Call of Duty: Warzone 2 reports spark fan concern over what may be left behind

2 years 4 months ago

Last night's report that Activision is developing a sequel to live service battle royale Call of Duty Warzone has sparked concern among fans who have spent countless hours - not to mention money - on the original.

Activision is yet to officially confirm it is making Warzone 2, but its existence emerged last night as part of a Bloomberg report which listed it as one of three upcoming Call of Duty games still to launch on PlayStation despite Microsoft's planned $70bn takeover of Activision Blizzard.

Publisher: Nintendo

Release:
Rating: Everyone
Reviewed on: Switch

Catching as many Pokémon as you can, learning more about them, and training them to be stronger in battle are the very foundations of Game Freak’s iconic RPG series, but few titles exemplify those core concepts as powerfully as this latest outing. Pokémon Legends: Arceus tasks you with exploring a bygone era of the Sinnoh region, then known as Hisui, and gives you more ways than ever to complete your Pokédex. While some elements don’t feel like their final forms, I love where this new direction takes the Pokémon series.

Crysis 4 Revealed In A New Teaser, In ‘Early Stages’ Of Development

2 years 4 months ago

Crytek Crysis 4

Crysis is a series best known for being a great FPS and a trilogy of games capable of melting graphics cards. Constantly pushing the envelope of FPS visuals with each release, it seems Crytek is ready to melt some more cards because it has officially announced Crysis 4 in a new teaser released today.

The teaser doesn’t reveal too much – it shows the Sun, a crumbling city, and more, but it ends with a giant “4” and the words, “join the journey [and] become the hero.” You can watch the teaser below for yourself:

Then, in a reply tweet to that teaser, Crytek says “we’re excited to announce we’re working on the 4th installment in the Crysis series” and that it wants “you to join us on our journey and become the hero you were destined to be.” That tweet links to a blog post with more information about the new sequel.

Activision Blizzard Won’t Voluntarily Recognize New Raven Software Union

2 years 4 months ago

Raven Software Activision Blizzard Game Workers Alliance Union

Thirty-four quality assurance employees formed a new union at Raven Software called the Game Workers Alliance Union. It became the first union at a publicly-traded video game publisher (and the first within Activision Blizzard). The union asked Activision Blizzard for voluntary recognition, but the publisher has revealed that it won’t do that.

Raven asked Activision Blizzard for the recognition by January 25, and hours after the deadline, an Activision Blizzard spokesperson sent the following statement to Game Informer

Review: Uncharted Legacy of Thieves Collection Revs Things Up on the PS5

2 years 4 months ago

Review: Uncharted Legacy of Thieves Collection Revs Things Up on the PS5

I have a history with the Uncharted franchise. I've half-finished two of them, bought the first three on PS3, picked up the PS4 compilation, and then grabbed the collection again when it was offered for free for PS5 owners. Something always comes up that derails my intentions of playing through the series. (Usually, it's a JRPG, as the genre is my Achilles heel.) With Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection on PS5, there was no way I could allow myself to be sidetracked by anything else.

Starting with Lost Legacy, and then heading into Uncharted 4, I spent the last week or so diving, climbing, dodging bullets, taking punches, and swinging from places where you will never catch me in real life. I met Sam Drake and Nadine Ross for the first time. (Gotta say, not a huge fan of in-game Sam. Retired Sam seems like a better dude.) There were gods and pirates and a surprising lack of torn clothing. My palms were sweaty from the intensity of it all. Nearly every minute spent in this world was amazing.

AI: The Somnium Files nirvanA Initiative Will Have Two Protagonists

2 years 4 months ago

Spike Chunsoft published new information for the upcoming sequel to AI: The Somnium Files in Japan. It announced that AI: The Somnium Files - nirvanA Initiative will have two protagonists. The new images reveal that the man in the game's key art is in fact a protagonist on an equal footing with Mizuki. [Thanks, 4Gamer!]

The male protagonist Ryuki is a rookie Psyncer affiliated with ABIS. He has a more reserved and calm personality. Though he is known for his high academic grades, he has no family as he has lost his parents and younger brother. Atsushi Tamaru will provide the Japanese voiceover for this character.

The woman with black attire is Tama, who is an AI-Ball, just like Aiba. She will accompany Ryuki as his assistant. Spike Chunsoft describes Tama as a rather interesting character who likes to encourage Ryuki by striking him. Ai Kakuma will voice this character in Japanese.

Spike Chunsoft also shared new artworks for the main characters, including the new protagonists, in nirvanA Initiative. It also confirmed that Tama will have a chibi form as well.

A New Crysis Game Is in Development; Officially Revealed With a CGI Tease

2 years 4 months ago

Crytek has today revealed that a new Crysis game is in development, the first mainline game since Crysis 3 in 2013. The announcement comes by way of an official press release, though images from today’s accompanying CGI trailer surfaced hours before the embargo which were then subsequently confirmed by the developer.

The game is in the very early stages of development, with little in the way of firm details about its design and premise confirmed in today’s announcement.

Here’s what Crytek CEO Avni Yerli had to say in a press release sent to Twinfinite:

Right now the game is in the early stages of development so it will be a while yet, but we wanted to bring you the news at this time as we are so hyped for the future, and to let you know that we will be listening to our community.

Crytek has a proud history of working with our community to develop the games you want to play. Crysis is incredibly important to so many people – it’s beloved by gamers everywhere, and some of those working in the industry today are doing so because of the original game – so we want to make sure the next installment in the franchise lives up to all of your expectations. Make sure to join our socials and get involved!

As development progresses we will release more details when we can. But in the meantime, know that our dedicated and talented team is working hard to bring you a truly next-gen shooter.

I also want to let Hunt: Showdown players know that we have some great things planned for you too, this year and beyond, so watch this space.

You can check out the CGI announcement tease below.

Raven QA unionising the hard way after Activision Blizzard decline to recognise them

2 years 4 months ago

Activision Blizzard have declined to voluntarily recognise the union forming at Raven Software's QA department, forcing workers to take the long approach. The group calling themselves the Game Workers Alliance will now have to hit up the National Labor Relations Board and run elections, but say they're still confident about unionising because, y'know, they have the support of a supermajority. "Once again, when management is given a choice, they always seem to take the low road," the group said.

If we have to have a million new Star Wars games, let them be made by Respawn

2 years 4 months ago

Although announcing three games at once feels a bit much, I'm really happy about the Respawn feat. Star Wars news. Respawn Entertainment always felt like one of those development studios that should have been shut down by a bigger studio circa 2015 because the people loved Titanfall but it wasn't, you know, Call Of Duty or anything. I turned my back for what seemed like but a moment, and suddenly Apex Legends exists and Respawn are one of the key players under EA, growing stronger from within. One day we'll be watching Andrew Wilson at an E3 showcase and realise it's actually Vince Zampella's eyes looking out at us. Everyone coming on stage to present is just Vince Zampella doing a voice and wearing a different baseball cap.

Point is, I'm mostly just pleased that Respawn are still around to make games featuring robots that surprise and delight us. And if they're not allowed to do Titanfall 3, Star Wars is at least a rich field to till said robots. Lousy with robots, is Star Wars. But honestly, if anyone is going to make Star Wars games (apart from BioWare, who have spent recent years making Dragon Age 4 and / or collapsing like a magnificent neutron star) then I'd root for Respawn. They may not make the Star Wars games you think you want, but they'll make the ones you need right now.

eBay Will Now Authenticate Trading Cards to Combat Costly Fakes

2 years 4 months ago

eBay has announced that it will be expanding its Authenticity Guarantee service to include trading cards in a bid to combat the number of costly fakes that have grown in circulation.

As detailed in a press release, the company has stated that it will be expanding its Authenticity Guarantee starting with single ungraded cards.

While free, the service at launch will include any collectible card games, sports and non-sports that are sold as single ungraded cards for a fee of $750+ in the U.S. Looking ahead, however, the company says that it also has plans to include graded, auto and patch cards sold for $25+ - though this won't be available until mid-2022 at the earliest.

The move represents eBay's latest bid to reassure customers when purchasing higher-value items through the online marketplace and follows in the authentication footsteps of other products such as handbags ($500+), sneakers ($100+), and watches ($2000+) that are already covered by the guarantee.

Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves - how PS5 improves upon a last-gen masterpiece

2 years 4 months ago

When Uncharted 4: A Thief's End was first revealed during E3 2014, Naughty Dog presented a stunning teaser trailer featuring Nathan Drake waking on a beach... the detail was unprecedented and astonishingly, it was running at 60 frames per second. Of course, that 60fps dream never came to pass - beyond multiplayer mode - but 30fps was just fine, bearing in mind the quality of the final game. That said, we were left wondering what might have been. Certainly, simulated 60fps gameplay using the game's slow-motion mode looked absolutely beautiful - but now, thanks to PlayStation 5, it's running at 60fps in real-time. Or 120fps, if you prefer.

Revisiting Uncharted 4 and its Lost Legacy spin-off - both remastered now for PlayStation 5 - reminds us of the sheer level of achievement delivered by Naughty Dog in the last generation. Both are impressively executed games that essentially perfect the cinematic action formula, delivering strong characterisation, stunning locations and exceptional set-pieces. Across the PS4 generation, the studio proved time and again that it had mastered the balancing act of delivering engrossing player agency within a tightly-defined cinematic experience.

KartKraft, the highly acclaimed sim that was so good Motorsport Games went and bought it all up and set up a new Australian studio for some of the team at original developer Black Delta, is finally leaving early access and having its full launch today.

Having first hit Steam in 2018, Motorsport Games moved in on KartKraft last year, and the full release will see some 10 laser-scanned tracks, 20 kart manufacturers and plenty by way of mod support. It's also one of the better racing experiences you can get in VR, so is worth a punt if you prefer your driving games a bit more immersive.

Crusader Kings 3 Invades Consoles In Late March

2 years 4 months ago

At Gamescom in August, Paradox Interactive announced its popular PC strategy series Crusader Kings would finally be making its console debut. Today, the publisher announced Crusader Kings III will be playable from your couch on March 29.

Paradox is calling this release an adaptation, rather than a port, because of all of the changes that have been made to, well, adapt the game for console play. UI, text, menus, and more have been overhauled to provide a more comfortable experience while playing this immersive strategy title with a controller. "The all-new control map lets players quickly and easily navigate the game’s menus via triggers, bumpers, and quick flicks of the analog stick," reads a press release sent to Game Informer. To utilize the console experience to its fullest, Crusader Kings III will sport faster loading on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S, and controller features like haptics and adaptive triggers on the DualSense are supported as well.

Resident Evil 4

Resident Evil 4 is arguably the best entry in Capcom’s iconic horror franchise. The game’s staying power is particularly noteworthy as several re-releases and a (leaked) remake continue to bring Leon’s action-packed journey through the plagued Spanish countryside to newcomers and old school players. Moreover, a Resident Evil 4 fan-made Remaster that’s been eight years in the making is slated to finally launch next month, as reported by Eurogamer. And based on the extensive trailer (seen below), it was well worth the wait.

Dynasty Warriors 9 Empires Demo Appears on Consoles

2 years 4 months ago

Dynasty Warriors 9 Empires Demo Appears on Consoles

Trying before buying is now officially an option worldwide for the new Dynasty Warriors game. Koei Tecmo released the Dynasty Warriors 9 Empires demo on consoles. It features an opportunity to test out two types of gameplay. People can also create characters they can use in the full game. Japan got its chance to play the trial back in December 2021.

First, the main activity in Dynasty Warriors 9 Empires demo is seeing what the Castle Sieges are like. People can both try to protect their base in Defensive Battles or invade someone else with, well, Invasion Battles. There is only one difficulty level here. However, tutorials are present and the final game offers multiple difficulty levels.

As for custom characters, Edit Mode is present in this trial. People can make a Custom Officer. This character can then either be used in the Castle Sieges present in the demo or saved for the full game. Once that launches, someone can import that data.

Dynasty Warriors 9 Empires will appear on the Nintendo Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, PC, and Google Stadia on February 15, 2022. It is immediately available in Japan. People with consoles can get the Dynasty Warriors 9 Empires demo now.

Stranger Of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin is baffling in the best way

"Just tell us about the crystals", demands Jack, Stranger Of Paradise Final Fantasy Origin's prickly protagonist. He has no time for the posh dark elf who applauds him for something. Whatever it is, Jack doesn't care. In fact, I don't think he knows where he is. If he does, he wants nothing to with it.

This interaction is contained in a new trailer that I deem to be perfect. It sells me on this Final Fantasy action RPG, because it seems like I'll get to control someone as impatient as I am. Jack lives for crashing and bashing. The story is an inconvenience for him, the fighting is not.

The popular grand-strategy game with RPG elements (or perhaps RPG with grand strategy elements?) will be released on the new-gen consoles on March 29, 2022. It’ll also launch on Game Pass.

Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection Review – Prettiness for a Price

2 years 4 months ago

Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection on PS5

If there’s a studio that really spearheads PlayStation’s exclusive library, it’s Naughty Dog. The developer has been pushing the limits of what we thought was possible in video games, from stellar writing and character development, through to minute visual details that help bring their worlds to life. One of its most iconic franchises has been the Uncharted series, telling the tale of Nathan Drake as he travels around the world in search of long-lost treasures only talked about in myths and legends. Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection combines both of the PS4 titles — Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, and its standalone spin-off, Uncharted: The Lost Legacy — and gives them a fresh coat of PS5 paint, all to tempt us with another playthrough of these iconic adventures.

Editor’s Note: As Uncharted: Legacy of Thieves Collection consists of two games we’ve already reviewed — Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy — this review will primarily be focusing on the improvements Naughty Dog and Iron Galaxy have brought to the collection thanks to the additional horsepower of the PS5. We will be covering how the gameplay in both titles holds up years after release, but if you’re looking for full reviews, we’ve linked them for your convenience below.

Jan Ochoa's Top 10 Games of 2021

2 years 4 months ago

This has been a tough year for numerous reasons. I don't need to list the specific reasons, but I definitely felt like my tank was running on empty a lot of the year. Hell, a couple weeks ago I was even debating with myself whether or not I still enjoyed or liked video games anymore. I've been juggling feelings of inadequacy and general emptiness on and off constantly. Like I've had a weird underlying feeling of "survivor's guilt" bubbling under the surface. My sleep sucks. I have such a short fuse lately. The only thing consistent is that I feel like I'm constantly waking up on the wrong side of the bed.

Burnout? Great game.

Let's take a deep breath. Okay, let's take another. Did I have to tell y'all to exhale because that goes without saying I think. Sick - now it's time to look at the big picture we got going on and it turns out that there may be more highlights than I thought. I ran a race with my best friends, my partner got into grad school, met and then got to hire Jess, started a Power Ranger podcast with Matt, got to run it back and do a couple of podcasts with good ol' Benjie P, I even hosted the Bombcast a couple times, and shoot I even got promoted. I know that the year for Giant Bomb isn't what everyone expected, there's a lot of negativity online and everyone's feelings are valid. But yo dawg, put your TRUST in me. WE got this. Let's talk about some GAMES NOW HUH?!

Here’s a quick list of stuff in no particular order that ALMOST made my Top 10

  • Ratchet and Clank: Rift Apart
  • Fuga: Melodies of Steel
  • Loop Hero
  • Knockout City
  • Psychonauts 2
  • Shin Megami Tensei V
  • Wildermyth
  • Unpacking
  • Persona 5 Strikers

Actually I just wanted to shout out a couple more things

OK, forget whatever I'm going to write about whenever I get to the top video games of the year later on down this page. The video game of 2021 is Outriders. Outriders is the 2021 of video games. Outriders is the game I played while I was waiting to get to the other side of wherever it was that I was then, in hopes of getting to something better on the other side. It wasn't a bad year, and Outriders was not a bad game. But in a lot of ways I was just trying to get through it and get on to whatever is next.

I never did finish Outriders, but then these first weeks of 2022 have felt a lot like 2021, too, so hey, maybe that balances out.

The release cadence and quality of video games felt a little herky-jerky all year. Many of the big games were things that had been delayed into their eventual 2021 release window, and a lot of stuff launched in weird states of not-quite-ready. The video game industry's transition to working from home happened in 2020, and things were probably smoother by 2021, but... not the sort of thing you'd actually call "smooth."

Rorie's Games Of The Year (Good And Bad)

2021 started off with me getting a sleek and shiny new 3080 in February! SMILES! It broke in September! FROWNS. But I got it RMAed by NVIDIA! I was back to smiling at that point, and here we are, with another long year in the books.

Those of you who know me from the site know my tastes, probably: I like big flashy games with lots of guns and explosions and I like them to look very nice indeed with a high framerate. There’s a reason that DOOM Eternal was my GOTY last year! This year I felt like my gameplay habits were somehow even more along these lines, as I wanted to stress my video card and big-ass monitor as much as I could. So most of what I gravitated to this year was big flashy AAA stuff. I've become a gaming basic bitch and I’m pretty OK with that.

Jeff Bakalar’s Top 10 games and games-adjacent things of 2021

2 years 4 months ago

By now you probably know Jeff Bakalar. He was the guy hanging around the Giant Bomb East studio so much that they eventually asked him to co-host the Giant Beastcast. Then one day a pandemic hit and everyone left. He wanted that rotating chair to stop spinning so bad, well guess what, joke’s on him now.

Right, so now that the dark prophecy has completed and I’ve moved over full time, it seems appropriate that my 2021 list be mostly video games and not some other collection of things I really like and want to force you to read about.

Full disclosure though, a couple pinball machines found their way on my list this year because they are great games that deserve the attention. You didn’t think I’d let this whole thing be console or PC did you? Aww, you’re silly.

2021 was lookin OK? ‘till it didn’t. It was rough. You know, one of the biggest things that happened was the cross-country move to Atlanta. That’s Big and Exciting and… Stressful. Marry that with my mom passing a couple weeks before, a foot that was infected (and that I had to end up getting a toe amputated), and more than a couple of hospital stays for various reasons and… holy man…

BUT!!!

2022. My year (I hope I’m not jinxing this). The number 22 is super dominant in my life. I don’t really believe in this sort of stuff, but hell, this is some crazy coincidental shit.

  • I was born on the 22nd of March
  • My oldest son was born on 12/2 (kind of a 22?)
  • My daughter? May 22nd. At exactly 10:22PM which, in military time is: 22:22
  • My youngest son, born a week late… on the 22nd

Stuff’s crazy, right?

What does that mean for this year? That it’s gonna be a crazy good year! Or it’s all gonna come crashing down. Who the hell knows?!? YAY!

No Man's Sky Studio's Lost Early Games Return

2 years 4 months ago

No Man's Sky studio Hello Games has announced that it's surprise-released remasters of its debut Joe Danger games on Apple devices.

Before it gained notoriety for making No Man's Sky, Hello Games cut its teeth with Joe Danger - a sidescrolling mobile series. Now, ahead of the character's tenth birthday, Hello Games has revealed that both Joe Danger and Joe Danger Infinity have been remastered for iOS15 and are available as of today from the App Store.

The remasters see a number of enhancements over their predecessors. Improved graphics, a new engine, and upped framerates are present in both titles, while Joe Danger Infinity will also gain the added benefit of gamepad and ProMotion support for those who are interested. To cap off the good news, Hello Games has also revealed that any fans who already own either game will receive an update today for free.

Studio head Sean Murray added that, at a later date, both games will be "fully playable for free online".

Having originally sold over a million copies, Joe Danger unfortunately became a casualty of the Apple App store, as iOS looked to cull older games that were no longer supported by the latest Apple devices. While Hello Games founder Sean Murray admits that the success of No Man's Sky left Joe Danger slightly unloved, he says that the team has been working for the past two years to bring the character back to life, piece by piece through eight years of Unity updates.
