It’s worth mentioning that it’ll work only if the language of your console is set to Japanese, English, Traditional Chinese, or Korean. If you have it in another language, you’ll need to temporarily change it.

It includes the main story up to episode 7, 12 stage of the battle simulator, the Star Cube (character development), shop, and ship menu. It’ll have a level cap set at 30.

Grid Legends Review

2 years 2 months ago

The venerable Gran Turismo 7 is not the only racing game being released in the next week or so that can trace its roots way back to 1997; indeed, the first seeds of Grid Legends sprouted that same year with retro racing royalty TOCA Touring Cars on PC and the original PlayStation. Mining that 25-year history for inspiration and reenlisting some long-forgotten characters, Codemasters has turned Grid Legends into a sequel to both 2019’s Grid and 2002’s TOCA Race Driver, which was the first time the studio had injected a story into the series. The live-action, documentary-style approach of Grid Legends is very different from the primitive PS2 cutscenes of the pioneering TOCA Race Driver, but it’s a story I’ve enjoyed watching unfold – even if the on-track action hasn’t changed dramatically from Grid 2019.

Grid Legends’ story mode, Driven to Glory, is a little different from the one Codemasters debuted in F1 2021 last year; in Grid Legends the story is presented as a sports documentary rather than a standard drama. The ebb and flow of the fictional, globetrotting, multi-discipline Grid championship is contextualised via one-on-one interviews with the characters, plus other fly-on-the-wall moments as the camera crew slips into garages, VIP areas, and hovers around the paddock. It’s more Netflix’s Drive to Survive and less Sylvester Stallone’s Driven, and it’s probably the better of the two paths.

Grid Legends review - a fun but thin expansion to 2019's reboot

2 years 2 months ago

If you're plugged into the racing game scene, you'll have noticed that Gran Turismo 7 is nearly upon us. If you're particularly aware, you might have spotted that it's that series' 25th anniversary year. What you perhaps haven't spotted is that there's another racing series that's celebrating its 25th anniversary with a new release a mere week before.

Unlike Gran Turismo 7, which has clung to a successful formula and recognisable aesthetic for its full quarter century, Grid Legends is barely recognisable as a sequel to 1997's TOCA Touring Car Championship, the game at the root of its lineage. And while describing this as a TOCA game is a bit like claiming that the latest Mercedes Formula One challenger is actually a silver Tyrrell, fire up a race in its Classic Touring Car class behind the wheel of a yellow and blue Renault Laguna and the spirit lives on.

Elden Ring Continues the Souls Series' Longest In-Joke

2 years 2 months ago

Warning: this article contains spoilers for Elden Ring’s first location.

Elden Ring has continued FromSoftware’s long running in-joke by once again including a character that Souls fans love to hate.

In Elden Ring’s opening location of Limgrave players can find Patches, the bald trickster who has constantly pulled pranks on players throughout the Soulsborne series of games.

This time around, Patches can be found in the Murkwater Cave. Should you wish to find him you’ll want to follow the river north and keep your eye out for a dungeon entrance. Once again he can be a valuable ally thanks to his collection of wares on sale (you might want to inspect his inventory before heading into Stormveil Castle) but he’ll prove a nuisance before offering you any help, naturally.

This is the sixth incarnation of Patches. He first appeared in Demon’s Souls as Patches the Hyena, and was later seen in Dark Souls (as Trusty Patches), Bloodborne (as Patches the Spider), and Dark Souls 3 and its Ringed City DLC (as Unbreakable Patches). Dark Souls 2 also features a Patches-style character, but was known as Mild-Mannered Pate.

FromSoftware Addresses Elden Ring PC Start Up Issue

Elden Ring PC Start Up Issue

FromSoftware released a statement through its official Twitter account addressing an issue with the PC version of Elden Ring. This problem in particular prevents the PC of the version game from launching or starting up. FromSoftware identified that this start up issue has to do with the Easy Anti-Cheat software that comes bundled with Elden Ring on PC. The statement shared that in some cases, the software does not install correctly, which leads to the game not starting. The developers are investigating the cause of this issue and apologized to consumers for any inconveniences.

Additionally, Bandai Namco released a patch right before the worldwide launch of the game to potentially fix multiple technical issues with Elden Ring. The fixes included frame drops, NPC events, and improved player control. However, users are still reporting that several of these issues remain within the PC release of the game. Most notably, issues concerning frame drops are still being reported.

Leading up to the release of Elden Ring, Bandai Namco also shared the minimum requirements to play Elden Ring on PC, which included the minimum graphics and processor requirements.

Elden Ring is immediately available for the PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC.

Making Souls games accessible isn't the same as making them easy

2 years 2 months ago

In school, I played with imaginary swords. Typical playground fantasy for those not good enough to be picked for football: battles under the netball hoops with weapons no one could see. Little did I know I’d be doing the same when I discovered Dark Souls over a decade later. Since the onset of chronic illness that left me cognitively limited in 2015, I’ve finished countless runs, collected everything, killed every boss, and didn’t see any of it.

Earth Defense Force 6 for PS5 & PS4 Gets Wacky New Trailer & Gameplay Aplenty

D3 Publisher released a new trailer and livestreamed plenty of gameplay of the upcoming action game Earth Defense Force 6.

The trailer is as wacky as you expect from the series, basically comparing various kinds of aliens to sushi. By now, fans should get used to this kind of antics.

We also get to see plenty of gameplay, including a comparison between the PS5 and PS4 versions. You don’t see that much due to the size of the screen, but at least the loading times are evident.

Martha is Dead review - promising Italian horror descends into incoherent chaos

2 years 2 months ago

Whilst I do my best to keep my reviews spoiler-free, it's incredibly difficult to critique Martha Is Dead without reflecting, in part, on some of its more problematic story beats. Consequently, though I promise to minimise them, it's unlikely this review will be entirely without spoilers. Apologies!

The scene everyone's talking about right now - a scene at the beginning of the game where a girl deftly slices off the face of her twin sister's corpse - is not the scene from Martha is Dead that we should be talking about. I don't think it's the scene we will be talking about. There are several sequences, in fact, that may spark the outrage of pearl clutchers everywhere, scenes that are so gratuitously obscene that even I - a card-carrying lover of deliciously dark stories with a penchant for psychological horror - struggle to justify, and that some may struggle to stomach.

Elden Ring: Bandai Namco Apologizes for Performance Issues

2 years 2 months ago

Bandai Namco has apologized for a number of performance issues affecting Elden Ring players, including numerous complaints of frame rate issues on PC.

In a post on its website, the publisher acknowledged that the game is "currently experiencing some issues that are preventing the game from playing properly under some conditions," and apologized while asking for patience.

By far the biggest compaint around the game's current state is about frame rate and stuttering issues on PC. The game is currently seeing "Mixed" reviews on Steam, with many complaints focused on the above issues. That issue has been exacerbated by the fact that console versions received a patch to alleviate frame rate problems (among other things) on launch day, with no such update for PC

"Struggling to maintain 60FPS/1080p on a 3080," wrote Steam player shmoople, summing up many similar messages "massive stuttering and drops to the mid 20s, crashed 4 times within 2 hours of game time, 60 FPS cap, and no ultrawide support."

Bandai Namco acknowledged the problems, saying that it would be "constantly working to improve the game so that it can be played comfortably on various PC environments and platforms." The publisher also suggested that updating graphics card drivers could help alleviate the issues.

We’ve Got Bad News About Elden Ring’s Pot Friends

2 years 2 months ago

Warning: this article contains mild spoilers for Elden Ring.

In the lead up to Elden Ring’s launch, there’s been one breakout character who has been embraced by the community: Pot Boy. Later called Pot Friend by Bandai Namco, this sentient ceramic has captured the hearts of thousands.

But we’ve got bad news about the pot boys. They’re definitely not all friends.

The most famous of the pot boys is Alexander. He’s the one you may have seen in gameplay clips who is stuck in the ground in need of aid. Don’t worry about this big lad; he’s a friend, and will even clue you in on an important location.

But not every one of his kin is so friendly. Within the walls of some of Elden Ring’s dungeons, you’ll come across both small and large versions of these pot boys. Officially known as Living Jars, the large versions can be particularly aggressive, and use a variety of rolling and slamming attacks to pulverize your health bar. Your only options in these instances are to either run away or - more likely - shatter that ceramic exterior so the jar’s red liquid insides can splatter all over the floor and walls.

We're sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Silent Hill Creator Would Like to Make Another Game Like It

2 years 2 months ago

Silent Hill creator Keiichiro Toyama has said that he'd like to someday return to psychological horror and create another game like his spooky classic.

Talking as part of a Q&A session about his new studio, Bokeh Game Studio, Toyama explained that he does hope to one day create something similar to Silent Hill, but that right now he has the ability to make something more action-packed, and so that's what he wants to chase with Bokeh's first game, Slitterhead.

"I want someday to do something with some classic psychological horror themes like I did with Silent Hill," he said. "However, I’d rather do that when working with really limited resources, such as budget or having to focus on one individual. Right now, we have staff with the ability to work on action. I want to leverage their skills to go in another direction."

"Still, I also want to make something more personal someday," he concluded.

Slitterhead features action and combat sequences, but also involves aspects of more cerebral horror. "I wanted a game that could be enjoyed for its action, yet whose concept doesn’t solely revolve around killing enemies," Toyama explained. "It conflicts with the mind, making the players reluctant to enter certain fights. I want to achieve both action and drama with this game."

Elden Ring Steam Numbers Nearly Six Times Greater Than From Software’s All-Time High

2 years 2 months ago

Elden Ring Steam PC Launch Numbers

Platform: PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, PC
Publisher: Bandai Namco
Developer: From Software
Release:

Elden Ring is finally out after years of anticipation and it seems the hype that’s been building since its announcement in 2019 has paid off for From Software.

That’s because less than 24 hours after release, Elden Ring’s Steam numbers (courtesy of SteamDB, which tracks the numbers of players in a game) are already nearly six times greater than From Software’s previous all-time high. That previous high resides with Dark Souls III, which has a peak playerbase of 129,975. Elden Ring’s current all-time high is a whopping 764,835, which is roughly 5.9 times higher than that of Dark Souls III.

Tiny Combat Arena early access review: a stylised and supersonic dogfighting sortie

2 years 2 months ago

Harriers are rare among the bird family, in that they’re one of the very few birds to have been overtaken in popularity by their namesake fighter jet*. Mention a harrier anywhere outside of an ornithology summit and people will assume you’re talking about the hovering aeroplane rather than the diurnal hawk. Tell somebody your harrier is hungry and they’re as likely to chuck a vole into a turbine as they are to feed it into your pet bird’s gullet.

So it’s unsurprising that Tiny Combat Arena is about Harriers of the cold and featherless kind. The one-person dev team behind the air-to-air combat simulator is apparently in love with the floaty-shooty jumping jet, so much so that it’s the only type of plane available to fly in the game's early access release. The retro-styled sim lets you pore over the low-poly plane as it rests in the hangar, to rest your chin in your hands as you lovingly scroll through its various specifications, inspecting its payload like you’re checking a dog over for ticks.

Slitterhead Developers Answer Questions in New Bokeh Game Studio Video

2 years 2 months ago

Following the reveal of its first game Slitterhead, Bokeh Game Studio released an extensive video in which its founders talked about their work.

We hear from CEO Keiichiro Toyama, who is well-known as the creator of the Gravity Rush, Siren, and Silent Hill franchises, CTO Junya Okura, and COO Kazunobu Sato.

In the video, they respond to questions gathered on social media and provide interesting hints about what we can expect from Slitterhead.

On top of that, we also hear some details on the difference between working for a bit publisher and their current status as independent developers.

All three developers were formerly veterans of Sony Japan Studio, before leaving to seek a new path as indies.

You can enjoy the video below. Incidentally, the video is just “part one” of the Q&A, with the second coming on March 4.

Do keep in mind that it comes with subtitles in a variety of languages, but you may have to activate them manually.
