co-op with your friends." Despite Breakpoint's end, a new Ghost Recon game has entered development.

According to Kotaku, the next bombastic chapter in Tom Clancy's illustrious military universe is codenamed OVER. The title has reportedly been in the works for over a year now and could launch in 2023. As far as the fandom is concerned, this fast turnaround could be a good thing. Recent Ghost Recon experiences haven't found the same success as other Tom Clancy titles like Rainbow Six and The Division. Breakpoint, for instance, might have alienated its players after Ubisoft implemented its NFT-based Quartz beta into the shooter's cosmetic rotation.

AMD Radeon RX 6500 XT review: a "cheap" graphics card, but at what cost?

2 years 1 month ago

You’d be forgiven for getting excited about the AMD Radeon RX 6500 XT. A brand new RDNA 2 graphics card, with ray tracing support, that’s both easy to find in stock and available at a comparatively approachable £200 / $230? In the midst of a years-long components shortage, exacerbated by all manner of price-gouging bollocks, it’d be entirely understandable if upgrade-starved PC owners went for this like my cat goes for unattended crisp packets. Especially if they’re happy to stick to playing at 1080p.

Alas, the RX 6500 XT isn’t just an inferior low-end option to the Nvidia GeForce RTX 3050 (one of the best graphics cards, and perhaps the outright best for budget builds right now). It’s an offputtingly slow, sometimes bizarrely-designed GPU in general; instead of providing long-overdue relief to a truly fudged hardware market, it ends up feeling like more an attempt to just sell any old second-rate kit to an audience that’s been left desperate for something, anything that’s new and somewhat affordable.

2 years 1 month ago

Developer Cellar Door Games has announced that Rogue Legacy 2, the roguelite sequel to the original 2013 game, will be leaving Early Access and officially launching on April 28. To mark the occasion, the developer is making the original game available for free right now on the Epic Games Store.

"Our goal for Rogue Legacy 2 was always to make 'Rogue Legacy 3', because we didn’t want to settle for just more," Cellar Door said. After nearly four years of development, bringing it to the fans is the final step in this long journey, and we hope they find it as special as we do."

The sequel features a new 2.5D art style, weapons, classes, abilities, and biome options. You can also use the new Heirlooms to permanently earn new abilities. Additional accessibility options are also promised.

A Knight’s Tale Co-Star Shares Never Before Seen Heath Ledger Set Photos

2 years 1 month ago

To celebrate what would have been Heath Ledger’s 43rd Birthday, co-star Rufus Sewell has shared some old, never before seen photos from the set of the 2001 medieval action-comedy, a Knight’s Tale. The movie told the tale of a squire, William Thatcher (Ledger), who faked his identity in order to compete in a jousting contest and win the heart of a noblewoman.

While it may not have lit the world on fire when it came out, the film is considered a cult classic now, as fans revel in the comedy of Ledger and Sewell, as well as other notable stars Alan Tudyk, Shannyn Sossamon, Mark Addy, and Paul Bettany.

In the post, Sewell noted that he had found the photos after thinking they were lost forever. You can check them out for yourself below.

Shortly after working on Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight, Ledger died of a drug overdose in 2008. A few months later, the film would release, earning the actor a posthumous award for Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his portrayal of Joker.

League of Legends developer Riot criticised over return to office policies

A new report has highlighted staff concerns at Riot Games, as the League of Legends developer has begun encouraging staff back into its Los Angeles-based office.

Employees told Vice that Riot's decision to drop its mask mandate and stop testing for unvaccinated employees put them at risk, as hybrid working with three days in the office per week was being encouraged as the new norm.

Today's report comes just a week after similar criticisms and staff walkouts at Activision, which also has studios in California. Both companies said the changes reflected their state's recent relaxation in Covid safety rules - despite rising case numbers due to the Omicron BA2 subvariant.

We ranked every LEGO Star Wars game except for LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga

2 years 1 month ago

The release of LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga marks an incredible 17 years between this new instalment and the very first game in the series, 2005’s LEGO Star Wars: The Video Game.

While the original game may almost be old enough to pop down to the Mos Eisley Cantina for a Fuzzy Tauntaun or two, since its inception, the LEGO Star Wars video game brand has spawned a surprising amount of adventures both old and new.

Some of these games have been lost in the sands of time and are either no longer playable, no longer canon to the series, or both, but all have been included in the list video above. In it, I rank all 15 LEGO Star Wars games (except for LEGO Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga which is the 16th) from worst to best. Or should that be from Dark Side to Light Side?

RTX 3080 Ti and 3090 Ti Founders Edition graphics cards are in stock at RRP

2 years 1 month ago

Things might be getting better on the graphics card front, as retailer Scan has managed to keep Nvidia RTX 3080 Ti and 3090 Ti Founders Edition models in stock for far longer than expected.

The two GPUs are the latest iteration on Nvidia's RTX lineup of cards, providing a marginal boost over their original counterparts, the 3080 and 3090, respectively. However, those still in the market looking to upgrade from the 10-series or lower-end 20-series cards will find that these two GPUs represent a ton of extra performance, plus useful features like AV1 decoding and compatibility with HDMI 2.1 TVs and monitors.

Scan has both models at RRP, which is the benefit of Nvidia's strict control over the sale of its Founders Edition products. You also get a pretty slick thermal solution and Nvidia's modern 12-pin power delivery cables, in a package that's smaller and easier to fit in your PC than most 3080 Ti and 3090 Ti models.
