Nintendo Is Planning 'A Variety of Projects' for Kirby's 30th Anniversary

2 years 2 months ago

Nintendo will celebrate Kirby's 30th anniversary this year with a "variety of projects" beginning with a free wallpaper being released on the game's official website.

Nintendo's latest financial results discuss the upcoming release of Kirby and the Forgotten Land before going on to talk about the series' anniversary.

"To celebrate that anniversary, we are planning a variety of projects in collaboration with the Kirby developer HAL Laboratory, aimed at sharing the charm of the Kirby series with many people," said Nintendo.

The report doesn't provide any further information as to what these projects will be, but Nintendo of America began the celebrations on Twitter by announcing that a free Kirby wallpaper is now available to download from its website.

The tweet said to "stay tuned for news regarding #Kirby30 activities coming soon."

Pokémon Legends: Arceus May Be On Track To Be Second Fastest-Selling Switch Game

2 years 2 months ago

Pokémon Legends: Arceus is the second fastest selling Switch game in Japan, and stands a chance of achieving the same accolade globally.

According to new figures reported by Famitsu, physical sales of Pokémon Legends: Arceus hit 1.43 million copies within three days of release in Japan. This lags a little behind Animal Crossing: New Horizons, which is the fastest-selling game in Japan thanks to moving 1.88 million copies in three days.

In comparison, Pokémon Brilliant Diamond / Shining Pearl sold almost 1.4 million copies, and Sword and Shield shifted 1.36 million in the same period.

Sales figures for other territories have yet to be announced, but other numbers do offer good signs that Pokémon Legends: Arceus may also be the second fastest-selling Switch game globally, too. Just a few days ago, it was reported that Arceus is the fourth biggest Pokémon retail launch of all time in the UK, at least in regards to physical sales. It debuted at number one in the UK sales charts, and accounted for almost 50% of boxed sales in the week.

Figures from NPD, which tracks sales in the US, will help further clarify Pokémon Legends: Arceus' performance when they are released.

OlliOlli World review: so good it will give you blisters

2 years 2 months ago

So good it will give you blisters. It's a sentence you might read in a glossy 1990s PlayStation magazine ad. "So good it will give you blisters," it says of the latest polygonal bloodsport, with a wired controller hanging from a ceiling, covered in gore. The hyperbole of a generation, a distortion of edgy marketing either aped or mocked by today's advertising sophisticates. You get blisters from walking up hills, not video games. In the forensically sucky cyberpresent of 2022, there is no place for such exaggeration.

OlliOlli World is so good it will give you blisters. I know because I got one.

Valheim celebrates first birthday with info on caves and the Mistlands

2 years 2 months ago

Somehow, it has been one full year since Valheim entered early access. Seems unlikely. I'd buy six months, I'd buy two years, but one year? I don't think so. Still, the makers are quite insistent, so let's humour their charade and hear what they have to say about their future plans for the base-building Norse mythology survival game. Steam Deck support, caves in the Mountains biome, a pretty moth in the Mistlands... okay, sure.

Usada Pekora Pop up Parade Figure Pre-Orders Open

2 years 2 months ago

usada pekora pop up parade figure header

Good Smile Company opened pre-orders for a Pop Up Parade figure of Usada Pekora from Hololive. Pre-orders will close on March 3, 2022. She will cost 4,900 JPY and come out in June 2022 for those in Japan. Meanwhile, in North America, she will cost $49.99 and begin shipping in August 2022.

The Usada Pekora figure has an energetic pose, with one hand outstretched and one leg slightly raised. Her expression is cheery, and she looks like she is pointing at something in her typical mischievous way. According to the Good Smile Company description, the pose pulls inspiration from an drawing by Usada Pekora's illustrator Yuuki Hagure. Unlike other figures, the Usada Pekora figure will not be a limited production. This means that potential buyers don't have to worry about pre-orders closing before the March 3, 2022 date.

Here are some more pictures of the Usada Pekora figure:

A new generation of demon slayers are in the wings, as Aniplex and CyberConnect2 announced Demon Slayer: The Hinokami Chronicles will release on the Nintendo Switch in Japan. It will have two editions and will launch on June 9, 2022. Though this release date is for Japan, it is possible that the Switch version will release in other regions, as the game is available in English. However, nothing has been confirmed as of yet. [Thanks, ryokutya2089!]

The regular edition of Demon Slayer: The Hinokami Chronicles on the Switch will cost 7,480 JPY (about $65), and the limited edition will cost 11,800 JPY (approximately $103). The limited edition will come with new outfits as well as a bonus of 16,000 Kimetsu Points. The new costumes are patient outfits and additional Kimetsu Academy costumes. Specifically, the patient outfits are what Tanjiro, Zenitsu, and Inosuke wore during their time recuperating at the Butterfly Mansion.

There are already Kimetsu Academy alts of characters in the game. It is unclear as to whether the limited edition will provide new outfits for these characters, or if the Kimetsu Academy costumes will appear as outfits for other existing playable characters.

This Logitech G502 Lightspeed gaming mouse is now £79.99

2 years 2 months ago

When it comes to finding a wireless gaming mouse, you'll no doubt want to improve your gaming experience rather than hinder it. Aside from there being one less cable to clutter up your desk, a wireless gaming mouse is also great for easier movement and portability.

If you're thinking of switching from a wired mouse to a non-wired one, you're probably wondering how lag, latency, connectivity, and battery life is affected. While some earlier wireless mice had their hiccups, you'll be pleased to know there is an excellent selection on the market these days that offer the same reliability and responsiveness as the wired variety.

Psychonauts' Tim Schafer has no interest in Double Fine movie adaptations

2 years 2 months ago

In a world where video games seem to be fair picking for movie adaptations, Psychonauts' Tim Schafer just doesn't see that sort of thing happening in Double Fine's future.

Psychonauts 2, the most recent game from Double Fine, was met with overwhelming praise on its release. Eurogamer's Edwin Evans-Thirlwell called it "witty, eccentric and imaginative" during his review, noting it had a "more developed understanding of mental health" than its predecessor. More recently, the mix of hallucinogenic gameplay and emotional storytelling won Psychonauts 2 the Game of the Year accolade at the New York Game Awards. But even with this success, Double Fine's founder Tim Schafer revealed that a movie adaptation of any of his games is not something he is interested in.

OlliOlli World review - a candy-coated dream

2 years 2 months ago

Logfolk Graveyard is where it happened. There should be a plaque really. In a game where time can become a bright fizzing blur, I somehow remember the exact moment. I had been zooming through OlliOlli World until that point - always cheery, sometimes doing well, sometimes just scraping it. But then Logfolk Graveyard came along with the optional challenge: Advance trick through a Ghost.

I bloody love ghosts. All levels here have optional challenges, but that ghost! I realised I definitely wanted to trick through it, to advance-trick through it even! So I had to do what I so rarely choose to do in games. I had to do something that, in a game with the sheer headlong pelt of OlliOlli World, seems like breaking an underlying law. I had to go back. Back to the tutorial I had sped through hours before and forgotten, back to the heart of the advance tricks system to gain a proper understanding of these beautiful, terrible things. Back so I could get them down.

OlliOlli World Review

2 years 2 months ago

The last OlliOlli game, 2015’s OlliOlli2: Welcome to Olliwood, was a breath of fresh air for the skating genre. Its stylised art, intense level design, and challenging trick system all helped it stand out. Seven years later, OlliOlli World has all those things going for it, too, but it also takes a huge step forward for the series by shifting into 3D, giving its skating a better sense of scale, speed, and dynamism without sacrificing the 2D perspective. At the same time, it builds significantly on Olliwood's technical gameplay by layering grabs, wall rides, and more atop the flip tricks, grinds, and manuals that were its foundation. And on top of all that, it goes out of its way to be more welcoming to players of all stripes, putting forth a host of changes that ensure just about anyone can have a good time without losing the fiercely high skill ceiling the series is known for.

OlliOlli World's colourful, cartoony look and character-centric approach is the first thing that had me saying "ooo" – not just because it’s very pretty in its own right, but because it’s also very reminiscent of one of my favourite cartoon locations, Adventure Time's Kingdom of Ooo. Whether we're talking about your character's skate wizard guide Chiffon, the ice cream-headed denizens of Sunshine Valley, the smiling trees of Cloverbrook, or the many “Skate Godz” that you're tricking across Radlandia to meet, there are too many homages to miss the inspiration. It’s also similar in its effervescent and eccentric personality but thankfully doesn’t feel derivative, striking out on its own with a world populated by endearingly offbeat characters and a story that doesn't take itself seriously, yet is enjoyably earnest at the same time.

Dragon Age: Dark Horse Direct Reveals Iron Bull Statuette

2 years 2 months ago

The world of Dragon Age is home to many colorful characters, and Dark Horse Direct is working to bring some of them to three dimensional life. IGN can exclusively reveal the newest addition to Dark Horse's Dragon Age Statuette line, the Iron Bull.

Based on the character's appearance in Dragon Age: Inquisition, this Iron Bull features a detailed recreation of the commander of the Bull's Chargers, with all his mighty swagger intact.

The Iron Bull Statuette is made of polyresin and was sculpted by Bigshot Toyworks, with J.W. Productions handling prototyping and painting. The piece measures roughly 8 inches tall, with a base diameter of 4 inches by 4.25 inches.

Like the other characters in this line, Iron Bull is limited to 1000 pieces worldwide. He's priced at $159.99 and is currently available to preorder on the Dark Horse Direct website. The statuette is expected to ship between September and December 2022.

The Iron Bull is the third character announced for Dark Horse's Dragon Age Statuette line. The Varric statuette is also currently available for preorder, while preorder details for the Morrigan Statuette will be announced later.

OlliOlli World Review – Gnarly Skateboarding Gnarvana

2 years 2 months ago

OlliOlli World on PC

As someone who doesn’t consider themselves a patient gamer, I’m rarely able to find a video game that I like that has mechanics based around trial and error. Yet, despite the many slams I’ve taken throughout the variety of courses in OlliOlli World, few games have relaxed me more over the years.

The concept of Roll7’s OlliOlli World is simultaneously complex and straightforward. While its main goal is to simply get from point A to B in each side-scrolling level, the way that players do that differs significantly, especially with the introduction of a 2.5D landscape.

In the first two games in the series, your character could grind, grab, and flip their way across each level as a way to progress. While doing so, there were also unique score, location, and collectible-based objectives to complete that unlocked new items and levels.

Timing also played a large role in things, as you needed to land tricks and begin your grind inputs at the moment of impact. If you didn’t, your score would suffer, and your momentum could kill your jump.

In OlliOlli World, all of those elements are still an important part of gameplay, but they aren’t the main mechanics and focus. Thanks to the new 2.5D style, features like different paths and halfpipes open up exploration considerably.

OlliOlli World Review – Video Days

2 years 2 months ago

Reviewed on: PlayStation 5
Also on: PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Switch, PC
Publisher: Private Division
Developer: Roll7
Release:
Rating: Everyone 10+

Last week, I noticed my hand was sore. I didn't think much of it, mostly because I wasn't sure why it would be hurting. On Monday, while playing OlliOlli World, I found my reason. I'm not sure there's a better way to recommend World than that; it pushed my hands to their limit.

Compared to the previous two OlliOlli games, which could be prohibitively difficult, World is simultaneously an easy-to-approach 2D skateboarding game with an impossibly high skill ceiling. Early on, the game does a great job quickly teaching you the basics of its trick systems (mostly tied to flicking and rotating the left and right thumbsticks) and then getting out of your way, dropping you in levels, giving you objectives, and letting you skate. Within minutes, I was pulling off increasingly large combos, and more importantly, having a fun time doing it. While I never truly got the hang of the first OlliOlli, in World, I felt compelled to continue to learn its systems because the game isn't front-loaded with frustration. Players of all skill levels should be able to find something enjoyable here.

Tell this AI your story's themes, and it'll write the first paragraph for you

Finally, some help for the writers of the world! It's potentially interesting and useful, or at the very least it is fun to make a computer say silly things.

Electronic Wireless Show podcast episode 172: the best finishing moves in games special

2 years 2 months ago

This week the Electronic Wireless Show podcast is going all in on our favourite finishing moves. This doesn't just mean things from fighting games, although they do obviously make a good showing. As you can imagine, Nate makes the case for RTS games with what he and his pals term 'the GG push'. Plus, we have a great Mortal Kombat themed Cavern Of Lies this week, courtesy of Matthew.

Much time is spent on some excellent digressions this week, including James McAvoy as a rampaging dinosaur from Jurassic Park (a state of affairs that I think would have improved his weird improv film My Son). Plus, could Matthew Save the world if he grew to six size the times of the earth and cut off a slab of his bum like a big steak, to feed us all? Will someone make a game like Deep Rock Galactic, but for mining Matthew's celestial bum-meat? A whimsical episode this week indeed.

New Konami Financial Results Confirm More NFTs on the Way

It seems Konami will continue selling NFTs. The company released its Consolidated Financial Results for the Nine Months Ended December 31, 2021. In it, it brought up its outlook for the fiscal year ending March 31, 2022. When it did, it made sure to bring up NFTs when discussing its plans for digital entertainment going forward. [Thanks, Nibel!]

The exact statement on NFTs was brief, and Konami only brought it up in that one portion of the report. It noted, “We will also be selling Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) in an effort to preserve content that has been loved by our customers as commemorative art.”

So far, Konami has only sold Castlevania NFTs. Its auction took place back in January 2022. It earned over $162,000 from it. The items included images and songs from the series. In some cases, there would be animated clips of certain actions that appear in-game. The official website is live and links to possible auctions.

Kawaki Naruto to Boruto: Shinobi Striker DLC Dated

2 years 2 months ago

Kawaki Naruto to Boruto: Shinobi Striker DLC Dated

Way back in June 2021, Bandai Namco teased Kawaki DLC for Naruto to Boruto: Shinobi Striker. Now it’s about to appear. On February 4, 2022, people will be able to pick up the major Boruto: Naruto Next Generation character. He’s a part of the $14.99 Season Pass 4. However, people could also buy him alone for $3.99.

There's a video accompanying the announcement. It shows off all of Kawaki's major moves. He's an attack-type character. His Secret Technique: Karma Linchpin (Ritual Destruction) draws on his heritage for an AOE attack. (Note it is a spoiler, if someone isn't following the show.) But then, so is Ninjutsu: Karma Linchpin (Strange Taste). That attack is able to keep another player's Ninjutsu from working.

The video ends by reminding people of already available elements. For example, it brings up Super Uzumaki Rasengan is available as a bonus Secret Technique if you buy the Season Pass 4. It also showed off the Lite version game trial. It didn’t note if there will be a Season Pass 5 that adds more Naruto to Boruto: Shinobi Striker DLC characters.

New Laid-Back Camp Mobile Game Announced for 2022

2 years 2 months ago

Laid Back Camp Mobile

Despite its title, Laid-Back Camp (a.k.a. Yuru Camp) is quite an active brand. The original manga by author Afro has spawned two anime seasons, an upcoming film, a live-action series adaptation, and two different video games. Make that three different video games: A new Laid-Back Camp mobile game was announced via a tweet from the official account.

https://twitter.com/yurucamp_game/status/1489162537220202499?s=20&t=8Ea4y0r5uaEpjcwkLXR8gw

The tweet doesn't reveal the game's official title, but does trumpet the fact that it's the "first" mobile game for Laid-Back Camp. Technically, the Laid-Back Camp - Virtual titles are available on mobile platforms, but they're closer to "experiences" than fully-fledged games. The tweet also had a trailer of sorts featuring a chibi-style rendition of camper Rin Shima laying back beside a crackling fire.

The official game website was similarly sparse on detail. It merely features the same trailer and links to Laid-Back Camp portal site, and the website for the upcoming animated film adaptation. The Laid-Back Camp mobile game itself appears to be developed by Enish, which developed mobile games based on the anime series The Quintessential Quintuplets, Rent-A-Girlfriend, and an original RPG title called De:Lithe.

Interview Series Producer Discusses Dynasty Warriors 9 Empires Changes

The world of Dynasty Warriors is constantly growing. Each installment builds on the series’ history, while also offering new takes on actual historical events. The next entry up is Dynasty Warriors 9 Empires, and Siliconera spoke with Series Producer Akihiro Suzuki about its development and changes.

Jenni Lada: When preparing Dynasty Warriors 9 Empires, what did you most want to build on and change from the eighth installment?

Akihiro Suzuki: It was the castle siege battle system which we have updated from previous Empires games.

In Dynasty Warriors 9 Empires, children inheritance lets you determine their gender and weapon, but the affinities and stats don’t change. How did you determine what would and wouldn’t be able to be altered by the player?

Suzuki: We decided that the individual characteristics for the children, such as affinity and abilities, could not be changed in part because it is a collection and replayability feature. Also, in the previous game not being able to change the appearance or gender was unpopular, so for this game they can be altered.

Respawn talks Apex Legends' new hero Mad Maggie and what comes next

2 years 2 months ago

By now, you can't have missed that Apex Legends is poised to embark on its 12th season of content, known as Defiance, next Tuesday, 8th February. Developer Respawn and publisher EA have been promoting the game ceaselessly in recent weeks, gradually unveiling a new limited-time 9v9 mode, as well big changes for the game's Olympus map, and, of course, a mouthy new hero in the form of Mad Maggie.

It's Maggie that took the spotlight in a recent developer session for press, with Respawn keen to dive more deeply into the character - as well as her abilities - before her official arrival next week. But while her playable debut is near, Maggie has, of course, been in orbit around Apex Legends for quite some time, having first made her mark as a supporting character in Fuse's introductory cinematic back in January last year.

Battlefield 2042's Much-Requested Scoreboard Update Has Been Delayed

2 years 2 months ago

The Battlefield 2042 features that DICE delayed its first season pass for have now also been delayed until March.

The much-requested scoreboard update was due to release in February but a Twitter post from the Battlefield Direct Communication page (below) announced it would be delayed until March.

Two days ago on February 1 DICE announced it would be delaying Battlefield 2042's Season One to early summer to instead focus on fixing current issues in the game. It said that implementing a refreshed in-round scoreboard that separates the player's and enemy's teams into two tables would be coming "as soon as possible", meaning mid to late February according to the studio's Twitter post.

But today DICE tweeted again to announce it had pushed out a hotfix to address instability issues caused by the previous update, and in a reply to that post revealed that the scoreboard update would now be delayed.

Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands Character Reveal: Meet ‘Izzy’ – IGN First

2 years 2 months ago

Tiny Tina's Wonderlands, as you’ve already seen in our first hands-on preview, is a mash-up of Borderland's unique shooter-looter setting and the world of fantasy as filtered through the mind of a 13-year old explosives expert. Taking meta to the next level, we return to the Bunkers and Badassery of Tiny Tina's Assault on Dungeon Keep for an entirely new adventure through the cracked lens of fantasy as it exists in Tiny Tina's mind. With the world of Borderlands existing under a fantasy veneer, we're introduced to characters we've never seen before, both "real" and imagined, including one of the most important NPCs in Wonderlands, Izzy, owner and tavern keeper of Izzy's Fizzies, the "strictly non-alcoholic" soda bar.

Izzy has a warm and inviting personality, punctuated by her soft quasi-Minnesotan accent. It’s meant to evoke friendliness, but also serves as an in-game gag. According to Senior Writer Sam Winkler, "Tina is just running out of accents" for the non-playable characters in her B&B campaign.

Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl: Shredder Revealed as New Character

2 years 2 months ago

IGN can exclusively reveal that Shredder, the ultimate bad guy of the TMNT universe, is being added as a new playable fighter in Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl starting today. Get a first look at him in action in the reveal trailer above, and then watch the deeper-dive gameplay showcase narrated by Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl environment artist/lighting artist Hans Stein further down this page.

The metal-clad menace of Leonardo, Michelangelo, Donatello, and Raphael isn't the only new thing in the latest All-Star Brawl update. As you can see in the Shredder screenshots immediately below, the set from the classic Nickelodeon game show Double Dare is also being added as a fighting stage.

Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl unites a slew of characters from across the kids' network universe into this family-friendly four-player fighter, including cast members from Rugrats, SpongeBob, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and more.

IGN called All-Star Brawl "a very respectable platform fighter that serves as a fun, though far less polished and less fully featured alternative to its competition" in our review, adding that "the characters and stages feel soulless without the iconic Nickelodeon voice acting and music of its source shows, but All-Star Brawl lands its hits where it matters the most: in the fights themselves."

2 years 2 months ago

Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson is joining Fortnite as a character skin. The man behind the mask of long-term character The Foundation will finally be playable for the first time.

Epic Games partner Shiina also revealed on Twitter that Anderson .Paak and Bruno Mars will be playable in Fortnite on February 10, but winners of the Silk Sonic Cup on February 7 will get early access to the skins.

The Foundation skin is unlockable through the Chapter 3, Season 1 battle pass alongside his outfit, styles, emote, and other accessories. A full list of the quests required to unlock the items can be found below.

While a statue of The Foundation can be found on the Fortnite island the character hasn't really been featured in the game's story since the end of season two.

The Rock is on a roll in making gaming headlines as last week he revealed he was working on another video game movie. He claims it's "one of the biggest, most badass games", and the internet has been wildly speculating what it could be.
