GTA 5 and GTA Online: PS5 and Xbox Series X/S Versions Get March Release Date

2 years 2 months ago

GTA 5 and GTA Online will be released as upgraded, native PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions on March 15.

After a delay last year, Rockstar has confirmed that the new-gen editions will arrive soon, bringing "new graphics modes with up to 4K resolution, up to 60 frames per second, texture and draw distance upgrades, HDR options and ray-tracing".

Rockstar also promises that the games will take advantage of new console tech, offering "faster loading times, immersive 3D audio, platform-specific features like advanced haptic feedback, and much more."

Players will be able to perform a "one-time migration" of their story mode progress and GTA Online characters from PS4 and Xbox One to PS5 and Xbox Series X/S.

It's not clear whether there will be a free or paid upgrade path from last-gen games, nor whether save migration can be performed cross-platform, or has to stay within a console family. We've contacted Rockstar for comment.

As previously announced, GTA Online will also be released as a standalone game, without the need to purchase GTA 5. It will be free for three months after launch on PS5 and Xbox Series X, but Rockstar has not announced a price after that date.

GTA Online itself will also be add new onboarding features when it comes to the new console generation. Players will be able to skip the GTA 5 story prologue to enter (presumably because Online no longer requires a purchase of 5), and a new Career Builder feature is being added.

GTA 6 Confirmed: Rockstar Finally Says It's in Development

2 years 2 months ago

After years of rumours and reports, Rockstar has confirmed it's working on a new Grand Theft Auto game, and said that it's "well underway".

In a new press release, a Rockstar spokesperson wrote:

"With the unprecedented longevity of GTAV, we know many of you have been asking us about a new entry in the Grand Theft Auto series. With every new project we embark on, our goal is always to significantly move beyond what we have previously delivered — and we are pleased to confirm that active development for the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series is well underway. We look forward to sharing more as soon as we are ready, so please stay tuned to the Rockstar Newswire for official details.

On behalf of our entire team, we thank you all for your support and cannot wait to step into the future with you!"

IGN reported that GTA 6 – if that is indeed what the game ends up being called – was in development back in 2020, but that it was a long way from release. Further reports pegged the game to arrive in 2024 or 2025.

Ghostwire: Tokyo - The First Preview

2 years 2 months ago

There is absolutely no mistaking where Ghostwire: Tokyo – which just confirmed a March 25 release date – takes place. LED billboards beam down from the tightly packed skyscrapers. Torii gates, sheathed by leafy trees, pockmark the urban sprawl. A convenience store beckons to the player on every street corner, offering a bright jingle and a catalog of processed sweets. At last, after a decade spent in American suburbia with The Evil Within franchise, Tango Gameworks is returning to their beloved homefront. After watching a 20 minute gameplay demo of Ghostwire: Tokyo at a recent preview event, I don't think the megacity has ever been rendered more accurately… you know, save for the marauding evil spirits and the psychedelic geysers of dark energy. In Tango’s vision, the Japanese capital has gone to hell, but at least you can still pick up some plastic-wrapped onigiri before your next fight.

Persona 5 Royal Haru and Loki Figures Announced

Megahouse is continuing its MegaHobby Plus 2022 Winter reveals, and among them are new Persona 5 Royal figures. Two are in the works. Each one isn’t far along in development, however. One is a figure of Haru “Noir” Okumura as she appears in Persona 5 Royal, while the other recreates the Persona Loki.

Editor's Note: The Loki figure art will be a spoiler for people who didn't play the game.

The Haru figure is a part of the Lucrea line. She also doesn’t appear alone. Morgana shows up as well. He’s on the base in his van form. A concept model for it also shows she will hold her grenade launcher.

Aegislash is the Next Pokemon Unite Playable Character

Aegislash is the Next Pokemon Unite Playable Character

The next Pokemon Unite character will debut next week. The Pokemon Company International and Timi Studio revealed another ghost-type is on the way. Though actually, it is a ghost and steel type. Aegislash will show up in Pokemon Unite on February 10, 2022.

Aegislash is a unique sort of Pokemon. In the mainline series, it is known for being able to shift its form. So say it would use Iron Defense. It would then shift into the Shield Forme to prioritize defense. But any attack move would use Blade Forme.

The initial Pokemon Unite trailer for the character suggests this will carry over into this game. In the footage, both Blade and Shield Formes appear when certain moves are used. The announcement also confirmed the character will be an “All-Rounder” type that can work in offensive and defensive situations.

Alba: A Wildlife Adventure is a pure ray of sunshine for the soul

2 years 2 months ago

Last year, Ed wrote about how he wished Ian Hitman could skip in IO Interactive's big shiny assassin sim. Well, Agent 47 clearly needs to make the next stop on his international mission list a nice, relaxing retreat on the Mediterranean island of Pinar del Mar. Not to murder anyone, of course. But to hang out with Alba for some all important frolicking lessons. She's a pro at this skipping marlarkey. If she's not throwing her arms out like an aeroplane when she's running up and down the yellowing hills of this sleepy little island village, she's doing a jolly little skip that is probably the most delightful thing I've ever seen in a video game. In fairness, the whole game is just pure joy distilled into a chill wildlife photography adventure, but man alive, the skipping is something else. More of this please, developers.

Work on a new Grand Theft Auto "is well underway", Rockstar say

2 years 2 months ago

Eight years after the launch of Grand Theft Auto V, Rockstar Games have finally confirmed yes, they really are making a new GTA. For eight years they've focused on adding new content to the MMO-y GTA Online mode, which seems a licence to print money by selling in-game cash for real cash. This has made some fans ornery, wondering if they'll just keep on plugging away at GTAO forever, especially with GTAV coming to next-gen consoles this year. But no, really, Rockstar say they really have been making a new one.

Rockstar Confirms Next GTA Game Is in Active Development; Release Date Set for GTA V on PS5 & Xbox Series X|S

2 years 2 months ago

For what feels like a decade now *checks calendar* OK literally almost a decade as GTA V was released back in 2013, rumors and speculation has swirled about GTA VI. Today, Rockstar confirmed that active development on the next GTA game is underway.

No details were given about the game, they never said the words GTA VI, nor did they confirm how long the game has been in development. But, all that said, Rockstar is taking the big step of at least acknowledging the existence of a new GTA game, squashing any beliefs that there would never be another new GTA game and that GTA Online through GTA V was the future.

Rockstar continues on and adds that they will keep fans updated via their newswire. That’s pretty much all we’re getting on the “GTA VI” front for now it seems, but fans that have been begging for new GTA game news at least are getting a morsel of information today finally.

Acclaimed co-op adventure It Takes Two has now sold five million copies

2 years 2 months ago

Co-op platformer It Takes Two was widely praised by critics when it launched last March, even managing to secure a place in many an end-of-year best-of list in 2021; more than that, though, it's continued to resonate with players, and developer Hazelight Studios has now announced the game has surpassed the five million sales mark across PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC.

It Takes Two, if you're unfamiliar, follows the adventures of Cody and May, a human couple preparing to divorce, who are forced to work together after being turned into living dolls. In gameplay terms, that translates to a wonderfully inventive split-screen platformer where careful co-operation is key. And while Eurogamer's Robert Purchase had reservations about its story in his review, he was still charmed enough by its antics to call it "a rare kind of co-op experience, with an energy and imagination and playfulness that sometimes rivals Nintendo's."

Nintendo Hacker Gary Bowser Sentenced To 40 Months In Jail

2 years 2 months ago

Nintendo hacker Gary Bowser will serve a 40 month jail sentence for his role in creating and selling devices that host pirated games, Nintendo announced today. While significant, it's short of the five-year jail sentence the U.S. government previously requested.

The original proposed 60-month sentence was discovered in a recent court document, spotted by Eurogamer. The document lays down the argument for Bowser to be locked away for five years, with a further three years of supervised release, in order for him to "recognize the harm" that derived from his crimes, having pled guilty to two piracy charges last year.

The US government suggested that their recommended term of imprisonment reflects "the nature and circumstances of the offence, the history and characteristics of the defendant, and the need for the sentence to reflect the seriousness of the offence, to promote respect for the law, and to provide just punishment...to afford adequate deterrence to criminal conduct."

Bowser's legal team, however, asked for a much shorter sentence, arguing that their client is "the least culpable and only apprehended defendant from this indictment," leaving him with the "brunt" of the blame. His lawyers recognized that Nintendo had "suffered substantial monetary loss" as a result of the offences but deemed a 19-month jail term as appropriate.

Resident Evil 4 Creator Hopes the Rumored Remake Improves His Story

2 years 2 months ago

Resident Evil 4 has long been rumored to be getting a remake, and the original game’s creator wants to see it improve on his story, which he says he was forced to write in just three weeks..

During an interview with VG242, Shinji Mikami said that “fans will most likely want [a remake], and so that’s a good thing.”

“It would be great if Capcom could do a great job and make the story better,” he added, “and put out a good product.”

Mikami – who created the Resident Evil series, directed and wrote Resident Evil 4, and left Capcom in 2007 – revealed that he wrote the Resident Evil 4 story in just three weeks. According to the former Capcom director, this was out of necessity more than anything. It seems he's less happy with that narrative than the game itself.

The Resident Evil 4 remake has been rumored for some time, with leaked documents reportedly from Capcom suggesting a release date was at one point planned for sometime later this year, in Q4 (October-December).

Rockstar Confirms The Next Grand Theft Auto Game Is In Active Development

2 years 2 months ago

In addition to revealing the release date of the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S versions of Grand Theft Auto V and GTA Online, Rockstar has confirmed that development on the next full-fledged GTA has indeed commenced.

Rockstar’s blog post today concluded with a note stating as much, which you can read in full below:

With the unprecedented longevity of GTAV, we know many of you have been asking us about a new entry in the Grand Theft Auto series. With every new project we embark on, our goal is always to significantly move beyond what we have previously delivered — and we are pleased to confirm that active development for the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series is well underway. So there you have it. While not the biggest surprise in the world, there is a vocal sect of fans that will be relieved to know that, yes, Rockstar won’t be re-releasing GTA V in perpetuity. The question becomes how long it will be before Grand Theft Auto 6, or whatever Rockstar decides to call it, makes its grand debut.

Megahouse Persona 3 Thanatos Figure Shown

Megahouse Persona 3 Thanatos Figure Shown

Yet another Persona figure appeared at Megahouse’s MegaHobby Plus 2022 Winter showcase. This one is Thanatos from Persona 3. The company confirmed it would rerelease the Game Characters Collection DX statue that first appeared back in January 2020. There’s no price or release window for the rerelease, however the original release was 23,000円 (~$200).

The rerelease of the Persona 3 Thanatos figure is being described as an Anniversary Edition. Like the first run, it will still be almost 12 inches tall. Though that height does take into account the Persona’s sword. Translucent effect parts appear to make it look as though he is in the middle of an attack. The Persona plays a major role in the game.

Here's how it looks from various angles.
[gallery ids="915124,915125,915126" link="file"]

This is one of two Game Characters Collection DX figures from the series to show up in the second phase of the event. Megahouse also revealed a Persona 5 Loki figure. That one is quite early in development. As such, only concept art appeared.

Persona 3 is available on the PlayStation 2 both in standard and enhanced FES editions. Persona 3 Portable appeared on the PlayStation Portable. The Persona 3 Thanatos figure doesn't have a release date yet.

Stadia reportedly "deprioritised" as Google focuses on selling streaming tech to third-parties

2 years 2 months ago

Google has reportedly "deprioritised" its consumer-facing game streaming platform Stadia and now has a "reduced interest" in negotiating blockbuster titles for the service, having largely shifted its focus to selling the services' underlying technology to third-parties.

Stadia's misfortunes are well-documented; despite initial praise for the service's streaming capabilities at launch in 2019, a slow, problematic roll-out meant Google failed to capitalise on initial consumer interest. The extent of Stadia's failings started to became clear when the company announced it was closing its first-party game development studios less that 14 months after launch, with subsequent reports claiming the streaming platform was missing its targets for monthly active users by hundreds of thousands.

Bungie Was Reportedly 'Exploring' Its Own Streaming Platform Before Sony Deal

2 years 2 months ago

Destiny and former Halo developer Bungie was at one point considering launching its own game streaming platform, Business Insider reports, citing sources familiar with the matter.

As part of a report about Google's attempts to course correct on its failing Stadia streaming service, Google reportedly pitched its tech to Bungie, which was already exploring its own potential streaming service. Under the white-label deal, Bungie would own content and control the front-end service, but Google technology would support the platform.

Of course, Sony recently announced a decision to purchase Bungie for $3.6 billion. Talks between Bungie and Google apparently made "considerable" progress before the deal, but it remains unclear how the acquisition will impact Google's plans. Bungie has said it will keep supporting Stadia — Destiny 2 has been one of the service's marquee attractions — but Sony has an existing deal with Microsoft on cloud gaming infrastructure.

Apex Legends Season 12: Control LTM Preview

2 years 2 months ago

Apex Legends has a new Limited Time Mode coming into Season 12: Defiance. I got to play a bit of it before launch and honestly it just makes me wish Titanfall 2 servers were functional again because it’s basically a Titanfall 2 multiplayer mode in Apex. Here’s how the mode works.

Control is basically like Domination. Two teams of nine compete to hold three different points. You’ll be given unlimited Syringes and Medkits to use to heal your base health throughout the match but your shield will regen on its own after eight seconds of you not taking any damage. You’ll have five different loadouts to choose from before spawning into the match and these options will change daily. You can customize the optics for the weapon sets you do choose, like you can in Arenas. These weapons you spawn with will have infinite ammo as well. Control is much faster than Battle Royale or Arenas since you do respawn after a short timer and it’s all about defending or attacking points. Controlling a zone will give you points every second and the more zones you have, the more points you get per second. The first team to reach the score of 1250 wins.
