miHoYo Contributed $65 Million for Nuclear Fusion Research

2 years 1 month ago

miHoYo, the company behind Genshin Impact and Honkai Impact 3, contributed $65 million to Energy Singularity, which is a company that works on nuclear fusion technology. miHoYo led the round of financing alongside other corporations such as NIO Capital. [Thanks, Daniel “ZhugeEx” Ahmad!]

As part of efforts to lower carbon emissions, some companies and governments conduct research into renewable energy. Nuclear fusion is one of those options. While Tokamak devices are not new, small and commercialized versions of the machine could mean that more individuals and businesses would have access to clean energy.

A Tokamak device is a machine that uses magnets to confine plasma particles. This then leads to fusion (and energy), thus nuclear fusion. There are a large number of Tokamak devices in history. France has been constructing the ITER (International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor), and it will finish in 2025.

Far: Changing Tides Review

2 years 1 month ago

Bigger isn’t always better. In the case of Far: Changing Tides, a sequel to 2018’s lovely and underappreciated Far: Lone Sails, bigger certainly means more to do and see, but it doesn’t necessarily mean those things are any more interesting. It’s still an absolutely gorgeous and at times almost meditative roadtrip across a world full of stunning vistas and clever puzzles – but developer Okomotive’s efforts to make it a more mechanically varied journey, while successful, also inadvertently tip the balance of the original’s formula from peaceful to tedious at times.

Far: Changing Tides puts you in control of an almost comically small person, at least compared to the large sailing vessel they are piloting all on their own. Like its predecessor, it tells a story with little-to-no words, communicating information through visuals to generally strong effect. Most of the time you may not know exactly what you’re doing in this apparently post-apocalyptic world, but you’ll never feel lost either, and never lose motivation to keep sailing toward the right in search of some salvation or another.

2 years 1 month ago

Kingdom Hearts Dark Road Update Delayed Again

Kingdom Hearts Dark Road Offline Update

The update for the offline version of Kingdom Hearts: Dark Road has been delayed again. The official Japanese Twitter account announced that the patch would require "a little more time.” The 5.0.0 update was initially slated to release during Winter 2021 and will now release at an unspecified date.

According to Square Enix, one of the reasons for the delay is the large number of new scenarios coming with the new update. Kingdom Hearts: Dark Road is a prequel story that follows antagonist Xehanort, starting with the character's youth. The announcement tweet includes various images from the game.

The upcoming 5.0.0 update is the final story update for Kingdom Hearts: Dark Road offline. Square Enix initially planned to release the update in September 2021. However, due to various issues, the company had postponed the update indefinitely. Prior to the most recent delay, Square Enix had announced the aforementioned Winter 2021 window.

Kingdom Hearts: Dark Road originally released globally in June 2020 as part of the existing Kingdom Hearts: Union x mobile app. A year later, Square Enix announced that it would shut down the Union x app. After the shutdown, players would be unable to access Dark Road via Union x. Players would instead be able to enjoy the story through a new, offline version of the game.

Breath of the Wild - 19 Fascinating Facts From The Game’s Development

2 years 1 month ago

It’s been a full five years since Breath of the Wild was released on March 3, 2017, and we’re still entranced. Nintendo packed so many innovative ideas and small details into its open-world opus that new discoveries continue to be made almost every day. But how did the development team decide what Breath of the Wild should be like as an experience? Where did they draw their inspiration from? And how different could it have been? To find out, let’s go all the way back to the game’s development to revisit 19 fascinating facts that helped shaped this landmark game. Be sure to let us know in the comments how many of these you already knew, and also don’t miss out on the video version of this feature above!

1) Breadth of the Wild Ideas

The goal of Breath of the Wild was to "break the conventions of the Zelda series," and that was really taken to heart by the development team, who pitched all sorts of wild ideas early on in planning, from a Hyrule with invading UFOs that could abduct cattle, through to a guitar-wielding Link and motorbike-riding Link.

UF-Woah.

The team clearly had fun imagining new possibilities for the series, and for Link alone almost a hundred different designs were presented within the team. And hey, as goofy as he may look, the concepts for Biker Link weren't too far off the mark in the end… at least, mechanically.
