DOAXVV Atelier Sophie Collaboration Adds Sophie and Plachta Costumes

2 years 2 months ago

DOAXVV Atelier Sophie

A new Dead or Alive Xtreme: Venus Vacation Atelier Sophie 2 collaboration event is adding several new costumes based on the game's main characters. The event includes a banner featuring two SSR costumes resembling Sophie and Plachta. Additionally, the Atelier Ryza costumes are also returning to the game for a limited time. Both DOAXVV events will run until March 3, 2022, and are only confirmed for the Japanese version of the game.

Special daily events will allow players to acquire alchemy resources and Uni. Players can exchange the Uni at the shop to receive an SR Atelier Sophie 2-themed bikini costume. On the other hand, alchemy resources help craft upgrade materials such as baked waffles, refill bottles, and puni jelly. If participating characters are wearing the Atelier Sophie 2 costumes, the drop rate for these resources will increase. Each collaboration costume is available to wear for five different characters.

Players can also exchange the Uni for Gold Uni, which can purchase special collaboration furnishings such as posters and scale cut-outs. Notably, the Atelier Ryza furniture series is also making a return through the Gold Uni exchange. Other event-exclusive items include Deco Bromides and cosmetics such as Sophie's staff and Plachta's book.

Slitterhead Combat is Action-Focused, Influenced by Gravity Rush

2 years 2 months ago

Slitterhead Combat Gravity Rush

Keiichiro Toyama revealed that Gravity Rush influenced the combat in Slitterhead. The subject came up during a Q&A session with the founders of Bokeh Game Studio. Additionally, the three studio founders talked about the game's ongoing development and future plans. Notably, Kazunobu Sato confirmed that the game will get a physical release as well as a collector's edition.

"This game is, in a way, a compilation of all of my past experiences," Toyama said in a response to a question asking whether there were any aspects from Gravity Rush that inspired Slitterhead. Specifically, the development team used knowledge gained from Gravity Rush's height-based action sequences to design the combat in Slitterhead.

Game Director Junya Okura said that the game will prioritize entertainment over horror. While the game will focus on action elements, Okura also revealed that there will be slower-paced areas that will have stronger horror elements. Toyama added that, rather than relying on the difficulty to instill fear into players, he wants to create it through the internal conflict of "whether one should or shouldn't do an action."

A few of the questions revolved around the future of the studio, and whether Slitterhead would become a series. The creators also commented on the differences between working for a big publisher and going indie. The interview also discusses the inspiration of the game's enemies and location.

Elden Ring's PC performance simply isn't good enough

2 years 2 months ago

In fairness, the quality of From Software's PC ports had been improving over time. The original Dark Souls was a disaster, but from its sequel up to Sekiro, PC users received the best versions of those games. Unfortunately, this welcome upward trajectory nose-dives with the release of Elden Ring. Its issues are numerous, but most egregious of all is a persistent stuttering that ruins the flow of the game - it's a genuinely poor presentation that needs to be addressed urgently.

Quite how the game reached consumers in this state isn't clear, but the 'why' does have some level of explanation. Elden Ring is the first title that sees the From Software engine transition to DirectX 12. As we've discussed previously (most recently with the disappointing PC port of Final Fantasy 7 Remake), DX12 gives developers much more control of the GPU: elements such as memory management and threading are no longer handled by the driver, meaning that many responsibilities move across directly to the developer. The stuttering issues suggest that shader compilation management is poorly handled, with shader code compiled the first time it's needed in-game, generating split-second delays throughout the experience.

Pokemon Legends: Arceus Is Pokemon's Most Tragic Story Ever

2 years 2 months ago

Every good JRPG usually ends with the player killing God. But never has a game made me want to defeat an all-powerful deity more than Pokemon Legends: Arceus has.

That's because the titular character of Pokemon Legends: Arceus, aka the Pokemon God themself, is far from a benevolent, kind being that cares about their creation. Instead, Arceus is a massive evil jerkward that doesn't care about the world a bit, and provokes the most tragic story a Pokemon game has ever told.

Warning: This article and the video embedded contain major spoilers for the entire storyline of Pokemon: Legends Arceus, including the post-game. Watch only if you don't care about spoilers or have finished the entire main story quest.

In this video breakdown of the game's ending, I go over the ways in which Arceus proves themself throughout Pokemon Legends to be not merely chaotic neutral, but thoroughly evil. Its crimes include kidnapping children, causing permanent amnesia in train conductors, trapping benevolent demigods in horrible upside down dimensions, ignoring the plight of the people they're meant to protect, foisting all its responsibilities onto others who are less equipped to handle them, and ditching their godly responsibilities to play collect-a-thon games and go off on larks across the country. You know, for funsies.

And unlike the major tragedies of other Pokemon games, Pokemon Legends: Arceus doesn't get a happy ending for those Arceus made to suffer the most. Unless, of course, DLC is coming, in which case we have to pay extra money for a satisfying ending to these divinely-inflicted tragedies.

Witch Watch is at Its Best When It Gets Goofy

2 years 2 months ago

Witch Watch is at Its Best When It Gets Goofy

Witch Watch is a manga that feels like it is covering quite a few genres. We have a situation where two teenagers with special abilities show up. There are hints that one, a witch named Nico, will eventually be in danger and need her bodyguard/familiar, an ogre named Morihito, to step up. It also can sometimes seem like some romantic comedy elements come into play, since the duo share some chemistry. However at its outset, what really ensures it works is the occasionally ridiculous dynamic and situations the two get into as a young witch trying to do good and young man attempting to save her from herself.

Fortunately, there are plenty of opportunities for Witch Watch to get silly. The dynamic between Morihito and Nico is a good example. He’s a very grounded and pragmatic individual. He’s often realistic. She’s more idealistic and naive. It allows for opportunities for Nico to be over the top, while Morihito can be the voice of reason and save the day.

Witch Watch is at Its Best When It Gets GoofyA good example comes when Nico shows Morihito what her magic can do. She wants to show how she can use a spell to turn anything to paper. Since he’s unwilling to provide any of his things as an example, due to her breaking his favorite mug with another spell, she casts it on herself. She then… blows away. He chases her down and needs to destroy a wall so she doesn’t suddenly become 3D again when trapped in a crack between two buildings.
